Transfer activity is particularly rampant this week, with hordes of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers choosing to play their winter wild cards early into January. Many are looking to pack their attacking ranks full of powerful point-devourers and compensate for their ‘Galácticos’ style spending with a bargain defence. However, your backline needn’t consist of reserve team players you’ve barely heard of to accommodate those big-hitters in midfield and up front, with plenty of worthwhile discount options available.

Wigan Athletic’s Antolin Alcaraz, priced at £4.5 million on the FPL game, is one of these ‘value’ options. The Paraguyan international is not just there to make up the numbers though; he has proven to be an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s set-up so far this season, having played in every Premier League fixture bar one (which he missed through suspension) after signing for the Latics in the summer from Belgian side Club Brugge. Don’t let the suspension put you off though, as Alcaraz is anything but a dirty player; apart from the dismissal against Manchester United, he has received just one booking so far this term.

Alcaraz has managed to chalk-up an impressive FPL return of 59 points and his magnitude to Wigan has not gone unnoticed by the Bonus Points committee, who have dealt him an hefty 10 so far, a total bettered by only one other defender, Gary Cahill of Bolton. A rather ambitious sum for a player whose team currently sit 19th in the Premier League, 1 point off bottom-placed West Ham.

As well as his low valuation and capacity to attain points, it is Wigan’s forthcoming Premier League fixtures (FUL, ars & AVL, wba, BLA, liv,) that also make Alcaraz an eye-catching choice. With the exception of a tricky clash at The Emirates -the first match of their double Gameweek 24- you would have to fancy them to achieve something from the rest of those fixtures and Roberto Martinez must be looking to this run of games as a means of rekindling his side’s season.

Just two defenders in a similar price-range have managed to score more FPL points than Alcaraz this season; Sunderland’s previous Watchlistee Phil Bardsley and Blackpool’s Ian Evatt. With an ownership of 3.9% Alcaraz proves to be slightly less popular than his counterparts, so could be seen as a good “differential” over the coming weeks.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Good article, which reminds me that I need a short-term replacement for Konchesky before I wildcard in GW27. One free transfer this week. My current defence is:

    Hart (Carson)
    Rafael Coleman Bardsley Kolarov (Konchesky)

What would be the best option for GW23-26:

    1) get Djourou
    2) get Alcaraz
    3) get £5.3m Fulham defender (if so, who?)
    4) save transfer and have two free transfers next week?

BROM are completely out of form and don't keep CS, so I'd play Coleman.

6 selections in trebles is 20 bets +1 for acca.

Lads I have Konchesky, Kolarov and Salcido think I may be able to get away with defence of Kolarov, Vidic and Coleman this week - question woukld you save the transfers or get somone in?

MY team is linked I plan to save WC for 26/27 as am doing alright at the moment and have UTD and Blackpool coverage for double fixtures.

Only transfer I am seriously considering this week is bale - Nzog , can someone take a look pls

Significant risk of Kolarov not playing I think. Leave it as late as possible, but if he's dropped you could do Konch - Brum def.

Bale - N'Zog may also be worth a hit given fixtures and DGW.

    Any other suggestions?

    Vidic Coleman Kolarov (Konchesky Nelsen)
    Nasri VDV Nani Adam (N'Zogbia)
    Carroll Tevez(c) Berbatov

Hmm ive just wildcarded and put Carr in for Brum cover. I already have NZog and im thinking Alcaraz might be a better option. BP king it seems over Carr. What do you think?

Also, ive been mulling over Berbs or RVP since im wildcarding. RVP is in at tyhe moment but I keep swapping them in and out. Im worried berbs won't get the full DGW next week.

i've got hart as that is the only 100% way into the city defence at the moment, so i wont bother with fabianski. im not too fussed in gettin an arsenal defender, but i thought at 4.2 if he was gonna be playin for a while it was a bargin.

The German magazine 'kicker' has confirmed that Stoke have now agreed terms with TSG Hoffenheim to sign their Senegalese striker Demba Ba, and that a deal will go through if he passes the medical today.

    http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/bundesliga/startseite/547234/artikel_Perfekt-Ba-wechselt-zu-Stoke-City.html

Could be interesting depending on how he's priced - 37 goals and 13 assists in 91 Bundesliga games, including 5 goals in 5 games this season. But Ba's very inconsistent, and was nowhere near as good as this last year. He also fell out with the club over the way he demanded a transfer too. Worth keeping an eye on though.

I'm thinking of wc'ing gw24 and have been looking at a few team options. I'm considering going for a super stong midfield which I would play every week and so so forwards. What are thoughts on this bunch:

    Foster/Stockdale
    Coleman Djourou Rafael Bardsley Murphy/Simpson
    VDV Nani Lampard Fabregas Nasri
    Rooney/Tevez DJ 5m striker

Not sure who my third striker would be though. I'm .1 short to get Welbeck or Odem if I go with Rooney. If I go with Tevez leaves me enough to get one of them. Obviously one striker would always be benched.

Alcaraz?! No thanks. Did you watch Wigan against Newcastle recently? Woeful. They will be lucky to keep another clean sheet this season.

Used my Wildcard and went for the following team.

    Hart/Al Habsi

    Huth/Rafael/Coleman/Djourou/Hangeland

    Fabs/Nani/VDV/Adam/N'zogs

    Tevez/Campbell/Berbs

Think I'm covered for DGW's and I like the look of my team.

good team - Im not convinced on Campbell but worth a punt given fixtures.

No Chelsea coverage (in my opinion) is risky but overall a good team.

Front 8, who are you going to bench? I also used my wildcard and have almost same front 8, save Berbs->RVP, Berbs comes in next week, and Varney instead of Campbell. Now I have a easy choice benching Varney, but I'm thinking getting Campbell in and if I do that, I don't know who to bench 🙂

      B.

Liverpool defence is pony and RVP risky (even though I have him)

Carroll a must for that price in my opinion.

I'd play Berba because hes against his old ckub and plays much better when rooney is playing

        Adam - good point,

My only concern is that Blackpool are likely to get a draw or win - and Adam will get the inevitable bonus, but Berbs is not guaranteed to score - although Spurs defence is very leaky!

another one to cast your expert eyes over. All bases covered?

    Foster - Stockdale

    Rafael - Terry - Bardsley - Djourou - Coleman

    Nani - Fabs - VDV - N'Zogbia - Adam

    Tevez - RVP - Carroll

I know people will pull me up about 'downgrading Terry' but back end of the season I reckon Chelsea will pick up and I like the thought of having a reliable defender that Il play 90% of the time.

    Thoughts??

Looks like a really strong team even with a good chunk spent on Teery. Personally I'd maybe plump for Hangeland and someone like R Johnson (with a potential treble GW coming up), instead of Terry and Djourou.
