Transfer activity is particularly rampant this week, with hordes of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers choosing to play their winter wild cards early into January. Many are looking to pack their attacking ranks full of powerful point-devourers and compensate for their ‘Galácticos’ style spending with a bargain defence. However, your backline needn’t consist of reserve team players you’ve barely heard of to accommodate those big-hitters in midfield and up front, with plenty of worthwhile discount options available.

Wigan Athletic’s Antolin Alcaraz, priced at £4.5 million on the FPL game, is one of these ‘value’ options. The Paraguyan international is not just there to make up the numbers though; he has proven to be an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s set-up so far this season, having played in every Premier League fixture bar one (which he missed through suspension) after signing for the Latics in the summer from Belgian side Club Brugge. Don’t let the suspension put you off though, as Alcaraz is anything but a dirty player; apart from the dismissal against Manchester United, he has received just one booking so far this term.

Alcaraz has managed to chalk-up an impressive FPL return of 59 points and his magnitude to Wigan has not gone unnoticed by the Bonus Points committee, who have dealt him an hefty 10 so far, a total bettered by only one other defender, Gary Cahill of Bolton. A rather ambitious sum for a player whose team currently sit 19th in the Premier League, 1 point off bottom-placed West Ham.

As well as his low valuation and capacity to attain points, it is Wigan’s forthcoming Premier League fixtures (FUL, ars & AVL, wba, BLA, liv,) that also make Alcaraz an eye-catching choice. With the exception of a tricky clash at The Emirates -the first match of their double Gameweek 24- you would have to fancy them to achieve something from the rest of those fixtures and Roberto Martinez must be looking to this run of games as a means of rekindling his side’s season.

Just two defenders in a similar price-range have managed to score more FPL points than Alcaraz this season; Sunderland’s previous Watchlistee Phil Bardsley and Blackpool’s Ian Evatt. With an ownership of 3.9% Alcaraz proves to be slightly less popular than his counterparts, so could be seen as a good “differential” over the coming weeks.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

      You HAVE to have VDV... it's the law.

      Seriously though, you have to have him...

        Well I posted the same question last night and got 2 responses, both said NZog - I'll then get VDV when I WC in GW27

        I had him earlier in the season but sold when he was injured.

          I wouldn't get N'Zogbia personally - he's had a quiet season, don't be sucked in by the DGW!

                How about Gerrard > NZog this week and then Nasri > VDV next week.

                Then that gives me the official FFS midfield of
                Nani, Nzog, Fabs, Adam, VDV

    Any opinions on what transfer to make?
    Foster(Carson)
    Coleman Kolarov Carr (Vidic Koncheskey)
    Nasri VDV Nani Etherington (Adam)
    Drogba Tevez Carroll

    2 free transfers with 1.8 in the bank

    Want to use 1 this week
    A -> Konchesky - Hanagland
    B -> Etherington - NZog
    C -> Drogba - Rooney (Providing Drogba is dropped)
    D -> Use WC

      I have nearly the same front 8 like yours except Ether vs. Brunt.
      I think you should better play Adam in stead of Caroll. I hope hes not 100% fit so his 30 minutes play would be outscored by Adams since B'pool are better at away games.

    Posted this on the last page but I know comments tend to get lost back there.
    Still fiddling around with my WC, sorted the back out I think but can’t decide on a front 8.
    A) VDV, Nasri, Adam, Nani, Lamps.
    Carroll, RVP, Berba.
    B)VDV, Adam, Nani, Fabs, N’Zog
    Tevez, Carroll, Rooney.
    C) VDV, Nani, Fabs, Lamps,Ferguson
    Carroll, Rodallega, Rooney.

    I’m playing serious catch-up in my league if that makes any difference.
    Thanks for anybody's opinions.

    Hart (Jaaskelainen)
    Coleman, Bardsley, GCahill (Rafael, Kyrgiakos)
    VDV, Nani, Nasri, Adam (Bale)
    Drogba, Elmander, DJCampbell

    I have 1 free transfer, am currently thinking either:
    A) Kyrgiakos (waste of space) -> Hangeland
    B) Drogba -> Tevez

    Obviously I'd be upset if I get rid of Drogba and he scores a hattrick... lets see if he's in the team!

    I'm hoping for another of this seasons weird result weekends

    West Ham 2-1 Arsenal
    and
    Spurs 3-1 Man Utd

    To the point where the armband has been sat on VdV all week. Pleeeeease don't let normality return now!

        if I wait till next week I could bring in players who I think price will increase and then sell them for profit?

          In my opinion people who do that pissing around should have their bollocks eaten by rhesus monkeys. All it does is help drive up the price for normal people.
          To be honest there is little point in the odd 0.1 here and there at this stage of the season, its the second half - pick a winning team.

          Just use your wildcard to get the best team together, don't worry about chasing profit - most you're likely to make is 0.1 or 0.2 overall.

          Without seeing your team it's hard to say, but I would wait til next week unless you can't put out 11 players.

              That's what I'm doing, but lots of people are WCing to set their teams up for the DGW24, with a plan in mind to maximise the GW27 doubles as well.

                It's possible to have 10 or 11 DGW players for GW27 that you would want to keep anyway as the basis of your team. Hope it works out.

          actually it's tougher than you think - a 0.1 rise won't do it, you need a 0.2 rise. Very rare in a week unless someone goes mental, then you'd surely want to keep them anyway!

    Apologies for re-post, got lost on last page...

    Basically I want to bring in Hangeland and N’Zogbia over the next 2 weeks. Which should I prioritise for this week?

    a) Konchesky -> Hangeland (would mean that I bench Bale)
    b) Bale -> N’Zogbia (would mean that I bench Elmander)

    Thoughts? I will do the other transfer next GW.

      I've put N'Zogbia in my wildcard team,but I don't think he's essential, as there are other good midfielders eg Nani, Fabs, Lamps, Adam, Barton, VDV, Nasri.
      Getting rid of Konchesky has to be a priority as he is not going to be playing under Dalglish, Aurelio and Kelly ahead in the pecking order.

        I think Zog will rip it up over the next 3 games. He was on form before the silly red card and he'll be fresh and chomping at the bit after the layoff. Bonus point darling and cheap as chips and a DGW next.
        What more could you want?

      Don't get to many DGW players because you'll have problem shipping them out after the DGW(except Manu players)

      You'll probably need 2 or 3 ManU players: Rafael,Nani, Berb/Rooney
      1 blackpool player : Adam or DJ
      1 wigan Player: N'zog
      1 fulham Defender : Hangeland (if you have funds) or Pantsil

      Differential : Torres

          Ha! Nah got to do boring reports so in a bit of a nark, but I honestly find the "I'm on a wildcard and who will rise in value" stuff incredibly tedious. I'd rather a dozen RMT's than one of those. I think it was Mark n Lard who suggested the whole game would be better if you took out the option to see transfers in and out - I fully agree.

          Ps
          Coleman went up in value and that annoyed me too.

          it tends to work in your favour for players you want to keep but who's price is falling. I gained/saved 0.1 by shipping NZog at the start of the WC and buying back after his drop.
          Hard to make profit in just a week because you need 2 rises.
