Transfer activity is particularly rampant this week, with hordes of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers choosing to play their winter wild cards early into January. Many are looking to pack their attacking ranks full of powerful point-devourers and compensate for their ‘Galácticos’ style spending with a bargain defence. However, your backline needn’t consist of reserve team players you’ve barely heard of to accommodate those big-hitters in midfield and up front, with plenty of worthwhile discount options available.

Wigan Athletic’s Antolin Alcaraz, priced at £4.5 million on the FPL game, is one of these ‘value’ options. The Paraguyan international is not just there to make up the numbers though; he has proven to be an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s set-up so far this season, having played in every Premier League fixture bar one (which he missed through suspension) after signing for the Latics in the summer from Belgian side Club Brugge. Don’t let the suspension put you off though, as Alcaraz is anything but a dirty player; apart from the dismissal against Manchester United, he has received just one booking so far this term.

Alcaraz has managed to chalk-up an impressive FPL return of 59 points and his magnitude to Wigan has not gone unnoticed by the Bonus Points committee, who have dealt him an hefty 10 so far, a total bettered by only one other defender, Gary Cahill of Bolton. A rather ambitious sum for a player whose team currently sit 19th in the Premier League, 1 point off bottom-placed West Ham.

As well as his low valuation and capacity to attain points, it is Wigan’s forthcoming Premier League fixtures (FUL, ars & AVL, wba, BLA, liv,) that also make Alcaraz an eye-catching choice. With the exception of a tricky clash at The Emirates -the first match of their double Gameweek 24- you would have to fancy them to achieve something from the rest of those fixtures and Roberto Martinez must be looking to this run of games as a means of rekindling his side’s season.

Just two defenders in a similar price-range have managed to score more FPL points than Alcaraz this season; Sunderland’s previous Watchlistee Phil Bardsley and Blackpool’s Ian Evatt. With an ownership of 3.9% Alcaraz proves to be slightly less popular than his counterparts, so could be seen as a good “differential” over the coming weeks.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

      Yes, very solid. Looks nice!

Not even sure you need to W/C next week. You've currently got 5 double gameweekers in your team. I'd be tempted to take a hit to bring in 2 more. The consensus is around 7/8 players is optmium next week. I say hand on until gameweek 27 to play it.

Cheers mate, I feel kinda the same.. Nothing is really jumping out at me right now and I'm pretty happy with the way I'm setup for the next few weeks.. Will most likely look to get rid of Malouda though, possibly try and fit Fabregas in for his double, or use funds elsewhere.. I currently have 0.6in bank and two freebies so might hold off on any moves this week

No, not Barsley. It's got to be Baines, the rest all have favourable home fixtures and argueably offer as much attacking threat. Who's your keeper?

    Afternoon Fellas,

Could do with a bit of help...

I'm at a loss as to which transfer to make this week. My defence is weak so I'm obviously tempted to bring in a defender. However, I'm only prepared to bring in a defender who has a double gameweek next week - the obvious choice of which is Hangeland.

Alternatively, I could get rid of Pederson for a midfielder with a double next week. The choice would be between N'Zogbia and Dempsey. My squad is below - would appreciate views on who is the best move this week.

    Gordon, Jaask
    Vidic, Kolarov, Konchesky, Samba, Coleman
    Nani, Nasri, VDV, Pederson, Adam
    Torres, Tevez, Varney

    A) Samba > Hangeland
    B) Pederson > N'zogbia
    C) Pederson > Dempsey

    Cheers 😀

I think play Kolarov, Konchesky and Coleman Vidic 1st def sub. And just hope that one of Kolarov or Konchesky actually plays. I think that N'Zog on a double is going to get you more than Hangeland on a double. So get him in now for FUL.

Oooh tough choice. But Dempsey largely relies on his goals, I'd go with the tried and trusted N'Zog. But very tough one. Flip a coin sorta decision that.

This is true. Admittedly I don't exactly want him in my team but I think I'm gonna at least hold on and see how much gametime he gets in the double GW24 as a last chance saloon. Samba on the other hand I wouldn't feel particuarly confident fielding him in many of his upcoming fixtures.

Thinking about selling Tevez for Rooney for GW24 and 25, then WCing Tevez (or even Dzeko depending on how he's looking) back in GW26.

Tevez has Villa away GW24, Brum away GW25
Rooney has Brum home and Blackpool away GW24, Villa home GW25.

I'd lose 0.3 at least on selling and buying back Tevez.

i was also thinking of doing that but have 2 problems
      a) tevez scores better away from home usually
      b) i would lose at least 0.3 on tevez

Thanks, gents, plenty of time for that plan to be derailed by injury / form / hookers anyway.

    Current Team

    Foster - hahnemann
    Evra - Kolarov - jagielka - Konchesky - Jara
    VDV - Nani - Nasri - Bale - Adam
    Torres - Carroll - Elmander

    WC Team

    Foster - Begovic
    Hangeland - Coleman - Djourou - Rafael - Jara
    Fabregas - VDV - Nani - Adam - N'Zogbia
    Tevez - Berbatov - Carroll

Worth it? As i dont think I will be able to afford this team in a couple of weeks with all the price rises.

Or just play safe and do Konchesky - Hangeland?

    appreciated lads.

I am in a bit of a pickle this week and am feeling a bit vulnerable without any City or Chelsea attacking options. I would really like to bring Tevez in but having already done Gerrard to Fabregas would need to take an eight point hit to do so. Was thinking Kyrgiakos to Hughes and Elmander to Tevez. Am I mad? If I bring Tevez in I will be captaining him.

Alternatively, in case Arsenal have a hangover from the performance in the week, I could do Nasri to Nzog to raise a few quid to facilitate bringing Tevez in.

The final option would be to do nothing and maybe take a four pointer doing Kyrgiakos to Hughes and brining in maybe Rodallega for ELamnder.

    Any thoughts?

8 point hits when you've got a wildcard in your pocket don't seem like a good idea.

Im getting rid of Tevez as well next week until after GW27, im bringing in berbs though. It is a good idea, because will also let us see how Dzeko settles in.. he might even be better than Tevez with Tevez playing out wide.. so after GW27 we can decide between the two.

"In Dann's absence, McLeish has to decide between using Liam Ridgewell or Martin Jiranek as his replacement in the middle of the defence alongside Roger Johnson."

does this mean ridgewell will have less chance of going up for corners/freekicks etc?

Liam is goal threat, never mind Dann playing or not. I will add RJ to my squad in the WC.

I was just looking at the league table and Liverpool have a better home record than Arsenal in the Premier League this season.

    That's surprising.

Nasri (C) this weekend for me.

Lads first question is which option is better for the double GW 24 Torres or Berbatov.

Torres and Liv out of form, but very nice fixtures, matches at Anfield and King Kenny is in charge. I quite fancy him even everybody are disappointed from him.

The only thing that is Berbatov better is his price. Maybe he is in better form but the problem is that I have owned him between his 3 goals and his 5 goals, so its frustrating with him, u never know when he is gonna be benched and will he be in your team when he scores or u gonna knee jerk and sell him before big haul. Plus I think that he is not certain on 2 games in the double.

So please give me your opinion for striker for the double and GW 25 I presume.

The thing with Tevez, is just when you have a reason to doubt his output..... he scores big.

      He's sneaky that way.

There are conflicting reports floating around about Dzeko not starting and Silva being healthy...which has brought more doubt to the whole situation.

If I use my first WC now,

Will my second WC be until GW27 or for the rest of the season??

I'd imagine that if you play your wildcard now it will count as the 'second' wildcard, and then you'll still be able to use your 'first' one whenever you want. Would be a bit of a joke if that wasn't the case.

he may not be dropped the moment Schwarzer returns - Hughes might keep him on - he only lost the spot originally through injury. If he plays well you never know.
