Transfer activity is particularly rampant this week, with hordes of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers choosing to play their winter wild cards early into January. Many are looking to pack their attacking ranks full of powerful point-devourers and compensate for their ‘Galácticos’ style spending with a bargain defence. However, your backline needn’t consist of reserve team players you’ve barely heard of to accommodate those big-hitters in midfield and up front, with plenty of worthwhile discount options available.

Wigan Athletic’s Antolin Alcaraz, priced at £4.5 million on the FPL game, is one of these ‘value’ options. The Paraguyan international is not just there to make up the numbers though; he has proven to be an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s set-up so far this season, having played in every Premier League fixture bar one (which he missed through suspension) after signing for the Latics in the summer from Belgian side Club Brugge. Don’t let the suspension put you off though, as Alcaraz is anything but a dirty player; apart from the dismissal against Manchester United, he has received just one booking so far this term.

Alcaraz has managed to chalk-up an impressive FPL return of 59 points and his magnitude to Wigan has not gone unnoticed by the Bonus Points committee, who have dealt him an hefty 10 so far, a total bettered by only one other defender, Gary Cahill of Bolton. A rather ambitious sum for a player whose team currently sit 19th in the Premier League, 1 point off bottom-placed West Ham.

As well as his low valuation and capacity to attain points, it is Wigan’s forthcoming Premier League fixtures (FUL, ars & AVL, wba, BLA, liv,) that also make Alcaraz an eye-catching choice. With the exception of a tricky clash at The Emirates -the first match of their double Gameweek 24- you would have to fancy them to achieve something from the rest of those fixtures and Roberto Martinez must be looking to this run of games as a means of rekindling his side’s season.

Just two defenders in a similar price-range have managed to score more FPL points than Alcaraz this season; Sunderland’s previous Watchlistee Phil Bardsley and Blackpool’s Ian Evatt. With an ownership of 3.9% Alcaraz proves to be slightly less popular than his counterparts, so could be seen as a good “differential” over the coming weeks.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

    Al-Habsi
    Crainey, Kolarov, Konchesky
Nani, Nasri, Adam, Bale, VDV (C)
    Tevez, Torres

    Subs: Jaask, Carroll, Rafael, Knight

Isn't that the most plug ugly defence you've ever seen? Question is does it need surgery, if so who's the man? Coleman, R.Johnson, A.Hughes, Alcaraz, A.N.Other?

As late as I can really, probably around 26/27.
        Problem with Alcaraz is twofold:
        1) He plays for Wigan
        2) Fixtures. Though to be fair he has a good one this week.
        Hmmmm might get him.

but it's a derby.... and newcastle won away at wigan recently, as well as the emirates earlier this season, and they dicked sunderland earlier as well. not as shrewd as you think

getting 3/1 on a 6/5 shot is shrewd no matter what the outcome

i have 40 on sunderland at 3.1 and can easily put 60 on newcastle to win or draw now at 4/6

if sund win i make 60 profit if they dont i have all my money back

        id say thats very shrewd

Team a bit of a state - trying to set up for DGW:

    A. Konchesky -> Hangeland - leaves Gerrard in team, which seems a waste of £11m+
    B. Gerrard -> N'Zog - leaves def of Kolarov, Knight, Onuoha, which doesn't seem ideal either

So tempting to just use the WC...

He sounds really up for it on Sunday to me - good odds on Spurs winning (at home) against Utd (away, with all those draws...)

The way we play against the big teams at home, they should be worried - We're 2/1 with Paddy Power, bless his cottons; whatever happened to the days when he'd offer us proper *decent* odds on bets? The Torres one was the last proper value bet, and we know what happened there, don't we?

(The bet came in, if you don't remember)

Anyway, rant over - continue with the RMTs if you must

Very tempted to get Bentley in, feels like he could thrive as the main man and debut in a derby you know he's gonna have a point to prove. Only problem is it'd have to be for Nasri, who I could only sell for 8.0, ahead of his good fixtures. Though I am bringing Fab in for Lamps after this GW, so wondering if Fab and him (and Djourou) is a bit much.

With you mate, Getting Djourou in and have Nasri. Wondering whether wildcarding Fabs in next week is overkill.

Those fixtures do look _amazing_ though! Surely there must be big points for the Arse coming up.

Aye, and I've been hurt before with Fabs and injuries, Nasri is nice insurance to have. If it weren't for the money I stood to lose on Nasri should that happen I'd pull the trigger now.

In a mini-league infested with Carlos Tevez captaining, and given im wildcarding, do I follow suit or go for Dzeko as a differential? The guys a pure talent, suited to the PL and will most likely be further forward than Tevez but the Argentine is one pens, fk's and anything else he can get his hands on.

I was pretty much all set on bringing Dzeko in as a gamble, but then realised he hasn't actually played a game since before the winter break in Germany. If he starts, I'd be very surprised.

Robinson is due back in 3 weeks time according to their website. I'd sell - get some Foster in yer blood.

PS. Heard about the Elmander price rise? Apparently he's going up 0.3! Worth getting in for a week just for the $$$, knowhmean?
