The Knee Jerk

With double game weeks aplenty, wildcards being dealt and delusions of grandeur in the minds of Fantasy Football managers across the globe, finding a bargain is going to be high on the list of things to do during the wildcard window in order to get the combination of players desired. How, therefore, might one go about finding a deal to quench the thirst for the best possible Fantasy football team for the forthcoming weeks?

Thankfully this weekend has presented or highlighted some areas which managers can exploit. Managers (real life ones) have shuffled the pack or brought in fresh faces and, in order to keep ahead of the game, it’s up to us to hunt the bargains down and take a gamble. This is the knee jerk so forgive me if these guys don’t play next week. Thou hast been warned.

Personally the area I like to be thrifty the most is in defence where you can find a bargain or two who might just pick up the odd 6 points by doing very little. The logic being that a cheap striker or midfield generally has to be half decent to get a goal or assist whereas a cheap defender only needs to play in a team with a moderate chance of a clean sheet in order to get an additional four points. So who has come to my attention over the weekend (and before) who might fit the bill? Read on people, read on;

Name: Kyle Walker Club: Aston Villa Position: Right Back Value: 4.0m

Walker has signed for Aston Villa on loan from Spurs for the remainder of the season. Whilst he had a quiet game today it is telling that Houllier threw him straight in at the deep end in the Midlands derby. A player with attacking intent, the England Under 19 international spent the early part of the season with QPR where he caught the eye for his marauding runs forward. If he can do the same for Villa, with the (albeit slim) chance of a cleansheet, at 4.0m he could be a real steal. Villa also have a double game week this weekend as well – Back of the net!

Name: Martin Kelly Club: Liverpool Position: Right Back Value: 4.2m

Since the return of King Kenneth one noticeable change has been the introduction of Martin Kelly at right back with the usual candidate Glen Johnson shifted to left back. Whilst there is no certainty this little arrangement will continue, Kelly has impressed in his recent starts and, before this, in Europe with the Reds. With another double game next week and the much maligned Paul Konchesky seemingly out of favour, Kelly may well be worthy of our attention. He even got an assist last week – Cashback!

Name: Johan Djourou Club: Arsenal Position: Centre Back (or midfield if you’re Chris Waddle) Value: 4.2m

He’s been chatted about a lot on the boards as a potential addition to our Fantasy Football teams and it’s understandable why. In the eight games that the Swiss international has finished this season he’s kept five clean sheets. He’s also picked up 6 points of the bonus variety as well which means he’s catching the eyes of the “experts’. Squillaci and Vermaelen would be the obvious threats to his place but they are currently both injured and, with favourable fixtures and a double game in the offing, now could be the time to invest. Jurassic Park!

Name: Stephen Carr Club: Birmingham Position: Right Back Value: 4.4m

Ok, he’s been about for ages and yeah his stats aren’t exactly amazing but look at Birmingham’s fixtures and consider the fact that the former Republic of Ireland international is a consistent in the heart (well on the right) of the Blues defence. Even if the right back only plays 90 minutes in game week 27 and concedes a goal in each thats a cool six points right there. Whilst we have to bear in mind fixture reshuffling due to cup commitments it doesn’t hurt to dream. Jackanackanory!

And by popular demand

Name: David Murphy Club: Birmingham Position: Left Back Value: 3.9m

He’s bald, looks a lot like Stephen Carr, plays for Birmingham (but on the opposite side) and offers the same potential as the vehicular named Irishman. The only difference is that he has been drafted in as replacement for the crocked Scott Dann, who looks set to miss the remainder of the season, with Ridgwell moving more centrally. At .5 less than the aforementioned Carr he offers greater value, but the risk could come should Alex McLeish look to the transfer market or should Martin Jiranek be given a nod centrally and Ridgewell moved out wide. Either way its a watch this space with Murphy. Smell my cheese!

One for fellow Arsenal fans: who would you rather sign, Cahill or Samba?

I'm a huge fan of Cahill, think he's got a John Terry-like presence at the back, a leader with defensive class.

But then it's just too easy to imagine Samba in an Arsenal shirt. And he'd bring us the muscle and set-piece threat we've been lacking for a while...

Even if the triple game week is off, they'll have DGW in GW27 and GW29, but no game in GW28.

i have a dilemma. Plan on using WC GW27. Thought it wise to load a team for the doubles and triple. Im wondering if its worth the potential one week haul to alter a team that will take weeks to put back to "normal". Such as having a birm keeper and defender.

I have a WC that could look like this, i know there are cheaper options in defence but for sake of arguement:

    Foster (3 games)
Begovic (good couple fixtures following weeks)

    Baines (2), r Johnson (3), clichy (2), Coleman (2), simpson (2)

    Fabregas(2), Adam(2), Brunt(2), vdv(2), nani(keeper with 2 next gw)

    RVP (2), odemwingie (2), Carroll(2)
    6.5 in bank
i know i cant play all of them but i already have coleman, simspon, vdv, brunt, adam, fabs and carroll. the extra money can buy a chelsea player for first transfer following week for their double.

is this a good use of WC or am i mad?

Ive got 8, so far behind that I need to make the most of the double weeks and GW28, a lot in my league seem unprepared so hoping to make up some ground.

      Going...

      Kingston
      Vidic Evra Walker
      Fabregas Lampard Nani NZogbia Adam
      Van Persie Campbell

      Foster, Coleman, Odemeingie and Jara

That then leaves me 3 weeks to take Walker and NZogbia out for 2 Brummies for GW27 while rolling over a transfer so I have 2 free ones for 28.

I'm hoping to make back at least 70 points in these 3 key weeks.

They are at home in their first game, that's where you should be looking to score the points with anything else being a bonus.

Either way, I have NZogbia, I'm hoping he scores his points and gets his bonus v Villa, anything else is a bonus as they say, same as with DJ.

I got 8 doubles, if they score 8 each over 2 games and I get the captain right (for a change) then I'm looking at a decent score to claw back some ground.

Yeah same here, might only have 4 double Gw's, 2 utd, and 2 blackpool. Saying that, i'd probably play vdv and bench Dj Campbell, can't see him scoring in both games this time.

not sure abaout a wigan defender at all. at least al habsi should have a bucket load of saves in that game to maks the inevitable conceeding of goals. it seems sensible to say alcaraz will have 1 point at best to add to the villa game

            +1.
kyle walker might not be such a bad idea for the price, but they have city at home who play much better away from home. Then at DW. which isnt all much better then alcaraz.
hangeland seems like a decent straight swap but not long term

City are a negative side, even more so away.

similiarly you know that n'zog and rodders should have at least 2 points to take into the villa game. not great but a nicer buffer than the most likely outcome for a wigan defender

Stam a decent attacking full back for Wigan, but your right will be lucky to take any points into the villa fixture, but you could say that about all the double gw teams with maybe the exception of man u

Anyone offer some advice for DGW players for next week.

    Drogba to Berba
    Barton to Dempsey/Downing
    Kyrgiakos to Skrtel/Hangeland

Leaning towards Dempsey and Skrtel because my rival has Hangeland.

Is it worth picking 2 Liverpool defenders for the next gameweek?
I was thinking Kelly and Skrtle.

guys i know you're probably bored stiff of this, but if you can RMWCT:

    VDS, (begovic),
HUGHES, djourou, coleman, (r johnson), (simpson),
    fabregas, ADAM, N'ZOGBIA, NANI, (vdv),
    CAMPBELL, rvp, ROONEY/BERB

it would mean transferring out tevez, with a view to getting him back in but is this very risky, bordering on insane?

Fairly similar to mine, especially the back line. Im keeping Tevez in I think, I could get Rooney but not sure if I want to, might lose a lot of money too.

    Rafael has ballsed this up...

    Currently i've got

    Hart Habsi
    Rafael Ashley Cole Onouha Konchesky
    VDV Nani Nasri Zog YaYa
    Wellbeck DJ Torres

That only leaves me with 5 playing twice..i was going to make two transfers with one being Berbatov but now i'm not sure??
