A night of FA Cup replays saw the Premier League second-string get another run-out. When Man City are involved however, there’s no such thing as fringe players, as Mancini rotated riches to re-establish David Silva’s marriage with Carlos Tevez to devastating effect; a plucky Leicester City the latest to come out worst in another goal-strewn Eastlands encounter…

Roberto Mancini suggested that he’d make changes to his City lineup for the replay with Leicester and so it proved. Kolo Toure, Nigel De Jong, Edin Dzeko, and Gareth Barry all dropped out for this one with Joleon Lescott, James Milner, David Silva, and Patrick Vieira all handed starts. Interestingly, Mancini left his full-backs untouched as both Pablo Zabaleta and Aleksandar Kolarov held their starting roles – that might suggest that the Italian has now decided on this pairing as his first choice – the lineup for the Villa game should reveal more on that.

David Silva made a return to the starting lineup then after earning a recall to the bench in Saturday’s win over Wolves. Silva showed his class in the first-half with a pinpoint pass to feed Adam Johnson; the England man duly dispatched City’s second from 18-yards to send a further message to his manager but, in truth, Johnson should have notched further goals and made a bigger statement. Silva meanwhile ended the game with two assists and looks assured for a starting role at Villa.

Carlos Tevez started then when perhaps this seemed a timely occasion to hand him a rest. The City skipper didn’t take long to show his qualities however, blasting home a rasping volley to give the home side the lead on 15 minutes. The night then took a twist for Tevez as he conspired to miss his second consecutive penalty after the break. Tevez also fluffed from 12-yards in the recent win over Blackpool and there’s now every possibility that he could surrender spot-kick duties in the league. A slight concern for buoyant Tevez owners.

Kolarov delivered the goal he has been threatening in the league by sealing City’s win with a 20-yard effort late on. His owners will hope that that strike will be enough to cement his start for the trip to Villa Park, although it must be considered that, with Villa’s wide men such a threat, Mancini may opt for Micah Richards or Jerome Boateng at right-back, with the reliable Zabaleta switching to the left.

Indeed, Mancini spent much of his post-match analysis picking apart his team’s defending, suggesting that he will surely shake-up his back four again at Villa.

“It’s great – but only for the supporters! I’d enjoy it if we scored four goals and did not concede any, but every time it’s two goals, three goals. We must improve…If you keep conceding in each game, you will get to the moment when you don’t score enough to win. Because of this, we have to improve.”

Wolves’ 5-0 demolition in front of a paltry 10,000 at Molineux provided some respite from their Premeir League struggles. Mick McCarthy was able to welcome back Jody Craddock and Karl Henry following lengthy injury lay-offs, they came into the starting lineup at the expense of Christophe Berra and Nenad Milijas. The changes didn’t end there as Marcus Hahnemann replaced Wayne Hennessey in goal, while Steven Mouyokolo and Geoffrey Mujangi Bia came in for Stephen Ward and Matt Jarvis; Mouyokolo took up a role at left-back. McCarthy will likely shuffle again for the home clash with Liverpool this weekend – Henry and Craddock will be expected to keep their starting roles which may well see Berra or Richard Stearman at the back, and Milijas in midfield, miss out.

Wolves will face Stoke City in the fourth round – they came through their replay with Cardiff with the aid of extra-time. Jonathan Walters grabbed both the goals for Tony Pulis’ men.

The Stoke boss made no less than 10 changes to the side that inflicted defeat on Bolton at the Britannia. The inclusion of Mamady Sidibe on the bench was perhaps the most notable – Pulis is a big fan of the lofty striker and we can expect him to figure in league matches over the next month. Ironically, the only player who retained his starting role – Danny Higginbotham, picked up an injury and was forced off on 10 minutes – he will be a doubt for the trip to Fulham with Danny Collins likely to return to the league lineup if he fails to make it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

kolarov kolarov kolarov, what to do with kolarov??

i have 8 dbl gwk players already and one freebie

2 freebies would be nice for gwk25 tho as i wildcard the week after and when we get the arsenal and utd lineups before kickoff i can take a punt on a walcott or hernandez for one week

thoughts? play kolarov or switch to a different defender?

gwk25 utd and arsenal both play on the tues evening so we'll have the lineups before the deadline

as im wildcarding straight after i can take a punt on the likes of hernandez or walcott for that one game and get rid straight after

I'd sit tight, for sure. You're about as well set up as anyone for this week. Only things that concerns me is your lack of Arsenal players. The only transfer I could be tempted to do this week is Tevez > RVP.

Kolarov will still be first choice for City I believe. I'd sit tight on him for now.

I'm using my 2 frees this week and WC next to get rid of all my liverpool and bring in arsenal. PErsonally I@m not selling carroll as I@d lose0.5 and I'm quite happy to bench him for a few and go 5 in midfield. Fab to Nasri looks crabby to me if you've got WC coming up, concentrate on the short term.

...but is it a better fixture than Arsenal home to Everton?

I could hold off another week and play for GW25:

            Gordon
            Vidic Skrtel Kolarov
            Nasri Nani VdV Adam Zog

id be happy with that team but agree arsenal players could easily outscore the liverpool ones, i just think if u can leave it to gwk26 the transfer window will be shut

ACtually you've almost sold me on waiting one more week for the WC, my wildcard team's defence doesn't look great for 25. It's just going to mean a few short term moves in between - Vidic and Kuyt in this week, perhaps Nasri next.

Yeah i still cant decide whether it is worth it long term of not. I would like Fab in my team but im heappy with my midfield of: VDV/Bale/Nani/Nasri/Adam

I would also loose 0.5mil but Carroll - RVP would allow some great additional Arsenal cover if i do decide to keep my midfield.

To elaborate, I'm referring to the sense of optimism that we have all felt this season at some point, only to be crushed by reality. I'm genuinely optimistic of a big score going into this week, but the last times I thought that I was brought back to earth big time.

        Team is
        VDS (Foster)
        Coleman-Evatt-Hangeland (Djourou, Huth)
        Fab-Nani-Adam-Nzog-VDV
        RVP-TEvez (Odemwingie)

It's easy to write off clubs that have not won anything in a while, but a club with a history like Aston Villa is always massive to me.

I think Nottingham Forest are a massive club!

I almost married Darren Bent last season due to my love of his goals. He saved many a gameweek and was the only player I had all season. If he can replicate that I'll be all over him like a drunk 50 year old woman at a Chippendales gig.

    LOL @ SUPER MARIO AGAIN!

"Our attack of Balotelli-Tevez-Dzeko is the best in the world," Balotelli told Extra Time.

"We are the strongest. Better even than Barcelona and Real Madrid."

Certainly better than current Premier League leaders Manchester United, whose main striker has scored just three times this season.

"He [Rooney] is a very good player but not the best in Manchester," added Balotelli, the controversial star who also feels United fans admire him.

"Do United fans insult me? No, they stop me in the street and say: 'Mario, come to us',

"But I dream of beating them because I know how much the City fans care, they are wonderful with me."

Now, what has happened to Man Citys defence? I have owned Hart almost since the start and he has been brilliant. I hardly ever rotate him because City ‘were’ capable of keeping cleansheets against anyone, eg Arsenal, Man U.

But the last few games, they have been conceding for fun. Is it time to cash in on Hart? Maybe go for an attacking defender instead? Does anyone have any insight into this?

I would hold off a couple of weeks, if Kolarov (I know I know I know) looks secure I think he's the better option long term.

Playing around with WC teams you could actually have a pretty damn good defence spending very little, so many good cheapies this year - Coleman, Huth, Bardsley, Walker, Murphy etc.

I had Kolarov for about 5 or 6 Gameweeks but got rid last week with my WC seeing better value in DGW players. I suppose City’s defence will just need monitoring over the next few GW’s.

Obviously with Dzeko involved the team now tactics might change again

Hart has 11 CS, 7 in the first 13 GWs.

Kolarov has been playing regularly since GW 13 and got 1 CS in GW13 then the only other CS he got was the game where he got sent off.

So in the 10 GWs since GW13 Kolarov has play significantly in 8 of them and Hart has had 4 CS and in those games Kolarov played 78, 0, 57 and 0 mins.

So in conclusion in no PL game where Kolarov has played the full 90 mins have City kept a clean sheet.

      He's cursed.

In my WC I was worried about covering Cities defence, not anymore, as long as Kolarov plays they won't keep a cleanie, he may get the odd attacking bonus but IMO first and foremost u have to pick defenders with clean sheets, attacking points r a bonus.

Love a quick yes/no for the below if anyone’s got a sec:
Question is...is it WC time!? I’ve still got both left. So thought i’d push the button this week and tailor my team for GW24 doubles, with an eye on GW27 doubles as well. I’d then use my other WC in GW28 to pick a team for the rest of the season! Im trying to catch a rival.
    Current team:
    Kingson
    Coleman Rafael Kolorov
    Fabs VdV Nani Adam
    RVP Tevez Carroll
    No free transfers.

    Thanks in advance!

out of those 3 if you can afford it, id go with the last option. i wouldnt like to get in the injury prone ferdinand even thoughs he's a good defender when he plays. how about young kelly for liverpool as a possible short term player for the double gameweek?

    Torres, Rooney or Bent?

This stupid Bent transfer has really messed up my WC thinking. Does anyone with a knowledge of Houllier's teams remember if a single striker tended to do well with him (I'm thinking Owen with Heskey as his partner) - what happened at Inter?

Just wondering if Bent will fire or will he be drowned out by Houllier's tactics?

On the Rooney/Torres options - both misfiring, one plays for a team that has form the other I've been backing since December would hate to drop him and find him scoring a hattrick...

Team value seems to matter a lot less this year. For most of my decent run recently I've had 4 or 5 mil in the bank. So many mid priced options scoring as well as Drogba, Lampard, Fabs, Torres, Rooney etc. The idea of chasing value with this second WC seems completely pointless. You're going to make 0.3 or something, that's really nothing if you've got 104+ already I think.

I'm inclined to go for the first one. Berbs stats at home when Rooney plays are immense...so much so it may not matter if he does nothing against Blackpool

Fab is always first choice over Nasri

And Evra is a cheaper way into Man Utd's defence. Vidic would be top choice but not at the expense of Fab and Berbs.

rooney is yet to convince me.

I remember Rooney's 64 pts as dgw capt last season fondly. But is he anywhere near that form this season?

I think it was Applebonkers who posted it yesterday, but apparently when Rooney and Berbatov have both started at home in the league. Berba has scored 7,7,17,25,13. Massive.

it was applebonkers. It blew my socks off when I read it. I still don't have Berbatov, but those stats are really quite something.

I'd go with Berbatov, that record speaks for itself. Nasri is also not a certain start, plus Evra might get you an assist or two 😉

Indeed. If Rooney and Berbatov are starting (we get the United team before the deadline don't we?) then he'll probably be my captain.

Even with the will he/won't he play questions for the Blackpool game, just the first game may be huge.

It's a double game week so deadline is 11.30 on Saturday.

I can see double figures from Berbs in the first game alone as you say so I think it's worth the risk.

Him being so much cheaper allows me Fabregas over Nasri which is a no brainer.

Such a tough one, I'm wrestling with pretty much the exact same problem.

      So no idea I'm afraid!

      Cheers guys.

Fabregas at home to Wigan sounds just too good to miss.

Vidic is first choice but 8.1 is a very deep reach, Evra seems to have been forgotten with Rafael cementing a place for 5.6.

Berb is flakey but at least he has a hattrick in him, Rooney looks like a spent force but penos and less rotation risk make is an option.

The only spanner in the works is Darren Bent, I really want to get him in (I'm a Villa fan).

wouldn't be a bad shout to transfer in Bent, I don't have him so he'll probably score :p
