So Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Darren Bent from Sunderland for a club record fee, believed to be in the region of a staggering £24 million. The striker is set to be formally unveiled at a press conference this evening.

As we stated yesterday when the news of Villa’s bid and Bent’s transfer request broke, the move seems an odd one and not necessarily an event that will immediately boost the Fantasy potential of a striker who has dipped considerably in returns following last season’s 24 league goal haul.

Bent has so far recorded just 8 league strikes, despite Sunderland showing decent form and “overachieving” – the Black Cats currently sit in 6th place. Villa, in contrast, are languishing just above the relegation places having suffered a stuttering season with Gerard Houllier’s arrival failing to spark a revival in fortunes.

Goals have been a major problem – Villa have notched just 24 in 22 league games. This aggressive move in the transfer market should provide a solution. Bent has proven himself on the Premier League stage in previous seasons and, if Villa can maximise the service to him, he will surely start repaying the substantial fee sooner rather than later.

While Bent’s Fantasy Premier League price of 8.6 is unlikely to tempt immediate investment at a time when the likes of Carlos Tevez, Robin Van Persie and even Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, are attracting the bulk of the investment up front, Villa’s new acquisition must be watched and a glimmer of form could spark interest. Villa’s run of opponents between Gameweek 30 and 36 looks a particularly promising period for Bent and his new team-mates.

Villa are one of the teams facing a double fixture in Gameweek 24 with a home clash with City, followed by a trip to Wigan next week. Those fixtures appear to offer Bent an immediate platform to register his first goal in the claret and blue.

Fantasy Managers must also consider the knock-on effects of this deal; if Houllier can retain both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, then their potential to earn assists will surely be boosted by the arrival of a proven finisher. The same could be said of Marc Albrighton if he can regain a starting role.

We must also wait to assess the impact on the January transfer window. Only today there have been articles suggesting that should the Bent deal be completed, it would ripple throughout the Premier League and prove the catalyst for a number of moves that will likely influence our Fantasy selections over the coming weeks. John Carew’s switch to West Brom could well be the first development of many to emerge in the next week or so.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Using the wildcard really does give you many headaches, pretty settled on my front 8 but not really sure whether to go Berbatov or Rooney? I'm just worried Berbatov is going to rip it up at Old Trafford.

Also, my defence, I don't see any value in more expensive defenders at the moment. Do people think having Kelly, Pantsil, Djourou & Murphy in my wildcard team is too risky?

i have a feeling berbatov may be rested for one of the games. Don't know why. But i'd be cautious in choosing an outof form rooney. its a toughie.

I think pantsil is a good shout but wouldnt have more than one of those at the moment!

Literally no others to go for though, unless you go for a Skrtel not worth the cash, Evra who isn't worth the cash or Hangeland who definitely isn't worth the cash.

To be honest I think they are all but nailed on anyway, Kelly is very highly rated, probably Liverpool's best player at the moment. Murphy will be alright due to Dann's injury and Djourou is playing well in an Arsenal defence riddled of injuries.

As long as I get through the next 2-3 without no problems I'll be fine as I'll have spare cash after that to get a better defence.

Can't decide what to do this week!

Definitely taking out either Baines/Kolarov --> Evra
Leaves me with only 4 non DGW players in starting XI - Coleman, Nasri, VDV, Tevez.

    Then I have 3 choices..
    A. Double up on MU defense with Baines/Kolarov -> Vidic (bench Coleman) 4 point hit
    B. Carroll --> Berbatov (and bench VDV or Nasri) 4 point hit
    C. Leave it alone

    Opinions needed! cheers

I watched the whole Chelsea game on Saturday, Drogba is a spent force, last season he would have scored a hattrick with the opportunities he had.

          My current thinking is

          Rafael, Malouda & Drogba out

          for either..

          Vidic, Fabregas & Bent

          or

          Vidic, Nasri & Rooney

          4 points spent.

What's peoples opinion of Carroll at the moment?

I have him on my bench, thinking of putting him into the team but I obviously want him to play 60+ mins, or not at all. Is a 5 minute cameo more likely?

I don't know what Pardew is like with regards to that sort of thing..

The problem is that its a muscle tear, which is can be a tricky fix, especially as its on his right thigh - so basically any time he shoots or anything it could go again if not fully healed. Hard to predict when he's back though Pardew says he will HOPEFULLY be ready for Spurs.
      Personally, I might sell him.

tevez to be rested this weekend vs Villa?
90mins+ (?) tonight might be a bit much even for an orc?
