So Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Darren Bent from Sunderland for a club record fee, believed to be in the region of a staggering £24 million. The striker is set to be formally unveiled at a press conference this evening.

As we stated yesterday when the news of Villa’s bid and Bent’s transfer request broke, the move seems an odd one and not necessarily an event that will immediately boost the Fantasy potential of a striker who has dipped considerably in returns following last season’s 24 league goal haul.

Bent has so far recorded just 8 league strikes, despite Sunderland showing decent form and “overachieving” – the Black Cats currently sit in 6th place. Villa, in contrast, are languishing just above the relegation places having suffered a stuttering season with Gerard Houllier’s arrival failing to spark a revival in fortunes.

Goals have been a major problem – Villa have notched just 24 in 22 league games. This aggressive move in the transfer market should provide a solution. Bent has proven himself on the Premier League stage in previous seasons and, if Villa can maximise the service to him, he will surely start repaying the substantial fee sooner rather than later.

While Bent’s Fantasy Premier League price of 8.6 is unlikely to tempt immediate investment at a time when the likes of Carlos Tevez, Robin Van Persie and even Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, are attracting the bulk of the investment up front, Villa’s new acquisition must be watched and a glimmer of form could spark interest. Villa’s run of opponents between Gameweek 30 and 36 looks a particularly promising period for Bent and his new team-mates.

Villa are one of the teams facing a double fixture in Gameweek 24 with a home clash with City, followed by a trip to Wigan next week. Those fixtures appear to offer Bent an immediate platform to register his first goal in the claret and blue.

Fantasy Managers must also consider the knock-on effects of this deal; if Houllier can retain both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, then their potential to earn assists will surely be boosted by the arrival of a proven finisher. The same could be said of Marc Albrighton if he can regain a starting role.

We must also wait to assess the impact on the January transfer window. Only today there have been articles suggesting that should the Bent deal be completed, it would ripple throughout the Premier League and prove the catalyst for a number of moves that will likely influence our Fantasy selections over the coming weeks. John Carew’s switch to West Brom could well be the first development of many to emerge in the next week or so.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have them both, hedging my bets against that douche Chicharito...the 'Fantasy Roach'. Not big enough to acquire or call the exterminator, but always popping up to embarass you when entertaining. Wayne's due and most likely to play 180 minutes at the forward position. Two schools of thought regarding SAF and how he will play Berbs: 1) He holds him out of one game and plays him almost 90 for another. 2) He plays him about 72-76 minutes in both matches and brings the lil mexican on late as a change of pace. This is a come-up week for SAF he can't screw this up playing an Obertan or Chicharito more than 45 minutes.

Also remember Berbatov shines against mediocre to shite teams, he'll be certain to pull a brace outta his ass for one of them...maybe it's his lazy disposition?

Evening all. I've spent the last 3 hours trawling through enough stats to make my eyes bleed. Unfortunately, the team currently shining at me from my screen is £1M over budget - can anyone suggest where I can shave this annoying million from?

    VdSar Foster
Baines Nelson Bosingwa Djourou Johnson R
    Adam VdV Nani Fab Yaya
    Odemwingie Tevez Berbatov

In an ideal world I'd keep my keepers, along with Fab, Nani & VdV..

Coleman for Baines, that'll definitely save ya 2.5 mil. And you're probably getting 45% more attacking...and essentially an attacking holding midfielder (if there is such a thing...lol). Or Simon Davies instead of Yaya he has a DGW w/ FUlham and will leave you a .9 mil surplus.

Mmm, not so sure about this now. I've selected the players I wish to transfer in and it confirms that no points will be deducted for those players, but no mention of the other two players I also transferred in earlier in the week costing me a 4 point hit. Anyone else done this before and got away with the points hit?

I think those 4 points may stand so I may be as well leaving the wildcard to next week...

    VDV Nani(C) Fabregas Adam
    Berba Tevez

    Subs: Jaask, Carroll, Kolarov, Brunt

Is this team good enough for GW24? Very tempted to bring in Torres or RVP, but it would have to be for Tevez and a -4 hit.

That's what im thinkin, I certaintly wouldn't bet against him scoring against City & Wigan, from what I've heard Villa create a lot but don't have a finisher, step forward Mr Bent! The only thing I don't like about Bent is he's goals and that's it, he seems allergic to baps and rarely gets assists but if he finds that scoring form again...

For what its worth, he's on my bench at the moment. I would be surprised if he rested: Spurs still think they have a shot at the title.

I'll be benching him but it is indeed very dangerous.

Redknapp doesn't do resting, he'll play if he's fit.
