United show their resilience to fight back and down a valiant Blackpool. Villa grab their second win on the spin and start to climb the table, while Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will forever recall the Gameweek as “Berbatov week”, with the Bulgarian’s five goal, 29 point haul haunting those who opted for Wayne Rooney instead. Elsewhere, Arsenal overcome Ipswich to reach the Carling Cup Final and possibly create some Gameweek 28 fixture congestion, although that’s all dependant on rescheduling…

United once again showed a never-say-die attitude, going 2-0 down to Blackpool before a resurgent performance in the latter stages of the second half maintained their unbeaten league record. Sir Alex Ferguson started with a 4-3-3 formation, with Chris Smalling continuing in the centre of defence at the expense of the injured Rio Ferdinand, before changing to 4-4-2 on the half-hour mark.

The introduction of Ryan Giggs on the United left made the difference, and, after Dimitar Berbatov pulled one back, it was Giggs who supplied the killer pass for Javier Hernandez’s equaliser before Berbatov scored the winner, his fifth of this double Gameweek. Wayne Rooney started on the left-flank and was a peripheral figure throughout; he was subbed midway through the second half. A head injury to right-back Rafael will need to be monitored by his Fantasy Owners, with the youngster stretchered off and taken to hospital late on following a nasty clash of heads. Concussion will likely see him miss the weekend FA Cup tie with Southampton but he could well be fine for a return against Villa in Gameweek 25. Ferguson had this to say on that situation in his post-match comments…

“He’s gone to hospital…We just hope he’s okay. He’s got concussion, we know that, we just hope everything else is okay.”

Blackpool ran out of steam in their bid to end the league leaders’ unbeaten run, and have now lost three games on the trot. Goals from Craig Cathcart and DJ Campbell topped an outstanding first half performance but, in the end, it seemed Ian Holloway’s side had nothing left in the tank as United hit back, with the pace of Hernandez coming off the bench proving a decisive switch by Ferguson.

Two Charlie Adam assists and three Bonus Points will no doubt please his Fantasy Owners, but it could have been more; Blackpool were denied what seemed a certain penalty with the score at 2-0, and the decision left Holloway livid on the sidelines. They’ll need to pick themselves up quick for the next league game, at home to West Ham.

Gerard Houllier surprised many by dropping Marc Albrighton to the bench for the visit to Wigan. The Villa boss also changed his central midfield pairing from the weekend win against Man City, giving Jean Makoun his debut and bringing Nigel Reo Coker back into the fray. Young Nathan Baker made his debut at left-back in the vital 2-1 win which saw Villa edge away from the drop zone. Baker came in for Ciaran Clark who is nursing a hamstring problem – Houllier is hopeful that he’ll be back in contention for the weekend Cup tie.

Interestingly, Ashley Young took the penalty to put Villa 2-0 up, despite new boy Darren Bent being on the pitch, an indication of Young, perhaps, being the number one for spot-kicks. Young, subject of this week’s Technical Area, also grabbed the three Bonus Points for his performance.

James McCarthy was welcomed back by Wigan following a three month absence and, despite the young midfielder finding the net from 25 yards out, it wasn’t enough to prevent Roberto Martinez’s side from slipping to defeat in this vital match. Martinez made a number of changes from the weekend defeat at the Emirates, ultimately with little effect. Wigan have now won just one of their last nine league games, a worrying sign for fans of the Latics. Double Gameweek returns from Wigan were predictably scarce.

Arsene Wenger ensured there were no slip-ups in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi with Ipswich as he fielded a strong side, including Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie, for the 3-0 Emirates win to clinch a spot in the final. Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott took their place on the Arsenal bench and, with an FA Cup game with Huddersfield this upcoming weekend, Wenger will surely rest more of his major players ahead of next week’s home league match with Everton. Bacary Sagna is a doubt for the weekend Cup tie – he suffered concussion in a collision with keeper Wojciech Szczesny and was taken to hospital.

With the Carling Cup Final taking place in the weekend of Gameweek 28, this could possibly put the Gunners match with Spurs at risk, though there’s every possibility the match could be rescheduled for midweek of the same game week, as Mark‘s article last night pointed out.

wildcarding in gw27 could be a real headache. My tevez-berba-torres frontline will be hard to break up and fit in RVP, with tevez having so nice fixtures in gw28/29, berba with a dgw28 and torres home to stoke in gw27 and with RVP possibly missing gw28...

Even with the previous of Berba being dropped, I just can't see it now. Rooney looked all out of sorts again yesterday, and Berba is the one scoring all the goals at the moment.

Even so, at the moment I'd rather Berba playing 7/10 games than Rooney playing 10/10 in my FPL team.

Got 85 points without berbatov....just didn't fancy him. That one backfired! Luckily only 2 people in my mini league captained him, including the leader who by chance also got 85 points. Showed how well rest of my team did...annoying!

      similar for me

i chose dempsey and vidic over berb and rafael

could all work ok out ish as it means i kept carroll and sold rafael and bale.

we shall see. i would never have captained him anyway.

Got my captain % down to 42.5%.
Last season I finished with a captain % of about 67%.
If I matched that this season, I would be in the top 500. Now I'm 12k.

I really like the look of Young from GW26, but can only really sell Berb or Nani to fund it (Torres is going for RvP). Is the talk of the decline of Nani premature? He's had a couple of quiet weeks, but despite the recent scores I'm still more tempted to fund Young by losing Berb than Nani.

Nani has had two quiet games and his confidence looks a little bit low, he wasn't taking on half as many defenders as he should last night, that being said, he is still working the shots, and he did have a good shot saved by the keeper, lets not forget that the Birmingham game saw him play badly and score with a really good shot, he has the guts of all set pieces when Giggs isn't playing, and 3 poor games don't make him a bad fantasy player.

When I am rid of Berbatov and Rooney for their difficult patch coming up, Nani will still be there for cover

I agree, the first 'poor' match was Spurs away, and their left hand side is almost as good as Newcastle's 😉
The second 'poor' match was last night and he was alright, just massively overshadowed by Giggs. I think part of the reaction is down to so many (c)'ing Nani and expecting 40+ off him, particularly when Berbatov did so well. I'll be keeping him on my wildcard team.

I don't have any problem with Nani at all, he's a season keeper as long as either a) he's playing well and scoring points or b) Utd are playing well and scoring goals. At the moment it's more a case of b), which is dragging a) along with fairly good point returns. But usually b) and a) go hand in hand, and even if b) isn't happening, a) often still happens. So yeah... Nani going nowhere for me.

He's definitely coming in as my cheapie as soon as he re-appears, £4.4 is peanuts for him.

Haven't read the link but am guessing you are talking Ben Arfa - I was eyeing that one up myself yesterday. The boy could give some serious value and differential.

Yep, obviously I'm a little biased but such an attacking midfielder who took some of the set pieces at 4.4 is great value.
Obviously it remains to be seen how he recovers from that injury, but he still has great FPL potential.

As you say, is all down to recovery from his injury. He is young so should be okay.

In my position would prefer him to Barton as is more likely to put in a few double digit points hauls to help me catch up rivals, whereas Barton is a great slow and steady option.

I would yep. He took most of the shoot-able free-kicks off Barton, and is surely a good shout for Bp's.

Thanks for the jokes yesterday everyone, went down pretty well last night!
    Here's an amusing story:

    [Talking about a printer]
Donna: Yeah I think I might get a new one
Me: Why? What's wrong with it?
Donna: Nothing it's just a bit old now
Me: ... You know they don't go off, right?

Having looked further into your situation I'm afraid it's terminal.

Your rival did you good and proper this week, with 7.1m sitting in the bank. Just think about the damage they are going to do to you when they decide to invest fully.
