Andy Carroll’s spell on the sidelines is set to continue as it has been widely reported today that the Newcastle top-scorer has suffered a setback in his recovery from a thigh muscle injury. The muscle tear has seen him miss the side’s last five games, four of which were in the Premier League, and it appears that it could be a several more weeks before he is back in contention.

The injury apparently carries a high-risk should Carroll return too soon and it appears that Newcastle are understandably unwilling to gamble the long-term fitness of their star asset.

Manager Alan Pardew had hoped to have him back for the clash with Fulham next Wednesday and duly flew him out to the Magpie’s training camp in Portugal:

“We brought him here [Portugal] to start running, and the disappointing news is that he hasn’t. His injury is in the muscle, just above the tendon where it joins the knee, so it’s not an area that gets great circulation, and therefore doesn’t heal quickly. We’re hoping we can turn him around quickly, but now I have to say that Fulham is definitely out, and possibly even Arsenal [5 Feb – Gameweek 26]. We can’t rush him back.”

The manager went on to add that Carroll is to continue his globe-trotting and fly to Scandinavia for specialist treatment:

“We’ve had a conversation about sending him to the world’s best tendon repair specialist, at the Arctic end of Sweden, and he’s flying out there on Friday.”

Since Gameweek 21, at the beginning of January, Carroll has suffered a mass exodus in the FPL with over 317,000 getting rid, forcing a decline in his valuation from 6.5 to 6.1. Despite this, a surprising 33.3% of FPL managers still have the striker on their books. These latest developments will come as a bitter blow to those optimistically holding on, hopeful of an imminent recovery.

It is easy to see why the striker has proven so popular amongst FPL Managers, valued at just £5.0 million at the start of the season, Carroll has recorded 113 points, including 11 goals, 6 assists and 18 bonus points. But with big question marks hanging over the severity and recovery time involved in this injury, Carroll is currently a liability in Fantasy terms.

Viable replacement options around Carroll’s price-range include Bolton’s Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander who have previously offered strong returns but have declined badly in recent Gameweeks. Newcastle’s stand-ins – Shola Ameobi and Leon Best, offer some value lower down the bracket, but West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie looks the most likely straight swap right now. At 5.2 in the FPL, he has demonstrated form when fit and has a run of kind opponents in front of him which should give him the platform for further returns. This includes an attractive home double fixture (WHM WOL) in Gameweek 27.

The alternative of course is to upgrade Carroll to a high price option. With Robin Van Persie and Dimitar Berbatov currently firing and available for sub 10.0, suddenly there has been a shift from the preferred 3-5-2 formation to a 3-4-3 in the FPL, with investment being moved from midfield areas to in-form heavyweight forwards.

With some Fantasy Managers still sitting on wildcards until the double fixtures of Gameweek 27 arrive, we should expect further funds ploughed towards the big forwards, with Carroll likely to be sold on by the majority of his remaining active owners.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

very informative executioners bong you will be head hunted for this site yet!
As for Coleman I am amazed he has not played for Ireland yet. Trap left him on the subs bench in a friendly v Norway. Trap views him as a full back not a midfielder. Which is even more annoying cos Ireland's full backs are no great shakes!

Big deficit of 32 points on my rival who know's nothing about football so have decided to wildcard
    Team is currently:

    Foster Begovic
    Coleman Djourou Kelly ??? ???
    Fabregas VDV Nani Adam ???
    RVP Berbatov Tevez

    15.0 for remaining 3 places

Midfield options: a) Brunt b)Yaya c) Etherington d) Cheapie for better defence e.g Barton or Ferguson

Defence options: a) Carr b) Johnson c) Simpson d) Samba e) Hutton f) Dawson g) expensive with cheap midfield e.g Kolorov or Rafael

    Please help 😀

Jiranek might get an extended run in the Birmingham team since Dann is out, Villa have a decent run of fixtures too but their defenders are quite pricey. Brunt is a good shout for midfiled, decent fixtures and a double game week in 27 with two home games.

I have Hutton because Tottenhams fixtures are alright and you can get good attacking returns from Hutton. Someone like Collins(Stoke at 4.3) might represent good value as well. Just use the value section on the Budweiser site to give you some ideas.

Your front 7 look great and you'll play them most weeks so pick a cheap midfield who rotates with Adam if possible.

I'd go Ferguson. He's what, 4.1? And his missing gameweek 28 is actually a blessing... you'd not want to play him away at Chelsea anyway and when that game comes around it'll be a double.

That leaves you 10.9 for the other 2... Kole Toure and Simpson maybe. Always nice to have a little cash spare.

That's a real tough one dylamnu if arsenal fly against everton they will more then likely keep a clean sheet. Hangeland is a threat at set pieces. I would lean towards toure and djourou. 40/60

All right I'll do one more and then go to bed.

First of all I'm a bit undecided on the merit of Evra and Toure compared to the cheaper Rafael and Kolarov. I'd probably go with the cheaper ones myself, as you don't get much for the extra money spent.

Out of the front 8 people will probably have opinions on Malouda and Nasri but I think they might work out well. Carroll would have to go for me, and I'd go with Odemwingie instead who seems to score plenty of goals and also has that tasty double coming up.

I guess you can't afford Nasri->Fabregas if you're selling Evra, Toure and Carroll and bring in the three players I mention above?

Just gathering ideas on this for a GW27 wildcard:

    Begovic, Gordon

    Coleman, Rafael, Alex, Ivanovic, Simpson

    Young, Meireles, VDV, Nani, Nasri

    RVP, Odemwingie, Tevez

Defence - I really like the idea of doubling up on Chelsea defenders, Alex could go for Luiz if he signs and is a similar price.

Midfield - I think the inclusions of the increasingly impressive Meireles and Young offers a nice difference to most sides.

Attack - I see RVP and Berbatov as being exchangeable dependant on fixtures. Odemwingie would be replaced by Carroll when he returns fit.

I don't really like Odemwingie long term. You don't really want to alternate RVP and berbs with a transfer, who knows what injuries and suspensions you will face.

I'm going something similar but still with a cheapy midfielder like Adam instead of Meireles and then berbs up front after Odem's double.

But as I said Odemwingie is out for Carroll as soon as he's back, WBA have some nice fixtures in the near future that should see me through.
I won't be alternating them every week, just now and then when the fixtures suit.

Price-wise no, but then there is banked cash for the Odemwingie - Carroll move so its worth a thought.

      Here we go!

For starters it's nice to see a different kind of team put out here. I think you have a couple of decent ideas.

Are you completely uninterested in Birmingham players? After all they do have two doubles. I've not checked how Gordon and Begovic works together but I think Foster is a great pick myself.

I love the idea of two Chelsea defenders. You'll pay the price big time if they don't find their defensive form again of course, but you know that. It might work out a treat too. Goes without saying that you'll have to have a serious look at the Alex situation. Great fantasy prospect but Luiz would add competition and an injury is always just around the corner for poor Alex.

In midfield I love the Meireles pick in one way. He is a player I like a lot and from what I've seen he goes up the pitch plenty so he should get attacking points from various sorces. You will be left with less attacking double gameweekers than most others by gouing down that route though. Consider that.

Nothing to say about the attackers, it's my preferred trio as well.

Oh, and Young is a bit too much of a punt for me. No doubles and I think you're paying much for a player with a habit of going missing.

We'll talk more tomorrow, good night.

Dont Chelsea only have the one game now instead of the double now coming up week 28. So why would you want 2 Chelsea defenders for Fulham away when others have a double and then United (h).

Because I love the idea of two Chelsea's, the other defenders are strong enough for that gameweek. I want to pick the best possible side for the long run, if I dont get the two in now I'll never do it, there will always be something else.

I played mine this week as it represents best chance of price increase before w 27. Some similar players.

Foster + AN OTHER in goal so he can easily be subbed out when Bir have no game
      cheap cheap defence
Fab instead of Nasri. Back to the old reliables of Nani (until DGW only) & Malouda. Interchange one of these with VDV depending on games/ form
ya ya to interchange with brunt for DGW
      Odem Berb VDV

FWIW I like it AtB. Class midfield!!

Personally, I prefer spending less on defence and more on strikers, but saying that the top scoring defenders are 5m or more so maybe my thinking isnt the best.

Good differentials in there too 🙂

That Pilsner Urquell stuff is gorgeous if you like a hoppy beer. Heineken is pretty foul I find, but the worst for me are the American beers - bud, miller, etc they taste of nothing so they have to be -20C to have any character. Bleurgh, tramps piss.

I'm not a fan of Magners or Bulmers. In fact I hate it when I get asked if I want ice with my cider.

Strongbow is drink of choice simply because it's mainstream in most pubs these days.

When I'm back home I usually drink thatchers or Weston's Cider instead. Maybe some Scrumpy Jack or Ashton Press.

LOL - well, they would say that, wouldn't they. Having said that, I love good ale and proper cider - but wouldn't drink it with any food other than cheese! 🙂
