Having been widely expected to move on loan to Bolton in a deal mirroring that of Jack Wilshere’s last winter, Carlos Vela has instead headed for the Hawthorns to star for West Brom until the end of the season. Despite Owen Coyle holding talks with the player, it seems that Bolton couldn’t agree terms and Roberto di Matteo moved quickly to bolster his up front options with the capture of the young Mexican.

Not that it’s all down to money though, as the Baggies Sporting & technical director Dan Ashworth explained upon completion of the deal:

“Arsenal and Carlos had a lot of options and I’m delighted both the club and player have chosen us. It’s been well documented that Arsenal were keen for Carlos to stay in this country and the Premier League but I think a key factor was that they looked favourably on our style of play and performances this season.”

The Statistics

This will be Vela’s third loan stint since joining up with Arsenal; in 2006-07, he starred for Segunda Division Salamanca, scoring 8 goals and assisting 15 times in 31 games. The following season saw him back in Spain, this time in the top division with Osasuna, where he returned 3 goals and 4 assists for the La Liga side.

The past three seasons have seen him stay at the Emirates, but Vela has found it nigh on impossible to force a way into the Gunners first team, with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Samir Nasri, Andrei Arshavin, Theo Walcott and Marouanne Chamakh all ahead of him in the pecking order.

As a result, he’s played just 29 league games for Arsenal, and, with the vast majority of these coming from the subs bench, scored just 3 goals. An established starter for his national team, Vela has returned 9 goals in 34 matches for Mexico, a sign he can find the net with regularity if given the chance.

The Prospects

Di Matteo is a keen fan of a 4-5-1 formation and it will intriguing as to exactly where he sees Vela fitting into the starting XI. The Baggies boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition, saying last night:

Carlos is a new attacking option for us who can play both centrally and in the wide areas. He also has great technical ability and pace and we’re hoping he can make a big impact during the remainder of the season.

There’s no doubt that Carlos has the potential to become a great player and it will hopefully be a win-win situation, where we help him by giving him game time in the Premier League while he helps us achieve our goal.

This Average Position map was taken from West Brom’s last league match, away to Blackburn. Will it be Jerome Thomas (14) who makes way on the left wing or James Morrison (7) as the attacking central midfielder? Will Somen Tchoyi (5), a sub for the Ewood park match, find himself further down the pecking order on the right wing or will Peter Odemwingie (24) be moved out wide for Vela to lead the line?

It’s clear Di Matteo sees Vela’s adaptability as a huge plus and with key players such as Odemwingie and Graham Dorrans spending time on the sidelines with injuries this season, the on-loan Gunner could offer the solution to more than one problem.

With Fantasy Managers eyeing up West Brom attacking options in light of their double game week 27 (WHM, WLV) the next couple of fixtures should give a hint as to exactly how and where Vela fits into the equation. Priced at a mere £4.4m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Vela, backed by the creativity of Chris Brunt, could well prove to be a real bargain as the club go hunting goals in their fight for Premier League survival.

Who is the best midfielder for the next few weeks? (under 10m).
I'm planning to get Cahill when he is back, and I already have Nani and VDV.
    Cheers

Load of horseshite RBJ mate, Katie has had him for a good while. I've been looking at his fixtures and weighing up whether to get him or Cahill for my wildcard side. The saving of 1m or so AND the fact that Young took a penalty when Bent was on the pitch swung it in Young's direction.
I know you like the odd pop at folk but in this case you're wrong, I'm more than capable of making my own judgements.

Well you should have said for the next Gameweek instead of the next few weeks because A.Young is a great prospect after the Man Utd game up until the last couple of GW's. If it's for the next GW then maybe Walcott.

By all logical fixture planning they Should play it the midweek before (16th-ish) and then have their fifth round on that date mentioned (if they win).

The only thing seemingly in the way is they have a game with Fulham on tele on Monday, but on past seasons when this has happened these fixtures have just been moved back into the weekend to allow this. I am surprised at this, but it is certainly possible, if the MNF has a priority.

And if it is the BBC hot of the press and correct, if Chelsea win then the next logical step is they will have a blank in GW28 and United no longer have a double. It's all very convoluted.

I'm merely pointing out that it goes against the logical fixture planning (but certainly not beyond the realm of possibility) that they would hold the replay on that Saturday, given the competitions they are still in.

When we have official confirmation from either side on a date for definite, it will be known to all.

Watchlist has Kolarov high on the list, rightly so as watching MCY we can all see him pushing forward and putting in some dangerous shots/crosses, on corners, etc.

But the Team News lists Zabaleta and Richards as likely starters...so do you rate Kolarov a rotation risk unworthy of the 5.7 price OR a nice buy about ready to bring a run of good returns?

Kolarov is a much safer pick than Richards/Zabaleta. Don't understand why the scouts never seem to think that he'll play.

Exactly, with Dzeko & Tevez playing there is even more of a chance Kolarov will play to provide natural width down the left.

Carlo said a few weeks ago that Alex could be back for the first leg against Copenhagen (22nd Feb), and that's the last I've heard on the matter.

When he's back fully fit, he'll be first choice.

Murphy looks like he wont play now, so get rid of him for Simpson. There is also no point in getting Ethers and Dempsey as you cannot play 5 mids and 3 strikers. Better to upgrade one and downgrade the other

According to twitter (various sources, none particularly reputable) Newcastle are demanding £30m for Carroll.
Now this is daft money granted, and many people would say take the money and run, however Newcastle United would lose far more than £30million if we get relegated, and with the window soon to close we would have the rest of the season with Best and Ameobi up front, relegation would be a real possibility.

Having Carroll upfront would mean Tottenham playing even more hoofball than they do with Crouch up top.

I'm looking forward to the first time Sp*rs line up with a midfield five or Huddlestone, Modric, Bale, VDV and Pienaar. Some serious technical ability there, with Kranjcar on the bench too.

    Begovic, Robinson
    Coleman, Kolorov, Djourou, Simpson, Kelly
    VDV, Nani, Walcott, Adam, Dempsey*
    Tevez, Berba, RVP

*The plan is that next week or the week after I will get Cahill in for Dempsey, he is only short term.

Not sure why they are so keen on Manuel Neuer either, he's looked flappy when i've seen him play although a good shot stopper.

De Gea would be my pick, even if he's not as experienced as Stelks.

So do we think Liverpool are holding out for a much bigger offer or serious about keeping Torres?

I for one would not want a player who doesn't want to be there, especially if someone was trying to give me £40+million for him. Especially with Suarez on the way.

Liverpool aren't going anywhere this season they should just write it off and rebuild with all that lovely Torres money in the summer.

I would also like to see what Nando can do in a Chelseas shirt, I think he would be epic.

Yeah yeah alright. Lets continue with Lampard and Gerrard because that has worked a f*cking dream the last few years.
                  Brilliant.

He's hardly a midfield anchor. He's a CAM, a bit like Gerrard. No point playing him there.

Agreed. Whilst I think Capello was correct in his unreserved praise for Wilshere - who I think will be a truly excellent footballer in the future - I don't agree at all with him that Wilshere should become a 'Makelele type' player.

The role he plays for Arsenal is a fairly defensive, but he's part of a double pivot with Song, and that's the role he should play for England too, I just don't know who he should play alongside... Huddlestone?!

With Wilshere and Joshy McEccs running the midfield in a few years time, we'll have a serious side!

What do people think of this wc team?

    Gomes Begovic
    Coleman Hangeland Kelly Djourou Simpson
    Nani Nasri VDV Adam Brunt
    Tevez Berbatov RVP

    With the following plan
    GW26
    No transfer
    GW 27
    Hangeland --> Carr
    GW 28
    Djourou + Nasri --> Rafael + Cahill
