With the bulk of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Manager’s line-ups exuding a certain familiarity – the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez occupying the forward positions and Gareth Bale, Nani, Rafael Van der Vaart and Samir Nasri all midfield staples – it is this time of the season, with around 14 Gameweeks remaining, that Managers are crying out for a key ‘differential’ to give them the edge over their rivals.

Having understandably been neglected by the FPL masses so far this season, Villa have had a change in fortunes having just recorded their first back-to-back Premier League victories of the season with convincing wins over Manchester City and Wigan. Ashley Young, also the subject of last week’s Technical Area, has played a pivotal role in this. With a current FPL ownership of 4.1% compared to the likes of Van der Vaart (36.9%) and Nani (42.5%), Young could be that key differential.

Gerard Houllier’s recent tactics seems to be paying dividends for the side. The Manchester City victory saw Darren Bent as a lone striker, supported by an attacking midfield three of Gabriel Agbonlahor on the left, Ashley Young in the centre and Albrighton on the right with Stewart Downing dropping back into a deeper central midfield two alongside Stiliyan Petrov. Then, against Wigan, Houllier shifted things around slightly, with Downing moving to the right flank and Nigel Reo-Coker and new signing Jean Makoun taking up the deeper midfield positions.

In the absence of Petrov for the victory over Wigan, Young captained the side and Houllier thinks this boosted his performance:

“He was good. I think he’s proud of being the captain, but when you’re the captain there’s more responsibility. I took him off just because first of all he’s given everything. Ashley is one of the players who covers more ground every game.”

Young’s position just behind Bent therefore seems cemented in Houllier’s plans and it is a role that brings out the best in the player; in his last two outings he has recorded 16 FPL points including a goal, an assist and 3 bonus points. With a current FPL valuation of £8.1 million he is certainly a luxurious asset but after Villa play Manchester United in Gameweek 25, their run of fixtures (FUL, blp, BLA, bol, WOL, eve) are all certainly winnable, especially those at home, and games in which you would expect Young to score highly.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

To play wildcard or not ?

I have Jaask, Evatt Salcido Cleverley Nasri and possibly my front 3 of Bent Torres + Rooney all need changing.

Other option is a 4 point hit Bent -> Odem and Nasri -> Fabregas

    this is going around twitter:

And then he proved he's not a red Torres Torres
I'm off to Stamford Bridge he said Torres Torres
He kissed the badge upon his chest
    Handed in his transfer request
Fernando Torres told us a pack of lies
He plays up front for LFC, Suarez,Suarez
he wants to play for king kenny,Suarez,Suarez
We bought the lad from Amsterdam
    He's part of kennys masterplan
    Luis Suarez Liverpool's number ?
His armband proved he was a red Suarez, Suarez; You'll Never Walk Alone it said Suarez, Suarez; He bought the band from a lad in Spain; Tall and blonde forgotten his name; Luis Suarez Liverpool's number 9!

I love the reaction of most Liverpool fans to this Torres news.... None of them seem to have the brain capacity to understand why Torres would want to leave. They never shut up about how they have 'the best fans in the world' - a self-appointed title - and ignore the fact that they aren't in the Champions League, and won't be again next season.

A player like Fernando Torres is far too good to not be playing in the Champions League, and with Chelsea, City, Utd and Arsenal around, I can't see Liverpool making it back into the Champions League any time soon.

As much as I would love to believe that Chelsea were in a similar position to Liverpool, I'm afraid its only the Liverpool fans that believe so. Chelsea are in the Champions League and only a couple of signings away from rejuvenation. The chances of them slipping out of the top four any time soon is unlikely....

This is taken from the "ThisIsAnfield" Blog:

"Chelsea is not Barcelona playing jaw-dropping football and sitting on top of the tree, after all. They have their own issues at Stamford Bridge. For the spending and supposed dominance at the start of the season, Chelsea sits a mere 9 points above Liverpool in the table. Winning the title looks highly unlikely this season and, with Barcelona around, so does Abramovich’s dream of the Champions’ League."

mmmmmm..........so Liverpool and Chelsea are in the same boat then.......

I personally think Ancelotti will have a problem - a pleasant one - to get the best out of Drogba and Torres at the same time.

Two great players but let's face it, they're not the most versatile ones around.

      My theory.

      Back 5
      Essien Mikel
      Lampard Malouda
      Drogba Torres

But I know sweet FA about Chelsea ask Jamsiep... Thats what I would imagine anyways. Can't see any of them apart from Malouda being dropped... Especially the big matches.

Hopefully Lampard, but agreed on Essien... He's been consistently poor for a few months now, and Mikel hasn't been too much better, which is irritating because he was excellent at the beginning of the season.

I'd hope they weren't thinking of paying 50m for him to sit on the bench.

Got to be a regular starter and near enough 90 mins each game for that money. They aren't Man City after all 🙂 Not sure about goals, I think him and Drogba will score as a partnership just not sure which one will score the bulk.

Although the main transfer guy at SSN has just tweeted this

Aguero - we're told £38.5m (€45m) is release clause in his contract. Tax implications on Aguero mean no deal reached. #ssn

And bids for Negredo and Llorente rejected! 'Arry really does want a striker doesn't he?! Understandably given how poor his current crop are....

It's about time Spurs got relegated and went bankrupt, just like every club Redknapp has ever managed.

I think I'm joining you in a wildcard week, the Nasri injury is the straw that broke the camels back. Can't really wait until GW27 now without spending 8 points.

I'm happy that I've played it, and other than still being stuck with Jara (I'm finding picking a defence with at least 3 players having a respectable fixture every week pretty hard) and pretty happy with my proposed team.

Most of the teams with double weeks have a decent fixture this week, so it allows you to build a team well set for 27, without compromising the side for this week.

If I could have made the Nasri > Fabregas transfer (I was 0.1 short) without any other changes then I'd have been tempted to leave the wildcard it, but avoiding an 8 point hit is probably worth it.

Good team, although I wouldn't want to have two Liverpool defenders after this week (obviously it's fine for this week).

Not convinced by Malouda either, Chelsea's fixtures are pretty poor for the next few.

              No, it's FPL points.

I understand what you're saying, but a lot of people on here get confuzzled between real football and fantasy.

But Malouda vs Nani I cant argue - it's anyone's guess.

This is true, but it will make the premiership stronger, plus Drogba will be 33 next season, Anelka 32, Malouda and Lamps are getting on aswell so im not too worried.
