With the bulk of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Manager’s line-ups exuding a certain familiarity – the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez occupying the forward positions and Gareth Bale, Nani, Rafael Van der Vaart and Samir Nasri all midfield staples – it is this time of the season, with around 14 Gameweeks remaining, that Managers are crying out for a key ‘differential’ to give them the edge over their rivals.

Having understandably been neglected by the FPL masses so far this season, Villa have had a change in fortunes having just recorded their first back-to-back Premier League victories of the season with convincing wins over Manchester City and Wigan. Ashley Young, also the subject of last week’s Technical Area, has played a pivotal role in this. With a current FPL ownership of 4.1% compared to the likes of Van der Vaart (36.9%) and Nani (42.5%), Young could be that key differential.

Gerard Houllier’s recent tactics seems to be paying dividends for the side. The Manchester City victory saw Darren Bent as a lone striker, supported by an attacking midfield three of Gabriel Agbonlahor on the left, Ashley Young in the centre and Albrighton on the right with Stewart Downing dropping back into a deeper central midfield two alongside Stiliyan Petrov. Then, against Wigan, Houllier shifted things around slightly, with Downing moving to the right flank and Nigel Reo-Coker and new signing Jean Makoun taking up the deeper midfield positions.

In the absence of Petrov for the victory over Wigan, Young captained the side and Houllier thinks this boosted his performance:

“He was good. I think he’s proud of being the captain, but when you’re the captain there’s more responsibility. I took him off just because first of all he’s given everything. Ashley is one of the players who covers more ground every game.”

Young’s position just behind Bent therefore seems cemented in Houllier’s plans and it is a role that brings out the best in the player; in his last two outings he has recorded 16 FPL points including a goal, an assist and 3 bonus points. With a current FPL valuation of £8.1 million he is certainly a luxurious asset but after Villa play Manchester United in Gameweek 25, their run of fixtures (FUL, blp, BLA, bol, WOL, eve) are all certainly winnable, especially those at home, and games in which you would expect Young to score highly.

I think it is inevitable that Torres will go now, I just can't see Liverpool keeping a clearly unhappy player when they can get huge money for him. Not sure whether Chelsea will offer £50m though but I'm sure a bid would get accepted of £40-45m tomorrow night!

It looked like Rooney and Tevez were both certain to leave though remember. Only difference is City did the tapping up secretly.

I know but nobody actually bid for them two, it didn't get as advanced as how it has with Torres. Who would want to bid for Rooney anyway tbf? 😉

I have got Nasri but even without him I am in good shape for this gameweek, so no kneejerk transfers, but I do need to know the pros and cons of keeping him on the bench or transferring him out........

    a) I bought him at 7.8 (now 8.5)
    b) I still have my jan wildcard (thinking of using in 26)
    c) how long is he out for?

what are the financial implications of selling or keeping and if falls in value....when would I lose 0.1 for example?

what do you think? keep him on the bench or sell him?....and use the wildcard sooner or later......?

    P.S. I love you.......

Maybe this is old news but:

Huddersfield's Anthony Pilkington says that Cesc Fabregas told his team-mates to 'f*ck off' upon asking to swap shirts.

lol, after the rugby comments he's turning into a proper villain!

I hope Chelsea buy Torres just so we can watch the United fans humiliate themselves by claiming that Chelsea and City are ruining football even though their club has broken the British transfer record more then most.

Chelsea and City ruining football translated = United are skint and its ruined now because they are left trying to buy young players like Arsenal where they used to eat at the top table like City and Chelsea, still there's always Bebe.

Please let them talk about net spend, that's when you know they are flapping lol.

Your ability to turn everything into a conversation about Utd is unrivalled.

That said, I do agree that Utd fans are being incredibly hypocritical when they start talking about clubs 'ruining football' by signing players for a lot of money.

Gonna have 5 players not playing, transfer two out, three on my bench. For the two out I'm getting Cahill and Coleman (if still in favour) to play both GW27 and their double in 28. Then I'll have two transfers to either swap them back out or whatever is good at the time.

No Nasri, No Carroll, possibly no Tevez, possibly no Nelsen

Rumours gathering pace about Liverpool using the potential Torres money to fund moves for Young and Adam. Definitely worth monitoring with those two appearing in a lot of wildcard teams at the moment...

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/30/liverpool-fernando-torres-chelsea?CMP=twt_gu

Although all transfers will have been finalised by tomorrow evening - i.e. before the next deadline, so no one is going to get burnt by someone moving directly before a match or anything like that....

Even if he does then he won't be taking nearly as many set pieces, and Liverpool's fixtures after this week are pretty rubbish.

And no, I genuinely don't think he'll start for Liverpool, well, I don't think he should start for Liverpool, but I guess he might.

        To be honest, no!

Our fixtures are pretty rubbish, in fact they're terrible, and signing Torres isn't going to magically make us start playing brilliantly straight away.

If he looks like playing against Sunderland I'd keep him though, but I wouldn't recommend him for anyone who's wildcarding at the moment.

Toying around with this WC at the moment:

    Foster/Sorensen
    Djouru/Kelly/Coleman/Kolarov/Rafael
    Fabs/VDV/Nani/A. Young/Adam
    RVP/Tevez/Odemwingie

This leaves 1.4 in the bank.

I guess it's like wishing cancer upon someone from Morocco or so? Boularouz has roots there or something.

"Dutch international football player Eljero Elia has apologised for using the phrase 'cancer Moroccan' while playing a football computer game live on internet.

'I wish to apologise to the entire Moroccan community,' Elia said. 'I have many Moroccan friends... I wish I could take back my words but I can't. I also apologise to everyone who collects money for cancer charities, sick people and their families.'"

That Howard Webb mockup that he posted on twitter is the single most effort he gave to the cause in his entire Liverpool career. Must be Rafa's worst signing in terms of price and expectancy. 12 million wasn't it?

I'm considering dumping Tevez and getting Dzeko to free some cash up. Am i mad or is it worth a gamble?

Obviously it could go either way, worth the gamble in my opinion.

I would say mad, but that bloody dog is too brilliant - inspired choice. Ah no, Tevez is still a bonus king and on pens, and quite frankly, a better player.

Reckon we're in for an anti climax tomorrow and none of Liverpool, Chelsea or Spurs will sign anyone else?

I can't see Spurs signing anyone huge but can certainly see Torres leaving. Liverpool are either going to sell him or Torres will commit to the club imo, their can't be an inbetween cos where would that leave things?
