With the bulk of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Manager’s line-ups exuding a certain familiarity – the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez occupying the forward positions and Gareth Bale, Nani, Rafael Van der Vaart and Samir Nasri all midfield staples – it is this time of the season, with around 14 Gameweeks remaining, that Managers are crying out for a key ‘differential’ to give them the edge over their rivals.

Having understandably been neglected by the FPL masses so far this season, Villa have had a change in fortunes having just recorded their first back-to-back Premier League victories of the season with convincing wins over Manchester City and Wigan. Ashley Young, also the subject of last week’s Technical Area, has played a pivotal role in this. With a current FPL ownership of 4.1% compared to the likes of Van der Vaart (36.9%) and Nani (42.5%), Young could be that key differential.

Gerard Houllier’s recent tactics seems to be paying dividends for the side. The Manchester City victory saw Darren Bent as a lone striker, supported by an attacking midfield three of Gabriel Agbonlahor on the left, Ashley Young in the centre and Albrighton on the right with Stewart Downing dropping back into a deeper central midfield two alongside Stiliyan Petrov. Then, against Wigan, Houllier shifted things around slightly, with Downing moving to the right flank and Nigel Reo-Coker and new signing Jean Makoun taking up the deeper midfield positions.

In the absence of Petrov for the victory over Wigan, Young captained the side and Houllier thinks this boosted his performance:

“He was good. I think he’s proud of being the captain, but when you’re the captain there’s more responsibility. I took him off just because first of all he’s given everything. Ashley is one of the players who covers more ground every game.”

Young’s position just behind Bent therefore seems cemented in Houllier’s plans and it is a role that brings out the best in the player; in his last two outings he has recorded 16 FPL points including a goal, an assist and 3 bonus points. With a current FPL valuation of £8.1 million he is certainly a luxurious asset but after Villa play Manchester United in Gameweek 25, their run of fixtures (FUL, blp, BLA, bol, WOL, eve) are all certainly winnable, especially those at home, and games in which you would expect Young to score highly.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

I know he's older and that but if I was a Prem manager I'd be looking at Forlan. Cheaper and better.

Just done my wild card due to too many injuries in my team ie Nasri, Bale, Carroll, Fabianski to name but a few. This is what i come up with please RMT:

    Szczesny, Gordon
    Simpson, Kelly, Coleman, Kolarov, Ivanovic
    Fabregas, Adam, VDV, Nolan, Nani
    Berbatov, Odemwingie, Van Persie

I would drop Adam. If he goes to liverpool he'll lose the influence of Bonus points, which has been pointed out repeatedly here, and if he stays, I think he'll lose form from lack of motivation.

I'd still go with Walcott, however, Arsenal players are injury prone and Dempsey is by far the toughest player in the league who isn't a defender. With Nasri injured, there's going to be more pressure on him.

I think the lower the bench score the better. Not sure though, I thought it measured the total points of your entire team and what percentage of the total was left on your bench.
              Again, not sure though.

Thought that would be the case. Foster was on the bench against Chelsea, Carroll against Arsenal etc.

I actually also benched N'Zog when he scored a brace against Newcastle but luckily Drogba fell ill and didn't play!

Not too bad, sort of middle of the road. You've left points on the bench a few times but get the captaincy right marginally more often than not. Whereas I get it wrong most of the time. So middling, but the good side of middling. 🙂

I know this is my gazillionth RMT sort of thing today, but I ballsed up the last wildcard so horrendously I really want to get this one spot on. I've gone for two rotating doubling pairs at the back - Sunderland and Everton. Bit risky but I quite like the thought.

    Howard, Gordon

    Coleman, Bardsley, Rafael, Kelly, Simpson

    Adam, Fabregas, VDV, Nani, Young

I like the team but would downgrade Howard for a cheaper keeper and upgrade Bardsley to a Huth. In other words dont like your doubled up defence!

I like the idea of doubling ip if your chasing and need to take a bit of a risk. If your keeping a lead then yes, unnecessary.

Then go for it. You know people on this site will just give you the 'sensible' answer, the same people who vote on the captains poll. Unpredictable season calls for a bit of unpredictability (is that even a word?).

With you on both counts. I'm thinking Nasri>Miereles what with one price dropping & the other rising (or is price protection on Miereles kosher?)
Don't wanna wildcard unless there's no option but bothered about Torres (if he signs will he play for Chelski on Tues?) and Adam.

Only for violent conduct or serious foul play. A professional foul, like Dawson's today, only results in a 1 match ban, unless the player in question has already served a ban this season, and Dawson hasn't.

Hi guys, now Nasri is injured is it worth taking hit to replace him? It's that or I have to play MGP who's up against tottenham at home. Would have 8.5 to spend. I'm going to wildcard gw27 so it would only be a short term change

first part is based on how many points your captain got vs the possible points u could have got if u picked the correct captain every week...
Second part is how many points were left on your bench this season.... And what percentage of your total points that was...

^ mine. Surprised at the captain's %, thought it would be lower, but I guess captaining Drogba for the first 5 weeks carries that statistic somewhat.

What's the issue with Djourou? Vermaelen isn't close to returning and Squillaci is doing a very good job of securing Djourou's place for him...

It's an OK move because Squillaci is shite (and banned for 1 game), Vermaelen is injured, and Djourou's only 4.3m, which is bench fodder price, so if he doesn't play it's not too important.

The main argument against it is that you can't have 3 attacking Arsenal players.

That's really the only argument, and with rotation around the CL I think using 3 attacking slots on Arsenal is too much.

I see what you mean, but you could argue that having 3 Arsenal attackers protects you from rotation - if RVP is rested, you'd still have Fabs and Walcott, for example.
