The calm before the storm? Right now we’re still waiting for the £50 million Fernando Torres bomb to go off, while the fuse looks to be burning away nicely on Andy Carroll’s proposed transfer to Anfield as his £35 million replacement. Incredible stuff if it comes off.

Right now we have to be content with just a couple of moves, the most significant of which appears to be Blackpool’s signing of Andy Reid from Sunderland. Yesterday it was reported that Ian Holloway had targeted the impish Irishman as a possible replacement for Charlie Adam who is of course coveted by Liverpool.

Could Dalglish swoop for the Blackpool playmaker to help ease the loss of Torres? It’s just one of many unanswered questions right now on what is proving to be a deadline day full of big speculation, although typically, nothing much has happened just yet.

Keep yourself locked to the tweets for the latest confirmed moves as they happen.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's a good question. If you believe what the papers tell you then he seemed to have good things to say after the game and he could see him as a replacement for Scholes.

Then again, it was the mail if I recall right.

Guys I was just reading back couple pages on the last post and I'm surprised at the reaction to the Carroll fee. 35 mill is in line with the market they are working in, that being the extremely inflated market for English players that have excelled at the highest level. Rafa and Wenger said for years that to buy top English players you have to pay 3 times what they are worth, it's nothing new. GJ-18m, bent-24m, carrick-17m, ferdinand-30m, hargreaves-20m etc etc. Players just as good are available much cheaper from around the world but with these 25 man squads and the homegrown rules it's either pay top dollar for top english players or buy talented youngsters from championship and have them take up spots in your squad when they aren't good enough to compete.
Carroll is 22, shown himself already to be one of the most effective strikers in the league and will likely be leading the line for England for a good part of a decade. As a footballer is he worth 35m? no. Does the fee make perfect sense in this inflated market? yes.

      Those transfers you mentioned
      GJ-18m, bent-24m, carrick-17m, ferdinand-30m, hargreaves-20m

Hardly the best bits of business, but I fully agree its the English-tax. Daft really.

Indeed, got a good few years out of him.

I think Hargreaves could have been good business had he stayed fit, he started to look very good. Although 20m was maybe slightly excessive even with his form before injury.

Carrick was a rip off, Bent I originally though was very expensive but at least he will score goals. GJ - lol.

all those players were proven performers for a number of years. that's my issue with the carroll price tag. 5 months in the premiership isn't enough to say "this guy is brilliant" imo

I disagree with this too, it's not like he's just in a good run of form and at other times has struggled. Yes it's only half a season but from word go he's shown he's got the game to give premiership defences hell. Match after match too, and at 22 he'll only improve. IMO consistent, top shelf performances for 20 odd games in the prem as a 22 year old is certainly enough to go off to suggest he'll maintain a high level. On top of that he's improving constantly and obviously. Not a risk imo, not worth 35m in any normal market though. SAF got a top class striker same age, different but similar levels of talent and potential for about 7m? cos he's from mehico

You can't really judge a price these days on the player involved.

Liverpool are paying over the odds for someone because they will probably need a striker when Torres goes and he's english.

Theres too many factors that come into play when deciding a price.

pffffttt. He's a feckin sook. When rafa brought him over and helped him become one of the top strikers in the world he claimed that he was a lifelong LFC fan, even had the tat to prove it.
Then when the club hit dark times thanks to those miserable yanks FT starts acting like a petulant child and wants to jump ship instead helping the club he "loves" to get back to the top. Good riddens i say, we got some brilliant memories and he got elevated to world class status and now we've got 30 mil profit.

Yes they made Rafa bid for barry, force alonso, sell arbeloa and bid 18mill for Johnson, Then sign 25 reserve players for 1-2 mil who never made the first team

Seriously you really believe this ? wow.

And yes Torres is ambitous, he came to you guys cos you were on an upward curb and now things have changed.

Couple of quotes from the F365 ticker:

16.19 Up4thejamboree wrote: 'Having checked out the ever-reliable Wikipedia (and then added in Kaka, who is mysteriously absent), it seems Carroll would actually be the seventh most expensive transfer ever... just edging out David Villa. C.Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Kaka, Zidane, Figo, Crespo, Andy Carroll, Villa, Buffon, Robinho'.

16.15 Did you know?: Andy Carroll has scored a total of 34 goals in his professional career (32 in the league, two in the FA Cup). And were Liverpool to sign him for £34m later today along with Suarez, they would break their transfer record twice on the same day.

Why would United buy Adam? Why would Fergie say Charlie Adam’s corners are worth £10million alone? If he wanted him surely he wouldn’t have said a word and then paid £8million.

M’thinks he and Holloway conjured up a plan to make Liverpool spend more. Hypothetical? Yes. Conspiracy theory? Possibly. Cunning? Definitely.

have nani, berbs and raf along with adam but im on WC, should i just replace adam now, if he goes i got 4 united plus hes no longer the BP darling or on all the set pieces and he'll be rotated. I dont know these for a fact but thats the common percerption isnt it? Time to dump adam? Or would it be cheeky to dump nani now. Id rather root for adams blue-collar approach than watch nani go to ground because of a stiff breeze.

adam stay or go on your team?

btw, still dont know how i bought him at 5.5, he currently costs 5.7, but my sell price is still 5.5, not 5.6, if anyone knows what the deal is or how to find out, I will thank you very much.

if he goes to united, and plays, hell still be flinging passes all over the place, and argualby to better finishers and he'll see even more ball than he already does.

the juries out on that one i think, all down to rotation

        2 Jan 09:40 Nasri (8.1) Adam (5.4) 22

You bought him at 5.4, and he's currently 5.7, so for you he'll be sold at 5.5. If he rises to 5.8 then you can sell him for 5.6.

If Adam goes i think his value will shoot up over the next couple of weeks. Not saying i think people should get him in, but i reckon they will.

      Sell, sell, sell.

He'd be a useful squad player at Utd, that's about it I would have thought.

Fuzzy just looked at your Ttansfer History you bought him at 5.4 so the sell price is 5.5 unless he goes up to 5.8 then it would be 5.6

More chance of him playing regularly at Liverpool than united. If he goes to Liverpool I might keep him, if united will sell immediately

Rate mt current wild card team

    Begovic, Robinson
    Kolorov, Kelly, Djourou, Walker, Coleman
    Nani, VDV, Adam, Walcott, Toure*
    Tevez, RVP, Berba

*Toure will be swapped for Cahill upon his return.

My main issue is whether Walker is a good option or not, and are there any defensive changes I can make, bearing in mind I have very limited funds.

    Thanks!

Many of us already have three United players. If Adam goes to Utd, then how does that work for us? Does he just disappear from our teams?

The next transfer you make has to be getting rid of a united player.
