Roman Abramovich proved that he isn’t growing tired of life at Stamford Bridge in emphatic fashion by bolstering the reigning champions’ squad with two new faces on Mondayβ€˜s Transfer Deadline Day, splashing out over Β£70 million in the process. We are all familiar with the more expensive of these signings, Fernando Torres, but the other recruit, David Luiz, is far from a household name on these shores and his arrival has been somewhat understated in comparison.

The Brazilian defender joined from Benfica in a deal reported to be worth Β£21.4 million and has been awarded the number four shirt. Manager Carlo Ancelotti commented on his new arrival:

β€œHe has fantastic quality as a defender so he won’t have a problem because he has experience in the Champions League this season. ”

The Statistics

After some meagre years at Esporte Clube VitΓ³ria in Brazil making 26 appearances for the club, where he played in both attacking and defensive midfield positions which proved less than successful, Luiz was switched to central defence where he caught the eye of Portuguese side Benfica.

He moved to Benfica initially on loan, but impressed enough to gain a permanent deal in 2007, signing a five year contract. His first couple of seasons were blighted with injury and form as well as Benfica manager Quique Flores’s insistence on playing him at left-back, instead of his favoured central position.

It was the 2009/10 season where things really took off for Luiz; stationed in the heart of the back four, he formed a great understanding with fellow Brazilian Luisao. During the season Luiz racked-up 29 appearances, scoring 2 goals. Luiz’s form helped Benfica claim their first Portuguese League trophy in five years as well as winning the League Cup. Such was his form, the player picked-up the Portuguese League Footballer of the Year Award and became a fan’s favourite, earning the nickname the β€˜Sheriff’, as well as the establishment of his own Lisbon fan club. In total Luiz made 82 appearances for Benfica in theΒ Portuguese League and scored 4 goals.

The Prospects

Currently sitting in fourth place (10 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United) Chelsea are certainly in need of a boost. Title rivals Wayne Rooney and Arsene Wenger both expect the two new signings to do just that and haven’t written off Chelsea’s chances of regaining the Premier League crown. Rooney is fully aware of the ability of Ancelotti’s side:

β€œThey are a big, strong side and we know if anyone is capable of going on a run it is them.”

Despite the fact the club have won their last three Premier League games, they showed their defensive frailties once again against Sunderland by shipping 2 goals and the jury is still out on the current form of John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic. Luiz looks set to take his place in the centre of Chelsea’s defence immediately, forming a partnership with Terry, with Branislav Ivanovic left battling it out with Jose Bosingwa for a place at right-back.

As mentioned previously, although primarily a central defender Luiz has the ability to play across the back four and in midfield. Indeed, just today, Luiz has expressed not only his desire to start his Chelsea career but also made it clear that he is prepared to play in a number of roles.

“I hope I can play quickly, and I feel 100 percent to play tomorrow if I need to, there is no problem with my fitness…I want to help the team in whichever way Mr Ancelotti wants me to do, wherever in the team, as long as I am on the field I am happy. I am most comfortable in the centre but can play on the side also.”

Luiz is extremely unlikely to oust Ashley Cole from left-back or one of the more established midfielders, but if necessary the versatile Luiz can fill-in where needed and Ancelotti clearly admires this quality:

β€œHe can play from the back with top quality because he is also a midfielder plus in all the positions of the back four.”

Significantly, as we pointed out on his arrival at Chelsea, Luiz is not eligible for Chelsea’s Champions League ties. That would make him far more likely to earn starts before and after European ties, making it all the more likely that he’ll get opportunities to cement his role in the starting XI.

With uncertainty surrounding the team’s forthcoming fixtures, our earlier article explains the complicated situation and postponement, now might not be the best time to bring in any Chelsea players. But priced at a very reasonable 6.0 in the FPL game, Luiz could be a good prospect in the coming weeks and looking forward to Gameweek 28 and the following fixtures (blp, MCY, stk, WIG, wba, WHM), apart from a testing home clash with Manchester City, you wouldnβ€˜t expect the side to concede too many goals in what looks to be a critical run of games.

he's not been too bad. the team as a whole has done poorer after losing a lot of key players this season, which always makes it tougher for the team to perform. So he's not done as well as last year, but that's also due to the team being worse and not having momentum.

      Yep.

Its just the goalkeeping combo and 4th and 5th defender I keep mulling over. (The 3 core defenders I want are Huth, Vidic and Coleman)

One minute I'm going with Foster and Begovic with Simpson & Walker.

Then I change my mind and think Szczesny and Begovic with R Johnson and Simpson.

Then its Foster and Harper with Kelly and Walker.

Then its Szczesny and Harper with Dann and Walker.

Or Foster & Gordon with Walker and Simpson.

Mids and Forward line not really a problem though.

Well, we'll have a week to mess about with it is the way I'm looking at it.

Plus the midweek Internationals may clear things up a bit for us too as someone we're potentially interested in may well get injured.

I really like the Szczeny/Begovic combination with Roger Johnson and Danny Simpson, as that gives me 10 DGW players that I'd be happy to keep in my team long term.

Only thing that slightly concerns me is that both keepers are potential rotation risks, whereas Foster, Harper and Gordon are all nailed on.

Of course, the chances of Szczesny losing his place to Almunia are infinitesimally small. And having disposed Sorensen early on this season Begovic has done nothing to warrant being dropped now.

But, you know what self induced paranoia is like!

      i think it'll be this -

      back 5

      Mikel
      Essien Fat Frank
      Anelka Drogs Torres

Torres slightly out left... Maybe Malouda instead of Mikel/Essien if they wanted to be really attackinh

Ya i think as below Torres will be central.
And if both Anelka and Drogba play Anelka will def be wide and Drogba will either be partnered with Torres or maybe more creator, or benched.

Time will tell. I cant see anelka/ Kalou not play right side or from central coming to right side

At Liverpool he drifted out left quite a lot. Henry played in that "position" too but that was out of choice!

DBR's suggestion of 4-3-3 with anelka behind Drogba and Torres is plausible too but would mean the end of Frank as an effective fantasy football choice....

What about 442 with Essien on one of the flanks?

          Essien - Frank - Mikel - Malouda
          Drogba - Torres

      Hey nice write up Si
You do it for fun or are you a journo?

Personally I think Anelka could play at the tip of the diamond, Drift to each wing as it see fits to create some 2 v 1, 3 ,v 2 on the wings with ramires & Ivano (right) or cole and malouda (left)

I can see this being used with Essien, Mal, Lampard behind. Or ramires, mikel when needs be. I guess it depends on the formation

I think it will mean more rotation for the likes of mikel/ malouda/ ramires and essien in midfield and in my opinion Drogba.

You could easily see the 4 3 3 rolled out with Torres at the top on his own and Drogba benched. He isnt the same anymore and many are speculating he will go in summer with Torres the natural sucessor.

Then theres also as you said last seasons early formation with torres and another uptop.

For me maybe not in fpl terms but in the system for 2/3 options Anelka is pretty much crucial. Unless he goes Drogba and torres but for me this is the least likely

No he he is an excellent creator for them and his movement is crucial.

He has added so much to his game. Imagine how much less effective he would be if he stayed right side all day. would be alot easier for the left back.

But because he roams he creates space and for Chelsea crucially he is prob now there best creator aswell.

Top player but not a striker like he was a decade ago

he's not good enough to play that role imo. top striekr and finisher but just gets in the way when he drops deep, which he has does way too much in the last year. also think they should play a better passer and thinker in that role. anelka belongs ont he shoulder of the last defender imo

But he hasnt got the pace to be on the last shoulder anymore.
His movement is crucial to chelsea.By dropping deep he creates space for movement from lampard and the fullbacks and drogba and malouda to run it.

He comes short lays it off to midfielder, drogba runs into hole/space, lampard finds him in this new space, chance.

So many times this has happened.

i agree on your movement point, but i think that's only half the equation in that position. imo he needs the nouse and vision to then do things on the ball.
p.s anelka is still absolute lightning. it's just no always so obvious as he has a jack dee-esque facial expression when he sprints, as opposed to the carlos tevez i may just sh*t myself at any moment i'm straining so hard look

It all started when he was fresh on the scene. I think it was just down to not being confident in front of the cameras and the millions of people watching which I think is fair enough. If he's shy then his personality isn't going to come through.

More recently he tends to laugh, smile and make jokes. Sure he's still a bit shy and his humour is dry like you say but I think hes actually alright.

I can completely understand an Englishman taking offence at that but that's the way it is up here. It's a rivalry, although I know the English get more of a kick out of turning over the Germans, French etc cos they actually have a half decent team.

When asked for country, it's country of residence. So perhaps he lives in England.

            Maybe it isn't him. BUT.

When you choose your country it asks for country of residence not birth (I have no idea where he lives though).

He follows FFS on twitter and lots of players in his teams you would associate with someone who follows this site.

He's in a league with a bunch of other people associated with British tennis. Massive coincidence?

He is in a league with his brother who is in a league with laura robson whos team name matches what she tweeted on twitter so I reckon it's him.

If it isn't then oh well, not like I'll know any better πŸ™‚

To be fair an awful lot of lads (practically all of them) who are English in my league have little Irish tricolours as it goes off country of residence, and presumably they couldn't be tossed to fix it.

    I am stuffed for GW28.

Currently have 9/15 players that are potentially not playing (Tot,Che,ManU,Ars,Bir). No wildcards and only 3 free transfers between now and GW28.

    do I...
    a) max out the GW27 and get 9/10 DGW players and then accept a crapsky GW28 (and keep a good team) or..
    b) use my 3 frees + take 4pt hits to get a balanced GW27 and GW28 (but be left with a weaker team)

Obviously last week you have 156/271. one gameweek doesn't make much of a difference unless they scored double figures.

Vidic is the one player causing me most problems with my WC, don't know whether to get rid and have a stronger midfield (Young/Cahill instead of 6.8 mid) or keep hold of the highest scoring defender...mmmmm

Think i might just go with Rafael instead but he just wont be as nailed on as vidic..

The simple question is Vidic + Makeweight v's Rafael + Cahill/Young.....My thinking would be the latter.....would assume Cahill/Young combo will outscore Vidic based on run of games and unless you get real lucky with the makeweight I'd say Raf will outscore him. I reckon SAF will rotate Raf/O'Shea a bit but think O'Shea will play CL games and Raf more PL...

          ....All imho

i had been planning to take vidic out for rafael too, i just think he's the only guaranteed united defender now so i really have major doubts about doing it now. rafael seems more at risk than before his red card.

I'd like to keep Vidic but he just damages my midfield a bit, i feel by taking him out i might be actually weakening my team with the WC!

hello, i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on my team. my current team:
    foster(al habsi)
    coleman, djourou, rafa (kelly, luiz)
    adam, vdv, nani, fab (brunt)
    berba, rvp, tevez

now i was thinking after gw 27, to transfer out fabregas to free up some funds so i could go fab -> cahill and brunt ->a young. so if you were in this situation, would you keep this team, or change fab to cahill and a young.

Keep....if you really wanna free up cash I'd get rid of Berbatrough.....think he'll go on a quiet one for a bit....I know this coz I sol Rooney for him last week, after praising the virtues of Rooney to anyone who'd listen.....

Every team I see for GW 27 scares me in a Final Destination kind of way. I keep seeing ways they will get decimated for GW 28. A rest here, a knock there, a draw with Everton here, a red card there...
