Roman Abramovich proved that he isn’t growing tired of life at Stamford Bridge in emphatic fashion by bolstering the reigning champions’ squad with two new faces on Monday‘s Transfer Deadline Day, splashing out over £70 million in the process. We are all familiar with the more expensive of these signings, Fernando Torres, but the other recruit, David Luiz, is far from a household name on these shores and his arrival has been somewhat understated in comparison.

The Brazilian defender joined from Benfica in a deal reported to be worth £21.4 million and has been awarded the number four shirt. Manager Carlo Ancelotti commented on his new arrival:

“He has fantastic quality as a defender so he won’t have a problem because he has experience in the Champions League this season. ”

The Statistics

After some meagre years at Esporte Clube Vitória in Brazil making 26 appearances for the club, where he played in both attacking and defensive midfield positions which proved less than successful, Luiz was switched to central defence where he caught the eye of Portuguese side Benfica.

He moved to Benfica initially on loan, but impressed enough to gain a permanent deal in 2007, signing a five year contract. His first couple of seasons were blighted with injury and form as well as Benfica manager Quique Flores’s insistence on playing him at left-back, instead of his favoured central position.

It was the 2009/10 season where things really took off for Luiz; stationed in the heart of the back four, he formed a great understanding with fellow Brazilian Luisao. During the season Luiz racked-up 29 appearances, scoring 2 goals. Luiz’s form helped Benfica claim their first Portuguese League trophy in five years as well as winning the League Cup. Such was his form, the player picked-up the Portuguese League Footballer of the Year Award and became a fan’s favourite, earning the nickname the ‘Sheriff’, as well as the establishment of his own Lisbon fan club. In total Luiz made 82 appearances for Benfica in the Portuguese League and scored 4 goals.

The Prospects

Currently sitting in fourth place (10 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United) Chelsea are certainly in need of a boost. Title rivals Wayne Rooney and Arsene Wenger both expect the two new signings to do just that and haven’t written off Chelsea’s chances of regaining the Premier League crown. Rooney is fully aware of the ability of Ancelotti’s side:

“They are a big, strong side and we know if anyone is capable of going on a run it is them.”

Despite the fact the club have won their last three Premier League games, they showed their defensive frailties once again against Sunderland by shipping 2 goals and the jury is still out on the current form of John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic. Luiz looks set to take his place in the centre of Chelsea’s defence immediately, forming a partnership with Terry, with Branislav Ivanovic left battling it out with Jose Bosingwa for a place at right-back.

As mentioned previously, although primarily a central defender Luiz has the ability to play across the back four and in midfield. Indeed, just today, Luiz has expressed not only his desire to start his Chelsea career but also made it clear that he is prepared to play in a number of roles.

“I hope I can play quickly, and I feel 100 percent to play tomorrow if I need to, there is no problem with my fitness…I want to help the team in whichever way Mr Ancelotti wants me to do, wherever in the team, as long as I am on the field I am happy. I am most comfortable in the centre but can play on the side also.”

Luiz is extremely unlikely to oust Ashley Cole from left-back or one of the more established midfielders, but if necessary the versatile Luiz can fill-in where needed and Ancelotti clearly admires this quality:

“He can play from the back with top quality because he is also a midfielder plus in all the positions of the back four.”

Significantly, as we pointed out on his arrival at Chelsea, Luiz is not eligible for Chelsea’s Champions League ties. That would make him far more likely to earn starts before and after European ties, making it all the more likely that he’ll get opportunities to cement his role in the starting XI.

With uncertainty surrounding the team’s forthcoming fixtures, our earlier article explains the complicated situation and postponement, now might not be the best time to bring in any Chelsea players. But priced at a very reasonable 6.0 in the FPL game, Luiz could be a good prospect in the coming weeks and looking forward to Gameweek 28 and the following fixtures (blp, MCY, stk, WIG, wba, WHM), apart from a testing home clash with Manchester City, you wouldn‘t expect the side to concede too many goals in what looks to be a critical run of games.

Would post this above in the 'Murray' section, but it might not be seen. It is definitely him; can't stress it enough. A quick look at the other players (and leagues they are in) corroborates it. All of the leagues are full of tennis players. Well, British juniors at least. Caroline Wozniacki (current women's #1) is also on it..

Brunt should be eased out the door in a few weeks, especially if he picks up a couple more yellows as he's 3 away from a 2 match suspension for reaching 10. So yes Get Cahill and Young. I might even sneak Young in this week for Walcott myself if he's a doubt.

By then you'll see better how things go with Barcelona and in the cup, he could convince you to keep him but I think RVP gets enough coverage.

I'm saying Cahill for those few weeks at least. Depends on your budget if you can get him in and keep Fab.

i want to get rid of berba, but that wouldn't free up enough funds to go brunt -> cahill. and i don't want to trade adam, or nani. maybe i can trade vdv but that's a big maybe.

If Nasri hadn't gotten injured it would be even more of a headache for me. It let me cut him loose quickly though and take the value loss (really it's a 0.4 profit from buying him not a loss). It's not as scary as I thought it would be not having him inthe team.

I don't hope for injuries but just clear signs in the next GW to guide me 🙂

here are some issues. because i'm switching three players (and want to take 0 hits), i would have to spread them out accordingly. second, i feel bad for letting vdv go. he's been so clutch for me so letting him go just feels wrong.

Used it last week and got off to a decent start (69 points), reasonably well kitted out for the next couple of weeks too barring any injuries etc.
Decided to double on Everton's defence and temporarily on Liverpool's too. Other than that it's pretty balanced.

Guys, I'm wildcarding in GW27 so basically got a free transfer this week, since I can't carry them forward once I wildcard (grr!).

    Current team:

    Kingson
    Hangeland, Kolarov, Vidic
Adam, Fabregas, Nani (c), Van der Vaart, N'Zogbia
    Berbatov, Tevez

Subs: Carson (lol), Konchesky (equally lol), Foley (even more lol), Odemwingie (indeed)

Obviously not too bothered with bench as they're all being replaced with wildcard so just looking for best move to make this weekend.

    I have £0.5m in bank.

Thinking that replacing Kingson with Szczesny or Begovic is probably best move, but open to suggestions.

    Ideas welcome.

Team looks fine for this week.

Kingson doesn't have a prayer, so maybe one of the above keepers would be a good move.

Alternatively you could take a punt on Coleman for Hangeland for potential attacking points.

I was thinking of Coleman for Konch but, as you rightly assessed, I think Kingson is screwed big time this weekend.

Fulham v Villa could be nil nil, plus my league leader (5 pts diff) and Cup opponent both have Hangs so I may as well play him as they both will. Neither of them have Coleman.

But yeah, Kingson cleanie looks as likely as Iain Dowie landing a job as the next Diet Coke man.

Similar team and predicament to me, Nomar - I'd be more tempted to get an Arsenal def against a rather toothless toon. Kingson'll get save points, and Everton aren't firing on all cylinders (probablyuntil Cahill gets back!)

I did the sideways move of Berb to Rooney (I seem to remember last season he scored in runs of games, and he;s a good diff)

Anyway, good luck - it'll be interesting to see how it goes...

Hard to say, both have similar-ish fixtures (easy, difficult, easy) between 26-28. Berba's potential dgw another factor. I guess it comes down to how confident you would be in captaining Berbatov this week because if you don't then Tevez at home to West Brom is an obvious choice.

Same. When i wildcard in 27 Berbatov not going to be in my team anymore , dont need him for 27 .
In 28 they have wigan but with champions league back he might not even play. Then they have chelsea which isnt ideal.

Plenty of alternatives for the run in. Bent looks appealing as he likely to start every match , even the new liverpool striker could be worth it

Ok, my 1st RMWCT, quite mainstream, lots of Pen takers, what do you reckon?

    Foster Begovic
    Kolarov Coleman Djourou Kelly Walker
    Nani VDV Adam AYoung Fabs
    Odem Tevez RVP

Got 1.8m in bank, not sure how to spend it? May keep it in case Walker(gamble)/Djourou/Kelly lose their place, unless there's a better way to spend it?

Very similar to my team so I don't see anything bad about it!, except I don't rate Kolorov. I have 3 ars and VDV. Walcott will go for Cahill or Young for GW28

Very mainstream, classic-- but I would improve one Defender (keep Coleman/Djourou) with the extra cash. Maybe a Def with both a double GW27 and a game in GW28. Stoke or New.

You're reading my mind- Dempsey/Hughes out for a MF and probably Huth with my two free on Sat post deadline. Brought in Odem this week. (I do have a feeling this DGW is going to fizzle.)

I still have my original WC and used the free one in GW23 with great luck. Trying to figure out when to use it-- maybe in GW 28 to get ready for GW29. Then I'd have to bail out of two BIR and at least one EVE player and shift to CHE, if they have a DGW still.

    Thoughts on WC team?

    Foster, Begovic
Vidic, Coleman, jara, Kolarov, R. Johnson
    Nani, VDV, Walcott, Adam, Young
    Tevez, Odemwingie, RVP

Plan on getting rid of Jara after his DGW for Kelly/Clark.

How certain is Begovic of his starting spot? Sorenson is back now right? Also, should i downgrade Vidic? Cheers for any opinions.

Don't think he's value for money personally and he doesn't have all that many BPs. There are LOADS of defenders that will rack up more BPs although it's tough to argue with his attacking threat.

To a degree I think it's wise to spread the risk a bit. Berbatov isn't consistent. That's the problem with him, you have to have patience.

Think Begovic is fine, I wouldn't have Jara at all, even one CS is doubtful.
As for Vidic, fixtures aren't amazing, I'm not relying on cs at all, could shift and change Walcott to Cahill or a young.

If you can afford to keep Vidic then I'd keep him. That's what I'm planning to do with my WC.

I don't like Jara, DGW or not. If you're getting rid of him after the DGW then it's a waste of a transfer in and out in my opinion.

Just get a single gameweek player who'll potentially get ye more points, like Walker or Kelly or even Simpson, whose likely to get more DGW pts than Jara..

Ok so it seems Jara should go, perhaps its for the best, have hoped for a clean sheet too many times from him and he has failed to deliver but those 2 games look good and you would think he will get at least 4..

Jara picked up a knock during the week so watch for updates. Begovic is still first choice in Premier League games.

Personally I am keeping Vidic until the end of the season. Yes you can downgrade to improve midfield or attack but there are a lot of cheaper options in those areas with similar or better points returns to the big expensive players whereas Vidic is 20 points ahead of everyone else in defence, bar Ashley Cole.

Ok so jara will be gone and Vidic may stay just to have some more Utd coverage, can always downgrade i suppose.

Worried also by the lack of Chelsea cover?

Yep. Rooney, RVP, Suarez here. Could do straight swap from Rooney to Tevez but that seems a bit silly given Roon's performance on Tuesday so it's either a hit to get Carlito in for Suarez or just sit tight and pray Tevez doesn't go ape sh*t and rack up 15+ points

If i could afford the straight swap i'd definitely think about the same move but seeing as i'd have to take a hit it makes more sense for me to shift Suarez i think.

It's really just a symptom of my dumb ass transfers from last week. Brought Fabregas and Suarez in for Nasri and Tevez and may well end up shipping out Fabregas and Suarez this week for a hit. Like i said ... dumb ass

      For the umpteenth time.

You will only have 1 transfer the following week. Which is why there is no point saving a transfer the week before you wildcard as you can't carry it forward as an extra transfer the following week.

    Begovic . Kingson
    Kelly . Murphy . Djourou . Coleman . Simpson
    Nani . Adam . Fabregas . VDV . Dempsey
Tevez . van Persie . Berbatov

    Should I do:
    Murphy -> Luiz
    Simpson -> Walker
    Fabregas -> Cahill
    Dempsey -> A Young

I don't really want to sell Fabregas but he frees a lot of cash.

Wow great team. I am a first year player, but here goes: It's unbalanced, but for a good reason-- Carroll is out- so just wait for his return to boost one Defender-- Luis is the one to keep an eye on and I guess Walker in the meantime as a cheap replacement if one of your Def gets hurt. (I wrote that sentence before I saw the high value of your team.)

You are getting ready for WC-- I just would keep Vidic-- if one of your proposed Def is hurt or one loses his position- you might regret losing Vidic and paying up to regain his consistency and bonus points. Rafael and his concussion are a risk-- I think concussion research has limited many players now much more than just five years ago... at least that's my take from American football in the States.
