There was no love lost between the West London rivals as Craven Cottage played host to a most un-romantic evening of football.

The 0-0 stalemate surely handed Chelsea’s title dream a Dear John letter, as Carlo Ancelotti’s side, lining up with an unconvincing Fernando Torres in attack and Didier Drogba warming the bench, huffed and puffed but failed to blow down a determined Fulham. In the end Chelsea had Petr Cech’s to thank for salvaging a point with late spot-kick save from a Clint Dempsey 12-yard effort…

Carlo Ancelotti opted for what appeared to be a 4-3-2-1 formation, with Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka operating either side and tucked behind Fernando Torres at the spearhead. Didier Drogba was relegated to the bench then, while in midfield Ancelotti recalled Ramires with Mikel dropping out and Michael Essien given the job of protecting the back four. That defence saw a full debut for David Luiz who slotted in alongside John Terry; Branislav Ivanovic switched to right-back with Jose Bosingwa sidelined through injury.

The changes reflected the turbulence within the Chelsea squad. Ancelotti’s recent claims that the arrival of Luiz and Torres offered increased rotation options was confirmed by his decision to “rest” Drogba and shift Ivanovic back to full-back on the right – a position he made his own last season. Ancelotti was quick to justify his team selection in his post-match comments.

“I wanted to have control of the game in midfield by using Malouda and Anelka between the lines, and it was normal rotation because we have a lot of games coming and we want to maintain the players fresh. Drogba was a case of normal rotation as happened to Mikel and Kalou, and these players will play the next game.”

The situation up front is of particular interest – clearly, away from home playing both Drogba and Torres with Anelka or Malouda will be an issue. Monday’s team selection seems to suggest that Ancelotti will choose between Torres and Drogba away from home, but did suggest that this is subject to change…

“Maybe in the next game we will use both. I don’t know if Didier was happy, but every player knows every game is important. It doesn’t matter.”

Torres endured another miserable night in blue. Replaced by Drogba on 70 minutes, Ancelotti was again forced to defend the £50 million striker.

“Fernando played well. He needs time to play with us and, after one week, he was better. He used his ability to move. I substituted him just to use Didier’s freshness and power.”

We’re not quite sure that the “ability to move” is enough of a demonstration of his talent right now – Torres is looking low on confidence and seems very unlikely to tempt even a second glance from Fantasy Managers right now.

Elsewhere in the Chelsea squad we look to be limited when it comes to “untouchables” – Ancelotti has stated that John Terry is under threat, leaving just Petr Cech, Ashley Cole and perhaps Frank Lampard as those names set to be ever-present on the Chelsea teamsheet until the end of the season.

David Luiz could yet be an option at 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game. He enjoyed a strong debut, staying firm at the back alongside Terry and then at right-back later in the game. His evening was turned upside down by the late challenge on Dempsey that conceded the penalty, but Cech came to his rescue there and Luiz’s contribution, particularly in terms of his distribution of the ball, stood out.

Chelsea will of course face a blank fixture in Gameweek 28 should they get past Everton in their fourth round FA Cup replay this weekend. The midweek clash with Man United at Stamford Bridge will be postponed to make way for their fifth round tie – that prospect will temper any interest in their squad, regardless of rest and rotation issues.

In the Fulham camp, Mark Hughes made just one change to his lineup – drafting in Calos Salcido in the troublesome left-back area with John Pantsil dropping out of favour once again. Steven Sidwell enjoyed another encouraging game in central midfield, while Damien Duff was an influence on the flank. The Fulham back four also continue to win plaudits. This was a fifth clean sheet in the last 9 for Hughes’ side – they’ve conceded just 5 goals in that run. With favourable home fixtures to come against Blackburn, Blackpool and Bolton, their defensive assets are likely to earn some attention in the next week or so.

Clint Dempsey again lined up on the left of midfield but shifted up front late on with the introduction of Simon Davies. Dempsey’s miss from the spot-kick will have come as a blow to his Fantasy owners of course. He only assumed those duties because Danny Murphy was off the field at the time. The miss is unlikely to see the American regain the responsibility any time soon.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

O'shea is actually playing well, I'm shocked to be honest!

I think Rafael will probably play against Wigan and O'Shea in CL, O'Shea is a good man to have in CL games, a dirty bully who rarely gets noticed for the amount of little fouls he commits, ESPECIALLY on corners.

Hope not. O'Shea might play in the more difficult games, he is the more defensive full-back, and he also gives extra height at the back, so might be expected to play against Stoke, for example.

He hasn't lost his place necessarily, it just appears that he is no longer nailed on to start. I imagine O'Shea will play the tougher games and Rafael the easier.
Looks like the nailed on defenders for Man Utd have shrunk back to Vidic or Evra.

Which keeper combo do you prefer for the rest of the season?

Foster & Friedel - All homes games (easy on paper)

    OR

    Foster & Begovic - (All home games, except 32 & 34)

I already have Huth, so a wit weary of doubling up... but not sure I can trust Villa... would much rather get Walker... also have shit loads in the bank so not bothered about the extra cash for Friedel...

I would rather only make GK changes on wildcard if possible - I got stuck with Krul for weeks when he was benched.

Problem is that if you take a hit for a keeper, the best you're likely to do is break even if they get a clean sheet.

I was looking at that yesterday. Foster & Friedel (10.7) have the best combo for the rest of the season, then probably Szczesny and Gomes (9.8) for a bit cheaper but no GW28. Then there was Gordon and Harper (8.8). A mix of Szcz and Friedel is not bad at 10.0. If I can make it through 28, I may go Szcz and Gomes on the wildcard.

    RMUCL team

    Ibra, Gomez, Mesii
    Ribery, Mata, Nani, cheapie, cheapie
    Ivanovic, Neinze, Srna, Marcelo, Ottesen
    Cech, Guita

    3.9m in the bank.
    Really struggling.

Thinking of downgrading Gomez to Jurado and Ribery or Mata to Robben, VDV is also in the mix. Heinze will probably be offloaded. I think the key is to go heavily in the defense and get lucky with the captain.

I like Villas fixtures till the end of the season. So, that move would give me a fwd line of Tevez/Bent/Suarez.

good team i would choose eto'o ahed of pedro...

After all matches on a single day have finished and before the next matches start, you can:

1: Replace any player who wasn't sent off, with one from your bench whose team is yet to play.

2: Change your captain if he wasn't sent off, with a player from your squad whose team is yet to play.

Players who are substituted out will score 0 points, the captain bonus will be lost from your original captain if a new captain is selected. Substitutions and captain changes can't be cancelled once confirmed.

An unlimited number of manager substitutions can be made, however, it is not possible to make manager substitutions after games on the last day of the Matchday, as all fixtures will have been completed.

If a manager substitution or captain change is made then no automatic substitutions will take place on your team that Matchday.

A big night at the office for me with regards to the head-2-head. They have 3 Birmingham players Johnson (C), Ferguson & Foster - Djourou, Fab, Adam, DJ; to My Johnson, Carr & Barton - Fab (C), RVP, Szczeney, Adam to play. They are somehow five points ahead.

So lets see... his Johnson (c) takes away your Johnson and your Fab (c) takes away his Fab. I'm calling Foster=Carr, Djorou=Szczney and Adam=Adam. So that's...

Johnson, Ferguson and DJ plays Barton, Fab and RVP.

I reckon you've a more than decent chance of making the 5 points up.

Thanks for that mate, well put. A wee Barton assist would help me out a great deal. I should have my friends league sorted in the next few weeks bar people Capt Berbatov when on fire. Just these pesky strangers to beat now. Then next year the world, 95,000 places up on last year with just the 45 transfers 🙂

I made like 8 in one time at the start but forgot to hit the wildcard button when I was top of the league, it dropped me to like 25th. I have fought back like rocky balboa, clutching back a 70 point downfall.

i cannot understand that...i mean... luiz was as good as dempsey all the game, but he did make penalty last minute, so i understand him not getting bps, since they could lost because of him. but, dempsey who was as good as luiz all game, missed the last penalty who could give them the victory.
        so...
luiz made a penalty who could made them lose the game, but didn't, no bps
dempsey missed the penalty who could give them the victory, therefore it is is fault that fulham came out with a tie.

one gets nothing, the other gets 3bps

one could, but didn't, cost the defeat
        the other cost the tie

... sincerely, this + no bps for nani and 3 bps for rooney, makes this gw bonus hard to understand...

Didn't see the game, but if bonus points are representative of a player's performance during the match then it's quite right that it shouldn't hinge on whether Dempsey scored the penalty or not.

He's tended only to play one game a week due to his knee injury. I think he probably would be fit to start tonight...but won't because he played longer than ideally on Saturday vs Scunthorpe, and there's a massive game away to Forest next Saturday. All signs say no.

Very excited to see whether my playing of my wildcard plays off this week or not. As many have conjectured, should be a pretty low average score this week, and hopefully that will mean that I can get a good few points over almost everyone else in the game.

Keep seeing the rate my champ league team and I am so tempted to join in. I know I've missed 6 rounds but it's a bit of fun! Anyway is there a league I can join?
