Tottenham’s stunning victory in Milan riled Gennaro Gattuso to the point of head-butting a 59-year-old and completely overshadowed Newcastle’s fine 2-0 win at St Andrews. Well almost. European matches make lovely distractions but it’s events on a damp evening in Birmingham that really matter to us Fantasy Managers…

Jonas Gutierrez was undoubtedly the star performer on show. Picked out in our Scouting the Doubles article as a possible punt and subject of recent attention in our Members’ Numbers Game articles, the Argentinian came good with two superb assists which help to earn him 3 FPL Bonus Points for the first time this season.

Leon Best is beginning to emerge as an extremely viable third striker option. His fifth goal of the season saw him out-jump Birmingham’s Roger Johnson on the far post and was enough to earn him Bonus recognition. Best’s starting role in Alan Pardew’s lineup looks assured and at just 4.3, he looks a strong bench forward selection to free up cash elsewhere in our squads.

The Newcastle back four kept its second consecutive clean sheet having claimed a 0-0 at Ewood at the weekend. Their defence looked a shambles in the first-half against Arsenal but Pardew’s rearguard has suddenly discovered some resolve. The likes of Danny Simpson and Mike Williamson are offering value at the very bottom of the price scale, with Jose Enrique and Fabricio Coloccini also options for those looking for the chance of stronger attacking and Bonus returns.

The potential of Best of other Newcastle assets is improved markedly but a run of fixtures that has them face three of the next four at St James’ Park with Bolton, Everton and Wolves all presenting beatable opposition. A trip to Stoke slotted in at Gameweek 30 also offers opportunity for returns. The Magpies have lost just one of their last eight matches.

Alan Pardew kept faith with the same starting lineup that earned him a point a Blackburn. He does now have concerns on the fitness of striker Peter Lovenkrands however. The Dane opened the scoring in the first minute of last night’s encounter but suffered a thigh injury that forced him off on 77 minutes.

Alex McLeish also kept an unchanged side – with Obafemi Martins starting up front against his former club. He was replaced early in the second-half by Cameron Jerome, as the Nigerian again struggled to make an impact. McLeish is likely to rotate his options somewhat for the FA Cup tie at the weekend with the Carling Cup Final to follow. While Birmingham have a blank in Gameweek 28 then, they do face a double fixture against West Brom and Everton immediately after. That is likely to see Fantasy Managers hold their Birmingham assets, although further investment in the likes of Ben Foster, Roger Johnson and Craig Gardner could be called into question following last night’s result.

Tottenham’s superb 1-0 victory in the San Siro set things up beautifully for the second-leg on March 9. That game follows the away trip to Wovles in Gameweek 29 which comes after the Spurs blank in Gameweek 28. Rest and rotation will be a concern then – particularly for owners of Rafael Van der Vaart. The Dutchman returned to action in last night’s victory and should play some part in the visit to Blackpool next Tuesday. Harry Redknapp does have options however and, with the Milan second-leg in mind, we may well see Van der Vaart and certainly Gareth Bale, kept in reserve with the likes of Niko Kranjcar and Roman Pavlyuchenko presenting options for the trip to Wolves. Redknapp will likely be forced into changes to his back four for the trip to Blackpool next week with Vedran Corluka leaving the San Siro on crutches last night following the “challenge” from Mathieu Flamini.

City’s 0-0 draw in Greece with Aris Salonika saw Edin Dzeko draw a blank and miss further opportunities to settle himself in sky blue. The Bosnian earned a recall to a strong City starting lineup with James Milner and Pablo Zabaleta making way for Dzeko and the return of Shaun Wright-Phillips. Roberto Mancini was quick to offer reassurance for his new striker and hinted that he is looking to give Dzeko time to form his partnership with Carlos Tevez…

“This was only the second time Tevez and Dzeko had played together and they need time to gel. They need more games together”

The appearance of Mario Balotelli from the bench however, indicates that Mancini now has options to rotate his troops up front and we can expect to see a few shuffles over City’s next few league games. City play their FA Cup tie with Notts County and the second leg with Aris before returning to Gameweek action against Fulham at Eastlands.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have Rooney but would rather have Tevez for 28/29, if I'm honest. Don't think I'm going to have that option, though - unless 'that' fixture returns to GW28.

Not keen on Tevez for next 2 games at least Tosey? If Chelsea beat Everton Saturday in the FA Cup, I'm certainly bringing him in for Berbs. Then getting rid of Kuyt for T Cahill the following week.

Rooney would be a better shout than Tevez if Man Utd keep their double. The future is a bit cloudy at the moment but the weekend should make things a bit clearer.

Morning team. On a quiet-ish morning i was wondering whether i could ask for some help.
I’m currently tied for top spot in my main mini league. The other guy uses this site + is getting help of some of my more knowledgeable mates as they don’t want me to win again. Left this week i’ve got Huth, Brunt & RVP as captain vs. His Dawson and Fab as captain.
Anyway the one advantage i think i’ve got is that i have a WC left. I’ve just go NO IDEA as to when to use it...dont want to wait too long so that’s it’s not effective, but also worried about not having it as back up!?

Anyone else got theirs left? Even if not, when would you like it for if you did?
    Thanks in advance

i havent looked at the fixture list yet, if i do ill start mapping out a plan and it could be pointless, after the everton game this weekend im sure theyll announce the date of one at some point next week (unless birmingham draw in cup and then they may wait to see the outcome of that)

thats def a way of closing a gap

the chelsea plan isn't a bad one. Personally I'm saving my WC for the final 5 or 6 game run in. Possible champs league resting, FA cup resting, and a completely fresh team tailor made for the last handful of games.

R Van Persie to score in 90 minutes and Arsenal to win the match 5/1 - £35

    Arsenal to win
    3/1 - £15

    RETURNS £270

I had a dream last night we beat barce and Van Persie scored, my dreams are usually scarily spot on! Does anyone think this is a stupid bet though?

Hm, according to Arsenal calendar, there is only one option to play against Tottenham in GW 28. And that would happen if there is no need for replay against Leyton Orient in FA cup (scheduled for March 2), which is highly likely...

Then again, this would mean that Arsenal would have no mid-week break until March 12, playing Wednesday-Saturday for entire month. I doubt that Wenger would go for this...

      What do you reckon, lads?

      Morning all.

I reckon Arsenal gona beat Barcelona tonight. 2 - 1. Puyol missing. RVP in great form. Maxwell wont be able to live with Walcott and Fabregas is fit compared to last year.

If they keep their heads in the 2nd leg they may even have a chance going through in their current form.

I dont think they are anywhere near as good as Barcelona but with it being knockout game over 2 legs Arsenal have a chance.

I doubt Wenger will do the obvious tactic of what other teams have done this year who have played well against Barcelona have done and defend deep, give up posession and force them inside.

Gona be must see . If Arsenal do manage to turn them over they will prob be the first team to beat Barcelona playing possession football against them.

I hope for Ars win. I think it depends on Song. Can he compete with Xavi? That is the key. The teams that have done well against Barsa have managed to stop Xavi. He is the key IMO. Without Puyol and Abidal on the left, Walcot could have a field day. IT depends on Ars at this moment. IT depends on their game. RVP, Walcot, Fabs even Nasri with the minutes that he will get.

I expect great game tonight, a lot better than Milan game. That game was so boring.

I've done exactly the same and still done OK this week- moved up a place in one of my leagues, narrowed the gap in another to 1 point of top (admittidly both still a lot of players to play, he has RVP cap, me Fabs)

I hope RVP gets rested vs Stoke and Fabs has a stormer

We need some sort of tab here for everytime someone on here says "Fabs will come good/explode soon".

Every week he's supposedly going to break out but it never happens.

Face it. Its not happening. He's not on pens so the best you'll get is an assist or two and the obligatory Fab bonus point(s) to make his score respectable.

Just not worth £11.9m. I wildcarded out for Walcott. Van Persie is the Arsenal points king now.

i'm not sure about Young right now, there was big hype to get him in the last few weeks but he has failed to really live up to this..

Both Villa and Everton concern me in that they aren't actually that good, 30 points at this stage of the season does not lie.

I'd still have one Villa and one Everton i reckon, probably two for Everton for the double but they are so hard to predict

Bent looks a good bet. That will make it possible to cover my mini league leader that has Rvp/Berba/Bent. Im just worried tevez fires a blank over the next 2 games and villa score big vs BBurn & Bolton.

That's why I was thinking I need some villa cover. Cant sell tevez/rvp/berba at the moment though.

That leaves A young & Walker as possibilities.

Mark, or anyone, just a couple of ideas about the members area...

Any chance that the season ticker can include details of unscheduled fixtures for each team? So possibly at the end, a tab after GWK 38 with the details of each match yet to be arranged for each club?

Secondly, is there any chance of including pass completion rate for players and teams in the Opta Stats section? I don't know the details of your agreement with Opta, so it maybe the case that you have no say on what statistics they provide the site with, but if possible then having access to pass completion rates (which Opta surely do calculate) would be very helpful. Perhaps not so much from a fantasty perspective, but just in general.

      Ta.

Obviously they have a chance, they are an excellent side and are in a much better position than they were when for the games last season.

Song and Wilshere need to have big games in the middle of midfield, as do Koscielny/Djourou at the back - both of whom I actually think are terrific centre backs.

I'm an Arsenal fan, and despite most people writing us off, I genuinely think we have a chance tonight. No doubt we'll create chances and RVP is on fire so I think we'll definitely score. Agree with Jamesiep - key to us winning is how we cope with their attacking talents, i.e Messi/Villa (Koscielny/Djourou) and Xavi/Iniesta (Song/Wilshere)

😆 Anyhoo this is from a twitter I just recieved (linking an article that appears to have plagiarised the Mirror)

Alex Ferguson's interest in bringing Borussia Dortmund teenager Mario Gotze to Manchester United has intensified. The 18-year-old has cemented his place in the German side’s first team this season and his four Bundesliga goals have helped them to the top of the table. United boss Fergie has had scouts watch the attacking midfielder in action, according to German newspaper Das Bild , but have yet to make an official bid. In light of the academy graduate Gotze’s impressive form, Dortmund have raised his fee from £12m to a staggering £20m.

Even Goetze’s agent Volker Struth was happy for him to spurn lucrative offers from abroad to extend his Dortmund contract until 2014. “We think it’s best for the boy,” said Struth. “He is only 18 years old and lives with his parents a few miles from the stadium. His departure is almost impossible.” 🙁

Arsenal H/T / F/T @ 13/2 with Hills looks tempting. It's a two legged match so everyone thinking that Barca will go through, makes this bet a viable option as Barca will still have the home 2nd leg.

If Arsenal are going to beat them tonight, they will likely take the lead which could well be early on making the bet a goer.

It's too big a price in my opinion.

I can't see past a draw tonight and Barca win in Nou Camp.

Although if Walcott, Fabregas, RVP, Wilshere especially are on form, who knows.

I'm 5 points up in the members cup, with a lot of the same players as my opponent.

Basically it boils down to my Huth and Walcott vs his VDV and Brunt. Place your bets now!

VDV gets rested, maybe walcott also. If so Huth should take it. Im more positive about VDV getting rested.

I cant see VDV being rested vs Blackpool. He was knackered so came off, but didn't look in any discomfort.

I doubt Vdv plays 90 mins and I wouldn't hold out hope for a big score straight away. GW29 appears a more realistic time for him to get his groove back on.

Indeed! Check my history, difference can be made real quick! Very tight which is good (or bad depending on how you see it), still can't believe Newcastle got 2 CS this GW

top 1k is my target, it looks like i dont have any chance of winning my minileague now and anm miles ahead of 3rd place

ill make a tidy profit again so just want top 1k now for personal target

Don't give up. Your opponent is sliding big time... He was 10th overall 8 weeks ago now he's 16th!!! At that rate you'll easily beat him in 732 more game weeks!!!

does anyone have a view on the Man Utd right back situation. Is O'Shea in or is Ferguson going to start playing Rafael...?? Its a double game week next week, and they are both attractive cheapees.

DGW only gonna take place if Everton wins cup game vs Chelsea (not that I would mind as I have Vidic & Nani).
Funny how Rafael seemed nailed on and has a big ? over his head (since he got redcarded isn't it?)
