Tottenham’s stunning victory in Milan riled Gennaro Gattuso to the point of head-butting a 59-year-old and completely overshadowed Newcastle’s fine 2-0 win at St Andrews. Well almost. European matches make lovely distractions but it’s events on a damp evening in Birmingham that really matter to us Fantasy Managers…

Jonas Gutierrez was undoubtedly the star performer on show. Picked out in our Scouting the Doubles article as a possible punt and subject of recent attention in our Members’ Numbers Game articles, the Argentinian came good with two superb assists which help to earn him 3 FPL Bonus Points for the first time this season.

Leon Best is beginning to emerge as an extremely viable third striker option. His fifth goal of the season saw him out-jump Birmingham’s Roger Johnson on the far post and was enough to earn him Bonus recognition. Best’s starting role in Alan Pardew’s lineup looks assured and at just 4.3, he looks a strong bench forward selection to free up cash elsewhere in our squads.

The Newcastle back four kept its second consecutive clean sheet having claimed a 0-0 at Ewood at the weekend. Their defence looked a shambles in the first-half against Arsenal but Pardew’s rearguard has suddenly discovered some resolve. The likes of Danny Simpson and Mike Williamson are offering value at the very bottom of the price scale, with Jose Enrique and Fabricio Coloccini also options for those looking for the chance of stronger attacking and Bonus returns.

The potential of Best of other Newcastle assets is improved markedly but a run of fixtures that has them face three of the next four at St James’ Park with Bolton, Everton and Wolves all presenting beatable opposition. A trip to Stoke slotted in at Gameweek 30 also offers opportunity for returns. The Magpies have lost just one of their last eight matches.

Alan Pardew kept faith with the same starting lineup that earned him a point a Blackburn. He does now have concerns on the fitness of striker Peter Lovenkrands however. The Dane opened the scoring in the first minute of last night’s encounter but suffered a thigh injury that forced him off on 77 minutes.

Alex McLeish also kept an unchanged side – with Obafemi Martins starting up front against his former club. He was replaced early in the second-half by Cameron Jerome, as the Nigerian again struggled to make an impact. McLeish is likely to rotate his options somewhat for the FA Cup tie at the weekend with the Carling Cup Final to follow. While Birmingham have a blank in Gameweek 28 then, they do face a double fixture against West Brom and Everton immediately after. That is likely to see Fantasy Managers hold their Birmingham assets, although further investment in the likes of Ben Foster, Roger Johnson and Craig Gardner could be called into question following last night’s result.

Tottenham’s superb 1-0 victory in the San Siro set things up beautifully for the second-leg on March 9. That game follows the away trip to Wovles in Gameweek 29 which comes after the Spurs blank in Gameweek 28. Rest and rotation will be a concern then – particularly for owners of Rafael Van der Vaart. The Dutchman returned to action in last night’s victory and should play some part in the visit to Blackpool next Tuesday. Harry Redknapp does have options however and, with the Milan second-leg in mind, we may well see Van der Vaart and certainly Gareth Bale, kept in reserve with the likes of Niko Kranjcar and Roman Pavlyuchenko presenting options for the trip to Wolves. Redknapp will likely be forced into changes to his back four for the trip to Blackpool next week with Vedran Corluka leaving the San Siro on crutches last night following the “challenge” from Mathieu Flamini.

City’s 0-0 draw in Greece with Aris Salonika saw Edin Dzeko draw a blank and miss further opportunities to settle himself in sky blue. The Bosnian earned a recall to a strong City starting lineup with James Milner and Pablo Zabaleta making way for Dzeko and the return of Shaun Wright-Phillips. Roberto Mancini was quick to offer reassurance for his new striker and hinted that he is looking to give Dzeko time to form his partnership with Carlos Tevez…

“This was only the second time Tevez and Dzeko had played together and they need time to gel. They need more games together”

The appearance of Mario Balotelli from the bench however, indicates that Mancini now has options to rotate his troops up front and we can expect to see a few shuffles over City’s next few league games. City play their FA Cup tie with Notts County and the second leg with Aris before returning to Gameweek action against Fulham at Eastlands.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

"Darling, what did you do at work today?"

"Well, spent most of it talking about noshing one's ear off"

If I had my appendix still I would eat that. Most pain i've ever experienced when that bad boy decided it wanted to pop.

Two high profile appendicitis sufferers this season: Luka Modric and Mark Noble. Actually, make that one.

See this is kind of what I was thinking about. Taste and texture rather than the actual ordeal of eating it. So I think I'd go for a kidney, bit of butter or whip up an ol steak and kidney pie.

But it's your own kidney that the gurriers in the back alley in Kildare will be force feeding you. I'd rather they went for something a little less vital.

I nearly took my little finger off flushing the lavvie once (handle broke off in my hand) and its a bit withered now, so maybe that.

Might prevent me from improving on my 28 handicap in golf though

                    horror football story:

my uncle was up a step ladder fixing a football net, he slipped off the ladder and got his wedding ring caught in the net as he fell

ripped his f*cking finger clean off

Really not looking forward to ITV coverage tonight. Clive Tyldesley's bag of cliches will be bulging by the time he sits down to commentate, especially because its a genuinely big game and he doesn't get those often.

I;m going to go a little further and say Tyldlesley is scum of the earth and is indicative of the poor excuse for football coverage that ITV thrusts our way.

whether its "Over to our taxi driver expert Andy Townsend" Or "back to the studio" to hear Southgate chat away to that talking Toby jug full of p!ss that is Chiles (thanks to Stewart Lee for that last ref. btw).

And don;t get me started on that Everton game and the ad break....etc...etc.

I'm going to watch the game, sound down and listen to a tape of my dog easing out a stool in the garden on a loop, which will offer about the same amount of insightful football knowledge as that miscreant of broadcasting Tyldesley.

    Guys

Deeply concerned about my league as theres money at stake.

I am holding off a 126 point lead on my rival but i think i will struggle next gameweek. He still has his WC to play.
For this GW, I have still to play:
Fab(C), Walcott, RVP, Brunt, Adam, Huth
    He has
    Bergovic Fab(C) Walcott, Shawcross

Unsure wat to do for GW28 to hold him off

    Team
    Bergovic (Foster)
    Coleman Kelly Rafael Huth Simpson
    Nani Adam Brunt (Fab, Walcott)
    Tevez Berbatov (RVP)

    Should i save my transfer

sounds like you will be ok with that lead tbh, just dont do anything ridiculous, maybe swap walcott out since nasri is back to fitness and they miss next week? if you can afford cahill or soemthing for him, that might be alrite

Like many other people, I will be transferring in Tim Cahill this week (for a arse/ spurs player).

Total FPL shows Cahill as price protected - how long does price protection last? I think I remember reading somewhere it was X amount of days after a flag was removed. Cahill's yellow flag was removed 4th Feb if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks in advance for any responses 🙂

    Ethers is having injections!

    From the Football365.com web site:
    =====
Stoke manager Tony Pulis expects Matthew Etherington to be fit for the FA Cup fifth round tie at home to Brighton.

Etherington missed last weekend's 1-0 defeat at Birmingham owing to a hamstring injury, but has now returned to light training.

He is due to step up his training on Thursday and Pulis is looking forward to having the winger available for the visit of League One leaders Brighton.
"Matthew's been a bit sore, but he's all right and the fitness lads think he'll be OK," said Pulis in The Sentinel.

"He did a bit of jogging for about an hour and then went for a dip in the pool before having an injection.
    ===

I'll be looking to transfer him out. Sounds like he is at risk of breaking down again.

There is a chance of visceral larva migrans in humans, but this is typically only the case if you have young children who don't practice the same hygienic standards as adults. Is it a fenbendazole based drug that you're giving your cat?

Stock is right generally round worm in cats is a problem with smaller children who may pick up the eggs by so called "faecal-oral" spread and then may get visceral larvae migrans or ocular larval migrans. In general the same drugs to treat animals are used in humans as well for the treatment - but not always. You need to check the active ingredient in the medicine.

Yes but it was alot different back then, Arsenal were missing a few very important players along with Fabregas who was half injured, Arshavin going off after 20 minutes. This time they have alot of players who have improved greatly including the like of Nasri, Wilshire and Walcott and their defense has even improved a little, not by much though, and they have all key players available.

It finished 2-2 as well last year n the home game, so why so against the win this year?? I'm not saying they are going to beat Barca in the Nou camp just that i they they have a great chance of winning tonight and decent chance of knocking them out imo.

He's actually only the second most efficient scorer in La Liga!

Include assists with that and he is the most efficient overall by a mile, with a goal or assist coming every 47 minutes lol.

I think you have only seen worse because Charlie's studs were not in the ground like Ramsey and Eduardo's. Had the big Croat been standing on that foot, we would have seen one snap, crackle and pop never to be forgotten.

The rules are quite clear. Two feet off the ground is a straight red card.

agree. there's never any real need to do that kind of challenge- it actually hampers the chances of you getting the ball back/connecting with the ball- lessenting the surface area your legs cover, stopping you getting it if its tapped past the first leg etc. etc.. It's always a challenge to injure, and should always be straight red.

once again we are shown a complete inability of referees to remain consistent. Football gents, is a joke, simply a joke

After a semi-fail midfield with Barton and Young this GW, I'm starting to fear the worst getting Cahill in for Walcott too for next GW.

They'll all be at home though and 2 are on pens, so hope they all get a goal. With the dgw for Cahill though he should really get the nod, who knows though, if Cahill scores a couple as Everton beat Chelsea then you might want Rooney's DGW first, then Cahill.

Down by 63 in my mini-league and need some help. In 4th place at the moment.

The 3 above me all have: RVP, Nani, Foster. (I have RVP and Nani)

2 of them have: Hughes, Adam, Fabregas, VDV, Barton, Odemwingie. (And I share Adam, Fabregas, VDV, Nani with them)

The major differences between all 4 teams is the defense. I need help here. Coleman, Hughes, and Kelly are the only shared by 2 teams a piece. (With my team having both Kelly and Coleman)

What move(s) should I make this GW? Thanks gents.

Too early for differentials yet. Focus on getting the most points for your team you possibly can.

Unfortunatly for you, you've got bigger fish to fry with 4 (potentially 5 - if Adam picks up a booking) outfield players out in gameweek 28.

Personally I'd look at VDV > Cahill - differential and nice upcoming fixtures. I also think Tevez is essential next two gameweeks. Berba > Tevez if you can afford (unless Utd get their double gameweek) or RVP > Tevez if not.

        Hope this helps.

Cheers dude. Just looking at your point above. Wouldn't worry at all about your defence this week. You can put 4 out if needed all with decent of half chances of a cleanie. Like I say, focus on those who are out.

The moves will be forced upon you if Adam gets booked, you'll have to choose who to sell from your 4 non-starters too. Personally I don't think Fabregas is worth his price, maybe sell him and then buy back Nasri/Walcott afterwards.

It's too complex a situation to really offer good advice.
