Arsenal’s stunning victory over Barcelona saw Robin Van Persie continue his unstoppable scoring streak, while Samir Nasri sparkled on his return from injury but was still overshadowed by the emerging Jack Wilshere – if only he could start fetching Fantasy points to match his performances.

Elsewhere, just over 7000 unfortunates witnessed Wigan’s reserves get dumped out of the FA Cup by Bolton’s second string striker on a battlefield of a pitch. The glamour of the FA Cup put nicely into perspective.

Here’s the notes from last night’s football…

While Arsenal’s 2-1 win reaffirmed their current form, in Fantasy terms it carried little significance other than alerting us to the fact that Arsenal will now go into an extremely competitive second-leg in Spain.

That tie follows the Gameweek 29 fixture with Sunderland and we must now be aware of the rotation implications around that match. Wenger has shown to this point that the league has remained a major priority, even over ambitions in Europe but, having gained a foothold against Barcelona, there will surely be the temptation to preserve key individuals for the return leg.

Samir Nasri’s return from a hamstring injury immediately puts him back on our radars as an option in midfield. Nasri lined up on the Gunners left-flank with Andrey Arshavin relegated to the bench. The Frenchman immediately demonstrated flashes of his pre-injury form, providing a smart assist as Arshavin came off the bench to fire the winner. Nasri will be backed to start returning points once league action resumes.

Nasri’s return is timely given the rather muted form of Cesc Fabregas and considering that Arsenal’s assets, including Fabregas, are likely to be sold in big numbers as we approach their blank fixture in Gameweek 28. Nasri could well benefit from heavy investment following this, if the midfield step down from Fabregas to the Frenchman becomes a popular strategy for Gameweek 29 onwards.

Arsenal now go into their second fixture of Gameweek 27 against Stoke next Wednesday, once they have made the trip to Orient in the FA Cup on Sunday. Rotation at the weekend looks inevitable but it will be interesting to see if any of this carries over to Wednesday’s league fixture – it seems unlikely. Sunday’s lineup will give us better indication as to Wenger’s starting XI for the visit of Stoke.

Over in the FA Cup, Ivan Klasnic did his best to offer a reminder of his existence to Owen Coyle by scoring the winner in the fourth round replay at Wigan. The Croatian has slipped further down the pecking order at the Reebok following the arrival of Daniel Sturridge, but may at least have given himself further opportunities for starts by steering Bolton into the fifth round – Bolton now go to Fulham on Sunday.

Klasnic was part of a shuffled Bolton lineup that saw the likes of Adam Bogdan, Fabrice Muamba, Martin Petrov also earn starts. Chung-Yong Lee made a return to the starting lineup having been left on the bench against Everton.

Bolton’s victory was marred by a setback for full-back Sam Ricketts who sustained an Achilles injury and was stretchered from the field. The early prognosis indicates that his season could be over. Owen Coyle certainly sounded pessimistic in his post-match comments…

“Sam’s damaged his Achilles and it doesn’t look great. It could be quite severe and we hope that’s not the scenario but it looks like it will be a lengthy period of time.”

This latest setback for Bolton arrives off the back of Zat Knight’s knee injury which leaves him sidelined for around six weeks. Bolton’s defensive resources now looked stretched then. Nonetheless, David Wheater looked accomplished in the Bolton back four last night and Coyle’s side earned their third clean sheet in the last four matches.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez made no less than nine changes to the lineup that came away with a point from Anfield at the weekend. Wigan is an unreliable source of Fantasy talent at the best of times but, with some many changes on show, there really was little of any significance for Fantasy Managers here.

The DW Stadium surface was perhaps the only factor of note. A major problem on the night, Martinez complained that his side could not put “three or four passes together” as a result of the uneven pitch. Significantly perhaps, Man United are next to visit Wigan on February 26 and the club are due to relay the pitch in time for that match. The playing surface could well be a factor in Gameweek 28 then.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not sure Tevez will get much out of Fulham though.

I don't disagree with using your free to do Van Persie to Rooney or Tevez but if its a 4 pt hit then you really are better off getting an Everton player with the other transfer so you have the DGW player already in place for the following week when you get Van Persie back with your free.

Left myself in a right mess! 🙁
6 not playing (7 if you count Stockdale) before injuries and clueless about what to do about it. Don't want to lose any of 3 Arsenal, would cost me .5m to lose RVP for say, Rooney and then get him back. Would cost me .4m to sell then re-buy VdV. 2 Brum have dgw looming and I have only one free transfer. Toying with Dj to Rooney but seems daft taking DJ out with so many not playing. Bentley/Walcott to Cahill?
Would you ride it out and go with 9 players keeping 3 Arsenal, VdV and Johnson, 8 and keep Bentley as well or take some hits and play 10 or 11?
    Any help much appreciated. 🙂

I'm doing Fabs out, because I don't think I'll lose much, and He's worth loads. If you do the same, you can play 10. Maybe take a 4 point hit?

Is the best option to go from Bentley to Cahill? Gives you the double gameweek player for 29 and an extra player for 28.

Could maybe do DJ to Zigic for another Birmingham player the following week.

Right so I see some debate earlier between AP and DbRonaldo etc etc etc.

So thought I would comment. AP said that Rooney and Fabregas are roughly playing the same position so I made a couple of Chalkboards. This first one is Rooney's passing Vs City this Saturday just gone.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/E439H35A1347p183SX3U

It shows that he is playing virtually attacking midfield. Yes, passing isn't everything, but it basically is, also seeing as Rooney only had two shots during that game. One of them being the wonder goal. Compare that to Fabregas Vs Man City.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/e1ZE4665s56O1672HL53

Fabregas and Rooney are playing virtually the same position and Fabregas had two shots in his game Vs City as well. Then we look at assists and goals this year. Rooney has scored 5 and assisted 10 in 1322 minutes (last season Rooney got 26 goals 6 assists in approximately double the pitch time, if you were to double Rooney's current amount. It would read 10 goals 20 assists. Which is only two "involvements" less than last year) . Fabregas has 3 goals and 10 assists in 1477 minutes (which is the exact same as what he got in the 08/09 season after 1900 minutes). And seeing as they are playing virtually in the same position, the stats speak for themselves.

HOWEVER, Fabregas made 70/84 attempted passes Rooney 23/30, which shows how both Fabregas is more involved and their different styles of play. Compare these stats now to that of last year when they both had FANTASTIC seasons.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/r28N8bx1d0Dl442421x2

Rooney is playing virtually the same position as he is this year and made more attempted passes 32/52. So was definitely more involved last season. Now this is interesting. Look at Fabregas's chalkboard below.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/I0H0p35p6v8E66S9TLYv

That is taken from the Arsenal Vs Liverpool game (Fabs didn't play Vs CIty (H)) And he is actually playing deeper than he is this year, or his work effort was higher last year and he was seen in a wider variety of positions, he also made only 48/61 passes. If you were to look at the chalkboards from games Vs Man U and Wolves you would see a similar pattern also. Which indicates to me that his work effort was definitely larger last year. As was Rooney's involvement. Which is a reason behind a supposed lack of form from both players however limited pitch time IMO is the main reason.

In conclusion AP is right they are virtually playing in the same position however Rooney has taken a lot more shots 44 to Fabs 29 (Roughly) But that would be his strikers instincts. Also they are having average seasons compared to last year the pair of them. And if Arsenal learnt how to finish, Fabs would have a lot more assists. Fabregas is also the definite statistical FPL option.

Im sorry but you cant be that selective. Its based over an entire season. You cant just compare how they both played v Man city in one game and try to draw some parallels.

Im sure I can dig up some heat maps form another 1 off game showing Fabs playing DM and Rooney CF and 30 yards apart.

In the whole they are not playing anywhere near the same position.

Go have a look then Dbronaldo, I am sure you can, but seeing as Fabregas In your opinion probably plays deeper in the bigger games then surely he would be playing DM in that game, no?

I actually think that Fabregas plays in a more advanced role against the better sides. Song and Wilshere are afforded much more freedom against the lesser sides, so Fabregas inevitably ends up having to do his fair share defensive.

And i meant to add its more about where they spend the entirity of the matches ie Heat map rather than where they make a pass.

        For example

Twice last night Kosienly made 2 breaks out of defense and was in the AM midfield position when laying off the ball. His average position is very different.

And when you say "passing isnt everything but it basically is" it doesnt help.

It would be interesting to see RVP & Rooney's heat maps. They play in a similar position. I watched pretty much every Arsenal game last season and he played a lot more advanced then he has this season.

My comment about not wanting to call it a debate is in reference to the earlier one today not your post.

If one side is not basing an argument on facts then fails to respond when about 6 people counter it then its not a debate. Besides there was no basis for it in the first place when it wasnt even true.

                    - you know the side that doesnt give a sh*t what the facts are but if they can slip enough sh*t into a debate they enough people will think what they are saying may have some value

not sure rooney cutting inside onto his right 100 times out of 100 then running across the pitch until he spots a pass to nani in the corner or sideways to scholes/fletcher is worthy of comparison with fabregas facing forwards and utilising a full 180 degree scope of sexual unpredictable through balls is comparable though, regardless of whether it results in it looking as if rooney might be playing as deep as fabregas.
so we allow rooney to be over-hyped last year on little more than he played as more of a goal-hanger than before but we can't allow him to be under-hyped for playing deeper again? double standards of pomme de shrek proportions

no one else think the nature of Meireles' goals (delicious volleys) means that he can't possibly keep his form up? Are they really going to keep going in every game? Personally I'd be more tempted if he was scoring a tap-in every game after a well timed forward run

This weeks main topics are going to be:

    1) Which Arsenal, Birminham or Tottenham players to swap out - answer, either someone you want out long-term, or else the person you'll lose the least cash on if you want them back.

    2) Getting rid of Adam on his 9 yellows

I have my 2 free transfers, so it's a case of Fabregas out + someone else if necessary, and next week, fabs back, or maybe a birmingham defender if I keep my free transfer.

A lot depends for me on whether Utd have a DGW in 28 as to what changes I do.

I was late to the Van Persie party so, if I sell him for Rooney (if he has a double) I'd only lose £0.2m which is easily get backable.

It would also tempt me into a 4 pointer for Cahill knowing he has a double the week after.

A single gameweek for Utd makes just doing Lennon to Cahill the better move for me to field 11.

I am keeping my two Brum players, and am shipping out Fabregas and Walcott, for two of Cahill/Downing/Fletcher/Yaya Toure. If United have their famed DGW, I will do Bent to Rooney, if not, not. The week after, I will be reversing the process, except I will look at Nasri and Arshavin instead of Fabrgas - barring injuries, obviously. Lots of nasty points hits!!! 🙂

For those in peril on the sea of unreason, like me:

Occam's razor (or Ockham's razor[1]), often expressed in Latin as the lex parsimoniae, translating to law of parsimony, law of economy or law of succinctness, is a principle that generally recommends selecting the competing hypothesis that makes the fewest new assumptions, when the hypotheses are equal in other respects. For instance, they must both sufficiently explain available data in the first place.

                  🙂

Basically put the simplest explanation is usually the likeliest.
More archaeologists need to understand this, you wouldn't believe some of the crackpot nonsense out there.

Good stuff Greg. Though from that you can also see that Fabregas spent 30% of his time in his own half compared to Rooney's 10%.

In other words, a forward who drops back ISN'T playing the same position as a midfielder who comes forward. I'd be interested to see RvP's heat map as compared to Rooney.

        Yep. I should of said.

Its the next area of the pitch where the attacking mid is playing. IMO and both Fabs and Rooney spend the majority of their time there.

I don't want to be over critical because it is well thought out and written, but the more I look at the heat map the more it seems obvious that Rooney is the more forward of the two. He hasn't had more shots because of his instincts, but because he's a striker not a mid. If you just take the sums of each row, you see:

          R F
          12 7
          45 29
          32 28
          4 25
          1 11
          1 0

In other words, Rooney spends more time in each row of the attacking half than Fabregas, while Fabregas spends more time in each row of the defending half (apart from the 1 vs 0 on their own goalline).

Don't not be over critical, argue your point.

And yes, granted but the fact that Fabs is running into the opposition half and Rooney back into his own half (That direction), means that there output is generally from the same positions.

Im afraid it doesnt greg. Again its about overall match day position and where it occurs from. Of course they will spend time in same position. Even Ashley cole gets into the box 5 or 6 times a game. But the majority of the time is spent on the left wing

Well at the Emirates and away from the emirates (Don't quote me on this), Fabregas will play higher up the pitch against the lesser teams due to the endless amounts of pressure being put on a team and vice versa with Rooney, so against the tougher teams when Berb is playing (Watching the game(Not chalkboarded)) Rooney seems to be further back. It is dependant on circumstances. Granted. And also bare in mind that the City game this year was played without Berbatov, so Rooney would naturally be playing higher up the pitch.

Greg you cant take that seriously when your basing your entire point there on something which may or may not be true

                  "dont quote me on this".

I see what your saying but for all the game they play in different positions and roles entirely.

The Don't quote me on this was basically "I may be wrong but I think I'm right".

I am not going to say something like "The word you are looking for is right" Or something silly like that 😉

They play in different roles. But similar positions. Quote where I said anything about roles please?

Greg the position you play dictates the role

Ugh i blame AP for this nonsense. Fabs plays mainly in cm and Rooney as a striker. A farce that this is even being debated when nothing has been given as evidence.

Isn't the fact that one is supposedly running back and the other forward into the same zone suggest that they can't possibly be playing the same position or role?

    Guys
    holding a 126 point lead.
Should i hold off a transfer this week for this team

    Bergovic (Foster)
    Coleman Huth Simpson Kelly Rafael
    Nani Adam Brunt (Fab, Walcott)
    Berbatov Tevez(C) (RVP)

    Then for Gw 29
    Use my two transfers for
Brunt, Berbatov -> Cahill and Carroll

    Then on Gw 30
    Do a hit for
Rafael, Adam -> Walker and VDV

    giving me by Gw 30
    Foster Bergovic
    Walker Huth Coleman Simpson Kelly
    VDV Fab Nani Walcott Cahill
    Tevez RVP Carroll

The very first thing you should do is breathe in deeply, then relax. The next thing is to consider whether posting this info every day is giving away your dastardly plan to your rival ... The final thing to consider is the existential nature of your 126 point lead ... only then will I feel free to offer you some advice ... 😉

    Kingson (Foster)
    Coleman Huth Kelly Rafael (R.Johnson)
    Nani Adam Cahill (Ferguson Fabregas)
    Odemwingie Tevez

    Cahill is coming in for Walcott but;

    B) Ferguson > Silva/Fellaini

i'm sick of talking about rooney. it's been 12 months now 😯 of getting reeled in

whatever rooney added in goals last season he lost in assists. an assist is just as good as a goal but it wont matter as naturally goals get more attention. i didn't like how goals made rooney the best thing since sliced bread last season when he was just as good a player as the year before (a top striker). so this season for consistency sake i have to cut him some slack for not scoring goals when he has been getting lots of assists.

however his all round game has been pretty shoddy far too often, mainly away games (i would say 'imo' but i don't think even the most biased of utd fans would let home games against sunderland and villa let mask their disappointment in rooney).
BUT i still blame his niggling ankle problems and the pressure of a title chasing man utd team and dependent england side causing him to rush back again and again making those problems worse.
the signs of resurgence are becoming a little more frequent lately, that over-head kick wasn't bad was it 😉 and i fully expect him to have shaken off the ankle and world cup induced rust by the end of this season. so much so i expect it to be a horrible pain in the arse trying to squeeze him tevez, rvp and possibly even torres into 3 striker spots in the last few gameweeks of the season

It's a bit out there, but he could be struggling with Kai, i.e not getting enough sleep etc. Also, he has missed Valencia massively this year imo.

Form is temporary, class is permanent. Rooney is still a very good player, nowhere near the likes of Messi and Ronaldo, but still very good and one of the best in the PL imo.

That's so far out there, it's not even in Manchester.

For me, he just seems massively frustrated by the role he's been asked to play. And I think the furore over his wage demands may have rocked his confidence. Can't be nice knowing everyone in the UK thinks you're a kunt.

you could be right about the kid.
and imagine you were rooney going into a world cup (he certainly comes across as one of the more patriotic and passionate players) and thinking he maybe had a chance to win and be top scorer in the tournamnet and go down in history. ignoring nagging doubts in his head for weeks that his ankle wouldn't let him achieve this dream. then all of a sudden a two week nightmare is over and your team has crashed out and you particularly have had a shocking tournament.
that would play on my mind for life, let alone a few months

It's down to burnout. He was a class player before last season when he became a goalscorer, and because he hasn't scored the goals this season his confidence was shot. He stepped up last year when Ronaldo left and luckily United had other players to step up this year.
He's the most high profile of all our players and it's getting so boring watching him scrutinised to the very last detail. It's not all about him, it's about the team.

if valencia's return means nani on the left at all it could be detrimental to man utd imo. like the whole torres at chelsea thing right now adding a top player into the equation could actually be a bad thing

Fellaini looks a better shout than Arteta and is a lot cheaper.
