Chelseaโ€™s poor form continues as they crash out the FA Cup in round four, leaving Europe as their only real crack at silverware this season. Birmingham keep up their great cup form, Stoke blow away Brighton and an unimpressive Man United XI see off a Crawley side that will no doubt be patronised as “plucky” in many of this morning’s broadsheets.

Carlo Ancelotti dropped Nicolas Anelka and Michael Essien to the bench for Chelseaโ€™s fourth-round replay at home to Everton and, with both January big-money signings ineligible, Didier Drogba returned to the starting line-up, in a game that also saw Yury Zhirkov return from a calf injury sustained back in November. Chelsea continued their recent goal-shy ways, however, failing to score within the 90 minutes for the third game in succession. Frank Lampardโ€™s goal at the end of the first period of extra-time looked like clinching victory, but a fantastic Leighton Baines free-kick with one minute of the match left took the game to penalties. Misses from Anelka and Ashley Cole allowed Phil Neville to step forward and knock the holders out the cup.

As Andy has previously mentioned, this Chelsea loss has a significant knock-on effect in terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL). With Ancelottiโ€™s side now out of the FA Cup, this upcoming gameweek 28 will see Man United playing twice; first away to Wigan on Saturday afternoon before travelling to Stamford Bridge three days later for the showdown with the champions. This game will be Chelseaโ€™s next domestic match and Ancelotti will surely have his title-holders fired-up for such an occasion. A Scouting the Doubles piece on this is imminent.

Following Evertonโ€™s limp display at Bolton last gameweek, David Moyes made three changes to his starting XI for the Stamford Bridge showdown, with Phil Jagielka, Leon Osman and Jermaine Beckford earning recalls. With only one clean sheet in their last sixteen league games, Everton havenโ€™t exactly been offering much in defensive Fantasy Returns, but this gutsy showing will hearten those who are considering any Toffees defenders for their kind upcoming run of league fixtures. Moyesโ€™ team will no doubt be buoyed by this victory and Everton -sitting just three points off the drop zone- will now need to push on and bring this form to the league.

With next weekโ€™s Carling Cup Final undoubtedly in mind, Alex McLeish made eight changes from last midweekโ€™s league match with Newcastle for Birminghamโ€™s home tie against Sheffield Wednesday. Ben Foster, Craig Gardner, David Bentley and Nikola Zigic were all benched, with Cameron Jerome partnering Obafemi Martins up front for the first time. After Jean Beausejour grabbed the gameโ€™s opener, Martins found the net for the first time in a Birmingham shirt and left-back David Murphy grabbed the third.

Alexander Hleb looks like facing Cup Final heartbreak against his former club, though. Having supplied the assist for Birminghamโ€™s first two goals, he was then stretchered from the field with a knee injury before the half hour mark and replaced by Bentley. McLeish has indicated the midfielder will have a scan in the next 24 hours, with the club currently unsure of the severity.

Matthew Etherington passed a late fitness test on his back to take a place in the Stoke starting line-up for the home match with Brighton, but lasted just 38 minutes before being replaced. Tony Pulis rested Dean Whitehead and played John Carew up front with Jonathan Walters, meaning both Ricardo Fuller and Kenwyne Jones sat on the bench. The front pair rewarded their managerโ€™s faith with a goal apiece, with Walters also grabbing an assist for Ryan Shawcrossโ€™ third.

Man Unitedโ€™s starting XI at home to Crawley bore little resemblance to their usual line-up, with only Rafael a regular starter, in a team that also included the likes of Michael Carrick, Anderson and Javier Hernandez. Anderson, struggling with a knock from early on, was replaced at the end of the first 45 minutes by Wayne Rooney, whose only contribution was collecting a yellow card late on. Sir Alex Ferguson must be hugely disappointed by the performances of his fringe players, with not one of them managing to impress in a thoroughly uneventful Old Trafford match.

ANyway, ur porno mag are laying tonight, and a couple of people reckon bilbao might get something. any thoughts?

Biblao are a very decent team and I believe have some record in Spain for holding Barcelona scoreless when they met in the cup this year and Barcelona only went through on away goals
Saying that they are away from their fortress and given what happened Barcelona midweek id expect them to turn up properly focused. But Bilbao have the players to trouble but they may not get enough of the ball to do so.
Llorente maybe be worth a punt as an anytime scorer if Puyol is still out.

          3-1.

So tired of BBC magic of the cup and false reporting. "Fifty-three places separate these teams in the league - nothing separates them as we enter the final minute of stoppage time. Can Orient hang on?"

Firstly its Arsenal second team and obviously Orient will be up for it. Where would that Arsenal team finish anyway if they played each week? Mid table at best.

Plus is the FA Cup which is the 3rd competition on their or any decent clubs list and they have a carling cup final next week

They were saying the same nonsense yesterday about Crawley nearly getting a result against the "league leaders". When the team United put out would do well to stay in the division.

    Nonsense again from the BBC

Yes of course they are a squad member and a player from Arsenal / United. Its the use of the league positions to try and compare them is nonsense/
Its practically a full other team which is 1st and 2nd in the league so it means not in the context bar the name on the jerey.

They might have well have said there was 55 places between Orient and Real Madrid. Or maybe the next time Man United U 18 are playing they can mention how many positions there are between their opponents and the United senior team.

As it happens I agree with DBR here, United and Arsenal chose not to play the sides that have got them to 1st and 2nd in the league so it is daft to make the comparison.

I don't agree with you however criticising the BBC for it. They are there to promote the cup as it's only competition they screen live in the face of fierce competition from the PL and CL. The FA Cup has taken so much beating recently and the new proposals for seeding is a total disgrace.

I just dont like any sort of false reporting in any form just to sway the masses to watch it. For me the product is the product and no amount of made up "magic" is going to take from the fact the its a cup which will never be as it was due to better competitions elsewhere and the changing of the game.

They were doING much of the same this morning during the West Brom - Wolves game. Took me nearly 5min to find a link to the scores as they had 2 full page captions on live Formula one testing taking over the full screen.

Agreed on the seeding thing. I think BBC need to get over the fact that the game has moved on. Better to adapt and move on rather than promote cringe worthy stuff.

Its still doesnt mean the team Orient or Crawley played this week has anything to do with 1st or 2nd in the league.

If the real team played them it would probably 9-0 in both matches. And if they got a draw then it would an amazing result

But lets not let facts get in the way of reporting from the BBC using anything they can to try and make something meaningless meaningful

The team that Crawley played are first in the League and Leyton played second - that's a fact!

There's no such thing as a "Real Team" it's a squad game.

Man Utd played Hernandez, Rooney, Carrick, Gibson, Smalling, Brown, Rafael who have all contributed to Man Utd this season.

Arsenal played Almunia, Sagna, Squillaci, Rosicky, Denilson, Song, Arshavin, Chamakh and Bendtner who have all contributed to Arsenal being second this season.

Rooney played 45min in the cup and wasnt half arsed for good reason.

The players who are making a difference in both teams - Vidic, VDS,evra, rio, scholes, fletcher, Nani, Berbatov
Djrourou,Kos,Cesc, Nasri,RVP, etc werent anywhere to be seen.

Fabregas likely to go down by 0.1 as a result of him missing a week?

I've got him, but thinking of getting rid for Cahill (who I had planned to bring in for Nolan), then bringing Cesc back in for Nolan the following week.

Worth getting rid of Cesc to field 11? or save the transfer and the 0.1?

Barcelona v Athletic Bilbao - Sky Sports 1 (Sunday 2000GMT)

No team is more familiar with Barcelona under Pep Guardiola than Athletic Bilbao and the Basques will be looking to use that knowledge and experience to their advantage when they travel to the Camp Nou on Sunday evening.

This will be the tenth meeting between the two sides in less than two years and though Joaquin Caparros' men have yet to get the better of the champions, results and performances in head-to-heads over the past 12 months show some improvement.

Indeed, the recent Copa del Rey double-header will serve as huge encouragement for the visitors as they emerged unbeaten over the course of three hours with Barca squeezing through on away goals having been on the rack for long periods in the return leg at San Mames.

With this in mind, it might be worth investing some loose change on the draw at 9/1.

It's difficult to make any kind of case for the away win at 20/1 due to the obvious gulf in class but the layers, in their terror of Barca's brilliance, have been pushing the stalemate out to increasingly tempting proportions in recent weeks and nobody more so than Victor Chandler.

The Gibraltar-based firm were best price 7/1 about the draw at El Molinón last weekend when the Catalans' winning streak finally hit the buffers at 16 matches against Sporting Gijon.

And in spite of the potential stammering of momentum that result might create, they same firm have now gone a full two points bigger than all of their competitors on the spoils being shared once again.

The FA want the Champions League final at Wembley because they NEED the cash after spending more on the stadium than Holland/Belgium did to build/refit all their stadiums for the Euro 2000 tourney (or some ridiculous stat to that effect).

They have to move the FA Cup Final from before then or hold it at another venue because FIFA don't want the pitch having any feet on it beforehand.

Jamsiep, i didnt give it because the rules in the beginning was clear.. no abbreviations! Last time, we had a question and answer was ibrahimovic! obviously most answered ibra very rapidly and someone answered ibrahimovic only 1-2 secs later! The pt went to the guy who answered ibra 1st but obviously it was not fair to the one who typed ibrahimovic.. thats the only reason we put that rule! sorry mate but congrats for the win.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

ha! It's fine, I never saw the rule in the first place, but now you've explained it I'm fine with it all. Although it's not as if anyone else had got the question right though, so giving the abbreviation wasn't any advantage whatsoever. But rules are rules....

same but he really did choke. Didn't communicate with partner so both went in, hesitated and sure enough Tehoue or whatever his name is blew right by him. Can't make mistakes like that. That said, he'll be a great replacement to Clichy, sometimes I can't tel the difference between the two other than the fact that Gibbs likes to sit up top a bit at times and Clichy will make the run.

i hate when people pick on 1 mistake so i will retract my comment, didn't even the watch the game for starters. basically i want to say i think gibbs is overrated for the little he's actually done in his short career. for people to say he should already replace clichy is scandalous imo.
whispers in the england camp from the senior players seem to be that they really rate him. i personally think he's still done nothing in the premiership and champions league yet to merit this reputation, but i can recognise his potential.
problem is he's too good to go out on loan but not quite good enough to replace clichy. a bit of a dilemma as regualr games will only benefit him and probably make him less injury prone too.

You missed the key word "He'll". Did I say he'll replace him for the starting next week, no, and he shouldn't. But if we were in person could you tell me with a straight face that if Clichy were to suddenly drop dead, they wouldn't have a good replacement in Gibbs. I'm not talking smack, just clarifying.
Btw, going out on loan doesn't translate to being out of favor. Look at Ramsey, he's fit now and Wenger wants to play him, but it would be dumb to take out other people, so he loaned him out to Cardiff.

Sidenote: Is it suddenly trendy again in UK to use the term "scandalous"?

the thing is gibbs would never be allowed to go out on loan as he's first back up at lb. i doubt any manager would let their first back up in a position go out on loan. ramsey after his injury was way down the pecking order so rightly went out on loan

So he's fecked, not good enough to displace Clichy, too important to go out on loan. Maybe he should do a Pique and join another club.
Do anyone really know how good/bad he is? He's played a handful of games and somehow managed to get a couple of England caps. It's difficult to even put a transfer price on him.

i think he's in an unfortunate place with his dilemma. my initial point was based on a lot of gooners, including mfaulkner on here, that seem to really rate the guy. i'm personally not sure what it's based on.

Too good to go out on loan? Negatory. I'd consider him to be in the Welbeck, Cleverley band of potential. If Clichy is no.1 he should go out on loan for sure. Look what it did for Wilshere.

if clichy gets injured they really need gibbs. if cleverley got injured this season man utd have a load of centre mids or in park, giggs, nani, valencia, le parsnip loads of wingers. if welbeck got injured they have rooney berbs hernandez and owen. last year arsenal had diaby, denilson or even rosicky and nasri to join fabs and song in the middle so like the others wilshere was a different scenario

I agree with Apples but not for the reason he said exactly. Traore is already out on loan and I didn't think of that till Apple responded. If they loaned out Gibbs and Clichy was injured we'd be screwed. It would be great to loan out Gibbs, but the given situation isn't bad either. Four competitions is bound to guarantee intense playing time when he does get it. Save the odd Leyton Orient game.

that's what i mean though i'm sure wenger would much rather have gibbs to call upon than that bamby on ice sprinter traore.

Clichy can't defend. He's the main weak link in Arsenal's first XI.

                    1) Clichy is physically and mentally weak, 2) He is not tall enough or strong enough to out-muscle ANYONE, and often loses out in aerial battles
                    2) He lacks focus and often makes glaring errors at the back, leading to penalties, free-kicks and often goals.
                    3) His main asset is pace, but on making runs forward he often leaves arsenal exposed to counter-attacks down their left.
                    4) MOST worryingly for an Arsenal player his skill level is quite low - he very rarely beats a man for skill or plays 1-2s a la, A Cole, P Evra.
                    5) His creativity, crossing and vision are also a concern, he rarely produces a pass (v Barca being a clear exception) that opens up the opposition or leads to a goal
                    6) While clearly not solely responsible, Clichy's time as first choice LB has conincided with Arsenal winning nothing.
                    7) Compare and contrast his work with that of Bacary Sagna on the right, who manages to strike the correct balance of strength, resolution and aggresion whilst offering an willing, able and occasionally penetrative attacking threat.

roberto carlos too... a low centre of gravity certainly helps a full-backs agility and speed of movement.
BUT... a good full back also makes up for this by applying extra aggrssion to their game.
                    Clichy does not.

When a top class racehorse participates in a warm up event for a major prize, they very frequently do little more than is strictly necessary. Similary, I can't see Arsenal racking up a cricket score against Stoke; they'll have no need to run their race early. I reckon they'll sit on a 1 -0 lead and will only move through the gears if Stoke are silly enough to score!

If it's not Huth then it's Carew, if not Carew then Jones, if not Jones, then Shawx. They have so many of those weapons. Haven't seen the Brighton game yet, but I heard their goalie couldn't cope with the set piece threat.

Agreed. My nearest opponent has Huth and Szczesny, so I'm happy with goals going in. That Stoke set piece line up is the biggest and baddest around.

Its a tough game for Stoke, since coming up they have lost 2-0 and 4-1, their torpedo throws want phase Scezceny, he is 6 4 and brave not a weedy little Spaniard or a nervous Pole.

                            It's amazing.

Planed all my transfers now. Unlike in fpl, it's easier to plan transfers in this as players don't tend to get injured and prices don't rise/fall etc.

Going to have a slow start due to not doing many transfers but by the next day that there are 2 games in a day, I will have an average of 4 players playing every day.

This includes the last 2 days of the group stages where i will be having 8 players on satueday and 7 on sunday.

The big bad wolf comes along and blows down the straw house and eats the pigs, then they build one out of sticks and he blows that one down and eats the pigs. Then he gets to the brickhouse and huffs and puffs and blows and it doesn't fall down. He hasn't got enough breath force.

The official start time of the match, so you can make changes after seeing the toss. It's the reason I went with Sangakarra captain today. There would have been no sense in doing that if Sri Lanka were bowling first.

I've realised that I'm going to have to have a player playing in every single match of the group stages.... Makes no sense to go into a game without any players, because you would effectively be passing up the opportunity of a captain.

Ryan ten Doeschate and Tamim Iqbal are going to be mainstays in my team for that exact reason.

You shouldn't really be bragging that your club massively overcharges. Not a great thing.

Price for 2 adults and 2 children to go to City’s match today – £40,
Price for 1 adult to go to United’s match yesterday – £41

                "massively overcharges"

£40 isn't massively overcharging considering it's £30 to watch a Championship side. Hence, oh dear.

Then again, I don't have much of an idea how much tickets cost for our FA Cup game against Ipswich, for example.

But we were still selling out. In fact we were basically the only Premier League club packing the stadium for every FA Cup game.

It's £40 for an 'executive box' at crawley town on a match day.

Two ways of looking at that Soup,
                    1) Utd fans are more dedicated
                    2) Utd fans are pretty thick.

Not having a pop at Utd per se, Newcastle fans are equally gullible. Look at Sheppard and Hall taking the piss out of them for buying overpriced shirts.

Dont season ticket holders have to buy cup games at United?

If so the bulk of yesterday game was sold before the season.

Why don't you talk about how United struggle to sell out these days.

There appeared to be 1000's of empty seats at OT yesterday.. I think they always add the season ticket holders to the attendance regardless if attend or not..
