After a turbulent season which has included the shock sacking of popular manager Chris Hughton and sale of star striker Andy Carroll, Newcastle finally seem to be giving their fans something to smile about. Since their remarkable comeback in the 4-4 draw with Arsenal, the Magpies have kept consecutive clean sheets in an impressive 2-0 away victory at Birmingham and a spirited goalless draw at Ewood Park.

After their heroics on the road, Alan Pardew’s men return to St. James Park for a run of three fixtures on home soil in their next four (BOL, EVE, stk, WOL). These games will surely be targeted as crucial matches which could cement their place in the Premier League next season; they are all certainly winnable.

This key combination of good form and attractive fixtures, in addition to the fact that Newcastle players generally boast low-to-mid valuations, screams potential for Fantasy Managers. And, if you’re looking for the form guy within Alan Pardew’s squad, you need look no further than Joey Barton.

In his last four gameweeks Barton has laid on more goal opportunities, had more shots on goal and enjoyed more touches of the ball than any other player in the Newcastle midfield. Our Members can see the stats behind Barton’s recent form for themselves in the Members’ Area – they make compelling evidence in Barton’s favour.

Another appealing aspect of investment in Barton is his involvement at set-plays. Again, over the last four gameweeks, Barton has contributed the most corners in the league; he is also the principal direct/indirect free-kick and spot-kick taker at the club.

Priced at 5.0 on the FPL game, Barton is a steal and would line-up nicely alongside some of the more lavish midfield offerings, and provide a ready-made replacement for those shedding Blackpool’s Charlie Adam in the light of his suspension. For a low price option, Barton has accumulated a notable return of 101 FPL points this season. This includes 17 bonus points, 4 goals and 6 assists.

Fellow Newcastle midfielders Kevin Nolan and Jonas Gutiérrez are also worth monitoring over Newcastle’s obliging run of opponents – they could easily rival Barton for FPL returns. Nolan has been Newcastle’s top points scoring midfielder, fetching 101 points thus far, having found the back of the net on 10 occasions. Like Barton, Gutiérrez has also been in strong form and his recent supply from out wide has been nothing short of superb. Again, our Members need only check out his Distribution stats, and in particular his “Successful Crosses” over recent gameweeks, to assess his current form.

Bolton could well provide a stubborn opponent for the Magpies this weekend having kept five clean sheets in their last six matches, but even beyond gameweek 28, it’s clear that there is great potential in Alan Pardew’s midfield, with Barton arguably the leading contender.

paddy sayspaddy says

Barton to score 2 or more goals against either Bolton or Everton combined 10/1

Barton to be sent off against either Bolton or Everton 10/1

Barton to score a hat-trick against either Bolton or Everton 80/1

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Hitz my Funny Feeling Friday but a major risk... Barton probably better in that price range...

I'm taking out Cesc and RVP and have 4M in the bank, it just doesn't seem right replacing them with A Young or Silva and Rooney - it leaves me like 6M+ in the bank... I don't know - Looks strange with 6M in bank, maybe I'll get Lampard...

You won't be the only one. The way I see it if he scores he's likely to get 3 bps which would give him 10/11pts. If he only scores 1 in next 3 games he could go 11, 2, 2. That would be an average of almost 8 per gw. It only takes a pen

birminghams dgw is in jeopardy and i can always bring back johnson next week.

doubling up on evertons defence isnt exactly appealing. The fact that smalling will play 2 games and will probably be shifting him out next week anyway makes the hit a bit more bearable.

also have 6.1 mill sitting in the bank to bring back fabs.

        youve kept vdv i presume?

          This week I've done:

          Adam > Barton
          Fabs > Cahill

It's up to you, but that's what I'd do. If there's ever a time to double on Everton it's now. 4 home games in 5. Besides, with Baines you're buying a player with great attacking potential.

I'm probably going to get Baines next week if Everton have their double.

if a player had a red/orange 'i' meaning doubtful/injured/suspended ... then after that 'i' changes back to the default grey (meaning available) ... then his price does not change for the next 10 days irrespective of the transfers in/out. protection isnt always guaranteed though, meaning that the players price changes even if we'd have thought that he'd be protected.

According to the Arsenal website, the Gunners will most likely have 5 games between Feb. 27 and March 12. (This assumes they beat Leyton Orient in their second game of that run.) Of those 5 games, only 1 is an FPL fixture. With a cup final, Barcelona, and Man United in the FA Cup, I just cannot see RVP or Fabs playing any part of the Sunderland fixture on Mar. 5. Then who knows who Wenger will put our against WBA on Mar. 19, probably field a younger team to give the starters a breather. I currently have Fab and RVP and am considering transferring both out. Have I missed something?

Good point, then which one to keep? I'm leaning towards keeping RVP but wouldn't mind having Bent in my team. But I lose less selling Fabs and am struggling to find an impact mid this week. Maybe I'll just replace Adam with Young. Thanks for the input Bojan.

Adam to Young gives me 10 playing this week, and it allows me to keep Fabs and RVP. They have helped me gain ground in my mini league. Nobody else had them when I got them in and now the other cannot really afford both. If I bring Young in I may only do it for this week and bring Cahill in for the double, provided it goes ahead.

Not done this for a while but I could do with some suggestions please.

    Current team:
    Begovic (Foster)
    Kolarov Simpson Kelly Coleman
    Nani(c)
    Odem Rooney Tevez

Out: Foster, Fabs, Adam, Bentley, Djourou, VDV.

I did RVP > Rooney due to Rooney having 2 games and I strongly think RVP will be 'rested' prior to Barcelona; that and he could always have a set back, plus can bring him back in.

I have 1 freebie left but pretty much need to take a 4 point hit. Will we know more re: Cahill by tomorrow morning?

I agree – doubt we’ll get any more news on cahill before the deadline and a 4 point hit for a player who might not even play is just not worth the risk. Also, as everton could be missing so many of their influential players, are they even worth considering this week?

Adam to Barton would be a good one to use for freebie I reckon as out of those players Adam is probably the one you would be most willing to get rid of!

I am also considering shipping out VdV for Silva. VdV fitness is not great and he keeps getting these injuries I think he could score big but doubt he will make all the games especially with Spurs doing well in champs league!

I have no gk playing in GW28 week. And have Adam, VDV, Fabs, and Cahill in Midfield (I heard that Cahill took a knock at the weekend and may also be out). Also have RVP….and Berbs & O’Shea might not get a run out either.

Already I have transfered in Ode -> Tevez (A must have for GW28)

But I’m thinking also to transfer: -

    Fabs -> A Young / Mierles / Silva

    Also Stockdale -> Howard

Your advice on my team would be great…..Any other opions worth considering?
