An early Edin Dzeko brace was more than enough to see City power past their Greek Super League opponents Aris Salonika to make the last sixteen of the Europa League. They were joined buy Liverpool, who earned a 1-0 second leg victory over Sparta Prague at Anfield, thanks to a late Dirk Kuyt header. Here’s the notes from another night in Europe…

Roberto Mancini flexed the muscles of his squad by fielding all of his expensive forward line, combining Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez in attack, in a 4-3-3 formation which also included David Silva in midfield. With Aleksandar Kolarov shifting to left-back, it was a supremely attacking setup from Mancini; the City boss acknowledged that it wasn’t a tactic that he could look to maintain.

“The first half they worked together well with the ball. The second half we were tired. They need to play more games together, to get used to each other. I think they can play together sometimes….The problem comes when we don’t have the ball. If we don’t close down every situation, it could be difficult for us…We can play this formation, but not often, unless we improve.”

It seems unlikely that we will see the same lineup against Fulham at Eastlands on Sunday, with Balotelli perhaps the most likely to drop to the bench. The likes of Kolo Toure and Pablo Zabaleta could well be recalled to the defence, but it’s in midfield that Mancini has problems. Doubts over the fitness of James Milner and Nigel De Jong remain, so we may see Kolarov shifting to a left-flank role once again with Silva keeping Yaya Toure and Gareth Barry company in the middle of the park. Dzeko may well have done enough to warrant another Premier League start with last night’s brace.

City lost the imperious Vincent Kompany to a first-half hip injury. Details on the severity of the knock are scarce, but Mancini remains hopeful that his key defender will be fit to make a return on Sunday.

“We won’t know what has happened until Friday when we see what the situation is. We have a lot of injuries at the moment, so I hope it is not serious and he will be available for Sunday”

Robbed of the services of Steven Gerrard through a groin injury and Glen Johnson with an achilles problem, Kenny Dalglish included Joe Cole in a starting XI for the first time as freshened up his lineup against Sparta. Danny Wilson and Dan Agger came into the defence and, with Luis Suarez ineligible, David Ngog again led the Liverpool attack.

Martin Kelly’s attacking contribution from right-back was impressive once more – his surging runs were often accompanied by an end product, presenting several opportunities for team-mates. Kelly did however, pick up a knock in the first-half and was forced off at the break. Dan Agger and Sotorios Kyrgiakos also sustained what appeared to be minor injuries on the night; Dalglish offered this summary post-match…

“Obviously we picked up one or two knocks in the match. Martin Kelly felt a wee twinge at the top of his leg so he had to come off at half-time. Then Daniel Agger had to come off and Soto split his eye.”

With Glen Johnson a doubt for the trip to West Ham on Sunday, Kelly’s withdrawal may well have been a precaution and his Fantasy owners will be hopeful that he’ll make the starting lineup at Upton Park. Dalglish will of course have Luis Suarez back for that game, although he appeared less certain on the chances of both Gerrard and Johnson making returns….

“Glen just felt his achilles a wee bit so we left him out. It shouldn’t be too bad. We’ll just have to see. Steven is very close but we don’t know if he will be ready for Sunday. We will at least have Luis Suarez back.”

Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel, both used from the bench last night, will be expected to come back into to the back four, while Cole could well be benched once again with Maxi in line for a return if Gerrard fails to make it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Thinking about

    Fabs -> Silva
    Djourou -> Kolarov

4 point hit required. Don't know if I can trust Kolarov to play and Silva to be effective though.

      Why wouldn't Kolarov play?

City at home, I think he'll play for sure.

    Gordon/Stockdale
    Coleman/Rafael/Djourou/Foley/Simpson
    Nani/Adam/Young/Fabs/VDV
    Campbell/Torres/Van P

    Thinking of:
    Adam/Fabs/Campbell/Torres out for Arteta/Silva/Sturridge/Tevez

Not so bothered about the points hit coz I have an easy game this week but a big game against the leader in GW 29

    Thoughts please

Clever. However, what I meant is you can't see if they have taken hits for the upcoming gameweek. You can only see a rivals transfers post gameweek.

Of course you can see if they've taken a hit or not. You just look at their transfers from last week and see how many they've done this week.

if you scroll down below Team Finances on your man team page you will find Transfers (gameweek/overall). This can be seen on any other players main team page and will tell you how mnay transfers they have already made before a deadline. Simplez 🙂

I know. But once again, I'm talking PRE gameweek. IE - I can't see whether my rival has made 4 transfers this morning and taken a 12pt hit so that I can do the same.

Hi guys!I have a big dilemma in my Facebook team.I need to change Fabs and Adam to be able to field a full XI.However,I also want Berba/Rooney in my team, but you can only make 2 transfers each week in that game.
So right now,I'm toiling with the crazy idea of buying Berba and Cahill/Meireles for Odemwingie and Fabs, and fielding a 10-man team this week.I'm counting on Berba to do all the damage against Wigan itself,so that even if he's left out against Chelsea it won't matter much.Is it ok or is it sheer madness to field a 10-man team when you can help it?

Silva, Nani, Barton, A Young, Downing, Y.Toure, Cahill (maybe Bilyaletdinov....)

That'll do. Btw, who do you think SAF will play in place of Berb against Chelsea and Liverpool? Didn't Berb score a hat-trick against Liverpool last time?

He'll go 4-5-1 against Chelsea, probably Giggs and Nani flanking Rooney.

As for Liverpool, there's a chance that Berbatov could play, but Utd didn't actually play that well in the home game (and Liverpool are a much better side now) so Fergie may opt for 4-5-1 in that game too.

Because, like a good manager, he's taking other factors into account. Such as Mancini's propensity towards playing Boateng or Richards at centre half, meaning there's more chance of Zaba playing RB and therefore ensuring Kolarovs starting spot. That's why Dumbass.

GW28: Bosingwa, Fabs & RVP -> Kolarov, Cahill & Rooney (8 point hit)
      GW29: Adam & Wingie -> Gardner & Saha (4 point hit)

Good moves? Will mean I can potentially field 10 (3 doubles) in GW28 and also have 5 doubles in GW29 assuming Everton keep theirs.

I have to bring in at least one player because I'll not have a captain otherwise! Thinking of going for Swann and maybe Trott too (England play quite soon after Sunday's game as well) and going without any Indians, who don't have enough game for a while afterwards.

      R. Johnson, Walker, Rafael, Huth and Coleman.

      RJ - DGW next week.
Rafael - DGW this week perhaps.
Huth - Good fixture scoring threat.
Coleman - OOP, good run of fixtures and I got him for dirt cheap.

At a loss as to what to do. I basically need to get rid of 2 of Fabregas, Van Persie and Adam.

The sensible moves would probably be Fabs and Adam but there simply are not 2 other midfielders I want that much at the moment.

Losing RVP allows me to take a punt on Rooney this week and despite him being out of form I still prefer this to most of the midfield options available.

I know it is unlikely Fabs will play the Sunderland game but isn't it also unlikely that RVP will?

I am shipping Walcott/Fabregas/Adam and Odemwingie this week for Rooney/Cahill and two others.

All get 0 bar Odem, all have injury doubts, rotation weighing heavily over them, and I want to keep Tevez and RVP so Odem OUt Rooney seems like a no brainer.

I have the same issue with midfielders though, I may want Cahill if fit, I have Young and Nani, just not sure who else I really want.

      Myhill

      Huth, Coleman, Kelly, Simpson

      Nani(c), Cahill, Brunt

      Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez

      (Szczesny, VDV, Adam, Carr)

got 11 in ATM, without hits. If word comes that either kelly or cahill wont play, would you spend 4 points to bring in a wolves midfielder for adam? home to adamless blackpool and an additional home fixture next GW. Ohara, Jarvis, Milijas? Im not that concerned about losing adam, nothing attractive until GW33.
Even if there is no word on Kelly or Cahill before deadline, could play a wolves mid and have brunt for a sub in case someone doesnt feature.
