No, the difference is, we now have squad depth which we've lacked over the last few seasons. So everyone has been fit this season have they? Vermealen hasn't kicked a ball, Van Persie and Cesc have missed months and we are still in all 4 competitions.

Those who have Tevez, but not captain, what do we think about today?
Do we reckon that Tevez scoring would actually be detrimental to our rankings, or will enough people have captained a Utd player for Tevez scoring to still be a positive thing.
The latter I think. I am increasingly solely focused on my main private league and the chap who I'm chasing hasn't got him (c)'d either, nor do most of the others in a challenging position so I hope he scores well.

To be fair Tommy not many other countries compete at the top level in as many varied sports as England, maybe that could be part of the reason we find success hard to come by.
If anything we here in Western Europe dont compete in that many sports

But you have to admit, comparative to the vast majority of nations England participates in a huge number of sports. I can't think of many countries that have such a varied participation at the top level.

The best i meant was not winning but best at competing which i stand by and say us here in western europe are sh*t at competing at on the most part. It is the mentality that oh they do those sports let them have it etc.

Add that the 300 million other people on the sub continent who live in countries where cricket is the national sport and yo come up with about 1.3 billion. Take away those mystery 300 million who hate cricket and that's still 1 billion just in Asia.

Im going against the link he used as evidence of what he was claiming. On first hearing that 1 billion play it it sounds ludicrous and since then im against the use of dodgy links.
There maybe 1 billion who play it but saying it without evidence is pointless.
Billions/millions in these days of flexible numerals (see banking crisis) who are we to quibble - it actually wouldn't be that far off a billion I reckon.
As for is it hard to get going, well no its really easy once you have the stuff. I've lived in Ireland a long time and cricket isn't popular here, I got a load of my Irish friends (male and female) out playing it and they loved it. Great game to play on a nice summery day, playing it is infinitely better than watching it - but I think that way about football too 🙂
I'll try to arrange a cricket game with my friends. Should be good fun. Might have to fly one of you over to teach us though, and bring the silly little sticks.

Im not against cricket. Merely the use of claims which people know cant be backed up and they treat them the same as proper stats.

But we do compete at that, yes we don't win that many trophies there but we aren't a natural 'winter olympic' place in the way Canada or Scandanavia is.
There aren't many others who do as much as us.
We dont really compete. 1 medal in 1 sport out of 50 odd is poor.
And those countries in Northern Europe have as good if not better recent Football records.

We have a go despite not having any pedigree or much interest in it. Many countries dont even bother. We participate strongly in all the worlds major sports (deliberately not including baseball or american football)

But comparatively the population isn't that big, and besides my original point is that we are a jack of all trades and a master of none. If we concentrated more on one or two sports (eg Brazil) then we could become more successful over time. However that would make for a culturally less diverse country which would be undesirable.

I had to do reports etc into this when I was at Uni for health care and we dont compete well.
We are in fact like Brazil and only play a few sports. And Brazil are actually the best at their favorite sport

Well I've got the Ashes 2009, I think Codemasters produces it. It's alright, not great but you can while away the time happily enough.
