Injuries

Arsenal have sprung a late surprise by adding Robin Van Persie to their squad for Tuesday’s hugely anticipated Champions League clash with Barcelona.

The Dutch striker was previously written off by Arsene Wenger with a knee injury. The Gunners boss had stated:

“It is a ligament at the back of the knee, a tear in the ligament. It is three to four weeks, I take the short delay because I am an optimist but it could be four. As well it is the international break during that period so whether it is three or four [weeks], for us it is the same.”

With this earlier news that Van Persie was set to be out on the sidelines for a lengthy spell, a massive 162,555 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers reluctantly shipped him out during gameweek 29. But with the striker now in the squad to face Barcelona and Gameweek 30 not until 19 March, one would presume that we will see him back earning Fantasy returns ahead of schedule.

This news will be greeted with elation from Arsenal fans and Van Persie-owning Fantasy Managers alike. The forward has been in blistering form in 2011 since returning from injury, finding the back of the net 10 times in just 7 Premier League outings. He has also made 5 assists and picked up 15 FPL bonus points, making him a must have for the majority of Managers. He is clearly a crucial asset for the Gunners, perhaps best illustrated by the 0-0 stalemate against Sunderland on Saturday.

Before Fantasy Managers hastily transfer back the Dutchman, or indeed gloat about the fact that that he may have been retained, it is worth considering that if Arsenal draw with Manchester United in the FA Cup this weekend, then their gameweek 30 fixture with West Brom will be postponed to accommodate the replay. Therefore, Arsenal could yet draw a blank in gameweek 30.

Will Van Persie actually play against Barca though? The article confirming his place in the squad mentioned that the 19-man group will be cut to 18, ahead of Tuesday’s game. Could Van Persie be the player to drop out? Is Wenger playing mind games with Pep Guardiola? Is Van Persie actually anywhere near full fitness?

We will have answers within 24-hours, while the outcome of Saturday’s Cup tie at Old Trafford will decide whether Van Persie will ultimately have the opportunity to make an early return to Fantasy action.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

      Yes he will.

the Barce game will make or break their season and VP only has a knock on his knee. Unless arsenal want to crash out of the 2nd cup in 7 days they'll play him. If they win, it will give them confidence to take on Utd at the weekend.

      VP will be starting IMO.

As far as FPL is concerned, i'd wait and see though, he could easily get injured again or have a blank in GW30.

No, not desperation. With RVP they have a realistic chance of knocking Barca out. Without him, it's not very likely. They've gotta score at the Nou Camp.

Given RVP's lengthy injury record, it's a huge risk.

Although when they have a genuine chance of winning the League for the first time in a fair amount of time, you do not particularly want your best striker out for a lengthy period of time in a game, where winning is a bit of a longshot and winning the whole tournament is an even bigger longshot. Too risky, if I was the manager I would not risk it.

Tricky balance, because if you can get past Barca then there's no reason you can't go all the way.

This is Arsenal's best chance of winning the CL (and the PL) for a while now.

Plus you have to consider the knock-on effect of another bad result. Whereas Man United often bounce back from a set of poor results, Arsenal often buckle under the pressure.

I personally wouldn't risk it because, like you, I think they've a much better chance of winning the PL than the CL.

Well you don't pass the 1st part with your rank. 30 is a decent score. If it's in the top 60+ for those outside the top 448 then you get in. You would probably want another 50 points by the end of GW to have a better chance.

Same upbringing as Zidane, perhaps he will get that 'switch' in his head Zidane got at the age of 24, that made him want to work harder every day.

Most players stop developing at 24, Zidane carried on. I hope Nasri does too..

at last someone with a comment that makes sense.

anyway, yeh i think nasri has the potential to be great. i started following him when he was at marseille, he showed alot more skill there. when he did an interview at the age of about 14 the interviewer asked him if he could be as great as zidane. he replied with 'i respect zidane too much to be compared with him, he is an amzing player and i hope to be nearly as half as good as him'. samir has a great attitude at even such a young age. i think he is the best role model any young player could have. i rest my case

Realistically the prem is within arsenals grasp. The cl has top class opposition all the way to the final from now on. Being knocked out tomorrow maybe the best thing for arsenal (and us lot) :p

Spelling is an integral part of grammar, which defines proper word usage. Some rules of grammar pertain specifically to spelling, such as plurals and possessives.

Desperation tactics from Wenger I see - all so he can say he beat Barca "the right way".

After seeing United linked with Pastore (again), I decided to spend much of the day checking him out (courtesy of 8-10 minute highlights of some of his games).

He looks promising, an excellent passer. However he seems to move around a bit much and rarely stays in position. I doubt he'd work in a 4-4-2 system.

I can see him going to Barca.
