January’s loss of Steven Pienaar to Tottenham has presented David Moyes with something of a conundrum; given that the club’s well-known financial problems are limiting player acquisitions, who -within his current playing staff- is best suited to take over that left midfield slot so previously well-suited to the South African?

Everton’s last three league games have seen Moyes try a different solution each time: Diniyar Bilyaletdinov in a 2-0 defeat away to Bolton, Leon Osman in the 2-0 home win over Sunderland and, last Saturday, Mikel Arteta stepped into the breach for the club’s 2-1 win at Newcastle. Having had a fairly indifferent season this time round, Arteta really looked the part playing in front of Leighton Baines on the left flank, and it will be intriguing to see if he keeps his place there or whether Moyes moves him back to his usual, deeper, central midfield berth.

With Baines driving forward from left-back, the left midfield position is afforded more attacking license than perhaps any slot across the Everton midfield and a player of Arteta’s intelligence can really utilise this to great effect. As this “Average Position” map shows, Arteta (10) was actually playing further forward than any starting Everton player at the weekend, ahead of Louis Saha (8) and Jermaine Beckford (16).

Compare that to the previous game, where Arteta played in the centre of midfield. This “Average Position” map shows him inside his own half, playing deeper than Phil Neville (18), the right-back. Not what they need from their most creative player, really.

These Passing Heatmaps illustrate just how different Arteta’s role was on Saturday compared to the previous game at Goodison. Although he made more passes in the centre of midfield than out left (53 compared to 43), Arteta played a huge 43% of them inside his own half against Sunderland, with 24% coming in the final third of the pitch. Compare that to the Newcastle game, where a mere 19% of his passes came in the Everton half and a whopping 49% in the final third, and it’s fair to say that this role clearly suits his attacking sensibilities far greater and makes Everton more of a threat overall.

Finally, a look at the Everton pattern of distribution over the past two games. A glance at the Average Position maps above show that Osman’s (21) position against Sunderland was similar to Arteta’s in the Newcastle game, but these Passing Heatmaps show a distinct difference in the team’s passing in the two games:

Down the left flank in the Sunderland game, Everton made 14% of all passes inside their own half. Against Newcastle, this figure dropped down to 8%, and, as the Average Position maps above show, Baines was able to play further forward as a result, which suggests that playing Arteta in left midfield is also beneficial to him, too.

In the two zones just over the halfway line on each flank, the percentages are revealing. The Sunderland game saw Everton make 8% (5 + 3) of all passes there and 13% (8+5) of all passes in the two zones on the right, but at St James’ Park, there was a marked difference; the left side doubled to 16% (7+9), while the passes on the right dropped to less than a third, down to 4% (2+2).

All in all, Arteta looked reinvigorated at the weekend. If Moyes keeps him in this new position, it’s great news for those eyeing him up with Everton’s kind upcoming run of games on the horizon (FUL, AVL, wol, BLA, mun, wig ). Those Fantasy Managers who currently have him can watch on in anticipation as Everton host Birmingham tonight in the second part of their double gameweek, hoping for more of the same. For those who don’t have him, it’s a case of holding their breath and hoping his contribution is minimal and that Saturday’s events were a one-off.

top 10 Club Sides ever compiled by skysports

Barcelona delivered another exhilarating demonstration of footballing greatness on Tuesday evening to beat Arsenal 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League.
The Gunners squad is loaded with class and they tend to dominate any opponent they come across, yet at Camp Nou they were made to look distinctly ordinary as they were dismantled by a rampant Barca.
But where does Pep Guardiola's side rank on the all-time list? How would they fare against the finest that history has to offer?
Comparing teams from different eras is an impossible task but every now and again there are those that stand out like Barca.
Skysports.com here trawls back through the ages to pick out, in no particular order, ten of the best.

    Barcelona - 2010/11
Let us start with the team of the moment and the remarkable feature of Barcelona's game is the style in which they play. Guardiola has at his disposal some of the most gifted passing technicians ever to have taken the field, most notably Xavi and Andres Iniesta, who allow Barca to control possession to an extent that has never been seen before. They are almost faultless with the ball and then when they do lose the ball they are relentless in their pressing, while up front there is the prolific David Villa and the majestic Lionel
Messi, already one of the greatest players ever.

    Manchester United - 1998/99
Of course the best way to measure greatness is to look at how many trophies a team has won come the end of the season. It is all well and good playing beautiful football and then missing out on the silverware, as Barcelona did in last season's Champions League after losing to Inter Milan. The Manchester United of the late 20th century managed to combine an attractive approach with the never-say day attitude required to pick up the biggest prizes. Having already claimed the Premier League and FA Cup in 1999, United claimed an unprecedented Treble by memorably snatching two late goals in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

    AC Milan - 1989/90
Eyebrows were raised in 1987 when the inexperienced Arrigo Sacchi was appointed Milan manager, but within three years they had won the European Cup not once but twice. Sacchi assembled a phenomenal side capable of taking apart just about anyone, with defensive steel allied to attacking flair. Throughout his first-choice starting XI there were world-class stars, including Dutch trio Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard, as well as the likes of Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini. A stunning 5-0 victory over Real Madrid is still regarded as one of the most amazing performances of all time.

    Real Madrid - 1956-60
It is difficult to imagine any team winning five successive European Cups in the modern era, even the great Barcelona, but that is precisely what Spanish giants Real achieved in the late 1950s. Nobody else on the continent could compete as legends such as Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas helped Real sweep aside everyone in their path.

    River Plate - 1940s
Perhaps a surprise entry to younger readers, but the River Plate team of the 1940s is widely considered one of the greatest ever. It was not always the case that South American superstars would journey to Europe to ply their trade and the Argentine league was particularly strong during this period. River Plate were still able to dominate with four titles in a decade as the likes of Adolfo Pedernera and a young Di Stefano shone, while some old timers say they were the first exponents of total football, 30 years before the Dutch.

    Liverpool 1977/78
Venturing back into slightly more recent territory, and the late 1970s were glory years for Liverpool as they retained the European Cup. Phil Thompson, Alan Hansen, Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish have shown in more recent times they possess sharp football minds and back in their playing days they proved far too good on the pitch for most of their rivals. An honourable mention must also go to the Nottingham Forest team of the same era, who claimed back-to back European titles the following two years under the great Brian Clough.

    Celtic -1966/67
Celtic's class of 1967 would later become known as the 'Lisbon Lions' after claiming European glory in the Portuguese capital courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan. It was the first time a British team had won the competition and a fantastic achievement for Scottish football, with every member of the team born within 30 miles of Glasgow. Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers grabbed the goals against Inter as Jock Stein's side, playing an extremely positive brand of football, won every competition they entered that season.

    Ajax - 1994/5
Ajax have had two great teams in their history, one in the early 1970s and another in the mid 90s. The Dutchmen lifted the Champions League trophy in 1995 after going through the competition without losing a single game and, having produced a host of exciting young talents such as Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars and the De Boer brothers, a sustained spell at the top of the game looked to be in the offing. However, the Bosman ruling hit them hard and led to the squad being broken up dramatically over the next couple of years.

    Real Madrid - 2001/2
A second appearance in our list for Real Madrid, who made it their project to bring in one of the best players on the planet each year during the 'Galacticos' era. They never quite succeeded in world domination but were just about unbeatable at their best, with the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos and Raul in their ranks. It all came together in 2002 as Zidane's magnificent volley sealed Champions League success against Bayer Leverkusen.

    Arsenal 2003/4
Unlike the other examples in our countdown, this Arsenal side did not come out on top in European competition. However, their domestic achievements still make them worthy of a place after going through the entire Premier League season unbeaten, to become known as the 'Invincibles'. Playing with a perfect balance between style and steel that they have never been quite able to replicate, the Gunners cantered to the title as Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp and co sparkled in attack and the likes of Sol Campbell, Kolo Toure and Ashley Cole kept things tight at the back.

I like the recent United team when they had the ridiculous attack of Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo and also Mourinhnos Chelsea simply because they raised the bar across the Premier League to a new much higher level.

Real Madrid 1956-60 for me. Not that I lived back then of course but I've read quite a lot about them and 5 straight European Cups says it all.

Oh, and it's also why the expression is "They're hardly Real Madrid of the 50s", and not any of those other sides!

Because in a move that closely parallels the unforgettable movie "She's The Man" Nani isn't actually Nani. The Nani we know this season is actually Nani's sister Nelly. (hence why 'he' is suddenly good this season).
Nani isn't happy that SAF prefers Nelly despite her girlish acts on the pitch and wishes to blow the whole secret.

Captained Harbhajan for the third time, and he's taken one wicket in those three games combined! I can't seem to ever pick the right captain when I have multiple players in the same game.

Gutted when he managed to concede 9 off his final over, taking his economy rate above 3 (he had bowled 9 overs for 22). Cost me 40 bleedin' points!

I know i saw that, unlucky. Exactly the same happened to Neshra, was on 2.5ish economy, 1 wicket and 1 maiden then went for 11 off his last over!

Grrrr, and Khan got a wicket with his last ball and finished with an econ of exactly 3.

Could of been so lucky, but instead was unlucky. Do you think 1200 pts off 1st is unassailable?

Yeah I reckon so, but have absolutely no idea how the knock-out stages will play out. Need to have a proper look at the rules regarding transfers to work out how best to play it.

I reckon a few of the people above you have gone mad with the transfers early doors, and that you should overtake them as the group stages progress.

Just had a look at some of the prizes on offer, they are so much better than FPL!!

has to be him. when the opposition knows exactly where he's going to bowl yet still get bowled it's hard to ignore. i think he'll be quite expensive against the better sides but zimbabwe don't look like a top side, i'm sure coventry will be more than happy to give away his wicket yet again. even the zimbabwe managament confessed the side struggle against pace.

          They are both world class.
Depends what team they are in as they currently suit different playing styles.
At Chelsea I would say Drogba. But a more technical team, e.g Barcelona I would say Torres.

not sure about bent...could even go for a cheaper striker depending on fixtures...e.g. doyle
