A senseless dismissal for Robin Van Persie. A seething response from Arsene Wenger. A public apology from Cesc Fabregas. Beyond all the noise, it’s difficult to deny the quality of Lionel Messi and Barcelona, as Arsenal were again beaten in the Nou Camp to end another Champions League campaign.

Robin Van Persie’s inclusion in the Arsenal lineup was a cause for optimism. With 56 minutes gone in a compelling encounter, that was to melt away as the Dutchman provided the pivotal moment for all the wrong reasons. The red card shown to Van Persie was of course ridiculously harsh – although it must be said that his earlier booking for a hand in the face of Dani Alves, a flashpoint stirred by sheer frustration, was folly on Van Persie’s part given the intensity of the match. While referee Massimo Busacca arguably “killed the game”, the spectacle of Barcelona ruthlessly dismantling Arsenal’s ten-men was still worthy of admiration.

Fantasy Managers will again be concerned of how another key defeat will impact on Arsenal’s season. The fact that one refereeing decision proved so crucial could provide consolation; Wenger has not surprisingly taken every opportunity to focus the actions of the referee, rather than any of his team’s failings on the night.

Van Persie certainly failed to make an impression in his 56 minutes. He was not alone. The same could be said of Cesc Fabregas who returned from injury to make a muted contribution – significant in the main for his errant back-heel which led to Lionel Messi’s masterful finish for the opening goal. It also led to a public apology from Fabregas via Twitter…

“Great support from the arsenal fans. I take full blame for the result tonight. One of the worst moments of my life. I apologise.”

Arsenal’s next opponents are United in the FA Cup. Saturday’s Old Trafford tie will decide whether the Gunners will then face at trip to West Brom in gameweek 30. We need a positive result for either side to ensure that. Should the West Brom trip remain intact, then Wenger will surely be looking to get his title ambitions back on track by fielding his big guns at the Hawthorns. His lineup at Old Trafford will be interesting. On last night’s evidence both Van Persie and Fabregas have work to do on the training ground; the break for the FA Cup should hand them the time to regain sharpness to threaten further Fantasy returns once we resume gameweek action.

Van Persie’s return to fitness confines both Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner, who wasted the opportunity to write himself into Arsenal folklore thanks to a heavy first touch late on last night, to cameo roles. The return of Fabregas meanwhile will offer slight concern to those who turned attentions to Samir Nasri – the Frenchman will surely remain a key figure for Arsenal’s run-in but his role at set-plays will likely diminish. Some rotation with Andrey Arshavin, however infrequent, could also be a factor.

The Gunners could also be without keeper Wojciech Szczesny. Wenger confirmed that the Pole suffered a dislocated finger in the first-half last night and will be assessed later this week. Manuel Almunia’s showing in the Nou Camp will surely put him back in favour and he could now stake a claim for the number one spot for the run-in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm thinking of bring in Welbeck for Saha which allows me to remove Walcott for Lampard. To do this I'll have to take a 4 point hit because otherwise my money won't stretch.

    Team's linked above.

tasty shot from Welbeck at the weekend and he hit great form before the injury. Re 4 pt hit, it depends whether you think lamps will score 4 more than the alternative who would have to play.

I'm more concerned over his price rise which will occur, these two transfers leave me with 0 in the bank.

My other option is to take Nani out (loosing 1 mil) but have Carroll upfront. Quite a bit riskier but it does have potential.

I have Lamps and I think he's worth keeping now.

Van Persie is all the Arsenal offence I need. I like the Carroll shout as well. Meireles' service is pretty good so I think Carroll will get lots of goal and assist opportunities.

I agree. Lampard is on one of those runs. He will be a juggernaught of points. Depending on injuries I'm contemplating a 4pt hit to get him in .

I'll probably ditch Nani and another mid for Lamps/OHara.

You have an easier choice than me. I'd ditch Nasri and Berbs for Lamps and cheap striker if I was you.

not sure yet. May do a gradual transfer cheap with him coming in the following week.

But as he is captain material that week a bold 4pt move to get him in may not be a bad thing. I see Chelsea performing well against a defensively minded city side, with Lampard likely to settle things in the absence of Torres and Drogba's goals.

The smart people this week already got him in....I'm keen to be at least half as smart as them and get him in soon.

      I would get rid IMO.

That injury would atleast keep him out for the next premiership game. Also i think, with valencia back, and also park coming back. Nani may get reduced pitch time when he does return, regardless of the fact that he's our most potent attacking force.

In summary Valencia should be back to full match fitness by the time nani returns, and this could see nani move to the left, where he would be less effective.

Besides it's the time of the season to take a few risks now. live a little

hmm good arguement, but i would have to disagree

like you said nani is uniteds most potent attacking threat, and they arent cruising many games these days, they need him back when they can get him

i see nani surviving most games too
        his competition for places are
a guy coming back from long term injury, have to be slowly settled in and
an old man, giggsy cant play every game and is more likely an impact sub when all 4 are fully fit

as for park, he is used in the opposite tactic to nani, so they should share a lot of game time, one hard working on 1 wing the other attack minded on the wing 2.

so the way i see it nani will play most games with the others sharing

obviously nani will be rested the odd game, but in the run in, very few IMO

It's easy to say the result wouldn't have been any different last night if RVP wasn't sent off.

Ultimately if Arsenal scored one more, or conceded one less they would have gone through (or to extra time). I would fancy their chances of doing either of those much more with 11 men and RVP on the pitch.

You can say based on what you saw last night that it never looked likely but you're basing that on the second half that you saw - without RVP.

I'm not saying i think Arsenal would have gone through - the likelihood is that they wouldn't. But it's impossible to say with any confidence because you can't comment on the game you didn't watch based on the game you did watch. Of course we saw 56 minutes of Arsenal create nothing, but it would have only taken one goal - Arsenal were basically robbed of the possibility with the sending off.

It's not relevant to the point i made though is it?

Barcelona were by far the better team over the two games - no question that they deserved to go through imo.

I just don't agree with the logic of saying the sending off didn't make a difference

Tenuous at best. You've obviously missed the point i was making because similarly if that Messi goal had stood then a different game would have played out - one we didn't see so can't comment on.

But while we're there don't forget the penalty that Barca should have had for the Diaby foul last night.

Massive difference anyway imo, that is an innocent mistake, thought he was offside when he wasnt. The sending off he weighed up what he did and dished out a punishment based on that - it's much more calculated, but they were all poor decisions.

the sending off was a very poor decision obviously, but it wouldnt have been such an issue if rvp just got a yellow for it (i.e. if he wasnt already on a yellow). and guess why he already was on a yellow? all his fault.

Work incentive is cultural. The best examples are USA, Hong Kong/Singapore and 'new' china.

All come about from the same conditions. Freedom, which implies individuality and leads to self-esteem which leads to ambition and work ethic.

I was thinking of getting Bale in for Etherington, but with Bale's fitness still a doubt am considering O'Hara. Would also free up some cash for some planned future moves. Wolves fixtures also look quite good. Does this seem a good move?

people seem to be proposing silly transfers! i.e.

VDV: we dont know if he is fit!

Torres: possibly the most out of form player!

Luis (possibly): Chelsea cant keep clean sheets and he looks good for a few cards.

    Carroll: NO guarantee of starting

    Get a grip people

I've got 2 of them, VDV will have 10 days after the game tonight, he MUST be fit but we'll see.

Luiz might be in with a chance of scoring as well as clean sheets, hence people choosing walker for the same reason.

lol @ in my opinion obv 🙂

        Not all are silly.

Carroll - cheap for a Liverpool forward, if he doesnt start the next game, surely will the following.

Luis - after the man city game has a good run of fixtures, possibly a goal in him. Great price too.

luiz: chelsea can keep clean sheets, have great fixtures and he seems to have goals/assists/bps in him and is cup tied for europe
carroll: agreed, looks good from gw34 if starting though

I think you have over-estimated the amount of thought that goes into my team. I hadn't even considered that they play each other.

0-0 would work, unless Saha decides he wants another 5 goals, which would also be fine.

I imagine it will be 1-1 with none of my players scoring or assisting.

If he gets through the next 7 days unscathed then I'm thinking of getting VdV back. And Adam, too.

A lot depends on the Man Utd Arsenal cup game this weekend though. If there's no Arsenal or Man Utd games in gw30 then most people's transfer plans will change. Otherwise, Rooney and Van Persie will be high on peoples' radar this gw.

That's why its weird that Rooney is going up in price tonight, loads of people transferring him in today.

        Its a parody:

Manager Arsene Wenger watched his team’s most glamorous route to disappointment pulled from their grasp during their 3-1 defeat at the Camp Nou, ensuring fans will have to rely on domestic failure for the rest of the season.

“Losing in the Champions League final is the dream of every Arsenal fan,” said Wenger after the game.

“But now we will have to focus on our mission to lose every domestic competition in order to make up for tonight’s slightly premature disappointment.”

“I am sure our fans are distraught, but myself and the players will be working hard until the end of the season to bring them the thrill of falling at the final hurdle yet again.”

“Hopefully we can take the league challenge all the way to the final game before we capitulate, and there’s still the FA Cup to lose.”

Right, even though i'm 200+ ahead of my rival who absolutely hammered me this GW (23-71 to be precise) I have 3 to play tonight to his none in the hope that Coleman and Zigic play a decent part. Hoping for a 0-0 to be honest, fetch me some dignity in my score this GW 😉

GW30: free transfer Berbatov > Rooney

    How's this look gents?

    Foster
    Djourou Coleman Vidic Huth
    A.Young Meireles Arteta
    Rooney Zigic Tevez

    Gordon Barton Kolarov Nani

If India win this without too many fireworks from the batsmen surely Zaheer Khan bags the MOTM award?

any score above 50 gives the motm to the batsman. cricket is largely biased towards batsmen, unfortunately.
