A senseless dismissal for Robin Van Persie. A seething response from Arsene Wenger. A public apology from Cesc Fabregas. Beyond all the noise, it’s difficult to deny the quality of Lionel Messi and Barcelona, as Arsenal were again beaten in the Nou Camp to end another Champions League campaign.

Robin Van Persie’s inclusion in the Arsenal lineup was a cause for optimism. With 56 minutes gone in a compelling encounter, that was to melt away as the Dutchman provided the pivotal moment for all the wrong reasons. The red card shown to Van Persie was of course ridiculously harsh – although it must be said that his earlier booking for a hand in the face of Dani Alves, a flashpoint stirred by sheer frustration, was folly on Van Persie’s part given the intensity of the match. While referee Massimo Busacca arguably “killed the game”, the spectacle of Barcelona ruthlessly dismantling Arsenal’s ten-men was still worthy of admiration.

Fantasy Managers will again be concerned of how another key defeat will impact on Arsenal’s season. The fact that one refereeing decision proved so crucial could provide consolation; Wenger has not surprisingly taken every opportunity to focus the actions of the referee, rather than any of his team’s failings on the night.

Van Persie certainly failed to make an impression in his 56 minutes. He was not alone. The same could be said of Cesc Fabregas who returned from injury to make a muted contribution – significant in the main for his errant back-heel which led to Lionel Messi’s masterful finish for the opening goal. It also led to a public apology from Fabregas via Twitter…

“Great support from the arsenal fans. I take full blame for the result tonight. One of the worst moments of my life. I apologise.”

Arsenal’s next opponents are United in the FA Cup. Saturday’s Old Trafford tie will decide whether the Gunners will then face at trip to West Brom in gameweek 30. We need a positive result for either side to ensure that. Should the West Brom trip remain intact, then Wenger will surely be looking to get his title ambitions back on track by fielding his big guns at the Hawthorns. His lineup at Old Trafford will be interesting. On last night’s evidence both Van Persie and Fabregas have work to do on the training ground; the break for the FA Cup should hand them the time to regain sharpness to threaten further Fantasy returns once we resume gameweek action.

Van Persie’s return to fitness confines both Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner, who wasted the opportunity to write himself into Arsenal folklore thanks to a heavy first touch late on last night, to cameo roles. The return of Fabregas meanwhile will offer slight concern to those who turned attentions to Samir Nasri – the Frenchman will surely remain a key figure for Arsenal’s run-in but his role at set-plays will likely diminish. Some rotation with Andrey Arshavin, however infrequent, could also be a factor.

The Gunners could also be without keeper Wojciech Szczesny. Wenger confirmed that the Pole suffered a dislocated finger in the first-half last night and will be assessed later this week. Manuel Almunia’s showing in the Nou Camp will surely put him back in favour and he could now stake a claim for the number one spot for the run-in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Moral dilemma:

There'd been a letter floating around the kitchen for a couple of months addressed to a previous tenant here. Before lobbing it I was nosey and opened it. Turns out to be a £50 gift voucher for M&S.

    What would you do?

Technically you've erred by opening someone else's mail, which I've been told before is something you should never do even if you are the new occupant.

If I get stuff for other people now I just return it back to the sender, unopened, with a note on the back saying 'no longer at this address'.

So, realistically, now that you've opened someone else's mail your options are fairly limited, aren't they?

I'm sure you'll enjoy spending the vouchers though.

Have to say, the one thing holding me back at the moment is that it was a gift (maybe a grandad to his gradndaughter, hard to tell) rather than something straight from M&S. Just don't that if I came clean, would M&S refund the original cardholder with the money? Don't know what their policy on giftcard refunds is. If they're going to bin it anyway, then I may as well use it. Otherwise, I would feel bad about it.

I like to make a return and win my mates mini league in a george forman-esque fashion (ive won our mini league every year ive entered) every couple of seasons but i think i may finally retire for good this season. Im moving house in the summer and going back to uni e.t.c so it just seems like the right time

Wish id saved the WC for times like this. Team is f**ked. Cant see where im going to score big in the next few weeks.

50 points ahead in mini-league, rivals have similar teams.

What do i do? make my own moves and try extend my lead, or wait and see whether they bring in lampard etc, and then match that?

Zigic in was a disaster, I have coleman, kolorov and barton aswel who im not sure about?

with a 50 point lead you don't have to do anything drastic, but the same rule applies now as it did earlier in the season, forget about matching rivals, just pick the 11 you think will score most every week.

You can afford a few hits along the way with that lead but it is the kindof lead which can be turned over in one week if your captain gets you a 4 and the other has a Defoe 5 or Lampard 4 kindof week.

Steady as she goes basically, Zigic is grand for the bench, Barton is apparently back and fit and is grand for the bench too, Kolaroz and Coleman are gone from my team pretty soon though.

I just did Nani > Lampard. Cost me £1.1M, as I bought Nani at the lowest price of 7.9. I know Nani may not miss too much play time, but I want a differential and Lamps is the only player capable of outscoring Nani, now that he's finding form. But still, 1.1M is a massive hit for one transfer. What's the biggest money drop you guys have ever taken, for one transfer?

Afternoon guys, Safari froze last night on my iphone, so I activated a 'Debug Console' which is at the top of all Safari pages now. It usually says '3 Errors' or something along those lines.

Anyone know if it's any good/necessary?

aslong as u keep track of every bet u do and look at patterns etc then its fine to bet bigger if u have the cash available

ie i bet alot on bristol city as thats who i support, towards the middle of last season i blew £200 backing them in a month so i stopped. only just started backing them again the last few weeks since r striker returned and made around £350 in 4 games

This is pretty important. You definitely want to track your bets so you can see what is most profitable for you. It's often surprising when you see the bets you should really avoid doing.

I've certainly found that when I've gone on a feeling rather than with my head then I'm far more likely to lose.

also when u bet on a game because its live and u can watch it u will look at the markets and pick a bet for teh sake of it to give u interest. there r much better bets around that you cant watch but u choose the live game and end up losing money

Just a some thoughts in reply to people who say, oh this game's all luck.

    1. It's possible that you could set up a team in GW1, never touch it and end up winning the whole thing, since Fantasy Football is essentially a multiple choice competition. The right answer is there if you pick it. Odds of achieving this very small.

    2. Experience of mini leagues would say that a person with good FPL knowledge who updates their team will almost always finish ahead of a person with no knowledge who updates their team. And both will triumph over someone who never changes their team.

    3. While it's true that a rare person might be outrageously lucky (eg the current leader), for the average person their ranking is a true reflection of their success or otherwise, give or take a few hundred or thousand places!

Yeah this has been discussed a few times. My own opinion is that the game is a fair bit more luck than skill, as you have no control whatsoever of the outcome. You can pick a brilliant differential from your own research and you can be dead right that he's amazing- but if he hits the post 3 times instead of scoring a hattrick it counts for nothing. If your rivals all unthinkingly have Mr Big Bum, the most famous footballer in the conutry who flukily bums in two, then you're screwed.

All you can do is shift the odds in your favour.

I am of the very firm view that this game is 70% luck, and this isn't coming from someone with a bad FPL ranking (fell from 12,000th to 20,000th odd this week) blaming his "misfortune" on luck, I agree with MnL, but this debate always divides on here!
