Liverpool have confirmed that Steven Gerrard is set for a four week spell on the sidelines. The announcement comes following consultation with a specialist which led to surgery on his troublesome groin.

In Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms, this will come as a blow to Gerrard’s 6.8% ownership as the instrumental midfielder looks set to potentially miss at least the next two Premier League fixtures (BOL whm). The skipper will also sit out next Thursday’s crunch Europa League second leg fixture with Braga; Liverpool trail 1-0 from last night’s first leg.

Liverpool’s spot kicks will now be up for grabs in Gerrard’s absence. After scoring a memorable hat-trick against Manchester United last weekend, Dirk Kuyt may be at the front of the queue having already assumed duties this season. The Dutchman has been a key figure in Liverpool’s turn in fortune over the last few months and, with Gerrard out of action, holds plenty of potential. Luis Suarez may yet have something to say when it comes to spot-kick duty, the Uruguayan will also be looking to pick up direct free-kicks – it was his effort from distance which led to Kuyt’s hat-trick goal against United.

Gerrard’s setback comes at a time when new signing Andy Carroll is in line to make his full debut for the club, following his £35 million pound move from Newcastle. Carroll’s influence as a target man was seen briefly in his substitute appearance during last night’s game with Braga. Kenny Dalglish will be frustrated at the timing of these events – Liverpool are surely set to miss Gerrard’s delivery, which would be a perfect compliment to Carroll’s aerial dominance in the box.

Injuries to FPL midfield favourites are now mounting up, leaving Fantasy Managers searching for replacements. Gerrard joins an already overflowing list which includes Tim Cahill, Cesc Fabregas, Nani, Theo Walcott and Mikel Arteta amongst others. The likes of Kuyt, Samir Nasri and the Villa contingent of Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Marc Albrighton are set to pick up further interest as a result, while Frank Lampard’s recent resurgence could well see renewed interest.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

i dont understand all the carroll love atm

hes just back from a long lay off and also has to settle into a new team

newcastle used him as teh focal point upfront launching balls into the box for him to attack any chance they got, liverpool dont play that way and itll take a little time for them and him to adapt

I think I agree with you.
Liverpool aren't a long ball team and play with no natural wingers.
Unless they switch GJ up to a winger I guess.

Theirs a fair chance when Kelly is back we'll go back to 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 giving the width again to supply Carroll, only thing is i dont no who he would drop when everyone is fit from what i would see our midfield & strike force being if we playe 4 at the back:

          ---Lucas Gerrard---
          Kuyt Merieles Suarez
          ------Carroll------

He would have to drop one of the above to play wing backs, theirs a lot of waiting and seeing to be done

He scored a lot from set pieces with his head, but his general play is fine when it's on the ground. Wouldn't call him a longball player.

dont get me wrong hes more than capable of fitting in and doing well in any team but hes going to have to adapt to a new system, add to the fact hes just back to fitness and liverpools fixtures arent easy i think its a case of wait and see at first

Liverpool having Suarez has tempted me into getting Carroll. I can see him setting up plenty of chances on a plate, and wouldn't have bothered if not for him. Decent price as well, opens up a lot of other doors.

It's a little gamble, really. I'm way down the rankings enough for it not to bother me too much, and I need to take a risk in one or two minileagues. Not the best fixtures at all, especially being away with Liverpool's record, but he did alright against those teams at Newcastle.

Bit of Charlton bias, and the fact I never saw Le Tissier "live", Bent is the best penalty taker I've seen.

Madness that Young gets the nod.

i wouldn't say he's in the cantona and le tissier calibre of penalty takers but he has to be better than ashley young. young only scores when the keeper goes the wrong way. a good penalty taker scores even when the keeper guesses right

Using my Wildcard to set me up for the final run in!

    Huth > Luiz
    Coleman > Djourou
    Barton > Wilshere
    Nasri >Lampard
    Arteta > Albrighton
    Rooney > Van Persie
    Odemwingie > Carroll

    Leaving me with:

    Foster(Begovic)
    Djourou, Vidic, Kolarov, Luiz (Evatt)
    Lampard,Wilshire,Meireles(Nani)(Albrighton)
    RvP,Carrol,Tevez

Seem ok? and as im using my WC, FA cup or champions league injuries wont hurt too much

I think any WC team needs Adam in it... 4 home games in a row after GW31...

I wouldnt have Wilshere personally... sure he's a great player but not a great fantasy player... he wont get you many points...

I also think your defense is way too expensive... think about Bramble/Bardsley/Walker... they all have a great run in and it gives you an option to strengthen midfield or attack...

      Hope that helps...
