Arsene Wenger has been having a tough time of late. With Arsenal battling on four fronts there was talk about this “being their year” and the first trophy to adorn the Emirates Stadium cabinet seemed like it could finally be on it’s way.

A week or two later and Arsenal have been knocked out on three fronts and their charge for the fourth, and perhaps most important, title on offer this season [The Premier League] has taken a major blow. Arsene Wenger has confirmed the loss of Johan Djourou for the remainder of the season with a dislocated shoulder picked up in a collision with Bacary Sagna during the 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford (more on the game as whole in the notes to follow) tonight in the FA Cup.

“[He has a] dislocated shoulder. His season is over”.

With their main rivals Manchester United still fighting on three fronts Arsenal would have hoped to have a fully fit squad to concentrate their efforts on the title alone but the loss of Djourou at this crucial point, on top of Wojciech Szczesny damaging his finger and Cesc Fabregas straining his hamstring once more this last week, is something which cannot be understated.

The Swiss centre-back missed all but 29 minutes of the 2009/10 season and ever since his return in the Autumn of this one he has shored up an Arsenal defence that has already been sorely missing Thomas Vermaelen. His record of 11 clean sheets in the 15 starts made for Arsenal this season (with only 4 goals conceded) speaks for itself.

The shaky combination of Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci will be back on display for the Gunners for the time being and 6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers will be ruing the grave loss of the uber-cheap £4.4m defender from their ranks as they ponder potential replacements from fields less dazzling than that which an Arsenal defender can provide.

+1. I try not to take points hits to get rid of players who (may) play. Unless they are Chris Brunt, who I didn't regret taking a hit to drop last week.. 🙂

Lol yeah I have no idea why I still have Brunt.

I guess it seems a bit silly taking out players who may play when I have Kelly and Szczesny. Teams in tatters at the moment though.

I've got Berbs and expect him to start and explode again. It's all to do with the letter 'B' when and his planets and stars align.

Bulgarian. Berbatov. Blackburn. Blackpool. Birmingham. My thinking then had to get a bit lateral with his other high scores, but then I saw the light:

      Liverpool = Bin dippers
      Sunderland = Black Cats

It's written in the stars. It's the letter 'B'. Bolton up next.

Ah, young grasshopper, enlightenment comes with the passage of time and the purity of thought. Can a man become a chicken when he lays no eggs? Can a woman be made of wood when she has no feelings? These are the questions you must ask yourself, and with the answers, walk the true path.

          Hope that helps.

Just to explain this comment- Rooney, Giggs, Hernandez and Rafael all missed EXTREMELY good chances. That's NOT to say Arsenal couldn't/shouldn't have scored.

I turned it off by the 80th minute or so but up to then my impression was that United won it because of their superior defence and goal keepers rather than their free flowing attacks.

Hats off to holyfield though, I loved watching tyson fight but evander had his tactics spot on by standing his ground, constantly jabbing to head & upper body to keep tuson off balance so he couldn't load up his hooks. And just basically refusing to be bullied. His performance in both fights are up there with the smartest I've seen.

+1. This is true. He was also cynical enough, used to elbow and headbutt people, not enough to get DQ'd, but enough to annoy them and put them off their game to the point where they contemplayed chewing ears, just to get the hell out! Tyson was my all time favourite though, explosive.

I know it's been discussed before, but if everyone is fit, how much do people think Valencia's return will impact Nani's minutes? I know SAF has thrown Nani over onto the left a few times, and that spot rotates, but overall will Nani dip or will there always be a spot for him to hold for 90 mins?

I think it will allow fergie to rest nani more often when they play 2/3 times in a week. E.g. gw31/32 if valencia's fit i can see nani starting one of them on the bench with champs league in between (probably)
He'll obviously still be 1st choice wide man though.

So I was looking at Djourou for my defence now I need a replacement, do I:

    1) Go for Carr (double up on a dodgy brum defence)
    2) Go for Enrique + double up on the Geordies
    3) Go for Enrique + change Harper for Begovic (also looking leaky)
    4) Other...

Other defenders will cover Chelsea Spurs Villa & Sunderland.

The appeal of Walker is a) he's crazy cheap, b) great fixtures for the run-in, c) he gets forward and gets involved (assist last game). Not convinced about Spurs defense right now (the double doesn't scream CS). Coleman taken a dip but should get more time in midfield now with all their injuries so could be good with their fixtures. Don't get the Bolton def thing unless I'm missing something.

If he was guaranteed to start I'd say Coleman's a better option but Walker's a great choice. Defo better than hutton (does he even play anymore)& robinson imo. Cheap as chips and great going forward.

hmm not much in that price range. I presume your getting luiz and you can probably start him every week so check spurs, villa, sunderland fixtures and see which weeks you'll want to start this defender to narrow it down. Then just choose whoever has the strongest fixtures in those week imo.

Yeah I tried to do that before, it's quite helpful but my experiences of rotating defenders this season had worked too well so I just tried to pick 5 defenders with good fixtures and I'll worry about who I'll pick at the time but with Djourou out I'll look again.

Enrique seems decent but I'm not sure on doubling up but Stokes fixtures aren't great and they seem to be leaking goals.

Carr would be decent for the double but they look leaky. I'm tempted by 2 Sunderland defenders, especially if they look solid at home again.

I would maybe gamble on a relegation team with lots to play for but Wolves and Blackpool are way too leaky and someone like West Ham has awful fixture tho. Lots to ponder...

I believe last time I saw a direct sub it was Osman. But I don't think it's as direct as that. Having less options in midfield means he just has to shuffle people about more, and so having someone like Coleman available who can play there makes sense to shuffle him in.

"IMPORTANT NOTICE! Teams with a lower seeding than their opponent will be penalised 16 points for a wildcard unless they have less than 5 changes to their playing 11 in that gameweek from their squad of 15 in their previous week. They will be penalised 12 points in these cases. Teams with a higher seeding will be penalised 4 points max only if their opponent takes a hit. If the opponent doesn't take a hit the H2H starts at 0-0."

Being a seed would be useless if you came up against a wildcard team. This way the top 256 teams get some sort of protection this week & the better teams get protection for most of the competition.

Whenever there is an upset or a higher seed wins by less than 4 I'll have to check their transfer history to see if they used their wildcard if it shows 0 trades for the gameweek. It will work out ok & each week there will be half the ties etc.

Im sorry, this new rule doesnt make any sense to me.

If a higher seed uses a wildcard, they arent penalized unless their opponent takes a hit: then they are penalized 4?

If a lower seed wildcards its -16 unless they made less than five changes from their starting, in which case its only -12?

            is this right?

If they are a high seed & have their WC still, it was the obvious plan to keep it all season at this point. Being in the top 10K or whatever without using your season wildcard is a good effort. Yes regarding the lower seeds. Stops teams from abusing their wildcard which they should have use by now if they really wanted to improve their rank. Very few of the top teams should have their wildcard whereas the qualifiers may still have theirs.

THe worst result is that you both start at -4. If they don't take a hit then it's just a normal H2H.

basically if Villarreal win by one goal then the stake is refunded, win by two or more goals and it wins, draw or defeat and the bet loses.

Good to see you getting in to the aussie films Atilla. Animal Kingdom is actually based on the Allen/Petingal family in Melbourne. Big family of armed robbers (and 1 insane mass murdering speed addict). Trevor Petingal and Victor Pierce and some other nasty folk actually lured 2 young policeman to a dumped stolen car before ambushing and executing them in the street in retaliation for the police killing one of their armed robber mates. Bad people, crazy story. Check out the book "The Matriarch" by Kath Pettingal (Jacki Weaver's character was based on her), good read.

Yeah really liked the film, thought Jackie Weaver was brilliant, and the young fella did a good job as well.
Like some of the Aussie stuff Champ, really enjoyed The Proposition and when I worked over in WA last year I got into Underbelly as well. Bit cheesy sometimes but entertaining. 🙂

Indeed although any mention of a quad after one home leg victory is setting yourself up for a massive fail. The quad chat i heard was from overexcited gooners in the pub before the CC final, needless to say they weren't so confident a few hours later. Didn't see Nasri's comments either, textbook stuff.

I heard a Martin Johnson interview recently, the egg chasing coach. He hit the nail on the head when asked about a grand slam. He said, "what's the point in talking about this? We'll talk about it when or if we achieve it, otherwise you set yourself up for a fall."

        Indeed.

The man makes a good point. I only just read the article, and Wenger doesn't actually say too much. Besides, what else do you want him to say when asked direct questions about a possible quadruple?

'Hi Arsene, can you win every competition remaining?'

        AW: 'No.'

He's in serious danger. Criticised by the board for his attack on UEFA - usually never happens. As much as I love him, there's absolutely no justification for relying on Rosicky, Almunia,Diaby and Denilson at this, crunch time of the season. This is two years running this has happened. 2008 - unlucky, 2009 - shit - 2010 -good but squad failed us, 2011 - good but squad failed us.

I personally don't think those 4 players you mention are significantly worse than the backup players of the other top sides. The team does lack the experience to handle being without their key players though, which is something Wenger might want to address.

The attack on UEFA was not a smart move, should have stolen a lean from SAF's book and used the good old media blockout after Barcelona.

It really amuses me how Rosicky gets away with it .It sickens me when I hear commentators saying "the likes of Van Persie, Fabregas, ROSICKY"! For a guy playing in such an offensive position for a good team, his returns, against an awful lot of bad teams, in terms of assists, goals, or any meaningful contribution are terrible. No scrap that, damn right offensive. He must be like Pelé on the training pitch. Smug and arrogant too, please god he's sold this summer.

Much like Baros, Koller and a couple of other dudes he was a good player under Karel Bruckner in the national team but never really transferred that form to club level.

imo wenger just keeps getting screwed by injuries. it's an impossible situation. if you buy better back up then you have the problem that when everyone is fit you have a load of top players that you're not playing, they get pissed off, arguements happen, team unity falls yadda yadda yadda. along with it being expensive with wages etc to have a top squad full of depth it's just easier to have the likes of denilson (meh), diaby (hugely promising player screwed by injuries) and rosicky (top player finished by that injury) as they almost expect to be on the bench or at least except it more. imo arsenal have showed when their team is fully fit (or even just their midfield and attack is fit) they can and will beaten anyone. wenger is check-mated until he gets this luck with injuries

True, we have been ridiculously unlucky with them. Imagine the out-ball Walcott would have provided at the Camp Poo? Grr, that's why I can never be too angry with Arsene, i always remember the injuries, and the good times. Actually felt sorry on him today, players need to stand up and help the poor man out - that game should have been won.

his only solution imo would be sell rvp and fabregas and buy 2 equally brilliant players who appear much less injury prone. sounds silly doesn't it? but that's the ridiculous situation he's left in.
i'd love to see a list of all the games fabregas, rvp, song and nasri/walcott were all fit for in the last couple of seasons. he's stuck as you can't really sell rvp and fabregas because they get injured too much, but that's the only solution. genuinely feel terrible for the guy. he's built a fantastic team, that's all he can do.

I dread the day when Wenger and Ferguson are gone from the Premiership. When nothing else of interest is happening you can always count on either of those to conjure up some magical talking points.

It's also their bizarre rivalry between them that somehow for me bottoms in the fact that they are both coaches who want to win by playing attacking football and by using your own young players.

It's a running gag i have with Mfaulkner that anything he says in relation to Utds transfer policy is the exact opposite of what actually happens. He was saying Utd would only sign Milner and Raul last year, much to his own hilarity, turns out he *might* have been a little bit right!

Went to OT today for the game, awesome day out! Great goals, could have had many more towards the end. Amazing to see Valencia back aswell, he had a stunning 45 minutes. Arsenal out of three cups, shame! Only downer was djrou out, another fantasy football transfer to make then! Good news on Nani's injury update though. Remember arsenal, youre just a shit barcelona! 😉

got the old manu glasses on, eh?

unless of course in your personal dictionary "scrappy as hell" = "great".

seriously. one off the rebound, one because of two arsenal defenders colliding. i don't begrudge the result, it was fair on the day.

Squad is decimated and only have 1 free transfer - how many hits do people think are required? I'm thinking 8 points.

    Foster, STOCKDALE
    Baines, Coleman, Kolarov, DJOUROU, KELLY
NANI, ARTETA, Vdv, Nasri, A Young
    Berbatov, Tevez, ZIGIC

      Also, what's better

      a) Cech & Stockdale (playing Cech every week)
      b) Foster & Gomes (rotating home fixtures)

I think a) is better option considering fixtures. Cech has great fixtures until last 3 gameweeks and should get plenty of points. One of the better options to have from Chelsea defense as he will start every game.

Think I'm swaying towards a) also, i.e. cue the Cech injury.. Chelsea coverage for me looking like just Cech & Luiz atm. Want Lampard but can't afford, and noone else looks worth it.

        VDV, A Young, Adam, Nasri

Thats a pretty decent team and if Berba starts he will give points against Bolton. Also most of players will take atleast 4 point hit this week so if it benefit your team for next few weeks, 8 point hit might work.

Quick poll - which is best (all for 8 point hits)?

    a) Baines, Arteta & Tevez -> Walker, Lampard & RVP
    b) Nani, Arteta & Tevez -> Lampard, Adam & RVP
    c) Arteta, Zigic & Tevez -> Adam, RVP & Defoe

Its close between b) & c). While Lampard is tempting i am slightly edging towards c) just because its better to get rid of Zigic than Nani.

Having said that Lampard is a very good but very expensive differential with ownership of less than 7 % and great fixtures and on all set pieces.

Funnily enough I was edging towards a). I think it's a) or c) for me. Good thing about a) is it gives obvious captain choice in Lampard for GW32-34. If I do a) then team will be:

        Foster
        Baines, Coleman, Kolarov
VDV, Nasri, A Young, Lampard, Nani(if fit)
RVP, Berba, Zigic(if Nani isn't fit)

        Subs: Stockdale, Zigic/Nani, Djourou, Kelly

Will just have to hope that Coleman and Kolarov start!
