The FA Cup serves up a Manchester derby in the last four, as City see off Championship Reading with a second-half Micah Richard’s goal. The ecstatic Eastlands celebrations failed to disguise the fact that Roberto Mancini’s side again failed to impress, relying on a set-piece winner as their multi-millionaires struggled to pick Reading’s lock. As Fantasy Managers contemplate a forthcoming blank gameweek for Carlos Tevez and company, the stock in City’s assets continues to slide.

At the Britannia meanwhile, Stoke City made progress courtesy of more dead-ball deciders. Robert Huth’s connection with a Roy Delap slingshot and Danny Higginbotham’s free-kick proved enough to dispose of a resurgent West Ham.

On-loan John Carew missed out on the chance to lead the line for Stoke’s Quarter Final showdown with West Ham; a back injury kept the big Norwegian on the sidelines, allowing Kenwyne Jones to take his place alongside Jonathan Walters up front. Danny Higginbotham started at left-back for the hosts as Tony Pulis welcomed Matthew Etherington back to his starting line-up. After an impressive performance in the first 45 minutes against his former club, the winger’s main contribution was a miss from a dubiously awarded penalty, as the home side avenged their recent 3-0 trashing at Upton Park to set up a Semi Final date with Bolton.

Robert Huth continued his outstanding goalscoring season for the hosts, netting the opener direct from a Rory Delap throw-in, while Higginbotham’s free-kick proving to be the match-winner. Thomas Sorensen, preferred to Asmir Begovic for Stoke’s cup games this season, kept the Hammers at bay time and again in the second half as Pulis’ side held on for victory. The Stoke manager hailed the club’s “Fantastic Achievement“ in reaching the Semi Finals, which -as Andy has mentioned- will take place in the weekend of gameweek 33, with the league fixture (at home to Wolves) to be subsequently rescheduled. There is a chance that this will remain in gameweek 33, with the fixture shifted to a midweek April 20 slot – that is yet to be confirmed.

Avram Grant chose to leave Demba Ba out of his squad – resting the Senegalese striker after his recent back-to-back appearances. Grant started with Carlton Cole up front at the Britannia then, with Freddie Piquionne providing support. Piquionne began well, putting the Hammers in front with a dubious opener having appeared to have handled a Thomas Hitzlsperger pass. The striker was however injured in the process of bundling home the goal and was forced off after just 36 minutes. He will now be a doubt for the gameweek 30 trip to West Ham. With Robbie Keane ineligible for that match, Grant will have just Ba and Obinna as obvious options up front.

The other FA Cup Semi Final will be all Manchester affair, after Micah Richards finally broke Reading’s resistance late in the second-half at Eastlands. The full-back headed home a David Silva corner to banish the Royals’ hopes but City’s performance was lethargic at best. With this being their sixth game in seventeen days, however, the below-par display is perhaps understandable. Silva was an impressive exception for the home side, continually prompting and probing in the final third of the pitch, though the same cannot be said for Carlos Tevez, who, yet again, looked a shadow of his former self – a concern for his many Fantasy owners.

Aleksander Kolarov -previously fielded left of a front three by Roberto Mancini- played at left-back this time round but his set-piece duties were still a threat, and the City boss gave rare starts to the likes of Shaun Wright-Phillips and Patrick Veira as he attempted to freshen up the side following a long trip home from Moscow on Thursday night. Mancini also chose to bench big-money forwards Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli, with the latter coming on for a forgettable 20 minute appearance halfway through the second half, as City limped into their first Semi Final for 30 years.

City’s semi-final appearance will fall in gameweek 33 of course, postponing their league fixture with Spurs on April 17. Harry Redknapp’s side already have a fixture on April 20 with Arsenal, so the City vs Spurs game will certainly drop out of the gameweek and leave Roberto Mancini’s side with a blank. City now have 3 away games and a blank in their next 5 gameweeks – not an appealing prospect for owners of City’s assets.

    morning, been away on holiday. always plan your holidays around blank PL weekends. Loads of questions, will ask one at a time.

    Are there any confirmed blanks ahead? And if not, what teams are likely to and when?

      I'm not sure, so I won't say for certain, but the Arsenal/Man U result could have given a blank, but didn't.

        I reckon he's got rid of Nani and Arteta, which is what I'd have done. How knows who he's bought in though, hopefully Lampard.

        Takes money away from his front line, which I quite like him having at the mo.

          speaking of what you'd have done soop, care to look at my team and my cup opponent and suggest a 4 point hit that could be made up for? right now im thinking arteta->downing, putting simpson out of XI and on bench. have no keeper, thinking gomes. already spent freebie, kelly->walker.

      Ferdinand who is almost confirmed out of Bolton at this point as well as Champions League, I actually can't see him coming straight back in anyway, Vidic and Smalling are looking very good together. That being said, it is hard to second guess Fergie, so Smalling does have the threat of rotation hanging over him, but I think, and hope, that Smalling will play most of the remainder of the season at CB.

      He'll almost certainly play. Rio is injured, and almost certain to be out for GW30, then back after the international break (if he is ready to come back. He's been blighted by injuries for a long time and I wouldn't be surprised if his lay off lasted longer.)

    Plan number 666 made, so commentatos please!

    Just looking at the following, sounds marvelous right?
    gw30: djorue + tevez => walker + rvp (-4)
    gw31: nothing, nada, zip, nill, zero
    gw32: kolarov + ferguson + rooney => luiz + lampard + wellbeck (-4)
    gw33: silva => nasri

    Plan B could be:
    gw30 + gw31: same
    gw32: kolarov + silva + rooney => luiz + lampard + gyan (-4)
    gw33: somebody => dawson

    I like the first one. Today.

      started planning for GW33 a couple weeks ago. major strategy is to get through GW31 w/o a hit so as to bring in 2 chelsea for GW32, so if there isnt any injuries to muck things up (that never happens) then go for it. Sunderland attacking options are on my watchlist in a couple weeks as well.

            I understand about running the place, but they've actually raised prices without raising their game. Chips/rice/garden peas cost next to nothing, so I got charged £2.91 for a chicken leg with a bit of seasoning.

            It's not too much of a stretch to knock together some proper rice and peas, a bit of coconut, some kindey beans and some thyme, especially if our regular carribean joint can serve up proper jerk chicken for £1 a leg and £2.50 for a massive portion of rice and peas.

              But if that caribbean place is selling it every day, it's no wonder they can do it cheaper (buying ingredients in bulk) and better (because they're well practised and specialist).

              A varied menu is always going to cost more, and I've never had great food from a canteen. I've got no sympathy here! They've raised their prices because everything is more expensive. I don't know where you work, but you're quite lucky there is still a work canteen at all, because that's the one of the first places to get culled- unless they raise prices.

                TBH, it's now a backup for when I forget/can't be bothered to bring lunch.

                Of course the carribean place is going to do it better, but if you reckon they can get ingredients cheaper than our canteen contractor, you're almost certainly wrong.

                  It would depend what the ingredients are. For chips, rice and other generic foods then yeah I agree. But if you want them to put something specific in their caribbean meal to make it extra tasty and authentic which they might only run once a fortnight and can't readily use in other meals, then I don't think I am wrong as they'd be buying in smaller amounts from their contracted supplier. They wouldn't be allowed to shop around for the best price, as the shop would.

                    That's true. But I honestly think it's ignorance rather than a case of not bothering to try.

                    The only thing they'd be missing from a really basic recipe that they'd not normally use is the coconut milk, and maybe at a stretch, fresh thyme.

                    I'm gonna make my own tonight I think.

    85 points behind my rival. Can't separate the transfers I'd *like* to make from the ones I *need* to make. Planning to take a few 4pt hits over the next few weeks.

    Question: where would you start? Which two players should I ship out first this week?

    Team:
    Foster, Al Habsi
    Kolarov, Huth, Coleman, Rafael, Djourou
    Nani, Van der Vaart, Nasri, Meireles, Downing
    Tevez, Berbatov, Zigic

        well since youd play 3-5-2 this weekend??
        Berba out, Defoe or RVP in?
        Djourou to Luiz?
        But you have a good team this week imo, save the transfers for after the international break then take a 4 point hit to make 3 changes??

      I'd say your midfield is fine. I think RVP is essential and you should probably make a change to your defence considering Djourou out and Rafael/Kolarov potentially out of favour.

      That considered I'd be tempted to do Berba > RVP and Djourou > Walker if possible.

        Djourou or Rafael > Walker is the first...

        If I do Rafael then I can bring in RVP this week for a 4 point hit and have him for the long term (Injuries depending)

        If I do Djourou then I will prob just have to do that as a freebie..

    My front 8 is giving my headaches. I like my midfield but it's proportionally too dear to accommodate good forwards.
    Currently have
    Nani , Silva, VDV, Lamps and A Young.
    Tevez, Zigic, Bendtner.

    Bendtner has to go (it was a whim that didn't pay off but it funded Captain Lamps last week so fine really).
    Tevez - Could go or could stay.
    Zigic - Might as well stay, decent run of fixtures and double coming back again. Worse ways round he can warm the bench.

    So who's more essential RVP or Roonpig?
    Who's the best sub 8.0 striker to get in?

      I see Bendtner/Zigic/Silva/Tevez as expendible in that team, particularly Silva for his returns and price tag, you could bring in Adam and free up some cash to upgrade Bendtner to RVP, but it depends on how much you have in the bank and how much you have to free up elsewhere, Kolarov and Huth are two in my team I will be downgrading,one to Luiz which is more of an upgrade obviously, and one to a Simpson type character.

      This weekend Bendtner OUT is a priority so I would do Bendtner OUT Wellbeck IN, which frees up cash to do Silva OUT Adam IN next week upgrading Zigic to RVP and doing Tevez to Rooney the following week?

            Wow that is similar, only Carr/R Johnson, Kolarov/Djourou and Adam/Brunt which are different.

            Looks good, one of my problems is getting Lampard in, if I did those transfers I definitely wouldn't be able to get him in until GW32.

            If I did Tevez > Van Persie & Brunt > VdV/Bale this week I'd have enough cash to get Lampard in for Young next week!

              see Young OUT Lampard IN doesn't make sense to me with Villa fixtures, I want a final midfield of VDV/Nani/Lampard/Adam/Young, which means hits in the next 2-3 weeks, I think hits are fine for Chelsea players after this week, with really good fixtures and a double coming up.

              I would go B if I were you this weekend, just not sure if I want Bale or VDV either

                I think Bale is more nailed on, and he isn't as injury prone as VdV.

                I know, ideally I would rather keep Young but I also have Nasri and I don't want to take him out with his fixtures and the double.

                Next week Young has Everton away so that seems the best time to take him out if any.

                    Fair enough, think I'm going to keep Tevez for the next 2 weeks, people were writing him off and getting rid before this fixture last year and he went and scored a brace!

      Foster is a keeper in my mind, he gets save points and has another double coming up in 33, so I would say no to Foster.

      Hart on the other hand is someone I would chop, City can't be relied upon to get clean sheets and he is that bit more expensive than Foster, so I would do Hart OUT Sunderland keeper IN (whoever that may be rigth now!)

I am looking at a front line of Rooney/RVP/Wellbeck to afford a midfield of Lampard/Nani/Adam/Young and VDV, City's form in front of goal is worrying, Tevez gets the chop for me next week.

          Yeah it's a sound idea. But although there's been loads of talk on here about it, I doubt Tevez will suddenly become a differential, which is how I read the original post. I'd consider it myself, but there are more pressing issues in my team- that's why I guess plenty of others will sort out elsewhere rather than take out a 90 minute cert.

            All things clarify now! I might not even make any transfer this week, wich is great to have 2 for next!

        I am definitely going through with it. I'll get Tevez back GW 34 or 35 when his fixtures pick up and Rooney's become tough.

      I saw one of friday and it looked like i was watching John Cusack's 2012 movie. A truck was moving fast and you could see the water on the bridge getting so close to the truck. Really scary sh*t
