After a tough last few gameweeks that have seen them collect just one point from five Premier League matches, Sunderland’s fixtures are starting to look appealing again. There’s no doubt Steve Bruce’s side rode their luck a little in the recent goalless draw at the Emirates, but the Black Cats boss will take heart in the spirited performance ahead of the upcoming home match against Liverpool, which is then followed by a trip to Eastlands to face Man City.

Sunderland then have one of the most favourable run-ins of any team in the Premier League, with just one of their last seven fixtures (WBA, bir, WIG, FUL, bol, WOL, whm) against a team in the top half of the table. Beaten just three times at the Stadium of Light this season, Bruce will be looking for his side to push on from their current league position of eighth and the contribution of Asamoah Gyan will be vital.

In his debut season, Gyan is the club’s top scorer with nine league goals and- with Darren Bent’s departure coupled with injuries to both Danny Welbeck and Frazier Campbell- has cemented his role as Sunderland’s key forward since moving to Wearside at the tail end of last August.

With four goals, two assists and four Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points since the turn of the year, Gyan has continued to bang in the goals despite his side’s indifferent form. Bearing in mind the afore-mentioned set of fixtures, the Ghanaian could well be finding the net a few more times before the season is out, particularly now as Sunderland have key players such as Lee Cattermole returning from injury to strengthen their starting XI.

Although last week saw Welbeck make a brief substitute appearance since succumbing to a knee injury in early January, Gyan looks the more reliable of Sunderland‘s forwards to plump for, in terms of both performance and availability. Priced at just £7.0m and with 4.2% Fantasy Ownership, he’s still relatively cheap enough to free up FPL budgets for those Fantasy Managers looking to juggle personnel in light of the upcoming blank and/or double gameweeks.

Ahead of this week‘s home encounter with Liverpool, the stats certainly seem to be favourable for those mulling over an imminent punt on the Sunderland forward; Gyan has found the net in three of his last four home games and, with Liverpool conceding at least two goals in six of their last eight away games, the signs are looking good.

Quick bit of help needed lads:

Which defender to play? Johnson or Kolarov? Obviously Johnson has the superior fixture, but it sounds - from the tweet today - as though Pulis is looking at playing Sorensen this weekend, and if he does.... I'll be playing Foster and Johnson away to Wigan. Not ideal, innit?

Kolarov will definitely play with Zabaleta being out, and is the sort of guy who could pop up with a random goal, even against the very best sides. 😉

In that case (with the Sorensen thing) the logical selection is Kolarov.

The thing is that the keeper issue doesn't make any difference! I should just play the defender that I think is most likely to return points, and that has always been Johnson. It's just a mental thing that I'm reluctant to, in effect, play two Birmingham defenders.

I do love the doubling thing personally. From 32 to the end I'm going to double on Sunderland and Everton defenders as they rotate perfectly, so it'll be Mignolet and Bramble (?) one week and then Howard and Coleman. Foolproof, genius, splendiferous, sage, wise - all of these terms apply.

Yeah, people - myself included - seem to be irrationally reluctant to double up on defences.

If team A has odds of 1.60 to keep a clean sheet, and team B has odds of 1.61 to keep a clean sheet, your expected returns are higher when choosing 2 defenders from team A, rather than one from each.

From personal experience I've never regretted doubling at the back this season. Clean sheets have been a fecking pain to predict so most of the time I've only been getting 2's from my defenders anyway (I don't invest much in the likes of Baines or Vidic etc), so the odd time it works it's beautiful.

I'd play Johnson, more chance of a cleanie. Ferguson and Jiranek due back for Birmingham, both of whom should give them a bit more solidity. As we saw at Goodison big Roger doesn't need to do much to picks up bps once Birmingham get a result. Sure Kolorov may score or assist but he will need to break the 2 pt mark as Chelsea will score.

.....and Wigan don't score any goals.

Bleurgh! This is becoming quite an annoying decision... If Begovic wasn't a slight risk of being benched then I wouldn't even thought twice about picking Johnson ahead of Kolarov.

Didn' even read the tweet to be honest but I can't see why Begovic would be benched after his Gordon Banks impersonation the other week against WBA. Was Sorensen that good in the Cup? Didn't see the game so can't comment but seems a strange one to even consider dropping Begovic now.

Easy Kolarov. He'll be taken of on the 62nd minute for AJ. It will be 0-1. Silva goal, kola assist of course. Then Ramieres will make it 1-1 and Torres will score the winner. Simples.

it's actually a rather strong squad. If you have to do another transfer...look to a home team, a player who can rotate next week. For example, meirieielelelelelels at liverpool is away back to back. Barton's a doubt still. Kelly is injured. It's actually a crappy week I think though.

To be honest, I don't think those changes are worth the 8point hit, Van Der Vaart has just come back from injury therefore he won't be at his best, and as for Suarez, Caroll is most likely to return, therefore decreasing Suarez's chances of big points. Also i feel there is no faith to keep in Berbatov, he won't be anything special for the rest of the season now Rooney is back getting goals and Hernandez looking on good form..

Nah, Arteta being out should mean that Coleman is nailed on to start - apparently he got a standing ovation against Birmingham after his performance too.

With Zabaleta out, Kolarov is the only real option at left back, and Ramires + Ivanovic should do a decent job of tracking his forward runs.

I don't like to think that I'm the only one in my mini league who takes it this seriously. I think I'm going to tell a few mates about this site next season anyways.... Cos they do take it seriously, just know nothing about this site!

Find it so annoying that my two nearest rivals have actually forgot to change their teams at quite a few stages this season though, and I'm about 40 points behind one still and just ahead of the other!

Yeah. Nani will be around £11.5, Bale and VDV around the £10m mark, Nasri probably expensive too.

Next season will be difficult with inflated prices.

            True dat.

I can't see his long-term position being in midfield. He doesn't have enough guile to really be a threat on the wing, he's just too defensively naive to play at fullback right now.

As you say he is one-dimensional on the wing and he would need to vary his game considerably to remain effective there but I don't think Moyes sees him as a long-term prospect in that position.

With more playing experience he should be a top-quality right back in a couple of years.

I think city will line up with a back 4 of:
        Richards Lescott Kompany Boeteng.

Mancini will play for the draw so im guessing Kola will play left wing.

I'm pretty set on putting Luiz in this week, but Chelsea do have a lot of options at the back. What is the consensus on whether he will play every game? As far as I see it it's Terry, Luiz, Alex and Ivanovic for the CBs and Ivanovic and Bosingwa (and maybe Luiz?) for the RB spot. Adding that he can't play in the CL and he's been good for them so far surely means he'll stay on the pitch?

He wasn't particularly impressive against Blackpool.

Honestly, I don't really know how much he'll play in the league to be honest! Alex is far too good to be regularly on the bench, and Terry is obviously the club captain, so Luiz could find himself on the bench a fair few times between now and the end of the season.

Whilst he is obviously supremely talented, he's still fairly naive and can be a little bit of a liability at times - he's already shown that on more than one occasion. Perhaps a few games out of the side could do him some good as he adapts to the intensity of the league.

Anyway, there's no immediate rush to get him in IMO, unless you are desperately short of defenders this week. Our next two fixtures - MCY stk - aren't exactly brilliant, and those two games should give a good indication as to how Carlo intends to use Luiz, Alex and Terry.

Classic case of projecting your own ideas into the mainstream, commonly known as DB syndrome. Carlo didn't spend 800 billions pounds on Luiz to play him on the bench, come on now.

Torres was benched against Copenhagen. As good as Luiz looks, Jamsiep is right, he looks naive at times. Carlo has even said this. He'll take some time to adapt to the premiership.

          ?!

I haven't actually said anything here! I'm just advising caution when considering transferring in Luiz, and saying that waiting a couple of weeks is the sensible option.

And what do you think my idea of Luiz is? Do you think that I don't rate him and think that he shouldn't play at all?!

No need to get all defensive because you already kneejerked and transferred him in.... At least it's going well so far. 😕

probably the everton boys ------ BECAUSE...bir are away, so I assume Wigan will be going for it like mad. Leaving only BP and save points. Everton are at home, with arteta out, meaning baines has extra 'pressure'/need if you will to assist the forwards.

Not entirely sure why this situation has arisen.. Why can't you just play one of each?

Anyway, I'd much rather double up on the Everton defenders. They have a better chance of a clean sheet, and are both more likely to return attacking points than Johnson.

For anyone that's interested. We are doing a predictions league for premiership matches from now until the end of the season.

It's just a bit of fun, and the rules are really easy.

    http://www.predictthepremiership.com/profile.php

You just go on this site, and then create a username and password.

You then enter our mini league code and can enter your predictions for each week.

The mini league code is 30325. Hope to see you guys there 🙂

I would love it if Tevez gets an injury in training tomorrow or something which rules him out of the game on Sunday.

    I wanna get Gyan in!!

I wouldn't, then everyone would get rid and get RVP/Rooney. Not having Tevez is a differential for me, as I can't see rivals getting rid. So I'm banking on him not doing great for the rest of the season.

Tevez could be a huge differential for me against Sunderland next gameweek I suppose. Well it's an expensive forward line so they best get me some points!

This is a very tough week to predict, for example: (a) I can see SAF resting Rooney and Nani, and partnering Hernandez with Berbs -- and Hernandez scores a hat trick with all three assists coming from Valencia; (b) watch Defoe be the man of the match for Spurs with a brace, Bale and VDV score 1 point each; and (c) Carroll starts, but does absolutely nothing, having lost form . . . I suspect that Nasri, Van Persie, Adam, Lampard, Young and Downing will all perform well; beyond them, which mid-fielders to choose? O'Hara? And defense is merely a shot in the dark (that is, 1 out of 3) . . .

Two consecutive league defeats = no resting of best players. Besides, it's an international break afterwards so resting them wouldn't really serve any purpose.

Yes, it will be very interesting to see what SAF comes up with -- he'll probably confuse all humanity and play Rooney, Berbs and Hernandez in a 4-3-3 . . .

heh, its o'hara or adam, and for obvious reasons i would prefer adam not to score highly

i'm not sure about tevez -> rvp. think i'm gonna hold off on that one.

i was maybe thinking hart -> gomes as gomes rotates well with foster for the season, and my main rival has 2 spurs defenders

Nothing solid but he looks light he might be benched again. (from EFC website)

Seamus Coleman is happy to bide his time after being moved away from the spotlight by David Moyes.

Coleman hasn't started either of the last two Everton games with his manager admitting he has played the Irishman more than he had planned.

"It is all part and parcel of it," the level-headed youngster told evertontv. "I am just delighted to be part of Everton and in and around the first team.

"I have been lucky enough to play a part in a lot of games and the manager thought maybe it was time to take me out. I have no complaints, he is the manager and I will just try and do well in training and see how it goes."

      Midpark and forward combinations:

Mids: Adam Young Nani VDV Nasri

Lampard in this mix causes a few problems so even though he has the fixtures, I'm not he's going to be worth it for the price. O Hara has bad fix and Hitzberger, Mereiles, Nolan have some question mark against them or other.

Forward: sans Lampard comfortably allows two from RVP/Roonpig/Tevez.
