Spurs went into last night’s game at the Lane intent on at least taking the game to Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter final, but there was never any real likelihood of Jose Mourinho’s side letting slip a four goal lead. The leap in class ultimately proved a step too far for a home side that had previously excelled in the group stages. Here’s the notes from last night’s events…

Goals Dry Up for Spurs
With an average of three goals per game, Harry Redknapp’s side were top scorers in the group stages but they have been found wanting in the last sixteen. Over the four matches against Milan and Real Madrid, Spurs found the net just once, though Madrid were always going to be a tough nut to crack; last night was their eight clean sheet of the competition. A top-class centre forward is something Spurs have lacked all season; their three forwards have scored just thirteen league goals between them this term.

With a game at home to Barcelona this Saturday, Madrid, in truth, never really extended themselves and were happy to contain a Spurs side that -despite a very attacking midfield line-up- were simply unable to find a way through.

Formation
With Peter Crouch suspended following his sending off in Spain last week, Roman Pavlyuchenko led the line in a 4-4-1-1 formation for the Londoners, with Rafael Van der Vaart in the hole behind.

On the hour mark, Redknapp changed the formation, sending on Jermain Defoe for Aaron Lennon, with Van der Vaart moving out to the right as the team resorted to 4-4-2. Madrid were simply too well-drilled for this move to make any impact and the victory saw Mourinho became the first coach to take four different teams into the Champions League Semi Finals.

Heurelho’s Howler
The Spurs keeper was guilty of yet another basic error last night, allowing a speculative long-range effort from Cristiano Ronaldo to somehow slip through his hands and find its way into the back of the net. Coming just five minutes into the second half, this killed off the slim hopes of a home crowd that done everything they could to be that vital “twelfth man” for Harry’s boys.

Barring a couple of dubious penalty shouts, there was not much for the Spurs supporters to celebrate, but their show of support was a fine acknowledgement of a European campaign that now leaves Man United the last English club left in this season’s competition.

Huddlestone Continues Comeback
Last weekend’s home win over Stoke saw Tom Huddlestone return to the Tottenham fold for the first time since gameweek 12 and the midfielder grabbed an assist in the 3-2 victory. Huddlestone was given another start last night, joining Luka Modric in the centre of midfield and lasted 70 minutes before being replaced by Sandro.

Harry Wants More
With his first taste of Champions League football ending in the last eight, Harry Redknapp is already desperate to do it all again next season. The Spurs boss said after the game:

“It is no good doing it once and then not doing it again, we have to improve and be there next year too. You’ve seen the players we have to play at that level and we just need to tweak that squad so we can do it again. Much like Arsenal do, and Chelsea and Manchester United, that’s how they keep doing it. We have to finish above Man City and above Chelsea in the league, that is our aim – it is not going to be easy but that is what we want.”

A look at Spurs run in (ARS, WBA, che, BLP & mcy, liv, BIR) shows exactly what he means by “not easy”, with a North London derby and visits to three of the top six still to come before the end of the season.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Can't help wondering about what might've been if we'd bought a striker who could

-play up front on his own
    -score some goals
-not get sent off after 15 minutes
    -wasn't sh*t

but there you go. It was all great fun.

Yeah agree. Should've done it in the summer... By the time january transfer window came along it was always going to be difficult.

Guess they didn't want to commit until they knew they were through the qualifying round... That's another problem because if spurs manage to snatch fourth, it would be the same scenario

Yes in terms of value... But I think if you're buying gw34 players you're going to struggle to spend your full budget. You'll be changing a load of expensive players for cheap players!

I've been thinking the same thing..cleverley has seemed more of a goal threat and only seems to have failed to do something aainst hard away opponents like city, chelsea, and that spurs draw at home. Interesting article about n'zogs on here though - i was worried that he's getting subbed too often but it seems to suggest its when he's not feeling it in a tough game - one against blackpool could be right up his street then?

I think with Adam quiet the past 2 games he's due a storm, would be very surprised if he did anything less than just scoring. As you already have Luiz and I assume Lampard, I'd say A.

    point for consideration:

seen a lot of "vdv out" talk/transfers, and not saying that it's definitely the wrong move, but...

his run of form coincided reasonably well with huddlestone's presence in the team. as form contributes to confidence, he carried on against BLA and ars the next 2 gws, but ever since has been hit or miss (mostly miss).

i think that huddlestone's return will similarly coincide with vdv's renaissance, and such an influential defensive addition to the midfield is *clearly* going to provide more opportunities up front for vdv and the striker.

happy to be holding on for at least a couple more gws

I think you could have a point...

Also, whilst VDV clearly isn't playing well right now, it doesn't necessarily mean that he doesn't have the chance of scoring well in the next few weeks. He hogs set pieces, loves a shot and no longer has the CL to get injured in! He's still a good FPL option IMO.

Don't think I'd have the funds to do an Adam>VDV move, not without some points hits so losing Lampard looks the easiest for my team. I'll probably be very disappointed in Lampard by then anyway.

Also, I'm intending to do Rooney>Tevez in GW36, so could do with no transfer in GW35.

      Or maybe not....

Three of VDV's four double figure scores this season have come with Huddlestone out of the side.

    Theo Walcott. This depresses me.

That's the thing I (along with everyone else) don't know how long protection actually lasts for, it's between 7 and 10 days, so he's been off protection for at least three days now.

Could someone please explain to me why Walcott suddenly is so high on the Watchlist? I know there is a double GW but he hasn't exactly played a lot recently.

And Drogba is nowhere to be found on the list, even though he is the most dangerous Chelsea forward at the moment?

That's why he's so much more expensive than them....

I think Walcott merits a place on the watchlist though. His scoring form, when in the side, has been good all year, and he should be good for starts in the coming weeks after the ineffectiveness of Nasri and Arshavin in the last couple of games.

+1 I reckon Walcott will start both games, if Wengers clever he'll stick him on the left if we play the kid at RB again and against Spurs he can exploit the space left by Bale or he could probably rinse BAE.

Anyone think it's worth a 4 point hit for

    Etherington>walcott
    Nani>fabregas

Got kalou (stupidly), luiz, anelka, foster and djourou as doubles. I know kalou's pap but think he may get some gametime this week so loathe to take him out.

    Advice appreciated.

I think that now we are out of the Champions League, Kalou's chances of minutes in the league are virtually non-existent. He was pathetic when he came on to Tuesday too, so he bloody well shouldn't be anywhere near the side.

Good transfers, you must have a fair bit in the bank though?

Thinking of switching Nasri to Walcott, since he hasnt done anything for ages, which is a bit crabby but would allow Barton to Adam or Welbeck to Carroll Which do you guys think is best?

I'd probably do it, I'm liking Walcott's chances for this week, and if I could get him in then I probably would.

Adam is more of a priority than Carroll too.

Query. Looking for a sub 5.0m striker and have ear-marked either Beckford or Welbeck for the remainder of the season (injuries/suspensions permitting). Who would you get, if in my shoes??

Sunderland in terrible form but with a juicy set of fixtures (on paper) though welbecks goals per minutes shade that of Beckfords Everton whom have a mixed bag of fixtures, though Everton and Beckford have made in roads towards form within the last few weeks, with the lad rarely getting 90 mins.

    Feed me your thinking!!!

similar situation... at the time of transfer was .1 short of affording sturridge.

went with welbeck over beckford, mainly on the back of the fixture list. considered dj, but have been burnt by him before in FPL, so not heading back there.
