There’s just one Premier League fixture this fine Tuesday night, as Manchester United look to strengthen their grip on the title with a visit up to St. James Park and Newcastle United. The Dugout Discussion chatroom has been opened, and offers you a place for your musings as the action unfolds.

As is unfortunately the norm nowadays, there have been one or two differing team sheets for tonight’s game being passed about on Twitter, but this is how they line-up…

Newcastle XI: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Barton, Guthrie, Tiote, Gutierrez, Lovenkrands, Ameobi

Man United XI: Van der Sar, O’Shea, Smalling, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Carrick, Anderson, Giggs, Hernandez, Rooney

The home side are as predicted meaning that Tim Krul replaces the injured Steve Harper. Elsewhere, Cheik Tiote comes straight back into the Toon midfield, with banned Kevin Nolan missing out.

As for the visitors, Chris Smalling replacing Rio Ferdinand doesn’t come as a shock given the latter’s recent injury record. Neither is it a surprising that Luis Nani starts at the expense of Antonio Valencia. One piece of team news that does raise an eyebrow is the total omission of Dimitar Berbatov to the United squad, with no late injury news to report of as yet (EDIT: Sir Alex Ferguson says Berbatov “wasn’t feeling great” earlier today and is the reason why he misses out).

Oh, and Wayne Rooney (swear-jar in hand) takes his place alongside Javier Hernandez up front for the Reds.

Akers Richard or Akers, as he is known, has been regularly haunting this site since July 2008. He is young and foolish, take what he says with a pinch of salt. Follow them on Twitter

Yeah, I chose to lose Nani this week which has turned out well. Rooney still looks to be on fire, to be fair. Just didn't happen for him tonight with the hapless Carrick and Anderson creating b*gger all behind him.

    Peeps,

Thinking of bringing Etherington in for Adam and Sturridge for Welbeck. Fixtures for both Stoke and Bolton are good at least for the week after the DGW. Thing is, it would mean benching one of:

    Walcott (bol)
    Young (STK)
    Lampard (WHU)
    Malouda (WHU)
    Van Persie (bol)
    Rooney (EVE)

Perhaps Walcott would be the one to bench but then again he's more effective away from home on the counter attack. Thoughts?

Zamora is too short term; his fixtures aren't great after the double. Sturridge has Blackburn, Sunderland and Blackpool after his DGW.

I need to make a decision on transfers tonight. My current team is:
    Begovic
    Luiz Walker Djourou
    Nani Nasri Adam Lampard Young
    Hoilett RVP
    0,4 in the bank
    Subs: Foster RJohnson Coleman Tevez
    I want to do:
Coleman, Adam, Nasri and Tevez out
Huth, O'Hara, Dempsey and Sturridge in
    12 point hit
Should I do it? How can I improve my transfers?

Don't rush on Adam, I'm doing Coleman and Nasri out for Huth and Duff so our transfers are similar. If you have to you should probs go for double gameweekers with a 4 point hit - they're less likely to backfire as if they miss one game they usually come back for the next.

Why not rush on Adam? Newcastle is Blackpool's easiest fixture in their remaining games and he's rated 50/50 to play in it. When there's bargain DGW midfielders out there I'm afraid he's now the first candidate to make way.

Hes come back to bite before, I'm sure that team can harbour a crocked midfielder for a game, two games, or maybe none at all.

Plus this all could be solved if Jackmac here invested in an I-Phone or similar.

If you want a clear out en masse, then there will be no better time than now until the end of the season - the DGW soaks up a points hit or two if you choose wisely/luckily.

Carrick got better as the game went on but patently not trustworthy enough to anchor that United midfield next season. Had a good few games up until the semifinal but United's midfield does need an overhaul.

Yep, his mistake against City didn't affect his game. I thought Anderson was the bigger disappointment - I didn't see any drive from him until Giggs took over his role for the last 10 minutes and pulled Newcastle's midfield about a bit.

I wouldn't say their defence ran the game at all, it was fairly even. Carrick form has improved since the introduction of Hernandez to the starting line up over Berbatov. He's much better when aiming for a mobile target rather than having to play direct to Berbs feet.

Agree. His long range passing his excellent and not too 'floaty' which gives time for defenders to get into position. I thought he broke up play well too and didn't dally on the ball.

Berbatov doesn't give Carrick the longer ball option, unfortunately.

He played plenty of excellent long range forward passes, was constantly mobile, constantly an option. His job is to sit, intercept, be there as a constant option to pass to, distribute it well.

Is it just me or are we getting a bit BORED of these 1-0 1-1 0-0 low scoring boring games. With the only excitement being whether it was a penalty or not or whether some c**nt dived or not. I for one would not be that interested in football if I didnt play Fantasy football, how sad for someone who was absolutely infatuated by the game throughout his teens, actually I don't think football is a 'keeper' I think it is something that you get really passionate about as a teenager (and of course a kid) then you lose interest really unless you have FFS or you are a bit sad...........anyone agree?

No! Not every game can be a 5-3 classic. Enjoy the 0-0s and the great footy played in them. Can't believe you posted that.

Sunderland. So it could be ever so slightly due to the fact that Sunderland have only picked up one point in about the last four years. 😛

completely agree i loved football till i was about 25 including winning the world cup, didnt really bother with it for the next 15 years and started to get a little bit of interest back when sky and the pl started, then with so many live games on used football for gambling for about 8 years, done my brains give up again ,ff got me into it again big time 2 years ago if i have no players i couldnt give a shite, but when a team containing ur players does well the magic returns ,without ff i wouldnt watch a match.

I fully agree Alsybach. My favourite football was the mid 90's. Of course that co-incides with when Newcastle were challenging for the title and had an amazing team.....
