Bolton come into the double gameweek with their tail firmly between their legs following last Sunday’s 5-0 mauling by Stoke in the FA Cup Semi Final. With the club sitting on 43 points in the Premier League, they are safe from the perils of relegation yet find European qualification just out of reach, and it’s tricky to second-guess just how they will react to such a heavy defeat.

When weighing up the acquisition of their players, there are two schools of thought ahead of the weekend kick-off; the first says morale will be low and, having performed so poorly under the nation’s gaze, the Trotters will find it difficult to pick themselves up. The second, however, can be found in the words of Owen Coyle, speaking directly after the weekend game at Wembley:

”What we don’t want is to have this impact our season because we’ve been terrific up to this point and they’ve earned their right to be here. We’ve played well below what we’re capable of, but we must pick ourselves up for the final six games of the season. We’re in a good position in the league and we want to finish strongly.”

Either way, Bolton have their work cut out as they square up to a pair of tricky fixture that sees them host Arsenal before travelling to Fulham.

The Prospects

Coyle’s side take on Arsenal at the Reebok and with The Gunners pretty much out of the title race barring a minor miracle, both sides will be looking for a pick-me-up. Arsenal have the best away record in the division this term but Bolton have been impressive at home of late, winning their last four in a row, chalking up three clean sheets in the process.

The second game of the double is no easy task, either. Fulham’s home form has been exceptional since the turn of the year; five wins and a draw in six games -with five clean sheets thrown in for good measure- makes Craven Cottage a fortress for Mark Hughes’ side. Bolton’s away form has been truly woeful for a considerable time, now; they have lost eight of their last nine on the road, failing to score on five occasions and never scoring more than once.

The Likely Lads

Realistically, defensive returns look unlikely this weekend; Arsenal should score at least once and with Bolton having to record a single clean sheet on the road this season, Craven Cottage hardly inspires confidence in breaking that duck. Gary Cahill has picked up Bonus Points in each of his last four home games and with his eye for goal, looks the one to plump for at the back.

Martin Petrov has established himself in the Trotters starting XI following a stop-start season and has returned three assists in his last four games – he looks a stronger midfield proposition than the previously fancied Chung-Yong Lee. With six goals in eight games during his loan spell, Daniel Sturridge has been the star of the show for Bolton and was sorely missed in the Stoke defeat, due to being cup-tied. At 5.3, he’s a great cut-price option and, given their next three fixtures are arguably against the most out-of-form sides in the top-flight right now (bla, SUN, blp), investment now may set Fantasy Managers up for the next few gameweeks beyond this double.

Cheeky Punts

A glance at the top-scoring forwards in FPL will show that both Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies sit in the top ten. With one goal in thirteen and eighteen games respectively, however, it’s understating the matter to say that they are both out of sorts right now, with much of these points racked up in the first few months of the season. This recent form suggests selecting either of the pair would be no more than a punt.

Due to the outstanding displays of Daniel Sturridge, Owen Coyle seems to favour Elmander in a midfield role right now, and although this has limited his returns, the Swede has picked up two assists and four Bonus Points in his last five games.

Davies’ recent returns are one assist and 2 Bonus Points in his last two games but with his spot-kick duties still intact and tendency to impress the Bonus judges (he is sixth-top forward for Bonus) he may well find himself amongst the points.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    My double gameweek rant...

    Attack
    - Bolton average 1.4 goals per game. 1.9 at home and 0.9 away.
    - Stoke average 1.2 goals per game. 1.6 at home and 0.9 away.
    - Wolves average 1.1 goals per game. 1.5 at home and 0.75 goals away.
    - Fulham average 1.1 goals per game. 1.4 at home and 0.8 goals away.

    Defence
    - Fulham concede 1.1 goals per game. 1 at home and 1.2 away.
    - Stoke concede 1.3 goals per game. 1 at home and 1.6 away.
    - Bolton concede 1.3 goals per game. 1.2 at home and 1.5 away.
    - Wolves concede 1.8 goals per game. 1.6 at home and 1.9 away.

    Conclusions
    - Wolves’ defence is considerably looser than the other 3 and always seems likely to concede both home and away so I would steer clear of their defence. The only consolation may be that they have Fulham in their home game and Fulham are equally as goal shy as Wolves so a 0-0 is a possibility in the game. Attack wise I’m not convinced their double is that lucrative as Stoke have a fairly miserly defence at home, and as I mentioned their home game (FUL) doesn’t seem set to be a highscoring affair. I’ll be dodging Wolves like the plague.

    - Bolton are the most free scoring team home and away and by that logic would seem the best bet for attacking returns. However once you weigh this against the difficulty of their double it may be better to back Stoke’s attackers instead. Really it’s a case of ‘To Sturridge’ or ‘not to Sturridge’. Bolton get the lion’s share of their goals at home (basically 2 per game) but the home game against Arsenal is very tough and I think they might struggle to score 1 nevermind their average of 2. Considering that in their away game they’re up against a tight Fulham defence, goals may again be hard to come by. I think if you bring in Sturridge this week, you need to take a long-term view that his points will likely come in the following 3 gameweeks rather than this one… for that reason it still looks like a sound transfer. Like Wolves I don’t think their defence is worth even a first look nevermind a second. They’re more likely to get a cleanie away (ful) than in the home game (ARS) but neither seem a good bet to me. Sturridge or nowt it is then.

    - Although Bolton have scored more goals this season, Stoke’s double is a lot easier on the eye and they are the next best goalscorers from the 4 DGW teams. The away game to a leaky Villa defence isn’t bad but for me their home game to Wolves is the easiest that any of the 4 DGW players face. You’d have to fancy them to get something against a Wolves defence that concedes 2 goals a game on the road so Walters/Ethers/Jones look a good bet for the double and especially for that home game. The only drawback is unlike Sturridge getting a Stoke attacker is a fairly short-term move. Stoke are quite a tough defensive unit at home (as tight as Fulham) so a cleanie in that Wolves game is also a distinct possiblity. Huth is therefore an option but if you’re getting a DGW defender in I’d go Fulham. Stoke attacker = optional, Stoke defender = Go Fulham instead.

    - Defensively Fulham are the tightest team. They have the tightest defence away and joint tightest at home with Stoke. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility they could come away with two cleanies in their double, in fact I’d fancy them more likely to get a cleanie in their away game (wol) than their home game (BOL). If you get a DGW defender it has to be a Fulham one. Contrary to all of the Zamora/Dempsey love recently, I don’t know if a Fulham attacker is essential. They only average 1 goal a game this season. I think they’ll struggle to score in their away game to Wolves which for me will be a tight affair. I do however expect them to get a goal or two at home to Bolton. For me a Fulham defender = essential, a Fulham attacker = optional.

    - These stats are most likely a load of cack and of no use whatsoever πŸ™‚ but feel free to use/abuse them.

I have opted for Ethers and Ohara (season keeper) but that has resulted in a 4 point hit. Would you bring in a fulham defender for another 4?

        I'd have to say no.

I probably should have mentioned it in the article but I don't think that any of the DGW players are worth a 4pt hit to bring in. It just seems like an unnecessary risk.

But yes for me a fulham defender, most likely Hangelaand is the best prospect this week. It's only an opinion though.

After Tuesday night's game I have my doubts. Valencia and Park are due a game.

After much deliberation though I fancy Nani to start for 3 reasons:
            - Park will be saved for the Schalke game.
            - Giggs will most likely need rested.
            - Fergie likes to go on the attack at home and Nani's a flat track bully at OT.

So... you're banking the transfers this GW?

Was thinking of doing R. Johnson to Hangeland, but might as well bank it and field Baines, Luiz, Walker with Dembele and Begovic the only DGWers.

    Plan A:
    Baines - Hangeland
    Nasri - Dempsey
Zigic - Suarez and bench SEB.

    Plan B:
    Baines - Hangeland
Nasri - Dempsey and play SEB

    Plan C
    Baines - Hangeland
    Nasri - VDV
    Nani - Dempsey.

which one is the better plan?

    Guys 2 decisions
    1) Ethers or Walters
    2) Jarvis or O'Hara

Key in this decision will be set pieces. Not sure if the set pieces tab on this website is completely updated. Do any of these take SPs for their teams?

Am I right in saying that Ethers takes pens, some FKs and most corners? Jarvis takes corners and Hara/Walters nothing?

    Quite simple, really. Two options.

    A. Nasri and R. Johnson OUT, Etherington and Hangeland IN.*
    B. Nasri OUT, Etherington IN.
    C. Nasri and R. Johnson OUT, Etherington and Kolarov IN.

    * Option A would mean bringing in Kolarov (or another City defender the following week.

Care to share if you rate Dawson over Kolarov, as well.

Or I could just roll the transfer over and field this XI:
        Begovic
        Baines, Luiz, Walker
        Nani, Adam, Fabregas, Nasri
        Drogba, Dembele, RVP (C)

Need some advise on my team:

    Al-Habsi (Foster)
    Luiz Vidic Walker (Coleman) (Kelly)
    Barton Nani Fabregas Adam Lampard(C)
    RVP Carroll (Odemwingie)

I have 1.4M in the bank.

I'm planning to do Al-Habsi to Begovic (No Hit) good move?

I'm willing to make one or two more transfers which would be for a hit but not sure on who to bring in and who to take out. Was thinking about Hangeland, Etherington or Walters and Zamora but not sure who to take out to make it worthwhile. Next week and the week after I will be working to bring in Spurs and Man City players too e.g. Kolorov, VDV etc.
