As the Britannia celebrated their heroes homecoming following last weekend’s FA Cup Semi Final win, Stoke steamrollered a pitiful Wolves to climb into the top half of the table and virtually seal their top-flight survival. Over in Schalke meanwhile, Man United won at a canter, controlling the match from the first whistle to last in a game that could have been embarrassing for the hosts but for the efforts of Manuel Neuer in goal. Here’s the notes from last night’s action…

Kenwyne Jones
The Stoke hitman is peaking just at the right time for Tony Pulis’ side; Jones scored for the third league game in succession, a remarkable upsurge in form considering he had managed one goal in his previous sixteen. With his goal at Wembley factored into the equation, Jones is proving his importance for Stoke ahead of the remaining games of the season, and a trip to Blackpool this weekend will certainly offer more chances to keep up the scoring run. There follows (ARS, mcy) before a home tie with Wigan sees out the season.

Matthew Etherington
As last night’s post reported, Etherington pulled up on the half hour mark with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and was immediately replaced by Dean Whitehead. For Stoke, Etherington has been second-best only to Robert Huth for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points and his absence-if confirmed- will come as a big loss to the Potters. After the match, Tony Pulis only had this to say:

“We’re worried about Matthew and what damage he’s done to his hamstring. We’re hoping and praying he’ll be fit. He’ll have a scan on Wednesday.”

We’ll be sure to keep you informed when, or if, any news transpires today. With Etherington sidelined, Pulis is likely to turn to Whitehead to come into central midfield with Rory Delap shifting to the left flank. Danny Pugh is another option available here.

Pulis is at least getting a big contribution from the opposite flank; Jermaine Pennant grabbed a goal, an assist and picked up all 3 Bonus Points for a Fantasy haul of 14 FPL points.

Wolves Stay Grounded
A win would’ve propelled them out the drop zone but Wolves never look likely to take anything from this game. That six-match run from gameweek 26-30 which saw Mick McCarthy’s side plunder 11 points has been followed by just 1 point from the next four fixtures. Big Mick could only admit post-match:

“We were well beaten. It was very surprising we weren’t at it tonight. If it wasn’t for Wayne Hennessey the scoreline would have been more embarrassing.”

With all four remaining games against sides in the bottom half of the table (bir, WBA, sun, BLA) Wolves can at least take solace in the fact that the other four teams in the bottom five are playing just as poorly.

United on Easy Street
Six away Champions League game have produced six clean sheets but none could have been more straightforward than last night’s. With Rio Ferdinand alongside Nemanja Vidic in the heart of defence, Alex Ferguson’s side coasted through the game and would have ran out far more convincing winners if not for Schalke’s outstanding keeper, Manuel Neuer.

Perhaps with this Sunday’s game at Arsenal in mind, rotation came into play; Fabio started at right-back, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick began in central midfield and Nani was benched, with Antonio Valencia and Ji-Sung Park the preferred wide men for the visitors. Having assisted his side’s three previous goals in the competition, Giggs once again proved his class on the big stage, grabbing the opener after a superb Wayne Rooney through ball. Rooney then bagged the second shortly afterwards and United saw out a victory that means they practically have one foot in the final.

After the match, the United manager did confirm Giggs will be rested for the trip to the Emirates, an indication of his thinking ahead of the crucial showdown with Arsene Wenger’s side. Given the fact that United do not need to go for three points against either Arsenal or Chelsea, we could see the 4-5-1 formation make a return against the Gunners. That could either see Javier Hernandez dropped to the bench or starting up front with Rooney patrolling a flank. One thing looks certain, Ferguson’s future rotation is likely to be tempered by the fact that United go into their second-leg with Schalke with a comfortable lead.

While Ferguson beamed with satisfaction after the commanding victory, Pep Guardiola lost the plot in a foul-mouthed rant aimed at Jose Mourinho ahead of the other semi final tomorrow evening. Clearly, squeaky bum time has found its way to the Nou Camp.

Excellent goalkeeping performances are always partly down to the finishing, but yesterday it was also very much down to how quickly he got close to the finisher and made himself big. It was a truly special performance in my opinion.

got lost on last page...meant to put this here.

    Re silva versus YaYa

I’ve just checked some recent homes games against weaker opposition and Silva edges it slightly over YaYa

    Silva – Sunderland 10, Wigan 11, West Brom 7

    YaYA – sunderland 12, wigan 8, West Brom 3.

arguably West Brom are tougher under Woy, but sunderland and wigan give a good indicator of typical pts to expect against West Ham.

I've seen it, quite a big deflection on the cross...I think it'll stand as it was still a cross, different to a deflected shot. If you see FF updating expect Whelan's assist to be the one that's removed, that one is not an assist. See for yourself!

Have you caught up a bit Til since geting rid of Nani? Mine has actually increased and he kept Smalling and will get Coleman's 6pts this week so it's all about trying to consolidate 2nd (€300) for me now.

Yeah did well this week, so long as Sturridge does nowt I'd have caught up twenty odd points over the ones above me.
Binning Nani has worked pretty well all in all. €300 is a nice little haul, we're not playing for cash just bragging rights. Good job really as this ringer that only one fella knows joined this season and is romping it. The fecker.

Ha, if I'm 2nd by then I'd be awfully tempted. He's in the Total FPL leagues and all that so he's nerding it up as bad as me.
Annoying as well, the league is set up for past or present archaeologists and he's just someones fecking cousin, never dug a hole in his life. 👿

I was thinking about the Balotelli thing, and there is just too much risk attached. I think Suarez (c) for next gameweek then VDV or Silva for the following.

For lashing out the cash. Pav is a risk but a 5.8 one and I really think he will play both given his current form and appearances. Balotelli should play both but after his pretty poor efforts last week and Dzeko breaking his duck it's a bit more unreliable.
Basically if I bought Balo I'd want to (c) him, and its a risk too far.

          True that.

Worrying about someone starting 2 games hasn't gone very well for me recently. Didn't get Drogba in for the double for that reason and captained nani over Berbatov when he scored 5 goals in a double. Both times because of the starting issue.

Think that means I should go for Pav too!

Lampard is staying in my team for now. He's arguably fixture proof and is doing what he does best at the mo, sneaking a cheeky goal through a quick burst from midfield and attracting the attention of bonus judges.

            I can.

Downgrading Lamps to Malouda allows me to do Adam to VDV. That means, for GW36 i could have:

            Silva/Kuyt, Yaya, VDV, Fabregas, Malouda.

I'll be Keep him for this week, and getting rid the week after. There should be goals in the Chelsea Spurs game I think, both teams have to win to stand any chance of the title/4th place. Open game I'd predict.

Yep, i'll be keeping him for the Tottenham game, but might be downgrading him to Malouda after. Malouda has been getting in more goalscoring positions anyway.

Right peeps, need your suggestions please. After a dreadful last month or so, peaking with Luiz (C) last week I find myself 50 pts adrift of the country league leader. Hits strategy to close the gap hasn't really worked. What trades might help me close the gap. My team is:

    Mignolet (Begovic)
    Luiz Cashley RJ Huth Djourou
    FloMo Adam Walters Clint VdV
Hoilett RVP Rooney 4.6 in bank.

er...really tough, if I had a gun to my head I'd probably blurt out "Drogba". Depends on who else you have. I'd say Drog, as I have Lamps. RVP has to stay...he is Arsenals goals at the moment. Rooney on pens and being less at risk than Drogs of rotation also sways it.

Man City and Spurs double is really confusing matters on transfers this week and next!

Ideally I want Hart, but I should probably get rid of Smalling, maybe for Lescott.

Anyone else considering of getting rid of Lampard NEXT week?!

If I get rid of Lampard instead of Nani I can do these moves over the next 2 weeks

    Lampard Etherington Begovic Zamora OUT

    Silva Balotelli Hart VDV IN

I'd have to take Lampard out this week realistically which is slightly annoying. Otherwise I can only make the Balotelli transfer this week.

So might go 8 pointer this week, no pointer next. But it means losing Lampard against Spurs which doesn't seem like a great transfer

No, it's not a great transfer. Lampard could easily score very well against Spurs.

Yeah losing Nani means I'd have to miss out on Silva and get Yaya instead. I was going to get rid of Nani last week but benched him instead. I think he'll play against Arsenal but not expecting many returns.

    Foster

    Luiz R johnson Carr

    Nani Lampard Adam Wilshire

    Carroll Rvp Torres

    Subs:Begovic,Djourou,Barton,Smalling

Two free transfers,0.2 in the bank.

    Was thinking this week: Nani>Silva
    Wilshire>Yaya
    Rvp>Suarez

Any advice for this week all welcome.

Interesting. Valencia has to play in 4 out of 5 of the remaining league games to warrant getting a medal. Wonder if SAF actually cares about this at all.

He'll undoubtedly get some Martin Keown-style token appearances to boost his number of appearances in the league up to 10.

Anyway, in normal circumstances he'd probably feature in 4 (if not 5) of the next 5 games.

Anyone else have an aversion to getting loan players in? I don't know why but I always seem to avoid them, it worked out fine to start with but now its starting to hurt. Bentley I was fine about leaving, then Sturridge began destroying now Pennant...anyone else tend to just ignore them or is it just me?

with 0.0 in bank, i can do simpson/dempsey out for yaya/kolarov in, leaving 0.0 again. or huth/nani for silva/lescott. both -4

or i can get one of nani->silva, demspey->yaya, then bring in huth->lescott for the double. no hit

or bring in both city mids now for nani/dempsey and bring in lescott next week. -4

i swear these options are creating more confusion than Lescott's hairline. Any suggestions?

First one. Although Silva is the man. But I reckon Yaya, Kolarov + 4 (i.e. no hit) will garner you as much points as the other options.

what about yaya and silva in for nani/dempsey -4 now,

then just huth to kolarov next week. with arsenal and city coming for huth, plus the cup, hes either gotta go this week or next.

although bringing in 2 city mids this week would all but rule out any plans to get tevez if he were somehow ready for the double.

with newcastle nome to birmingham next week, if i just did dempsey to yaya, i could drop huth instead of simpson next week, get the more nailed on defender with the extra cash, plus allows me to still use huth away to blackpool this week, clean sheet nearly impossible but a good environment for a goal i should think.
