As the Britannia celebrated their heroes homecoming following last weekend’s FA Cup Semi Final win, Stoke steamrollered a pitiful Wolves to climb into the top half of the table and virtually seal their top-flight survival. Over in Schalke meanwhile, Man United won at a canter, controlling the match from the first whistle to last in a game that could have been embarrassing for the hosts but for the efforts of Manuel Neuer in goal. Here’s the notes from last night’s action…

Kenwyne Jones
The Stoke hitman is peaking just at the right time for Tony Pulis’ side; Jones scored for the third league game in succession, a remarkable upsurge in form considering he had managed one goal in his previous sixteen. With his goal at Wembley factored into the equation, Jones is proving his importance for Stoke ahead of the remaining games of the season, and a trip to Blackpool this weekend will certainly offer more chances to keep up the scoring run. There follows (ARS, mcy) before a home tie with Wigan sees out the season.

Matthew Etherington
As last night’s post reported, Etherington pulled up on the half hour mark with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and was immediately replaced by Dean Whitehead. For Stoke, Etherington has been second-best only to Robert Huth for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points and his absence-if confirmed- will come as a big loss to the Potters. After the match, Tony Pulis only had this to say:

“We’re worried about Matthew and what damage he’s done to his hamstring. We’re hoping and praying he’ll be fit. He’ll have a scan on Wednesday.”

We’ll be sure to keep you informed when, or if, any news transpires today. With Etherington sidelined, Pulis is likely to turn to Whitehead to come into central midfield with Rory Delap shifting to the left flank. Danny Pugh is another option available here.

Pulis is at least getting a big contribution from the opposite flank; Jermaine Pennant grabbed a goal, an assist and picked up all 3 Bonus Points for a Fantasy haul of 14 FPL points.

Wolves Stay Grounded
A win would’ve propelled them out the drop zone but Wolves never look likely to take anything from this game. That six-match run from gameweek 26-30 which saw Mick McCarthy’s side plunder 11 points has been followed by just 1 point from the next four fixtures. Big Mick could only admit post-match:

“We were well beaten. It was very surprising we weren’t at it tonight. If it wasn’t for Wayne Hennessey the scoreline would have been more embarrassing.”

With all four remaining games against sides in the bottom half of the table (bir, WBA, sun, BLA) Wolves can at least take solace in the fact that the other four teams in the bottom five are playing just as poorly.

United on Easy Street
Six away Champions League game have produced six clean sheets but none could have been more straightforward than last night’s. With Rio Ferdinand alongside Nemanja Vidic in the heart of defence, Alex Ferguson’s side coasted through the game and would have ran out far more convincing winners if not for Schalke’s outstanding keeper, Manuel Neuer.

Perhaps with this Sunday’s game at Arsenal in mind, rotation came into play; Fabio started at right-back, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick began in central midfield and Nani was benched, with Antonio Valencia and Ji-Sung Park the preferred wide men for the visitors. Having assisted his side’s three previous goals in the competition, Giggs once again proved his class on the big stage, grabbing the opener after a superb Wayne Rooney through ball. Rooney then bagged the second shortly afterwards and United saw out a victory that means they practically have one foot in the final.

After the match, the United manager did confirm Giggs will be rested for the trip to the Emirates, an indication of his thinking ahead of the crucial showdown with Arsene Wenger’s side. Given the fact that United do not need to go for three points against either Arsenal or Chelsea, we could see the 4-5-1 formation make a return against the Gunners. That could either see Javier Hernandez dropped to the bench or starting up front with Rooney patrolling a flank. One thing looks certain, Ferguson’s future rotation is likely to be tempered by the fact that United go into their second-leg with Schalke with a comfortable lead.

While Ferguson beamed with satisfaction after the commanding victory, Pep Guardiola lost the plot in a foul-mouthed rant aimed at Jose Mourinho ahead of the other semi final tomorrow evening. Clearly, squeaky bum time has found its way to the Nou Camp.

It seems to me, and I could be totally wrong, that Spurs defend better against the better teams. Hence I rate their cleanie chancies in the coming weeks and am eyeing up Gomes or Dawson, probably Gomes. Am I crazy?

Who would you bench this week out of the following front 8?

    Adam, vdv, Fabs, Silva, O'Hara

Having looked at his stats and realised that he didn't have a shot on target last weekend, I am really not sure he is worth his price tag. A player over 8m has to promise a decent haul every now and again instead of assists and 2 pointers. I know he got the assist and BP's two games ago, but the reason I have him is because he is "the main man", if Carroll isn't fit this weekend Kuyt is awful tempting on current form.

Before the GW started, no, I don't think so. I was thinking all he needs is one assist or goal over the 2 games to give him 7/8 points, respectable for (c). There can't be many players with better points per minutes on the pitch.

In one of my mini-leagues, 4 out of the top 5 captained him.

Next season is going to be excellently competitive.

Utd: Will strengthen with '2 or 3 signings' in the summer to compliment the existing squad.
Chelsea: Torres will have a pre season to figure out where he should be playing, and Chelsea will buy further.
City: If they get CL football they'll spend through the roof again.
Liverpool: Dalglish is only a few signings away from an excellent squad.
    Spurs: 'ARRY!
Arsenal: Reckon Fabs will be sold and Wenger will buy 3 excellent (french probably) talents to replace him and sort out the problems they have.
ITFC: Will get promoted to the premier league. Watch the f*ck out all of the above.

    Roll on 2012.

Premier league won't allow the potential risk of swine flu/aids to the rest of the population. Norwich will be relegated to the blue square, a permitter set up around the city and hopefully nuked into history. At least that's what they say will happen in the country pubs.

            Wise words.

Because you live in australia the news that Grant Holt was arrested for multiple acts of bestiality won't have filtered through yet. The traditional punishment is a kick in the nads from 15 shire horses. Let's see how he performs after that.

        I dont really .
I find it disturbing thatn when anyone in this case Pep defended himself correctly (some paper made up quotes saying he attacked a correct decision by the ref - which he never said) its a rant.
Mourinho used an article with fake quotes which he knew was such to comment on pep. What makes it worse is as Pep pointed out they two managers knew each other for years and have never had anything personal - and obviously Jose knew it was boll#X.

So again i ask how is it hypebole if i said you said X, when you never said it, i know you would never said so a thing and you defend yourself.

Mourinho however great his record is and of course it is amazing is a rat of the worst variety. His behaviour on so many things has been plain bizarre. Pep summed it up well this nonsense that mind games are important or anything
"you think after this players will run around more and try harder? - its a semi final"

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for a little advice. My team is:

    Foster, Robinson
Alcaraz, Huth, R Johnson, Coleman, Walker
    O'Hara, Nani, Young, Brunt, Lampard
    Zamora, Odemwinge, RVP

    I'm looking at one of:
    O'Hara to Silva
    Alcaraz to Kolorov
or Zamora to some other striker (max 12.6m ) - maybe Balotelli

I want to bring in Silva, but I like the look of my midfield for the coming game week.

    Any thoughts?

to be fair it shows how lucky this game can be as i did post last week that i was concerned about this gameweek having no wolves or fulham but that i didnt want them after this week so was hoping to get away with not losing much ground this week and being setup for the rest of the season

then i go n have the best week ive had!

So how much will Utd season ticket holders have to pay for tickets? I know my cousins going to be going but I haven't been talking to him yet.

      ridiculous amount probably.
Went to UEFA cup final in Manchester 3 years ago at tickets were only £35.
I know it was only the UEFA cup but still very reasonable

Jesus that was brilliant, that's my point though as a season ticket holder they're not gonna be that dear compared to neutral tickets are they

Thought about Kuyt, Stoke looked tight at the back so not Adam. West ham are bad and City at home makes me think Silva
