As this 2010/11 season has progressed, the displays of David Silva become more assured with every passing game. There was no questioning the Spaniard’s ability when he joined Man City from Valencia at the start of the season, it was more a question of a tricky settling-in period for a diminutive playmaker less accustomed to the physical rigours of the Premier League.

A look at Silva’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points is fairly indicative of his debut campaign; up until the end of January, he’d played 22 games, scoring 1 goal, picking up 5 assists and 7 Bonus Points for a return of just 74 points, averaging just 3.3 points per game. For a player who started the FPL game priced 9.0 back in August, it was something of an understatement to view Silva as poor value in terms of Fantasy Investment.

Since February, however, the Spaniard seems to have found his feet within both the league and Roberto Mancini’s Man City system. The past 9 games have seen score 3 goals, pick up 3 assists and 11 Bonus Points for a 56 point return, or 6.2 ppg, more or less double his previous output.

Last Sunday’s home win over West Ham saw Silva at the heart of so many Man City moves, with a fantastic display that could have brought home far more than just 7 points for his Fantasy Owners. As our Members can see, this was far and away Silva’s most influential performance of the season and it seems that, in the absence of Carlos Tevez, his importance to City has only increased. Here’s a look at his displays in the last two home games, with and without Tevez.

This Average Position map shows Tevez (32) playing far up the field in the Sunderland game. Silva is just obscured by Mario Balotelli (45), who started in the middle of the front three, with Yaya Toure (42) fielded in defensive midfield.

Against West Ham, Silva (21) is virtually in the same position, but the crucial difference here is Balotelli. Playing as the lone forward on Sunday, the Italian’s position, rather than being similar to Tevez, shows a different interpretation of the role, as he played far deeper than the Argentine.

This meant that when in possession there was no Tevez to play forward to and Silva, popping up all over the pitch, became the main outlet time and again. Yaya Toure, back in his familiar berth at attacking central midfield, was City’s most forward player on average, as his endless energy saw him bomb forward and cause the Hammers problems from deep. City kept the ball much better, and had 60% possession against West Ham compared to 50% against Sunderland.

A look at Silva’s passing chalkboards in the two matches is revealing. He made 43 passes against Sunderland but against West Ham his distribution almost doubled, as he made 75 passes in an altogether more threatening performance, despite the match finishing 2-1 to the hosts.

A look at City’s shots also confirms they had more attempts in the West Ham game, with 21 shots (5 blocked) compared to 16 shots (5 blocked) versus Sunderland. Silva, in particular, managed 4 shots against the Hammers but just 1 in the Black Cats demolition, another example of an increase in his attacking potency.

With Tevez still only rated 50-50 for the FA Cup Final and Edin Dzeko failing to make much of an impression, it appears Balotelli is likely to continue leading the line for City, a good omen, perhaps, for Silva Fantasy Owners ahead of the upcoming double gameweek (eve & TOT) and beyond (STK, bol). Let’s hope the City boss chooses not to follow up on his weekend hint of rotation, then.

Help appreciated guys. I've lost a lot of ground (30pts) on my rival the last 2 weeks due to my persistence with Carroll.

    Carroll --> A) Dembababa or B) Sturridge
    C) Lamps or D) Fabs --> VDV. (I have RVP but not drogba)

My rival has Adam so I was thinking of getting rid of him for Yaya (8pt hit). Worth it? Cheers.

I would wait to find out if Dalglish mentions anything about Caroll starting. If not Caroll -> Strurridge (if fit) is a sound move.

You have RVP so I would do Fabs -> VDV (-4)

Adam -> Yaya is a bit tougher. He has a tough DGW but could score 10 points plus and Adam and blackpool have tough fixtures and are out of form. Would go Adam -> Silva if money allows it.

    Hi,

Please help!!!......Who to bench this week?

    Silva, Young, Yaya, Modric, Malouda
    Odemwingie, Drogba, Van Persie

Was planning on dropping Drogba but having second thoughts to may be Modric now (Already made a rash 'drunk' transfer for a 4 point hit!)

all this vdv talk takes me back to what i was saying sunday- vdv is majorly unfit, fat and waddling around like a 40 year old saving his legs in an indoor 5 a side. and spurs have enough to beat blackpool without him.If i was manager, id rest him, keep him for games i couldnt win without him. Hence why im hesitant to get him this week

Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that not having him isn't such a bad idea. It is in my opinion. Just 1 penalty could = 10 points if you've captained him, like you're rival will. Could fall further behind. Who else would you captain?

that's just how he runs. he barely does any running and when he does it looks like he's smuggled one of sylvie's butt-plugs onto the pitch. that's why he will always score a hefty chunk of tottenham's goals and also why tottenham haven't improved at all since signing him

Hi lads. need some advice for the next GW's transfers:

    Foster Begovic
    Luiz Simpson Djourou Huth Kelly
    Silva Adam Dempsey VdV Nani
    Rooney VPersie Suarez

I am willing to take a 4 point hit (only one free transfer)should I do:

    A) Rooney and Dempsey --> Kuyt and Balotelli
    B) Rooney and Dempsey --> Kuyt and Odemwingie
    C) Nani and Dempsey --> Kuyt and Yaya
    D) other options.

kuyt is in for all the options above, that is because a guy behind me in my mini league has only 15 point up to me and he has kuyt. but the both of us are chasing the top 3 in our leage (so therefore I maybe want to gamble with balotelli).

Righto, Currently lining up like this

      Foster, Bergovic

Luiz, Hangeland, Walker, Huth, R Johnson

      Nani, Adam, Walters Lampard, Silva

      Odemwingie, Rooney, RVP

      Thinking about doing

      Walters > Modric
Hangeland > Onuoha (Especially if he is going to play up front)

Not sure if it's worth the 4 point hit. About 10 points behind leader at the moment so this will set me back a bit more but happy to take a gamble.

Thoughts? I could also swap out Luiz to Onuoha and then do Walters to VDV.

i think they're where they are due to a very well oiled unit of players, as opposed to stars which pull them along. hoolahan seems to be a name banded about a bit, he was superb when i saw him play agaisnt watford for blackpool... but that was against watford

all good advice. I remember years ago seeing a young James Milner play on loan for Swindon versus Brighton. His level of play was so far advanced to the other 21 players on the pitch that it was obvious he would do well. Even against poor opposition if a player is that good then they are worth a look at fantasty football wise.

The FPL dream team last week was as follows.

      Al-Habsi
      Baines
      Zabaleta
      Salgado
      Davies
      Kuyt
      Olsson
      Kakuta
      Ramsey
      Suarez
      Fletcher

The only two players which were really talked about last week on here were Kuyt and Suarez! (and maybe Baines)

makes you wonder are we wasting our time! (he says are he continues to make speculative transfers on his other browser tab and ponders his captain choice)

Well no because you compare the average score overall with the the FFS or TotalFPL dreamteams and it's a lot higher. Aiming for the perfect score is never going to happen it's nearly always a flukey double figure score from a Fulham midfielder or something along those lines.

im only kidding really, the dream team is a one in a million shot.

id rather have 11 players getting 5-6 points each every week.

      OK so....

Has anyone ever seen Kolorov play?

I think i've seen him 4-5 times and he's been terrible everytime.

He is incredibly slow and seems to have poor positioning, a pretty bad mix. Anyone else think so? He's gets skinned rotten by average wingers.

He shoots on sight from 25 yards+ on a regular basis but doesn't ever challenge the goal. He's bagged 1 free kick which was a corker though.

Yes, he's in a City defence which is good but he won't get much more than clean sheets and even those he struggles with.

Add in rotation and he's a poor buy

To increase my position in FPL - ALL GO AND BUY HIM 🙂

Looks like you already are! Job done

You're gonna be real sorry the one week he bangs in a few goals.

Yeah, he has defensive faults, but that really doesn't matter on FPL if the team are still keeping clean sheets. He gets forward a lot and takes set-pieces.

You're just upset because you were unlucky with him earlier in the season.

Okay but look at it another way
He's a terrible defender who likes to shoot from 25+ yards and occasionally scores a screamer (one in the Europa league was a belter).
He's in a city defense which does pretty well even without his help.
        He's relatively cheap.
        Rotation is a fair point.
I'm not saying he's a great player, he's not but when Bale was a rubbish LB he was a good FPL pick.

131 points ahead in my mini-league; am I far enough ahead now I don't need to worry, or should I still be planning moves to keep ahead. Is there a bumper of points I'm looking to get to in the next GW to ensure a comfortable last two weeks.

      My team is;

      Foster/Schwarzer

      Luiz/Ivanovic/Bardsley/Huth/Nelson

      Kuyt/Lampard/Silva/Adams/Dempsey

      Zamora/RVP/Sturridge

Gonna transfer in VDV for Kuyt this week if it looks like Carrol will start for liverpool, otherwise take a 4 point hit for Dempsey/Ivanovic - VDV/MC defender.
