Spot the Differential

Seamus β€˜Ramos’ Coleman, Ahmed Elmohamady and Aleksandar Kolarov have all proved popular picks this season as a result of playing out of position (OoP), and after touting Stephane Sessegnon in last week’s differentials article, injuries and tactical shuffles have given us a couple more potential β€œOoP” picks to consider this week. If you’ve already got your fill of double gameweek players, perhaps we can tempt you with a differential or two….

Nedum Onuoha

Despite a strong performance against Wigan two weeks ago, the makeshift strike force of Sessegnon and Malbranque failed to make an impact in their defeat to Fulham last weekend, and Nedum Onuoha was thrown up front for the final 25 minutes as Steve Bruce desperately sought a way back into the game.

At 3-0 down this move was clearly an act of desperation, but the introduction of Onuoha up front made sense from a tactical point of view – Malbranque and Sessegnon are both under 5’8” tall and playing Onuoha gave Sunderland a presence in the final third that they had been missing up to that point. As it turned out, Fulham were rampant by this stage and his introduction made little difference but reports suggest that Onuoha could now play up front from the start against Bolton this weekend, and if this proves to be the case then he could be a very handy differential considering Bolton’s poor run of form. The on loan Man City defender can currently be picked up for 5.1m and is owned by 2.9% of all managers in the FPL game.

Stephen Ward

If Stephen Ward can retain his striker role alongside Steven Fletcher this weekend, he could be another strong β€œout of position” target considering Wolves’ fixtures. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has returned to training and McCarthy is hopeful that Doyle could still have a part to play this season, so banking on Ward playing up front may be a bit of a gamble. Even without attacking points however, three games against [WBA, sun, BLA] could still provide a decent return for 4.4m.

Ward is currently classed as a defender due to playing the last two seasons at left back, but he was bought by McCarthy as a striker and became a first team regular in that position in the second half of the 06/07 season, scoring four goals in his 11 starts. He looked a threat in last week’s derby game, and although he didn’t get on the scoresheet, it was his run into the box that earned them their early penalty.

Thomas Hitzelsperger

The last time Thomas Hitzelsperger made the differentials, he picked up a goal and an assist in an 11-point haul and with a home game against Blackburn this afternoon, we’re backing him to make a big impact again. Ok, he has managed just a single assist in the six games since then, but considering four of those were against Tottenham, Man United, Chelsea and Man City then that can probably be excused. Fixtures ease up considerably for the remainder of the season with [BLA wig SUN] possibly the easiest run in of any side in the league, so at 4.8m and with just 0.8% ownership then he looks a strong option.

A lot depends on how the team performs as a whole, but if West Ham get something out of the game then you can be pretty sure that Hitzlsperger will be involved somewhere. A look over his OPTA stats in recent weeks confirm just how influential he has become to the Hammers; In the last four games, he has had more attempts on goal (6) and more key passes (11) than the rest of the West Ham midfield put together.

Best of the Rest

Jonathan Spector is another β€œout of position” target, and should continue his role in the West Ham midfield in Scott Parker’s absence. He plays a more defensive role than Hitzlsperger but at just 4.1m and classed as a defender, he could be worth a look. Mikel Arteta returned to action last weekend, and slotted back into the left wing role that saw him pick up an assist and Bonus Points against Newcastle back in gameweek 29. Everton have won six of their last seven games against City, and Arteta could play a big part here again, despite conceding penalty duties to Leighton Baines. Finally, Shola Ameobi has somehow managed to string together a few games without picking up a serious injury, so at 4.1m he could be a decent option against struggling Birmingham if you’re short of funds for a striker option.

Chasing a big deficit currently and with Nani and Caroll risks to not start should I swap them out and who for. Thinking defoe and a.n.other. Any ideas???

Anyone else think arsenal have failed partly because their home crowd are so quick to moan, groan, mutter and splutter instead of getting behind their team? I especially find the sarcastic cheers I've heard them give their goalkeepers as plain stupid... way to boost someone's confidence!

It would also explain their great away form.

Agree 100% scored, teams need supports behind them but not actually on there backs. The Portsmouth fans always seem to me to be a great example in how to get behind your team even when things go tits up. I know you're Saints and this ain't a dig. πŸ™‚

To be fair I agree Portsmouth fans are good... so are saints fans. The reason saints survived so many relegation scraps is because we were ready for it and acted as the 12th man while some teams supporters got restless and disappointed by their team's struggle.

I remember about 12000 of us going to Wimbledon when I was a kid. We made it into a home game and won. First away win of season I think.

I am not bringing Defoe in but if I had to play catch up, I would even throw him the armband. It is a bit of a binary strategy but could pay off. Also, if he scores highly in the BLP game, it might guarantee him a game at City.

The fact was we played a system of 442 with no decent scoring midfielders. Bent can only play alone In fact i'm pretty sure 30% of his goals are pens?

If we would have had vdv n bale on form we would never have sold bent i dont think.

Harry redknapp is untouchable. He never gets any stick despite being so clearly selfish and only interested in his own success... always pushing chairmen to bend over slightly too far so he can get his short term results and then move on to a better job elsewhere.

That's why he has often left clubs in disarray.

I have Valencia and Lampard and fancy Valencia to get more points this week. However, my closest rival, who is 50 points behind, will be playing Lampard.

I suppose I should play Lamps to be defensive particularly as we only have three other players in common. Is this the right play?

As this is my first year of FPL, I would also be interested in what people consider a "safe" lead at this point in the season.

Safe beyond most reasonable doubt? 100 points. 75 should really be safe. 50 is most likely to be safe, but with bad luck or good for your opponent that can easily disappear in 2 weeks.

I agree in principle, which is why I have this dilemma. However, with only three GW left I can't really see any upside in taking the risk. Top 1,000 is out of reach, which is an obvious "milestone" and I am over the moon with my current position anyway. There is a few quid at stake too..

I would actually have Simpson as first sub, but there is not much in it.

Re: Sturridge. Nothing new. The fact that he is an on loan player suggests he won't be risked if not 100%. However, because of this, I reckon he will either play from the start or not at all. I am therefore starting him, with Lampard/Valencia first sub.

I wouldnt take a hit on getting Modric in. He will pick up 5-7 points max.

Would it be madness to bench Drogba this GW and play O'Hara instead?

Nani out for Modric is your gamble that could pay off. Yaya is a safer bet as you're spreading the risk in midfield. I don't see the merits of taking a hit for Sandro.

Sandro is not a good idea imo. Modric for Nani is decent.

Is the starting XI right?: Foster/Djourou-Simpson-Jiranek/VdV(C)-Silva-Lamps-Barton/Odem-Drogs-RVP. Subs:Al-Habsi,Luiz,Coleman,Adam.Only starting Jiranek because both Luiz and Coleman are duds, otherwise Birmingham have one cleanie in their last 7 games. And is it ok to have just two DGWers?Sorry for being stingy about space but I'm on my mobile right now.

Looks sound...I'd favour Luiz in for Jiranek because you have Foster in goal and your spreading the risk. Don't really see a cleanie for Brum at Newcastle and you're saying the same by starting Barton over Adam.
