The top billing clash saw United outclass Chelsea to leave them needing just a point from their last two games to claim the crown. Sunday’s support acts included a win for Stoke as they warmed up for their FA Cup Final against Man City by battering Arsenal. Botttom of the bill Wolves grabbed a massive win over rivals West Brom to leap out of the relegation zone. Here’s the notes from yesterday’s games…

Steven Fletcher
The Scotsman continued his recent good goal scoring form, grabbing a double to lift Wolves out of the bottom three with just two games remaining. Fletcher also picked up an assist and the 3 Bonus Points for a 16 point FPL return in the 3-1 home win over Midlands neighbours West Brom. He’s now scored 4 goals in his last 3 games and with (sun, BLA) left to play, Big Mick’s side can approach gameweek 37 with a much-improved optimism.

Matt Jarvis
The flying winger was surprisingly dropped to the bench by Mick McCarthy in Sunday’s win, with Stephen Hunt given the nod on the left flank with the impressive Adlène Guédioura on the right. Having been a key threat all season and with the Wolves Player of the Year accolade in his sights, the decision to drop Jarvis was a risky one by McCarthy. The Wolves boss had this to say post-match…

“In the last four or five games I don’t think Jarvo has been as effective.Previously he was just ‘Matt Jarvis – that lad from Gillingham who’s done alright. Then all of a sudden it’s ‘Matt Jarvis, England international’ and they all know that and people double up on him which has a bearing on it…I just thought Hunty was the man for the occasion.”

Jermaine Pennant
Stoke’s right winger has exploded into form in the last few gameweeks; good news for Tony Pulis, particularly with Matthew Etherington touch and go ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup Final. Playing at the Britannia seems to be bringing out the best in Pennant these days; his last five home games have brought three goals and five assists, for a score of 50 points.

Robert Huth
The big centre-half departed the proceedings just before the 50 minute mark, after falling awkwardly when attempting a header on the Arsenal goal. It’s reported Huth will have a scan on a knee injury some time today, though Stoke are positive that he’ll be fine for the big day out at Wembley next weekend.

Robin Van Persie
Last week’s deserved victory over Man United seemed a million miles away for Arsenal yesterday; the Gunners were second-best all over the part in their defeat to Stoke. Van Persie was the only player who can’t really be faulted by Arsene Wenger; this was the eighth away game in a row the Dutchman has scored but, for all his goals in this second half of the season, Arsenal continue to show a fragility at the back that proves time and again to be their undoing.

A Candid Wenger
The Arsenal boss was very open in his criticism of his side following the Stoke defeat. Again Arsene Wenger emphasised the issues in defence, stressing his sides obvious weakness at set-plays…

“We [have] conceded, I think, 21 from set-pieces and only 17 in open play. Less than anybody else in open play [but] we have been caught on set-pieces. Today, [Kenwyne] Jones didn’t even need to jump to head the ball in. That is something we have to correct.”

When asked whether his side had missed the influence of Thomas Vermaelen over the season, Wenger suggested that the defender – back on the bench at the Britannia – could make a return to the starting lineup for Arsenal’s remaining fixtures.

“I would love to have had him and maybe I can give him the last two games, I don’t know.”

Rotation Ahead at United
Needing just a point from their last games two games (bla, BLP) affords Alex Ferguson a license to rotate with the Champions League in mind. United will no doubt want to tie up the league next weekend at Blackburn and it‘s likely he’ll field a strong line-up for the Ewood Park. If the league‘s in the bag before the gameweek 38 match with Blackpool, though, there’s every chance United’s starting XI will be in the same vein of their midweek line-up against Schalke. As the Wembley Final against Barcelona is six days after the Seasiders‘ clash, Rooney, Hernandez, Vidic Ferdinand should all expect less game time in that final match of the season.

David Luiz
The Brazilian’s Fantasy owners will be concerned by his display and his withdrawal in yesterday’s game, with Carlo Ancelotti suggesting post-match that Luiz was still suffering the effects of a training ground injury. With Luiz considered at fault for the early Hernandez goal, Ancelotti had this to say on the situation…

“He had a little (injury) problem yesterday in training, we tried this morning and he said it was okay so I put him on the pitch…On the pitch, you can make a mistake…I was not angry because I took him out at the end of the first half but if I had 10 or 11 substitutions I wanted to use all the substitutions”

Ancelotti was clearly frustrated with his January signing and with Alex replacing Luiz from the bench, he would seem to be well placed to start the gameweek 37 fixture with Newcastle next time out. That would be a major blow given the clean sheet potential on offer in that fixture.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Personally what you said didnt bother me as you come across as a bit of a spoilt attention seeking child but no matter your ignorance, what you said was racist. Doesnt matter if you were just classifying the 'mugs' by the fact they were all from Ireland for simplistic reasons, but such comments have and will offend their targets. This isnt a defence for the other wierdo but just pointing out that just because you didnt think it was racist, doesnt make it not.

Listen lads, read my post. As I said just because the kid may not have intended to make his post seem racist, it did have racist connotations. Could you imagine next month if your queen next month on her visit, uttered such word in a debate. There would be uproar. However as i said i wasnt offended but i could see how some peopld were. The brevity of the msg was particularly ignorant as he seemed to dismiss the 3 lads opinions just due to the fact they were irish! Ps Ireland has itself a typical racist culture so i can see these things!!!!

Perhaps some end of season awards are in order?

    Something like:

Best poster for team advice, funniest poster, post of the year, angriest poster (probably not necessary to poll this one), your favourite scout, best new scout, your best transfer, your worst transfer, etc etc

      I like that idea.

My least favourite post was when my dog went missing and RBJ tried to convince me he had been kidnapped by Snatch style dog fighters to be used as "fighting fodder". I still have nightmares about it even though my dog was found within days alive and well.

OK I'll have a crack then:

Team advice: Probably Tosey, much of the time I wouldn't follow that advice as it doesn't fit my strategy but it's nice to have an unusual (but effective) take on things.

      Funniest poster: Soop

      Post of the year: Pass

      Angriest: Well obviously...

Favourite Scout: John Finlay, he's got a great writing style IMO.

Best New Scout: Clearly got to be John Finlay as well.

Best Transfer: VdV returning from injury in for Villa away for something like 15 points.

Worst Transfer: Jaaskelainen was a bit of a disaster around Xmas.

        Erm.

Funniest - dunno really, but some of Locarno's jokes he posts are funny. AB is a laugh too

Post of the year - "6 casual points clear"

Angriest - all the emo posts before games are over on a Saturday. Not angry, but still crack me up

Fav scout - probably Andy just because of Twitter, maybe Paulos

New scout fav - meh dunno, don't pay attention to who was new 🙂

Best transfer - VDV back from injury after Xmas or Young before his 18 point haul. Nothing great long term really

Worst transfer - getting rid of foster around the first Arsenal double. And getting rid of Caroll for Elmander when Caroll was doing so well.

Worst tranny: roon -> suarez gw31: suarez 2 pts, roon 17. (Since then though it's suarez 23 pts, roon 6:) )

There have been a few attempts at awards before. I reckon the best way to do it is set up an external webpage/voting thing and then have someone (or some people) link to it in their username. Otherwise it's only the people who happen to be online at the time who vote.

I say all this without volunteering to do it myself, of course.

28 points behind in my mini league and it'll be a miracle if I win it purely because my decision making the last few weeks has been nothing short of shambolic! Was looking forward to at least having a solid defence next week but that looks thrown to the wayside as well now with luiz and djourou's piss poor performances at the weekend

      Same defensive situation:

      Cahill (blp)
      Luiz (NEW)
      Djourou (AST)
      Walker (ars)
      Dawson (liv)

I'd planned to play the first 3 this week and I would have been happy with that, now I'm facing a hit for defenders or more likely I'll just play the others and accept the 1/2 points and hope theirs not many cleanies again.

I know mate, well I've at least got terry and bardsley but I had aimed to play terry, luiz and djourou. Djourou might still play mind you seeing as vermalen has been out something like 7 months! I'm hoping not to use a transfer this week so I have 2 for the final week. Took too many points hits recently.

Point hits for defenders rarely work, I think I'll probably start Luiz & Djourou because I'm guessin they'll either both play most the game or not at all. I'd be annoyed if I got rid and they played so I'd rather let my subs do the work if the worse happens.

Djourou might well get 60+ mins before being subbed for a vermaelen cameo? Unlikely he'll start and play 90s mins from scratch i would think?

Ill likely start him and luiz. might have to make sure ive got some decent subs or maybe bring in someone like terry for walker to cover my opponents likely doubling up on chelsea defence.

So I'm probably getting Nzogbia this week, like everyone! (i would have got him this week if I knew he was fit!)

I was thinking I wonder where he'll end up next season, honestly I'd quite like to see him at Liverpool.

I know he can be a bit of a wildchild but lets be honest, who wouldn't be like that playing for Wigan for that long?! I actually admire how hes played considering he obviously doesn't wanna be their long term but he's still put in the performances, that will obviously be to put himself in the shop window but I think he'd do well at Liverpool, we need that sort of player, in terms of a wide man with pace and trickery and I think Kenny could get him motivated and in the zone and he'd be a good player for us.

Good chance we'll go for him I reckon. Probably depends how much villa want for young as I think he'll be the main target. N'zogbia's at least as good imo and probably half the price. What about marvaeux? He's a left winger but I've not seen him play and I'm not sure if he's going to be a squad player or if he's good enough to be 1st choice.

I haven't seen Nzogbia loads this year but every time I have he's looked quality, always commits defenders, good delivery, can get goals. I'm not really fully convinced by Young. Personally I'd rather have Nzogbia for 12/15m than Young for 20/25m or whatever they'll go for.

I think that may be having a influence on his play lately. If he moves then next year he could be one of the few nailed on bargains around. However, for now he my likely transfer in for this week for Young.

I used to think he was very good, but he can be pretty wasteful and selfish. He's attempted far more dribbles than any other player in the league this season, yet his dribble completion rate is way below the likes of Nani and Nasri.

Also, for someone who contributes nothing defensively and is fairly ambitious with the ball, his goals and assist record isn't particularly impressive.

He is only 25 I think so he can improve still. I'm not surprised Nani & Nasri have that much better dribble success rate but realistcally they are both worth at least double what Nzogbia is.

His goals/assists record is good considering he plays for wigan and was out of form for a while due to being too busy sulking that he has to play for wigan. At a better club you'd expect his output to improve.
Remember when he used to play left back at newcastle? Not sure who's bright idea that was 😛

100% I'd say. Think he'll be looking to play a strong team and make early substitutions as opposed to resting main players completely. Can see silva being the biggest threat of rotation if anyone purely because he's pretty much essential to them at the moment and has run himself into the ground the last month or so

Have essentially got unlimited funds, but are next to no expensive players that I actually want to buy. It's people like N'Zogbia and Rodallega that I'm looking at most closely. Could have about 12 million in the bank after I make my changes this week.

One of the members has inexplicably pulled out. The last update I did on the spreadsheet is GW31 so without his team ID I can't fairly update it. So I suppose scoring finishes at GW31 then.

Why would you pull out of a league at this stage of the season?! 😕

Well there was a pretty high drop out rate at the start with people being over enthusiastic and joining everything going, but that was fine early days as I could fairly replace people with only limited effects on the league. The last three dropouts have been massively annoying though, one pulled out as he was having a hard time on here (not from me I must add) and wanted to clear out of any FFscout biz (he's back now though thankfully), and the other pulled out due to sheer malice in an attempt to sabotage the league due to a petty argument. Pathetic.
Thankfully I managed to get teamlinks to those two sides, but not the latest pull out and I don't even know what name they post under here. So it's pretty fecked. I won't be doing it again next season that's for sure!

Took a gamble on Ba this week (instead of Hitz in a coin toss situation) and it didn't really work out. I'm gonna have to stick by that though so Parker is off the menu for me.

During United's victory yesterday it really hit home to me how many excellent wide players are in that side. I'd say they have maybe 3 or 4 of the top 5 in the EPL.

I know I'm biased but to think they started with Valencia, Park and Giggs in midfield and still had Nani on the bench. Can you think of much better widemen than those 4?

Our remaining differentials still to play are...

He was injured and doubtful to play at all vs villa. At 1 all and desperately needing points I can't imagine the sub was tactical or precautionary. He probably aggravated the injury. All speculation mind.

Any suggestions as to what I could do with my free transfer this week with my below team?

    Foster (Freidel)
    Djourou, Distin, Bardsley (Luiz), (Hughes)
    VDV , Silva, Larsson, O'Hara, Adam (c)
    RVP, Torres (Zigic)

Play Hughes over Distin for instance?

If he's proved anything in his short time it is that defensively he is a liability. He gets caught out of position frequently and his challenges are sometimes wreckless and ill-timed.

The up side though is that he's technically very good in possession and has the ability to get forward. Invaluable in terms of FPL defenders this season, will it be next season? I dunno.

another up side is that he is still in the learning process and impressed for his half first season in the PL coming from portugal. defenders have a hard time adjusting to the PL
i see good things coming in the future and he's learning from the best

however for the FPL next season, i think alex's fitness will play a major part, a rotation like alex/carvalho for the big slow/pacy CB is a possibility with luiz

I reckon he'd make a good defensive mid. Better than mikel or essien and then alex and terry could play cb.

it might in case of emergency but i think mikel is palying more as ball playing defensive mid while luiz will play anchor, and he still need to learn (like he said) when to go for the ball and when to hold position because in portugal he used to always go for the player, and thats crucial for a defensive mid

If you're set on doing a defender then yep Baines makes sense as he does have that attacking threat. I'd be nervous about bringing in any players with little to fight for though and Everton are certainly in that category - they might roll over.

Your totally right, that was my theory this week playing jarvis over walters

But if u watched eve-mancity, everton played the game as if their life depends on it. You'd get the feeling that city has nthn to play for. (which is how they show up every game all season long, wonder what they can do if they get a manager that can really fire them up)

GW 38 is gonna be fantasy night mare. last year the title race was still on and was more predictable. It will be OMG with the team news. Honestly I don't have a clue what will happen. Anybody that remembers previous seasons in the last 5 years or something what is happening, except the relegation battle teams, everybody are playing with CC lineup right? But they could be punished for not playing the strongest side or? I mean "stars" like Lamps, RVP, DVD will be rested right? Maybe an article what the managers like Wenger, Moyes etc are doing in the last GW will be helpful.

    Cheers,

bayern are known to do business very slowly in the transfer market, and for a german player it is more important to play for bayern than for a leading PL team.

unlike any other league they are not attracted much by the PL, and bayern although they dnt pay much for transfer fees but they pay good salaries

It's just a tactic by Bayern to get him on the cheap, now that Neuer's made it clear that he wants to go to Munich. No more, no less.

          1. Tempted to get suarez for Bent...means benching Nani (check his away stats and this makes sense, also means I get to keep for poss home appearance v blackpool)

          2. or ditch Nani for Kuyt/NZog and bench Bent.
