There’s now just two gameweeks left of the 2010/11 season and the battle at the bottom is nowhere near decided, with the threat of Championship football next season still hanging over six teams. As matters further up the table afford some clubs a chance of squad rotation, there’s no such luxury for those in danger of the drop. Good news, then, for Fantasy Managers eyeing up a cut-price option for Gameweek 37.

A glance at this gameweek’s highest-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielders so far shows plenty of bargains to be had, with eight of the top ten scorers priced under 7.0. Gameweek 36 saw the bottom four clubs all grabbing at least a point in their fight for survival and, with that in mind, we analyse each of their star midfielders ahead of a crucial weekend, where big performances could be the difference between staying up or going down.

Charlie Adam: Price 5.8, Gameweek 36 Score=5pts

Pros
The Blackpool playmaker faces Bolton in what will, in all probability, be his final home game for the Seasiders. Bonus-magnet Adam will want to go out with a bang and the Trotters away form offers plenty hope for Ian Holloway’s side, having taken a paltry 1 point from their last 11 games on the road. With a visit to Old Trafford to follow, it’s essential Blackpool pick up the three points to have any hope of survival.

Cons
There’s no doubt Adam’s performances have tailed off lately; he has picked up just 18 FPL points in his last six gameweeks and has not been awarded any Bonus Points since gameweek 30.

Last Week’s Performance
Away to Spurs, Adam didn’t quite see the ball as much as usual, with Luka Modric stealing the show in midfield. When in possession, however, his distribution was not too impressive; 18 of his 46 passes were unsuccessful. Adam had 5 shots at goal, though, with his penalty duties accounting for 2 of these efforts.

Charles N’Zogbia: Price 5.5, Gameweek 36 Score=9pts

Pros
The Frenchman is really upping his game as Wigan push to beat the drop; 3 goals, 2 assists and 4 FPL Bonus Points in his last four league matches attests to that. The Latics face West Ham at home this weekend knowing a win would not only boost their own survival chances considerably, it would end the hopes of their relegation rivals and condemn Avram Grant’s side to the drop. Two wins, two draws and just one defeat in their last five at the DW Stadium should offer plenty hope for Roberto Martinez and co ahead of the crucial showdown, before a difficult visit to Stoke ends the season.

Cons
The only negative aspect of the last few weeks has been N’Zogbia’s game time; he’s finished the 90 minutes just once in his last nine fixtures. Having suffered a dead leg against Everton two weeks ago, there were doubts regarding his fitness ahead of last weekend‘s game at Aston Villa. In the end, Martinez gave him 70 minutes on Saturday but will continue to be careful with his main man.

Last Week’s Performance
N’Zogbia was deployed in the centre of a attacking midfield trio, as Wigan lined up 4-2-3-1 at Villa Park. With license to roam, he rarely stayed central, moving wide to link up with Victor Moses and Tom Cleverely time and again. In total, he made 37 Passes, with 10 Unsuccessful. N’Zogbia also had 2 Shots before departing the proceedings, but that was all he needed to grab a goal and 2 Bonus Points.

Thomas Hitzlsperger: Price 4.8, Gameweek 36 Score=9pts

Pros
The vital equaliser in the home draw with Blackburn was his first goal for seven gameweeks but it continues a pattern of impressive home scoring for Hitzlsperger; he has averaged 6.6ppg over his last five at Upton Park. The trip to Wigan is do-or-die time for the Hammers, with defeat sending them down a division. If Avram Grant’s side are still in with a chance of staying up, the final gameweek sees them host Sunderland at Upton Park.

Cons
West Ham have taken two points from their previous five away games, losing the last three on the trot. Hitzlsperger has played four games on the road this season, returning just 8 FPL points.

Last Weekend’s Performance
Stationed in central midfield with West Ham playing 4-3-3, Hitzlsperger was the Hammers main attacking threat; he had 5 Shots (though 3 were blocked) and made 58 Passes, with 40 Successful, as he tried desperately to inspire his side to victory in the clash with Steve Kean’s fellow-strugglers. Many of his corners were unsuccessful, but the German did play plenty of dangerous balls in and around the visitor’s final third.

Jamie O’Hara: Price 5.1, Gameweek 36 Score=3 pts

Pros
Wolves will be buoyed by the weekend win over West Brom that saw Mick McCarthy’s side jump out the bottom three. Despite their poor away form, a trip to Sunderland shouldn’t be too daunting for the Midlanders, given the Black Cats have lost five of the last six at home. A home tie with Blackburn in what could, potentially, be a winner-takes-all relegation shout-out is their final fixture of the season.

Cons
There’s no denying Wolves’ poor record on the road; they’ve managed just two wins away from Molineux all season, and have one point from their last three away games. They have scored more than one goal away from home just once since November. Since arriving in January, O’Hara has played six away games, averaging 4 ppg.

Last Weekend’s Performance
Wolves opted for a 4-4-2 against the Baggies, with O’Hara pivotal to their play in central midfield, pushing further forward than the wingers as Karl Henry stayed anchored in front of the back-four. He made 48 Passes all game, with 36 Successful, as he linked up with Stephen Hunt on the left wing to great effect. O’Hara also had 3 Shots at goal and was rewarded for his performance with 1 Bonus Point, overshadowed by the performances of goalscorers Steven Fletcher and Adlene Guedioura.

Hi all. Some advice please if anyone is still awake.

    Mignolet (Foster)

Luiz, Vidic, Baines (Kolarov, Johnson R)

    Jarvis, VdV, Malouda, Walters, Silva

    RvP, Odemwingie (Zigic)

Rival is 4 points behind and has Kuyt, Bent and Suarez. Should I do something drastic to get some Liver coverage (Kol + Zigic -> Carroll and Flanagan) or should I do something more conservative (e.g Zigic -> Fletcher)

    Thanks!!

Wouldnt be looking at Carroll.....if anything I'd try to cover Kuyt.....only reason I haven't done it yet is cause I hate, hate, hate him, but in all fairness, he's been on fire; don't see that stopping tbh.

Wouldnt do the option of a hit as Carroll missed the last game via injury. Plus Spurs are more than capable of scoring, u have too much money in ur defence for me. Not enough clean sheets to have that much money on that part of your team.

Not much he can do about that now in fairness....with only 2 games left, trying to get value out of your defense to elsewhere will result in too many hits at this stage of the game...

Ok, so no Carroll love. Fair enough.

My defence has won me many many gameweeks. Vidic and Baines both pinch goals regularly and I have the money to spread there because I only have the one expensive striker (Odem > RvP atm). Will think about Silva/VdV -> Kuyt.

      Thanks!

This whole 'you shouldnt have too much spent on your defence thing' is wrong and is only mentioned because last years winner had cheapos at the back.... Look where he is now..... Incase you dont know, he started doing badly so dropped out like a coward lol. There is no set formula. Stick to your guns sir.

Thanks for the replies - think you're on to something with Rooney for Drogba. I'm a little hesitant, since Abramovich obviously has a hard-on for Torres, but I could see him going wild.

Was also thinkg of VDV for Maxi, too. Would double me up on Liverpool mid-field, but with the form they're in and against a Spurs that doesn't have Bale or (from the looks of it) Modric, and with Gomes in goal, that could be a solid choice. I'm not sold on N'zogbia - think that's the road to disappointment, there.

I am completed confused this week! This is only my first season doing all this so having a very steep learning curve!

        Current team...

        Hart(Begovic)
        Luiz/Huth/Kolorov (simpson/smalling)
        Kuyt/Kalou/VDV/Silva (Adam)
        Rooney/Odem/RVP

I am only 11 points ahead at the mo but looking at making a 8pt hit...

        Kolorov > Baines (damage limitation)
        Adam > Maxi
        Rooney > Hernandez

rooney I think will play. SAF said he will play reserves versus blackpool, but he will keep one or two in. I reckon it will be a pretty strong team versus blackburn and smalling will play as well i think

baines is a toughy. he could do well again.

don't bench rooney (but i said that last week) gl

Some of the opinions say Silva out as ManC will rotate and might give much needed rest to some players. Is it possible that Silva gets his rest during hte FA cup match and comes back to play full 90 min in both league fixtures ?
I am also in same boat. Need to get in Nzog, but not sure who to kick out: VDV , Silva or Young ?

IMO highly unlikely that Silva sits - FA Cup match will be a priority, as CL spot is assured after Tot game.

Trophy to end the drought and add to Mancini's laurels.

    Hey Guys

I am 12 points in front after being 44 behind 2 weeks ago.

    Foster (Begovic)
    Luiz, Kolorov, Djourou (Johnson, Walker)
    Lampard(c), Adam, Yaya, Kuyt (VDV)
    RVP, Rooney, Odemwingie

Was thinking no trades and then assess after this week with two up my sleeve.

    Thoughts??????

That's a good squad, not much you could really improve on.
      Might play Johnson over Luiz.
Yaya- Nzog? better chance of scoring .
I have VDV and want to hold him for gw 38. But you could think VDV- Kuyt.
I'm tempted to ship out Rooney this gw for Suarez, because I think Suarez might outscore him over two weeks, and I don't think Rooney will get much time vs Blackpool, but I'm willing to chance it vs. Blackburn.

Righto lads. Morning from the other side of the world.

Chasing a lead and thinking of doing the unthinkable.

Going into this week I'll be looking at,

Silva, Lampard, Adam, Walters, VDV, Rooney, Odemwingie, RVP

    v.s

Kuyt, Walters, Modric, VDV, Yaya, Zamora, Drogba, RVP

I was initially thinking of doing Rooney to Suarez and Walters to N'Zogbia but then I realised that I'd be left with RVP when Rooney could easily do something to push United to the league. Fair enough he hasn't done anything for a few weeks now but he IS playing well and IS due a goal.

What about RVP out for Suarez to differentiate the teams a bit, I'd still do Walters to N'Zogbia and we'd be having a complete different front 8 since I'd be benching VDV.

We don't do well at home and Villa whilst not having the best defence in the league could put up a good show. Also RVP and his run of games playing let alone scoring has to come to an end soon. It's always too late when you wait for the run to end so why not try and predict it......

United could field a C team. This is the team that played Hull before the 2009 final:

        Kusckakczkckakzkcak

        Rafael
        Neville
        Brown
        De Laet

        Nani
        Fletcher
        Gibson
        Wellbeck

        Martin
        Macheda

Subs: Amos, Tosic, Possebon, Eckersley, C.Evans, Drinkwater, James.

          I reckon

Ku-shack (although, someone made a good point that VDS might be made captain for his last game at Old Trafford)

          Brown Smalling Evans O'Shea

          Obertan Gibson Anderson Bebe

          Berbatov Owen

I don't expect Rafael to be in the CL team so he may get the nod at RB or RM.

I would consider no trade and keep two for the last week, to replace Nani and another. Silva this week and Nani the next are your alternative. IMO. Just be careful to check on Terry and plan on Luiz not to start (he probably will though). You do have some 90% certain to start players, so I see your concern.

Has anyone actually got a link to Fergie saying he'll play a weak team against blackpool?

I'm wondering if the champions league game being on a saturday makes a difference.

Usually it's midweek, so Fergie would obviously rest players (As he did last time)

But I'm not sure players having 2 full weeks off is necessary - If anything they might get out of the zone. 6 days is surely plenty of rest time. (I know injuries are a factor but I think fatigue is usually the primary concern regarding rotation)

I really don't why everyone is saying that he will play a weak team when they haven't won the title, and need to wrap it up this week. If they lose to bburn, he will be forced into a must win situation and hence will have to play a strong squad.

    Foster (Hart)
Baines, R Johnson, Luiz (Kolorov, Huth)
O'Hara, Lampard (c), Kuyt, Yaya, (VDV),
    Odemwingie, Sturridge, RVP

    a) save to give 2 transfers next week
    b) Yaya to NZog
    c) Yaya > NZog & RVP > Suarez 4pt hit
    d) something else

Holding 3rd out of 30 by 35pts in one league (would need unlikely 51 pts to reach 2nd)

Other league I'm 4th but only 29 pts above the leader...

2 weeks to catch up 20 points on my league leader, down from about 70 a month ago.

    My team:

    Foster, (Begovich)
    Lescott, Luiz, Djourou, (Walker), (Simpson)
    Lampard, Silva, Adam, Kuyt, (VDV)
    Rooney, VP, Odem

    His:

    Foster, (Begovich)
    Luiz, Bardlsey, Hughes, (Huth), (Carr)
    Nani, Kuyt, Adam, VDV, (Ferguson)
    Drogba, Crouch, VP

Thinking of either of the following transfers:

    Rooney -> Suarez
    Silva/VDV -> N'Zogbia

    Worth it?
