With a lack of motivation and a nagging threat of rotation, player selection for the final two gamweeks of the season is a minefield of uncertainty for Fantasy Managers.

At least the relegation scrap looks poised to go into the final gameweek. Although that’s not certain, the battle for survival has prompted a sudden shift in sights away from the high-priced heavyweights contesting titles and European spots, to transfer targets commanding more modest fees and clinging to Premier League status.

This is duly reflected in our Watchlist player rankings, available to offer our guide on the recommended acquisitions for the season climax and viewable in your right-hand sidebar.

With clean sheets so scarce and difficult to predict, it’s no surprise to see very little movement in the goalkeeper rankings. Joe Hart was the only beneficiary of a shutout in gameweek 36 and that helps him maintain the top spot. Ben Foster’s heroics at Newcastle earned him yet more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Save Points and he should be guaranteed at least further gains in that area from his remaining fixtures.

Liverpool’s Jose Reina, Chelsea’s Petr Cech and United’s Edwin van der Sar are all expensive propositions but look secure and are perhaps the best remaining candidates for at least one clean sheet. Lower down, both West Ham’s Robert Green and Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey offer budget options that could surprise.

There will be a good few Fantasy Managers left patching their defence with injury doubts surrounding Robert Huth and uncertainty over David Luiz’s start for Chelsea. At this stage it’s clear that, when shopping for defenders, attacking returns are king. Everton’s Leighton Baines may not have favourable fixtures but there’s you can’t question his assist potential; he also remains on spot-kicks according to the noises emanating from Goodison following Mikel Arteta’s miss at Wigan. Bolton’s Gary Cahill – again with little clean sheet potential – hovers at our number two spot solely down to his threat at set-plays and propensity to earn FPL Bonus.

Below that pair, we have two players who should at least guarantee two starts over the final fixtures, with Chelsea’s Ashley Cole and Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel set to avoid any rest and rotation – Skrtel’s team-mate John Flanagan also looks likely to retain his starting role and remains a budget prospect. City’s Joleon Lescott follows next, although he could be subject to rest following Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Wolves’s Jody Craddock is a notable option – back in the fold at Wolves, he should be in line for two consecutive starts and offer some potential for a budget outlay. United’s Nemanja Vidic could be a trump card, but even the United skipper is not assured of two starts if he goes to Ewood and helps claim the point that would allow Alex Ferguson to rest players ahead of the Champions League final.

Moving into midfield and Frank Lampard holds top spot by virtue of strong form and the likelihood that he should avoid any tinkering from Carlo Ancelotti. Team-mate Florent Malouda is less secure and that doubt is enough to see him outside our top five that includes relegation battles Charles N’Zogbia and Thomas Hitzlsperger. That pair will face off at the weekend and both look well placed for further returns before the season is out.

Blackpool’s Charlie Adam is another player motivated by his sides’ need to cling to their Premier League place and that’s enough to see the Seasider stand above the City pairing of David Silva and Yaya Toure; they will both be exposed to the threat of rotation following Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Liverpool’s Maxi Rodriguez has been a vastly popular signing following Monday’s hat-trick at the Cottage but team-mate Dirk Kuyt is better placed. The Dutchman stays in our top five, pipping compatriot Rafael Van der Vaart. Kuyt looks guaranteed of two starts and will remain on spot-kicks – a role that has proved so profitable in recent weeks.

West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie holds firm as our striker of choice with form and fixtures to end the season on a high. Indeed, the top four remain unchanged here with Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez maintaining devastating form to make our selection task an easy one.

Wolves’s Steven Fletcher is the most notable name in the top echelons and certainly a consideration. With the motivation of top-flight survival and form showing four goals in as many gameweeks, the former Burnley hitman looks an assured budget option for those needing to free up funds and searching for a likely differential.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Young or Silva or VDV out for N'Zog ?

Is it worth -4 for Welbeck to Odem or Fletcher ?

    Morning all.

    51 points clear in mini-league.

Rival has taken an 8 point hit in a bid to catch me. I reckon he's brought in Suarez, Maxi and Nzogbia based on his team value.

    My team is

    Foster
    Carr, Smalling, Luiz, Huth, Djourou
    Adam, Lamps, VDV, Yaya, Young
    Bent, RVP, Zamora

Im thinking of doing Yaya & Bent > Nzogbia & Suarez

    and playing the following team

    Foster
Huth, Smalling, Djourou (assuming Luiz is left out, Carr)
    Adam, Lamps(c), Nzogbia, VDV (Young)
    RVP, Suarez (Zamora)

    look good? subs ok?

Unsure who to bin out of Silva, Young and VdV? Mind you binning two of them for N'Zogbia and the Hitz may not be the worst transfers. Silva in my mind wont play against stoke. Young has tough fixtures and VdV...well less siad on him the better.

Tevez gives Mancini the option to play Balotelli in a wide role, so I would say Silva. Generally he's more at threat because Mancini has Johnson and Wright-Phillips who can also take up wide roles. With Tevez in the side you can also argue that Silva doesn't see as much of the ball or have quite so much influence.

i think u can take it back to him refusing to play for northern ireland because his family was threatened. He is a catholic from Lurgan in Northern Ireland where there is a lot of secterian trouble. He was celtic captain and is now manager. He is also a passionate celtic supporter and can come across as spikey. there are lots of spikey, passionate men in football but none have recieved death threats or bombs in the post. i think we need to stop looking at Lennon and looking at at the narrow minded thugs who do these things.

I agree, there is no place for it in the game, these thugs should be locked up no questions. but these thugs have always been around and done nothing the rivalary has always been there and nothing has happened lennon must be held partly accountable for these thing. I am not condoning anything likethis at all but he does not do himself any favours.

I think you will see a more reserved lennon if he gets the job. Do you seriously think hes a good manager? He imploded in europe, he has signed 3 quality players in the summer when rangers lost the majority of there stars. come january we then lost the SPLs top scorer. On paper the celtic squad/1st team should have this title wrapped weeks ago. but lennon hasnt had the mentality to do this. A credit is due to walter smith, but Lennon has bottled it and made poor manigerial decisions.

Nolan was a last-minute punt for a 4pt hit last week because I had a feeling he could run riot against Birmingham at home. Obviously that didn't work and now I'm benching him away to Chelsea in the hope he can come good on the last day of the season at home to West Brom. It would be too painful to sell him now after getting him in for a hit, I reckon.

I'm not really feeling the NZog love. He could get a good return this weekend but I don't fancy Wigan away to Stoke on the last day.

Anyone else feels like their team i limping towards the finish line? Pretty much all my mini leagues won...overall rank not improving much and a team that could do with a wildcard due to fixtures, rest and rotation

i wish that was the case! count yourself lucky.
I've got a VERY slim lead in my cash mini league...and he's got a better team currently...would be happy if last 2 fixtures got called off and the season finished this afternoon....

I've still got a minileague to hold the lead to and need to beat fratboy in his 4 the run in league, so i'm still ok with it. have you got that much of a lead to take a huge hit and try to get the best GW score?

Personally, penalties are a bonus and shouldn't be taken into account unless you know who is refereeing the 2 games.

A good point, but suarez is a penalty magnet and Kuyt hasn't missed one.....yet.

I know but what are the chances of any team getting a penalty in a game.

I'd take them into account if I was 50/50 between 2 players and one of them happened to take penalties. It could be a decider, but more often than not, whether they take penalties shouldn't really come into it.

I completely agree! When was the last time anyone thought of buying Rooney because he's on penalties?

However Lampard, Kuyt, Adam, Baines and Tevez just seem to be gifted them this season. The only person I wouldn't have now who's on penalties is VDV.

It shouldn't come into it, but in this game I'd say its a key factor!

I think you've always got to take penalties into account when looking at bringing players in, eg Kuyt V Suarez. Don't get my wrong Suarez is awesome however since Christmas I've changed tactics and only really brought in players who take set pieces and or penalties (I'm currently sitting on 8 penalty takers alone) and have seen my overall position rocket because of this.

Morning all, I could really do with some help with my team, I’m struggling to maintain a 20 point lead. Is it worth taking an 8 point hit to do the following:-

Huth, Silva & VDV > Flanagan, Lampard, N’Zogbia

        My Team
        Foster, Begovic,
Kelly, R Johnson, Luiz, Huth, Dawson
        Yaya, Silva, Adam, VDV, O’Hara,
        Rooney, Drogba, RVP

        His Team
        Foster, Jaaskelainen,
        Bardsley, Dawson, Luiz, Kolorov, Coleman
        Nani, Yaya, Adam, Dempsey, Ferguson,
        Odemwingie, Drogba, RVP

        Any thoughts?

Going into this weekend I'm looking to start with the following front 7:

VDV, Kuyt, Lampard, Adam (Young - sub)
        V' Persie, Odemwingie, Sturridge

I'm sorely tempted to bring in N'Zogbia, though...

        a) Is it that necessary given this line-up
        b) Obviously I would sell Young, though if I was to start with N'Zogbia, who would I drop to the bench?

        kuyt vdv silva lampard toure
        rvp rooney sturridge
