Charles N’Zogbia’s second-half double caps off a marvellous Wigan comeback that condemns West Ham to the Championship and sets up an incredible final day of the season next Sunday, where five teams will fight it out to avoid the dreaded drop.

Chelsea draw at home to Newcastle but still clinch second place thanks to Arsenal’s dreadful 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa -a result which now leaves the door open for Man City to nip in and steal third. Meanwhile the battle for fifth spot takes a twist as Spurs turn Liverpool over in their own backyard. Here’s the notes on yesterday’s tale of the unexpected…

Hammers Drop
At half-time, it was looking good for West Ham; two nil up at Wigan (with Demba Ba scoring twice) and with Birmingham trailing Fulham at home, Avram Grant’s side were in with a shout of beating the drop. Forty-five minutes later, it was all over as a Charles N’Zogbia-inspired Latics won a five goal thriller right at the death. A few minutes later it was all over for Grant, reportedly sacked in the tunnel in light of the club’s poor campaign.

Championship football now beckons but West Ham will want to at least leave with a home victory, and face Sunderland at Upton Park next Sunday in their final Premier League match for at least a season. With the likes of Ba, Scott Parker and Thomas Hitzlsperger all worthy of a place in top-flight football, the Hammers will face a fight to hang on to their leading lights over the summer.

Charles N’Zogbia
It’s five goals in his last five now for the Frenchman as a double ensured Wigan’s survival bid goes right to the wire. N’Zogbia picked up the 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for a 14 point return and has scored 47 FPL points in those last 5 games. With Wigan needing a draw or more at Stoke next weekend -depending on other results- who would bet against him doing the same again?

Big Eck’s Blues
Birmingham only have themselves to blame for their current predicament; just a single point from their last five games sees the Carling Cup winners staring relegation in the face. They travel to Spurs next week, and with Harry Redknapp’s side needing a win to clinch the Europa League spot, the signs don’t look promising; Birmingham have just two wins (and less than a goal per game) on the road all season, and will be hoping Cameron Jerome recovers from a heel injury in time for the big showdown. Good news for McLeish is top scorer Craig Gardner and Liam Ridgewell will both return from suspension.

Brede Hangeland
Two goals and a clean sheet at St Andrews saw the Fulham centre-half score 21 FPL points this weekend and climb to second in the Defender rankings, behind only Leighton Baines. A look at “Value” for Defenders sees Hangeland and Fulham colleague Aaron Hughes at number one and two for the season, with Mark Hughes’ side chalking up 14 clean sheet so far. Hangeland’s 6 goal-haul makes him the Cottagers’ second-top scorer, with Clint Dempsey topping the charts on 12.

Chelsea Line Up Now a Lottery
Florent Malouda out. Didier Drogba out. Carlo Ancelotti kept the 4-3-3 but dropped his two top scorers for Chelsea’s final home game of the season, with Fernando Torres flanked by Nicolas Anelka and Youssi Benayoun. In a flat performance, undoubtedly affected by Man United’s title triumph the previous day, the home side were distinctly average and Newcastle looked a threat time and again on the counter, despite David Luiz dropping out for the more assured Alex at the heart of the Chelsea defence.

With Arsenal’s home loss wrapping up second place for Ancelotti’s side, it’s impossible to guess the starting XI for next Sunday’s trip to Everton and Fantasy investment in Chelsea players right now seems an unwise move.

Carroll’s Comeback Sees Liverpool Draw a Blank
In the week Kenny Dalglish celebrated his three-year contract as permanent manager, Liverpool chose to give their most inept display in months. Coming into the home game with Tottenham on the back of six wins and a draw in eight games, Liverpool were in sublime form but, ironically, the reintroduction of Andy Carroll up front saw them draw a blank.

With Raul Meireles still not recovered from the hamstring injury that forced him off at Fulham, Maxi Rodriguez kept his place on the wing, with Dirk Kuyt dropping back to midfield to accommodate Carroll. The side never captured the form that has seen 13 goals in the previous three games and now need results elsewhere to go their way next week to qualify for Europe, regardless of their own result at Aston Villa.

Rafael Van der Vaart
A thigh injury forced the Dutchman from the proceedings early in the second-half at Anfield and, much to the frustration of his Fantasy Owners, Spurs were then awarded a penalty, subsequently converted by Luka Modric in Van der Vaart‘s absence. Having given his side the lead, Van der Vaart could have been on to a big haul but instead had to settle for 6 pts. With a final day win against Birmingham ensuring Europa League qualification, his availability will be key going into next weekend.

Awesome Dawson
Michael Dawson was an immovable object in the Tottenham defence as they kept Carroll and company at bay at Anfield. The centre-back returned a clean sheet – his first in seven league starts and also fetched the maximum 3 FPL Bonus Points for only the second time this season. Dawson’s dominance in the Spurs back four is clearly evident in our Members OPTA data; had he been fit for the early part of the season, it seems likely that Tottenham would have fared better defensively this term and Dawson would be amongst the top FPL prospects.

Arsenal Loss Hands Advantage to City
The 1-0 home win over Man United a couple of weeks ago looked like just the result to reinvigorate Arsene Wenger’s side, but last week’s loss at Stoke was topped off by a miserable home performance against Aston Villa yesterday. Arsenal’s 2-1 loss now hands the impetus to Man City in the race for third place; that perhaps suggests Roberto Mancini will be more inclined to field a full-strength side for Tuesday’s match at home to Stoke, knowing two wins in their last couple of games would see them finish above the Gunners.

Wenger confirmed in his post-match comments that skipper Cesc Fabregas would not play again this season following his thigh injury, while both Johan Djourou and Samir Nasri are major doubts for next Sunday’s trip to Fulham.

Darren Bent
A win at the Emirates ended any questions over Villa’s survival bid and Bent was, once again, the man to find the net. He scored both goals and grabbed 3 Bonus Points for a 13 point FPL haul against a hopelessly out-of-sorts Arsenal. In fifteen games since his move from Sunderland, he has scored 10 of Villa’s 23 goals, showing just what a great piece of business his January acquisition was by Gerard Houllier.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I'm likely to be 85-90 points clear after this week has ended, unless Silva has a blinder in which case it will be more.

For some reason I still worry that taking a bit of a gamble could see me lose the league!

Hatred of man utd is ridiculous. Im a lower league follower (blyth spartans) but if i had to say a club i admired and respected above all others it would be man utd. A formidable boss, impressive history, never say die attitude, excellent players, arguably the most loveable player (chicharito or hernandez for those sensitive sorts(losers) who hate his nickname) a good british contingent. How can you cast bitterness and jealousy aside? Lol. Thats the primary reason for not liking Man United. Obviously.

For the vast majority of football fans, supporting their team is like an endless source of anguish (Im a gunner). Man United fans (and Barcelona fans, to a greater extent), dont share in that aspect at all; for them, football support is a constant source of winning and joy. It doesnt take a rocket-scientist to see why people dont like them (it clearly has nothing to do with how likeable the players are, or how talented they are).

Really? I'm not sure. Having your hopes repeatedly dashed might be as painful as never hoping too much to begin with.

In any case, what I'm saying is that fans of Man United and Barcelona (and Liverpool in their hayday) cant really relate to the rest of us, and we cant really relate to them, since our experiences of what it is to be a supporter are so different. This is just my opinion, mind. And its why I resent Man United 🙂

Jealousy is often categorised as a basic human emotion. Intelligent or no, we all feel it.

Also, if you are suggesting that Man United fans are a cut above the rest in terms of intellect, you'll forgive me if I don't take you too seriously. Fact of the matter is, football supporters are probably, on average, less smart than the population at large.

Nah sorry my intent was to say that an irrational hatred of man utd is stupid but to step back and realise that despite biases people may have or bitterness/jealousy they are a good team worthy of respect.

Just worded it in an antagonistic way for no reason, for which i apologise.

Haha its all good. Truthfully I have the utmost respect for them. They are the best team of my generation, and the number of titles, champions league finals, trophies they have won is staggering.

I'm just jealous, that's all. Beneath all that though I can see they are certainly worthy of respect...

The Blackburn one was just too easy, as Paul Robinson is a moron. Here is the incident you're talking about.

              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbAAx-EYfVI#t=39s

For the record I don't have any specific problem with divers as it's so common but not all players do it and not all viewers like it.

Does make me think slightly less if him i have to admit but his pros outweigh his cons. In the same way i admire messi and ronaldo despite their cheating. Im not comparing chicha to those two lol

not really. it's one rule which the whole world has managed to stick to since names on the back of the shirt came into use. imagine everyone did what hernandez did it would just look ridiculous when the team is lined up singing a national anthem and lined up you've got 'wazza' 'shagger' 'trigger' 'sparky' 'ginge' 'big pea' 'giggsy' 'JT'

barca play 80 minutes of boring football, and flares of excitement/ brilliance. They are cheating divers and thugs like dani alves and busquets have no place in a side which promotes itself as a fair brand and altruistic team with their admirable unicef support, it doesnt stand up to what the players are doing!

The barca of old, cruyff, ronaldinho etc,,..loved them

The current barca no thanks, like watching messi and iniesta sure, but after that...

Theyd still have iniesta of course and a whole host of other very talented players but i genuinely think hes responsible for 50% or more of their success. Without him i think theyd just be arsenal mk II.

Don't get it. Far more United fans live in Manchester / North West than in London / South East. If you're saying that United have a lot of fans away from Manchester, that's true - they have the biggest fanbase in the world - but they are dispersed across the globe, not particularly focused on London

People looking for a United player for next GW - I've seen Berbatov mentioned, Valencia, even Gibson and Anderson!

Am I missing something here, isn't Nani the obvious option?

With Valencia and Park set to be United's wide-men against Barca, Nani is almost certain to start and has been soring points all season when he's played

    - especially against poor teams
    - especially at Old Trafford

And, of course Blackpool, who concede for fun anyway, will have to go on the attack

    Thoughts?

      yeah, but will he play?

sure hes not needed for the CL starting team, but he doesnt need minutes and he doesnt really need confidence

picking fergies team is very difficult as he could , like he said , play himself, it matters so little!

United have so many wingers that we could see obertan on the wing or rafeal etc...

Nani is a good enuf shout ,but berba, looking to secure his top scorer award, is a better one

You just never know with Fergie - he's a tactical genius. I mean playing a midfield of Fabio - Gibson - O'Shea - Rafael and still managing to beat Arsenal comfortably show the sizeof his balls, as does the team he put out against Shalke in the Champions League Semi final!

well nani will probably start, its true, but inexplicably his form has dropped lately, and he's playing less collective football which cost united and cost him his place in the starting 11

united CL formation will be strictly of high workrate players to chase the barca players all over the field, it will be the same as schalke 1st leg

No way Nani will play; he is the perfect impact sub that Man U will need (when they are down 1/2-0...). SAF knows very well that a CL final can be won by top impact subs, and Nani has a huge role to play in this final.

There's been no speculation from Germany concerning Hitzlsperger as yet, media reports there today merely suggest that West Ham want to keep him. He'd have no problems finding a Bundesliga club if he wanted to return. Hitzlsperger was linked with Wolfsburg in 2010, and I imagine that Hoffenheim would be a good match too.

i don't think he'll go to spurs, they aren't the champions league side anymore and at his age i'm sure regular football is a priority, imo he's inferior to both sandro and huddlestone, and it's not eevn worth debating whether he's as good as modric

As an Everton fan, I can confidently say Baines is never in a gazillion years going to Arsenal, because there is literally no way in hell Arsene will pay the price.

Only club with the money to prize Baines away from Moyes' iron grip is City. Baines is on a long contract and Moyes will not sell for less than £20m, just like Joleon.

Baines would have been worth £8m in the market 5 years ago. Now hes nearly triple. But that doesn't mean he's triple as good. The lad looks like a great player at Everton, but if Arsenal want to win titles, they wont with Baines at left back.

He's not really Arsenal's type of player. Likes to whip balls in early, and isn't really the nippy, one-two playing full-back that would suit.

He'd be a better signing for United or Liverpool.

Cahill? criminal. Why would we want to pay £20mil for a defender in a side who can't keep clean-sheets?

We could do with a big powerful centre half, but surely we can do better than him. Lucio would be the pipe dream.

        Agree with AB regarding Parker.

Carrick has been the most important player the last few months.

Without him there would be no deep lying passer as Scholes is getting on and form is gone

And no defensive protective as Fletcher got injured and lost form.

Carrick has been excellent since turn of year. Back to 2007 -08 levels.

Still rather have Fletcher and Modric in the centre 🙂

Even better is we just pay cash for Modric. Don't particularly want to get rid of berbatov, but I guess he's not going to be happy being second choice.

                    So you eat eggs yes?

Easiest way to remain eating healthy would appear to be cutting back on carbohydrates.

In short the reduction will help regulate your appetite and make it possible to eat less and feel full.
So cut out processed carbs and foods in general . Increase and eat protein with every meal - this will allow greater fullness.

If you want to lose weight through exercise then higher intensity shorter duration is best. So fast paced run, interval training, weight lifting also.

Its nice to be able to fall back on that argument yes.

But a major cup semi final, against our fiercest enemies, and a chance to really put them in their place. And the guy didn't even turn up, no passion. But hey, what does he know, he's a cockney, means nothing to him. Collect his cool £160,000 a week or whatever he's on and live to play another day.

We;ll have to deal with Citeh fans on a daily basis, who will never ever let us forget that we helped them on their way to a first trophy in 35 years.

              Anyway, rant over. Carrick: me-no-likey.

Cue complete reversal of opinion if he scores Champs League winner.

              Football fans: Fickle.

I never get tired of this argument. Nor does it fall to make me laugh. PASSSION!...is the most overused necessity in football.
He made a mistake in a semi final. It happens and on the scheme of things it was only the 3rd biggest trophy.

He also more than made up for it elsewhere.

He was spraying balls all over the field, unfortunately, they just weren't to anyone wearing red.

No doubt the guy was class when we bought him, but he never recovered from the mauling at the hands of Barca.

Call it passion or whatever you want, but he had no impetus in that game and honestly looked like he wasn't interested. A la Veron a few years ago. Fans pick up on that. Some players can get away with it, strolling around the park and then bursting to life when needed. Ronaldo, Cantona. But Carrick was a massive, massive disapointment in that game.

To be fair to him, he has been good since. Fwiw I think he'll start against Barca. Lets just hope he plays like we know he can.

He's picked up the last few games though, and was immense against Chelsea. If he kicks on from here, it'll be like having a new player.

Fergies give him a new contract, that's good enough for me. He knows a damn sight more than I do about him. (like where he's from, for a start)

He's that player that all the other teams consider their worst player so when he has the ball for what's supposed to be an average of 2.2 seconds no one EVER apparently wants to close him down. So in reality it actually ends up being 3-4 seconds and he can pick out Valebcia if defenses squeeze narrow and post up Rooney when defenses fight width.

    Lads opinions appreciated,

I am top of my mini league by 47 points. My closest rival has silva and tevez to go. I have no- one else. Would u say I am safe or squeaky bum time? Winner gets 250 quid. I must win!!!!!!!!

i wouldn't say you are safe yet. should your lead still be 40+ after the man city game i reckon you're home and dry, any less and who knows, your captain could pull a hamstring on 5 mins, while his scores a hattrick on the final day

U should be ok, but nothing is every certain, 3 years ago my mate was leading me by about 30 points I think until in the last / second last game of the season I put in Downing for this game:

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7381794.stm

He got a ridiculous score of about 15 that week as no got any more than 3 points for him. In the end I won our mini league, epic but true story!

Getting Walker out of my bench would really help me now...

Quick Quiz (to show how easy this game is): There is an FPL league for managers who have finished in the top 1,000 in the world in ANY prior season. There are 37 managers in the league. Guess how many of the 37 managers currently rank in the top 1,000 THIS season?

        Actually only ONE.

Congrats to Paul Brett (Team ★★K.F.C.★★™©) who is currently ranked 968. Everyone else is 1,738 or below. Bottom team is 536,906. Only the top 14 teams are in the top 10,000. Shows how difficult it is to be consistently right at the top. Quite a few current or former FFS regulars in the list...

My 19,967th position is vastly superior.

My rank got worse when I won my mini league. Had a few red arrows and thought what the hell, I'll just take loads of hits.

That's my excuse anyway, it was falling either way!

    Afternoon all,

Looking for some help. i have a 44 point gap to make up in my mini and I am not sure what to do.
    My current team is below.

    Hart (Robinson)
    Coleman, Johnson R, Evatt (Ivanovic,Dawson)
    Adam, Maxi, Cleverley, N'Zogbia(C) (Malouda)
    Campbell, Rodallega, Hernandez

I have 21.1 million that I can spend and i dont mind maken a pile of changes provided I am sure they will bring me in what i need.

    All ideas are welcome.

I don't think you will be able to overcome 44 points in a single gameweek, especially given the fact you want to make more changes to your team, which means you will take hits, putting you further behind.

Here's another one with a top1k finish on course for another one. Well done!

Don't relate at all to what you say though, I've never really thought like that in this game. I'm normally not a great loser but in this game you can't affect ANYTHING else than your own position so it's not logical to me to feel inferior or worry about those doing better.
