Charles N’Zogbia’s second-half double caps off a marvellous Wigan comeback that condemns West Ham to the Championship and sets up an incredible final day of the season next Sunday, where five teams will fight it out to avoid the dreaded drop.

Chelsea draw at home to Newcastle but still clinch second place thanks to Arsenal’s dreadful 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa -a result which now leaves the door open for Man City to nip in and steal third. Meanwhile the battle for fifth spot takes a twist as Spurs turn Liverpool over in their own backyard. Here’s the notes on yesterday’s tale of the unexpected…

Hammers Drop
At half-time, it was looking good for West Ham; two nil up at Wigan (with Demba Ba scoring twice) and with Birmingham trailing Fulham at home, Avram Grant’s side were in with a shout of beating the drop. Forty-five minutes later, it was all over as a Charles N’Zogbia-inspired Latics won a five goal thriller right at the death. A few minutes later it was all over for Grant, reportedly sacked in the tunnel in light of the club’s poor campaign.

Championship football now beckons but West Ham will want to at least leave with a home victory, and face Sunderland at Upton Park next Sunday in their final Premier League match for at least a season. With the likes of Ba, Scott Parker and Thomas Hitzlsperger all worthy of a place in top-flight football, the Hammers will face a fight to hang on to their leading lights over the summer.

Charles N’Zogbia
It’s five goals in his last five now for the Frenchman as a double ensured Wigan’s survival bid goes right to the wire. N’Zogbia picked up the 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for a 14 point return and has scored 47 FPL points in those last 5 games. With Wigan needing a draw or more at Stoke next weekend -depending on other results- who would bet against him doing the same again?

Big Eck’s Blues
Birmingham only have themselves to blame for their current predicament; just a single point from their last five games sees the Carling Cup winners staring relegation in the face. They travel to Spurs next week, and with Harry Redknapp’s side needing a win to clinch the Europa League spot, the signs don’t look promising; Birmingham have just two wins (and less than a goal per game) on the road all season, and will be hoping Cameron Jerome recovers from a heel injury in time for the big showdown. Good news for McLeish is top scorer Craig Gardner and Liam Ridgewell will both return from suspension.

Brede Hangeland
Two goals and a clean sheet at St Andrews saw the Fulham centre-half score 21 FPL points this weekend and climb to second in the Defender rankings, behind only Leighton Baines. A look at “Value” for Defenders sees Hangeland and Fulham colleague Aaron Hughes at number one and two for the season, with Mark Hughes’ side chalking up 14 clean sheet so far. Hangeland’s 6 goal-haul makes him the Cottagers’ second-top scorer, with Clint Dempsey topping the charts on 12.

Chelsea Line Up Now a Lottery
Florent Malouda out. Didier Drogba out. Carlo Ancelotti kept the 4-3-3 but dropped his two top scorers for Chelsea’s final home game of the season, with Fernando Torres flanked by Nicolas Anelka and Youssi Benayoun. In a flat performance, undoubtedly affected by Man United’s title triumph the previous day, the home side were distinctly average and Newcastle looked a threat time and again on the counter, despite David Luiz dropping out for the more assured Alex at the heart of the Chelsea defence.

With Arsenal’s home loss wrapping up second place for Ancelotti’s side, it’s impossible to guess the starting XI for next Sunday’s trip to Everton and Fantasy investment in Chelsea players right now seems an unwise move.

Carroll’s Comeback Sees Liverpool Draw a Blank
In the week Kenny Dalglish celebrated his three-year contract as permanent manager, Liverpool chose to give their most inept display in months. Coming into the home game with Tottenham on the back of six wins and a draw in eight games, Liverpool were in sublime form but, ironically, the reintroduction of Andy Carroll up front saw them draw a blank.

With Raul Meireles still not recovered from the hamstring injury that forced him off at Fulham, Maxi Rodriguez kept his place on the wing, with Dirk Kuyt dropping back to midfield to accommodate Carroll. The side never captured the form that has seen 13 goals in the previous three games and now need results elsewhere to go their way next week to qualify for Europe, regardless of their own result at Aston Villa.

Rafael Van der Vaart
A thigh injury forced the Dutchman from the proceedings early in the second-half at Anfield and, much to the frustration of his Fantasy Owners, Spurs were then awarded a penalty, subsequently converted by Luka Modric in Van der Vaart‘s absence. Having given his side the lead, Van der Vaart could have been on to a big haul but instead had to settle for 6 pts. With a final day win against Birmingham ensuring Europa League qualification, his availability will be key going into next weekend.

Awesome Dawson
Michael Dawson was an immovable object in the Tottenham defence as they kept Carroll and company at bay at Anfield. The centre-back returned a clean sheet – his first in seven league starts and also fetched the maximum 3 FPL Bonus Points for only the second time this season. Dawson’s dominance in the Spurs back four is clearly evident in our Members OPTA data; had he been fit for the early part of the season, it seems likely that Tottenham would have fared better defensively this term and Dawson would be amongst the top FPL prospects.

Arsenal Loss Hands Advantage to City
The 1-0 home win over Man United a couple of weeks ago looked like just the result to reinvigorate Arsene Wenger’s side, but last week’s loss at Stoke was topped off by a miserable home performance against Aston Villa yesterday. Arsenal’s 2-1 loss now hands the impetus to Man City in the race for third place; that perhaps suggests Roberto Mancini will be more inclined to field a full-strength side for Tuesday’s match at home to Stoke, knowing two wins in their last couple of games would see them finish above the Gunners.

Wenger confirmed in his post-match comments that skipper Cesc Fabregas would not play again this season following his thigh injury, while both Johan Djourou and Samir Nasri are major doubts for next Sunday’s trip to Fulham.

Darren Bent
A win at the Emirates ended any questions over Villa’s survival bid and Bent was, once again, the man to find the net. He scored both goals and grabbed 3 Bonus Points for a 13 point FPL haul against a hopelessly out-of-sorts Arsenal. In fifteen games since his move from Sunderland, he has scored 10 of Villa’s 23 goals, showing just what a great piece of business his January acquisition was by Gerard Houllier.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just a mini achievement of mine, took control of my sisters team after she got bored almost immediately!

So close to 26 green arrows in a row, just a couple thousand difference to create 2 red arrows! And also 17th in the world of people who started in GW10 🙂

Me and my rival both have Dawson sitting with 9 points on our bench.

I'm hoping Huth doesn't play, he'll be hoping Kolarov doesn't play.

I think that is a pretty common scenario.

I'm getting Dawson no matter what as Luiz and Djourou didn't turn out, my rival needs Huth not to play to get Dawson.

Honigstein is a good commentator on the German game, but he's no expert on English football (despite his recent book on it), and doesn't usually have connections to EPL players. He's clearly got a source here.

Arsenal will almost certainly win the league at least once in the next 10 years. If they don't, then that's unlucky but they will absolutely 100% be in with a shout most years.

So no, as much as I'd like to see Arsenal win the league, I can't feel any sympathy for their fans. Basically, one team wins the league, five teams might, the rest never will. If you're a fan of one of that group then you've no right to moan about being hard done by! Do you know what, the rest of us have our hopes dashed every season too...

All that is relative though. If I was a Blackpool fan, I'd be delighted by finishing 17th, as an Arsenal fan, I'd be disgusted with that finish.

I think your argument only really applies if you're a fan who supports a big team because they're a big team.

Obviously supporting a team in the Champions League, etc has its perks, but underachievement is painful regardless of where your team is.

Awful, awful chat from Mick McCarthy's Baby in that link btw.

My point really is that an Arsenal fan saying a Man U fan couldn't relate to how they feel is absolute rubbish. I also don't think Arsenal have underachieved this season, or in any of the last few. They just haven't won a trophy, that's all. If anyone thinks finishing in the top 3 every year for a decade (or whatever Arsenal's record is) is underachieving then they could do with a reality check.

Are Arsenal going to finish in the top 3 this season though?

I believe Arsenal have the best squad in the league, with the best player in the league, and the best striker in the league, so finishing 4th is very much a relative underachievement.

I think so. Arsenal's system just doesn't get the best out of the fringe players the way United's does. Man for man, I think Arsenal's edges it.

It's certainly not the fourth squad in the league.

A friend supports Blackburn because each year if they stay up he feels its a victory. He said supporting Arsenal is harder cos you expect them to win, but they dont.

i can see both sides of the argument. it's easier to take no trophies when you have no expectations. getting close-ish every year would be more frustrating. although yes you can argue supporting a team who never gets close to anything is much more frustrating.
being an arsenal fan must be like getting a date with megan fox but blowing it on the date. meanwhile your man utd supporting mate also gets a date with her and doesn't blow it... she does 😉

Its got everything to do with how reality meets expectations. Apologies for use of the word HOPE, that doesnt get to what I mean.

As people below have said, people who support Stoke or Birmingham this season have had their expectations exceeded - FA Cup final, Carling Cup victory.

2 months ago Arsenal were looking odds on to win a trophy, being in 4 competitions. Now we have nothing. That feels like being given a present only to have it snatched away

Brilliant seasons for Stoke/Birmingham, but that's singling out the good ones. Honestly, most fans end up disappointed each year. Sheffield Utd were one of the favourites for promotion and they've just been relegated. Whereas that's just not going to happen to Arsenal, you know that they will be top 4 again next season and could well win the league. You'd be gutted again if they don't, of course, but that's not my point- my point is that to other fans, an Arsenal fan saying 'oh Man U, they always win' doesn't win sympathy because for my football-watching lifetime Arsenal have been a successful trophy-winning club and a few barren years doesn't change that because despite that they're still one of the very few top teams and have never dropped out of that group.

I assume people aren't really getting where I'm coming from...

I get it completely although I'm only 'disappointed' if we underperform and would only be 'gutted' by relegation. Of course we'd love to win something but I believe that, contrary to the cliche that it's 'all about trophies', being there and being part of are the most important things.

              Could be wrong though.

Berbatov has just had his goal against Sunderland (26 Dec) taken away, and awarded as an Anton Ferdinand.

    He's now on 20, Tevez - 19, Bent and RVP - 17.

I know he's scored a lot recently, but RVP *could* have scored so many more if things had gone a little differently. Backed him as top scorer at 40/1 about a month or two ago. Could have been inspired!

Diaby is so sluggish, there's absolutely no urgency about his play. It's the most frustrating thing in the world when your team needs a goal.

It's nice to see Gibbs getting a run of games at last. Didn't think he had a bad game yesterday, despite being abandoned by Arshavin for most of the game.

1 good match in 20 doesn't really cut it when your going for the big accolades.

Horrible ain't it? He's also become so predictable so all the defenders know how to take the ball from him and his major problem is that he does not hustle for the ball and when he finally does it usually a foul

With Arsenals current performance 6% price hike is a joke

he gives the ball away so much.

vs. united we had about 60/65% possession in the first half, then Nasri came off and Arshavin came on, and it was 30% in the second half.

he refuses to play an easy ball, even in his own third.

I actually think we needed Diaby yesterday. With both Ramsey and Wilshere together in the midfield, they are now being ruthlessly exposed as talented individuals but massively overrated. Schillacci is absolutely useless and once again I cannot understand your support for Gibbs who is not the answer; the answer is Clichy. If there is a problem at full-back, it is actually over the other side and Sagna's has been very poor this season. Arshavin, yes, I cannot believe how much he has deteriorated, but then the whole team is in freefall at the moment. Bendtner and Chamakh have no impact on the game anymore and that's without the likes of Denilson and Rosicky who are simply not good enough for Arsenal Football Club. I think more and more people are starting to question Wenger and that is the root of the problem.

He needs to move on and quickly. We were only ever that close to the top in the past two seasons, because of the points dropped by Man Utd and Chelsea. Chelsea under Mourinho (from 5/6 years ago) would be 25pts clear of us.

        This cannot continue.

I'm biased, but I genuinely thought that Arsenal looked much more threatening when Bendtner came on yesterday. Although I'll never understand why Wenger always plays him in a wide role.

I think Sagna's been fine. He's easily the most competent right back in the league. His crossing is poor, but he doesn't exactly have many big targets to aim for. Clichy's inability to hold the defensively line is a farce. He's almost become a parody of himself the way hi drops so far behind everyone else.

I thought Chamakh was good yesterday, scored a perfectly good goal, and linked up well with Walcott and RVP.

I think Wenger is running out of time. He just needs to buy leaders/winners. There's nothing else really wrong with the side. Players like Ramsey, Wilshere and Djourou are talented, but can't hold form for a whole season, and when the side is wobbling, they're going to struggle (like now).

Trouble is buying leaders/winners has been needed for many seasons now and he just does not address it to the point that he seems to ignore it. Fabregas is not a captain and should never be, but it's a case of give the armband to the best player as he did with Henry too.

Adams and Vieira were leaders/winners and worthy of wearing the captains armband. I think from memory you are not keen on him, but I'd get Gary Cahill and make him captain (even Samba). We don't need accomplished defenders who can bring the ball out. We just need defenders who can defend. This is why Vidic is so important for Man Utd.

As for RVP being the best striker in the Premiership, surely Tevez and Rooney are better and they also offer that added grit and determination that we are obviously lacking.

RVP is actually a conundrum for us in that you know he will play half a season. By playing a 4-3-3, this means we neither sign a world class striker as we are faced with a problem of how to play them both (Drogba/Torres), but then for the half of the season where RVP is injured, we don't have anyone good enough to fill in (and I mean really good enough).

That last paragraph is absolutely spot-on. It's one of SAF's least appreciated but most important skills - managing to keep players happy even though they don't play every week.

We've usually had 4 top notch strikers since the Cole / Yorke / Sheringham / Solksjaer days, with hardly any complaints or players leaving because they're not first choice.

Arsenal currently have 1 top-notch striker...

Gary Cahill is awful. He has a terrible record of clean sheets at Bolton, isn't their captain, and hasn't ever won anything.

So essentially doesn't comply with any of the categories on the person spec.

Surely RvP is one of the few players who does offer some kind of grit and determination? he's been carrying the team for two months at least now. All Rooney and Tevez have over him is that they run around more.

I would address the fact you have Zigic first also VDV could be out so possibly a better transfer for Nzog.

Kuyt is on penaltys, fit to play and against Villa who despite yesterday have a rubbish defensive record.

      Not really a bandwagon.

We know he'll start, he's at home to a truly shite defense, and he is capable of explosive scoring. I think it's more a collection of people making an educated punt 🙂

My favourite Blue Teets post was when he replied to someone asking a mensa question having googled the answer to make himself look smart (it was easy to find where he'd got it from as he'd copied all of the working out). Unfortunately, he'd misread the question and googled the wrong thing. When I asked him about it, he said the original question was too easy so he'd added a bit to make it more difficult!

I normally lean to the opinion that this is more skill than luck, but I had to admit to myself yesterday that the Dempsey double week points were a touch lucky as he's done nothing since. But not quite as lucky as the outrageous Berbatov points this season.

Yup, luck's unquestionably more important, all you can do is shift the odds in your favour. You have absolutely no control over anything that happens, even if your players actually play at all, so luck has to be the major factor.

I was just thinking... 26 points ahead... I could make up to 7 transfers to copy my rival. That would leave it all down to captaincy. A final flip of the coin.

Do not do that many transfers- bad idea- keep points on the board and take a hit to field 11 with that kind of lead- your worst outcome is if several of your players (true of all of us, including your rival) do NOT play.

One of my main FFScout gripes.

Poster X "Anyone care to have a look at my team and advise on a transfer?"

Poster Y "Transfer out player x for player y I reckon"

Poster X "Your wrong for this, this and this reason"

    Moronic.

      Agreed.

get ready for loads of them in a few months with the tidal wave of RMTs.

Aye. And all of them will have next season's equivalent of Boselli and Petrov.

Whatever about the generic wildcard team (understandable), when I see a pre-season team full of bandwagons I cringe a little.

Dislike this. There was definitely some logic to getting Boselli and Petrov in, it wasn't just the sheep who had them.

And yes, I did have both of them!

Wasn't criticising, just saying. Think I had Petrov for the first week.

I reckon every man and his cat will have Taarabt, Odemwingie, Hernandez and Baines early doors.

Taraabt is annoying me already and this season hasn't even finished

        I'm truly f*cked.

I'm back from holidays Friday 12th August and I'll no doubt be in a little panic, but my posts will be no doubt be smothered by endless RMT's from newbie's to the site.

I wish there was a way we got preference during heavy traffic.

It's not just newbies that do RMT's is it?

I wouldn't say so, but the night before FPL begins there are a lot.

Ah, took me a while to figure out that the first and third posters were one and the same.

The thing that annoys me the most is when someone asks for advice, gets a few well thought out replies, and then the original poster doesn't reply to any of them, not even to thank the people who have tried to help.

And then posts the question again, as if no one even answered.

Is it just me looking at Hangelands points sitting on my bench, knowing they will be coming on at the close of the GW, worried that somehow the rules will change and it won’t happen!?! I haven't got a chance in Hell of getting them.

    Nah - me too.

I'd give anything for Odemwingies points. Well, not anything. A cake or something of similar value.

I've just realised I've made a slight miscalculation here. I brought in Rooney for Drogba this week, which is all well and good, but I also wanted to have a United striker for the last game against Blackpool.

Now it's beginning to dawn on me with the talk of the berba-wagon that he might be rested. Has there been talk of a predicted line-up?

Admittedly Rooney is no Van Persie, but there is a very real prospect of Berbatov going head to head with DJ campbell for the golden boot.
