We were all set to call this episode ‘Lolorov part 2 – to be continued next season’, but during the recording, something rather more fitting cropped up.

The final podcast of the season is with us to reveal that “deprivation” is the key word when it comes to Mark’s season finale. When Sunday rolls around and the hardcore (I include myself in this) are watching the season finale in glorious HD, Mark is set to be consigned to follow the action via a mobile phone. An old boy is 99 not out and our host is booked in to party along with the Werthers originals and rich tea biscuit dunking. Not the season climax our Mark had in mind.

Even so, Mark could still be smiling. It’s the last gameweek of the season and our rivalry comes down to a precarious 7-point gap in my favour. I’ve been ahead since gameweek 21, surely it would be ridiculous to lose it in this final week? I trust you’ll all be routing for #teamgranville come Sunday.

Listen in and sense my discomfort as we start the build up Sunday’s games, complete with the usual sprinkling of regulars and meaningless banter.

    hello everyone

i am clueless as to what to do with my teams this week. my gut says to leave it, but you never know. my team is:

    foster (mignolet)
    djourou, ivan, luiz (huth, coleman)
    adam, n'zog, kuyt, lamps, vdv
    rvp, suarez (odem)

because odem is questionable, i was thinking odem and ivan to tevez and flanagan (or any 4.5 def). and if i did get tevez, who do i bench from adam, znog, kuyt, lamps and vdv (although he's a doubt as well)?

    cheers

In case you didn't know... You NEED to have Berba in your team. Tevez got two at the Reebok last year also..

i think tevez is a better option than berba, especially since i think saf will rest a lot of players.

i have been thinking that as well, but suarez has been in fine form, and it wouldn't feel right to trade him. that could also be said about odem, but because he is questionable, i am more willing to transfer him out.

3 games on Fifa online tonight and my opponent has quit in every single one of them, the one just quit when I went 3-1 up in like the 60th minute, pretty pathetic.

I had one (before the PSN crash) going mental at me, he was 2-0 up, I pulled it back to 2-2 then with 10mins to go I scored a screamer from distance. He sent about 8 messages (he kept pausing it) calling me a jammy prick, pure flukey, lucky bastard etc etc so I scored another and he quit straight away.
      Lulz at him.

You really do get some dicks online. I was beating one the other day 7-1 and my connection cut out around 85 minutes so I lost 3-0. He then sent me messages like 'haha, your shit, easy win' and stuff like that, as if he actually won.

If it counted everytime you don't finish the match my DNF would probably be about 50%. I rarely go 3 games in a row without someone quitting on me, shocking.

It's really annoying. It's got to the stage when we're doing the Pro Clubs thing that we play shit for the first 5 mins. If they quit after 5min at least we get the 3-0 default win.

Depends, if you think Wolves will beat Blackburn convincingly then yes of course. I personally don't think they will so wouldn't go for him. All on preference, I'd rather have Sturridge of Bolton this week though, playing against his old team.

Cheers guys my team is this:

      Foster
      Vidic baines terry
      Lampard adam VDV nzogbia
      RVP(c) odemwingie sturridge

      Begovic yaya r.johnson walker

      2.5m exactly in the bank

Do you think any changes are needed? I cant afford to swap odem or sturridge out for berbatov without taking a point hit, and other than berbatov im not really that interested in anyone else. Should i just do nothing?

I am in the same boat with odem and sturridge. I think they both could do well. I need to take a hit to get berbs in for one of them, but my reasoning is that if I (c) berbs, and he does well, it's worth the 4 pts.

IF u don't want to take a hit to get berba?then one of these 3 strikers worth a punt this week:
ameobi-playing at home against brom and on pens and newcastle are very decent at home and there was a tweet that west brom may not play best 11....
ba -west ham playing for pride and he is in good form and could have scored atleast 3 against wigan last gw and sunderland season is already over imo and they have no form at all so he should do well...
owen-he will be playing possibly his last game for manutd and he will want to go out on a high(i.e.by scoring a goal atleast) and will play just behind berba so he is not a bad option against leaky b'pool defence...

yeah he will start for sure because as i said that could well be his last game in a manutd shirt and i don't think he will make the champs league subs bench either so he should start but i am not sure he can play full 90 mins these days but worth a punt if u are not interested in taking hit...

agree, or even dawson or a more expensive defender might still free up enough for berbs. if you get berbs, will you (c) him? RVP might not be a bad choice as well.

I don't think the real amounts are visible until after the deadline or everyone could tell a persons exact moves. thanks.

You can see the balance change after making transfers. as well as the number made. You just can't see what transfers were done.

Oracle, so we can see the delta in balances if we recorded it before the transfers were made and then deduce the amount spent on the unknown (unnamed) player(s)? So that makes it a cinch to find out pretty certainly who came in?

Already did my last free transfer, but worth taking any 4-point hits? Already won my mini-league (well, 180 point lead... good as), so just playing for honour/last chance saloon.

    Foster (Begovic)
    Smalling, Luiz, Kolarov (Walker, Coleman)
    Kuyt, N'Zogbia, Adam, VDV (Young)
    Odemwingie, Berbatov (C), VP

Also, not sure on Foster this week, but fancy Wigan to put a performance in.

    Appreciate any feedback!

I come on here in the morning (now) and then sometimes in the evening (HK time) and get 2 very different streams of usernames to chat with..

It's funny how different the 'consensus' is between the two timeframes.

You've got a group who insist you should take loads of hits, another group saying hits are a bad idea in the last gw.

You've got a group saying Nani out and a group saying Nani in.

Etc. etc. I think it shows that a herd mentality, even by people who take this game seriously, can be very luring, and not always lead to the most sensible decision..

I'm really going to think very hard before I take advice on here in the future!

Haha. I got nani last week when absolutely nobody was recommending it - now I'm thinking it might have been a mistake.

Also I'm very much in the 'no hits in the last week' group! Unless i hear news that a few of my players broke their legs, it'll be one transfer for me..

The problem with me is I'm generally a person who goes against the popular opinion, just for the sake of it - Wengeresque - So when good recommendations DO come around (i.e. Nzogbia last week) I'm a bit too quick to ignore them.. I thought - another injury doubt? No thanks!

That was my thinking when I bought him! Just getting a bit worried because Fergie is a surprise merchant!

The worry I have is that he's leading barcelona to assume Nani won't start, only to throw him in there. I think barcelona will be training & planning with valencia and park in their minds.

But even if this is the case, I guess he could start against Blackpool to maintain the deceit.

I also think 6 days is a longer gap than in previous seasons (when champs league was midweek) so it's not as certain as people make out that a complete reserve team will play.

I wouldn't be THAT surprised to see a strong team, minus giggs and 1 or 2 others.

maybe because of the difference in time zone 😉

u can do well with hits and without hits as well as theseteams shows:
      http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/eventhist.mc?id=448058
      http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/entryhist.mc?id=177744

if u think that a certain player will do well by taking a hit then u should do it specially in a dgw...
the people u are talking about(jafakate/lad 😉 and inalize) have only taken one or 2 hits all season so there planning from the start was not to take hits and they think of long term transfers etc and those who take hits basically play the game week by week...

Well I'm definitely not an anti - hits man.

In double gameweek period (and actually anytime you have 5-6 weeks to get your 4 points back) I'm all for hits.

Most of the season I think the misconception is that hits are bad... but in gw38 I think the misconception is that hits are still the same thing as earlier in the season.

They're a LOT LOT more difficult to justify with only 1 game to get your 4 points back.

          Example (forgetting dgws):

in gw33 you take a hit.

Your new player needs to do better than the player who wouldve started instead, by an avera of 4/6 = 0.66 points per game. Very much possible

In gw38 you take a hit

He needs to do better by FOUR points in 1 week. I.e an average of 4 points per gw.

0.66 points better per game - very very very possible
4 points better per game - requires a lot of luck

          Many people don't acknowledge this!

u are taking this game too seriusly man atm 😉 many have given up or are too far ahead/behind this season so they are taking hits for fun...then there are others who have 2 of odem/drog /roo/sturridge and with doubts on the first 3 and some of them are chasing a big lead and tevez and berba fighting for the golden boot and almost guranteed to start/pens and they are good differentials this week since many top teams will not have both of them without a hit and if they both score it will improve their rankings overall and in their mini-leagues no matter what...

It does seem like people make big mistakes mathematically/ logically speaking even when they're trying hard! the problem is these errors can pay off dramatically now and then so they gain approval.

I used to work in a betting shop and people would lose 20 quid a week for 10 weeks then win 100, and act like geniuses! We obviously bigged them up!

          You think that's bad...

My mate who has been talking himself up all season, fell 50 points behind and then last week he 'forgot' to touch his team - Same team, same captain, same subs order...

He told me AFTER the man city game that he 'forgot' and that he was really annoyed because he was going to sign Nzogbia and tevez, and captain nzogbia.

Talk about an elaborate excuse. Kills my gloating rights somewhat though!

Scored ......on hits...... my SWAG was a 15% chance of making a 4 pt hit payoff in one week. Probably closer to 12%. Just used what actually happened over a few game weeks. So of 20 possible defenders only three (who you don't already have) would pay off in one week with a score of 7 or more. Of Mids about the same, if you use 2 points as the base and perhaps 3 if you have any kind of bench strenght- Ferguson sometimes scores 3.

You have to subtract the real "out of the box" players who no one in their right mind would pick, but get a fluke high score. Emerton, etc.

Hits are fine over a few weeks to reshape your team, or if you can't field 11 (that too is probably over two weeks at least).

BTW jack I'm please someone else has the geek approach to this game.

              I have a spreadsheet... What a confession!

I have a defenders sheet... Where fixtures are rated according purely to opposing teams' goals scored over this season and last (higher weight to this season)... with a 1.5x increase for home teams (1.5 goals more scored at home on average)

An attacking sheet which is the same but for goals conceded

The key number in each sheet for each team is the total 'fixture score' for the next six games.

The interesting thing is it can be a great idea to buy an attacker for a team, at the same time as a bad time to buy a defender for the same team, and vice versa.

Also ranked players' value based on minutes played, points scored, and cost - But this doesn't acconut for good/ bad luck/ fixtures so probably the sample size is too small! Also this season where value is less important, due to expensive players doing badly, it's not that useful.

The only thing I heard him say is that he knows he has to play a strong team against blackpool out of respect to the other relegation battlers.

That's obviously why we're all thinking about the likes of owen, berbatov and gibson..

Do you think your spreadsheet has helped you quite a bit Scored?

One thing a lot of people talk about is having cheap keepers and defenders and rotating them. I think that strategy sounds good but is a load of bollocks. For example, Foster, if you rotated him early on depending on fixtures you would have missed out on a lot of points as he did so well vs the stronger teams.

sorry been away for half an hr...i think it's helped a bit for sure. I dno't believe in a fixed strategy for defenders/ attackers prices.

I think you have to think about individual players and their merits. This season a lot of defenders have done badly so it is a season where the 'cheap defenders' strategy gained popularity.

If we return to an era where chelsea and united etc keep clean sheets very often, and suppose someone like baines is in one of these teams and also getting attacking returns... How on earth can we rule players out because of our pricing strategy?

We can only make estmiates about how many points a player will get, whether he's a defender or an attacker, and decide from that how much we think he's worth paying for.

Whether my spreadsheet has worked can't be answered yet because i only made it a few weeks ago, but this season is my first and I'm doing pretty average - 10,000ish. Hoping for an improvement next season!

if u lose with that much lead than u should quit 😉
ur teams are quite similar and it could well come down to kuyt vs nani, dawson vs walker and who both of u decides to bench from ur front 8 and i think he will do roo to tevez/berba as well unless he take an 8 pt hit and manage to get both in... so best is to wait and see if he do his transfer before the deadline and then u can guess whether he got berba or tevez...

Well, if you're chasing a big lead I see nani as a possibility to score LOADS of points - clearly a big gamble though as he could equally do nothing.

If you're defending a lead, RVP is a safe bet especially if your opponent has him too. He seems to be about the steadiest performer, regardless of fixtures, by some way... And arsenal will play a full team, while fulham's priority is to avoid yellow cards!

Let me repeat something i wrote above when about 4 people are online (Now there are 2 people online instead)

If you take a hit with 6 gws remaining... your new player's returns need to exceed the player who would've otherwise started by:

    4/6 = 0.666 points per gw

If you take a hit now... he needs to exceed the replaced player's score by:

    4/1 = 4 points per gw.

That's why I strongly object to taking hits right now. It's much much less likely to pay off.

Jack Frost, who is 20 somethingth in the world (and therefore always correct ;)) , supported me on this, saying by his reckoning an average hit has about a 12% chance of paying off over 1 gameweek.

I will be preaching this all day!!

Why? You can't prove it wrong!

You can only say that something happened which I rate as a 12% chance!

I agree players take point hits too frequently...but this gw seems to be different...if you can't afford one of the watchlist favorites, then you have to free up some cash somewhere else. I think it especially makes sense if one of the transfers is your gw captain.

Just persuaded myself to captain van persie:

Fulham's priority: No red/ yellow cards -> Europe + europa money

Arsenal's priority: Win and hope city drop points -> 3rd place + loads of money + longer holiday.

    Van Persie - Mr consistent
Arsenal - Best away team in the league

When fulham would arguably be happier with 0-5 + no yellow cards than 1-1 + 3 yellow cards, I think it's quite safe to back against them!

premier league website fair play table is till 35 games atm and fulham were 2nd and there is a gap between them and 5th place b'pool and worth noticing is that it is not all about cards...behaviour towards ref/officials matters as well so they can still get away with it 😉

Hmmm. So who is likely to score more this week -

    A) Lampard, Tevez, Ameobi
    B) Nzog, Tevez, Berbatov ( - 4)?

I've got Rooney, Hoilett and Lamps. Rooney won't play, Hoilett will maybe play 60 minutes and score 1 point. Lampard will probably play but it's a dead match and Everton are in decent form and strong at home. Maybe a handful of points at best from those 3.
With two free transfers and a 4 point hit though I could get a decent midfielder with something to play for and both Tevez and Berbatov. A couple of goals from each of those would mount up to a reasonable score and be worth the hit...so I guess you have to consider more than just the one player you bring in if you're taking a hit.

I still haven't decided what I'll do, though.

      Rooney out.

Drogba has a reasonable chance of playing so just keep him imo. Even in the worst case scenario where he gets one point, think of it as 5 points because you didn't lose 4 to sell him.

Would you be too unhappy 5 points for drogba? Maybe a bit, but it's not the end of the world.
