The curtain may have dropped on the 2010 season but Fantasy Managers will already be looking to next term and assessing likely targets. Our Scout Notes switch their sights then, focusing on the players and trends that will stir interest as we contemplate our summer break. What summer break?

Anderson
The midfielder continued his impressive form when played behind a lone striker; Anderson excelled in the role in the recent Champions League Semi Final against Schalke and yesterday saw him grab a goal (his first in the league all season) an assist and the three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for a 13 point haul, fully justifying his selection in the Scout Picks squad and Big Dunc’s “Spot the Differential” article. Can Anderson flourish and find a regular starting role in Alex Ferguson’s midfield? Paul Scholes is likely to be the key factor here – with Scholes facing retirement, Anderson looks the most likely to step into the breach, although a new midfield arrival in the summer is also a strong possibility. Anderson’s form and role in the United camp will need monitoring in the pre-season.

Joleon Lescott
The Man City centre-half has started to show the form that made him a Fantasy favourite a couple of seasons back at Everton, with his second goal in as many games in the 2-0 win at Bolton. In the absence of Kolo Toure, Lescott has been given the game time to establish an understanding with Vincent Kompany at the heart of City’s defence and his eye for goal combined with City’s clean sheet capability could make him a decent pick come next term – if he can retain his starting role of course.

Charlie Adam
Adam’s free-kick at Old Trafford saw him finish as second-top overall in FPL this season, an outstanding return for a player initially priced at just 5.0. With Blackpool now relegated, the race will be on for his signature in the close season. If Adam does pop up in the Premier League next term, whether he remains a crucial Fantasy buy will be much dependant on his set-piece and penalty-kick returns; will any new side allow him to take the same number of corners and free-kicks to the same extent he has at Blackpool?

Robin Van Persie
Another goal for Van Persie at Fulham yesterday means that since the turn of the year, he has scored 18 goals in 18 games for the Gunners, failing to find the net in just five of those matches. Add in four assists and 27 Bonus Points and that’s an average of 7.8 per game. The Dutchman has shown that, when injury-free, he’s a near-essential asset for Fantasy Managers and will surely be one of the pre-season favourites when the time comes to select those 2011-12 FPL squads.

Bolton’s Decline
The wheels have come off in spectacular fashion towards the end of the season for Owen Coyle’s side; yesterday’s home defeat by Man City makes it five consecutive losses and, combined with the 5-0 FA Cup Semi Final by Stoke, cast a shadow over their great start to the campaign. In the end, Bolton sit just seven points off the relegation places and Coyle will need to invest in the summer, with Johan Elmander off on a free transfer and Daniel Sturridge heading back to parent club Chelsea. Talking of Sturridge, he will start the season with a suspension following his red card for a high tackle against City.

David “Junior” Hoilett
The Canadian was a real handful for Wolves at Molineux and his goal was Hoilett’s fourth in his last seven games for Rovers. Never given a chance under Sam Allardyce, credit must go to Steve Kean for showing faith in the youngster. He looks a real prospect for next season and will surely be an integral part of Kean’s side in the 2011/12 campaign. If FPL keep his price low, Hoilett could be a real steal.

Bobby Zamora
Four goals and four assists in ten games (with many of them from the bench) since returning from a broken leg has illustrated Zamora’s worth to Fulham. Injured in gameweek 4 and not returning until gameweek 29, he nevertheless ended up as top-scoring forward for the Cottagers and an injury-free season next time round under Mark Hughes should see Zamora a more-than-decent relatively low-priced shout.

Jermaine Beckford
A stunning strike handed Everton the home win over a fading Chelsea force. Beckford’s season has been patchy at best but, despite being in and out of David Moyes’ lineup, he returned eight goals over the season with three assists to his name. With Everton short on Summer funds, Beckford could well claim a place in Everton’s attack next term, although a shift to a regular 4-4-2 from David Moyes may well be required for Beckford to offer Fantasy Managers any real security.

Stephane Sessegnon
Playing as a makeshift striker, Sessegnon delivered his third goal in five games in Sunderland’s 3-0 win at relegated West Ham. Classed as a midfielder, the lightening-heeled signing from Paris St-Germain is all set to be a key figure next term and his shifts up front won’t have gone unnoticed by shrewd Fantasy Managers. Steve Bruce will surely bolster his forward line in the summer but the Sessegnon option is something we will need to be aware of as Bruce predicts big things from his January acquisition…

“We have to be patient and give him time to settle and get used to things…He’ll be a big hit for us next year, I’m convinced of that.”

Somen Tchoyi
Three-nil down to their hosts and without talisman Peter Odemwngie, West Brom looked dead and buried at St James’ Park but a hat-trick from Tchoyi earned the Baggies a point as the winger picked up 20 FPL points for his performance. Roy Hodgson hinted there will be plenty more to come from the player next season:

“It has taken me a while to get to know him but he is obviously going to be a very important figure for us next year. The more I have seen of him in training, the more I have got to see him in games, I have started to realise that he has got a special talent”.

Steven Taylor
An arm injury to Mike Williamson has allowed Taylor a chance to establish himself in the heart of Alan Pardew’s defence and he’s grabbed it with both hands. The centre-half has scored in each of his three subsequent appearances for Newcastle and has put forward a strong claim for a starting place alongside Fabricio Colccini regardless of Williamson’s availability.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

That's exactly the kind of speculation they'd want to avoid.

Him waving at the fans wouldn't be great for transfer negotiations if he is leaving - they want to pretend they're trying to keep him

Anyway he was at the last home game

    Mixed bag of a list.

Steven Taylor & Stephane Sessegnon helped me to 3rd place and £1k in the Metro national league. 🙂

But the big mistake of transferring in Zamora for Drogba in Fulham's DGW, while leading the League, cost me the 1st prize of £15k. Even if I had just captained Dempsey instead of Zamora, as I had always intended to do but crazily changed my mind at the last minute, would have won the big prize. 🙁

So Zamora for me?....can't get over it yet! Mark Hughes also off the Christmas list.

Ouch. All went pear shape for me in that same gw as well. I was on here telling everyone to get Dempsey in for Nasri. Had him penciled in on my excell sheet all week.

Just to take a 4 point hit on Saturday morning and bring Zamora(c).

      That was the end.

everyone in an around you will have plenty of ifs and buts... Be happy with the #1k

      I remember when I won $5500 in a poker tourney i accidentally entered from a $30 satellite.

I should've been really happy but i was really annoyed because i was huge chipleader when i lost with AA v KK before tilting out in 5th place

Still think about the $30k I should've had!

scored - you say be happy with 1k, and also that you're still thinking about your 30k!

        Sums up my position.

Never led a competition before and I have learned. Needed to play a bit more conservatively and shadow others' expected moves, rather than gamble too far.

But one shift of that captain's armband 🙁

All based on the advice from a Fulham friend )ex-friend!) who assured me that Zamora would play both DGW games and Dempsey wouldn't.

Congratulations; but it could have been worse, I was in first place after GW36 and missed out completely (5th). A couple of dodgy late transfers didn't help plus the fact that I had six players doubtful/injured/out of favour for the last game. Not to mention the Man Utd DGW earlier in the season when I captained Nani and he didn't play at all.

Basically, the margins between success and failure are tiny. But once again, well done!

Aldershot (it's Andy is it?). I did wonder what team you had going into GW38 and what changes you had made for that last week. I noticed you dropped out of the places. Sorry for you - I was hoping that the other three of us could all beat that Craig bloke who had 4 teams in the top 10, but fair play to him.

            My team for yesterday was:

            Hart
            Cole, Ivanovic, Baines, Taylor, S
            Sessegnon, Lampard, Modric
            Tevez, RVP, Berbatov (c)

I took a -75pts hit on extra transfers, which didn't work but didn't really cost either.
Not what I wanted to do, but couldn't rely on Silva playing and Zabaleta was all but ruled out, and then played!

            Zabaleta to Taylor
            VDV to Modric
            Suarez to Berbatov
            Sturridge to Tevez

Left Silva, Yaya Toure, Huth and Sczeszny on the bench.

Interested to know what you did.

              Hi Paul,

Sorry for the delay in replying' I'm in the middle of cleaning the loft.

I took 25 point hit bringing in Berbatov & Dawson for Huth & Rooney. I gambled on Kolorov coming in for Zabaleta and chose Maxi Rodriguez over Malouda {who I chose in GW37 when he didn't play!]. I'm still trying to work out why I bought Maxi in during week 37 instead of the N'Zogbia transfer I'd planned all week, but by that time I was fire fighting as my team was dropping like flies.

              That left me with

Hart, Cahill, Baines, Kolorov, Dawson, Lampard, Sandro, Maxi Rodriguez, RVP, Davies, Berbatov (c)

with Forster, Kelly, Malouda, VDV on the bench.

Looking back, the Man C-Spurs DGW unbalanced my side trying to max out on DGW players. Still, there's always next year and I'm now older and wiser!

PS - Well done to Covport who won the Scout league and came second over all.

                Hi Andy,

Gosh, our teams were more different that I had expected.

I can only empathise. I had Dawson planned in on my spreadsheet but ended up getting Kaboul instead, thinking I would need funds for gameweek 38 for Rooney (of course, I didn't). Sticking with that one Dawson decision would also have won it.

I agree with the Man City-Spurs DGW imbalance. Also v.frustrating was that Modric (and Bale) were among my Spurs players, I then heard that Modric was injured for the Liverpool game, transferred him out, only for him to play and score 90 points (as did Dawson!). Aaagghh! So wasted another 25 points getting him back on Saturday as he was on pens. I had seven penalty takers on Saturday, but no-one was given one.

There was a lot of unreliable team news this season...lots of players 'out' or 'major doubts', only for their name to appear on the team sheet. But if you're in contention, can you run the risk? Apparently next year Metro are going to bring in automatic subs, like FPL.

You an Aldershot supporter? As a consequence of a totally disastrous season for us, we'll be renewing our rivalry with you after a long gap, this time under the leadership of Paolo Di Canio.

Yes, I'm looking forward to renewing acquantainces with Swindon - mind you last time I was at the County Ground we conceded 7.

Automatic subs would be a big improvement imho, got fed up trying to second guess selections/injuries over the last part of the season.

I am also never, never, never going to go anywhere near Kolorov ever again. I may well have won it if I had gone with Lescott or Zabeletta my other options.

Not sure about the automatic subs. It sort-of removes the need to do your homework and work out who is likely to play, as you should by default always get an eleven together. Seems to dumb it down a bit and make it all a bit casual. But this is the first season I've played FPL or Metro games, so I'll bow to better knowledge.

Give me a shout if you fancy a beer before the big Swindon v Aldershot game, whenever it is!

Hey KOL, been mad busy this morning! Anyway!

Screw that Gavin guy! 😀 To be fair though finishing second by 3 points is still a good achievement, shows I can go toe-to-toe with you guys here on FFS 🙂

Won my H2H league on the last day, great finish to the season! Congrats on your money, we're gonna make my league a cash league next year I think, makes it much more exciting/intense? You say you got money for winning the month also?

Alright mate. I'm getting pumped in work anol, guess it keeps me busy and off the PL site.

Yeah t is a good achievement mate, well doneand well done on the H2H, i might join one of them next year, if i can get on here much before the start of the season 🙁

Yeah our set up is pretty good for FF, we each pay £5 a month and the prize money is

      1st - £200
      2nd - £150
      3rd - £100
      4th - £50

The winner of each month gets £30 and second place in the month gets £5. It means even if you are 200 points off the lead come march you can still win a couple of months and get money.

Thanks, it was a nice achievement for me, hopefully I'll be a little more disciplined next year and have a nice rank to show off around here 🙂

Re FFS team of the year,

looking at the midfielder poll it's clear there are three runaway leaders..the others aren't even close.

Perhaps FFS should consider a 4-3-3 formation instead for the team of the year....I'm sure they'll be at least three good strikers and from what I recall at least four sound defender choices.

I know Mark favours 4-4-2 in the scout picks but is the fourth best midfielder really a worthy candidate?

Its like that old Bill Hicks gag about people telling him that Iraq have the 4th largest army in the world, "yer, but after the first three there's a mighty big drop off."

        the campaign starts here.

...should be 4-3-3 especially as it reflects that very few midfielders have been must haves this season, whereas I'd argue many strikers have been..also many defenders have excelled. The likes of hangland and huth have been the real stars for me this season.

RVP for example has been frightening while fit.
Odem has been bargain of the year
CArroll in the first half of the season was incredible
Tevez as well...apart from the final week.

      This is a good point.

Perhaps in the same way that memberships were done this year, FFS could set up some kind of league with a buy-in.

OR there could be multiple leagues with a buy-in and a limit on how many players can enter.

I don't know, ignore my embryonic ramblings.

There's a real "yearbook" feel to the website this morning isn't there? I may as well join in.

    - Finished a jaw dropping 14th in the world courtesy of this site & its colourful sometimes wise/sometimes deluded patrons topped off with my fair share of good fortune.
    - Scraped into the FFS league's top 5 which I am sure Granville was pleased to see.
    - I became Northern Ireland's number 1 FPL manager.
    - Topped my mini-leagues at a canter.

Hurrah! I can't wait to be plotting again in a few months time but I'll still be roaming the site for the next few weeks though as I have nothing better to do in work.

Do you think Reeson believed the hype and expected to win again this year?

This game's too much fun to give up in a hissy fit. If his expectations are reasonable, I'd be surprised if the guy who won it didn't carry on (though I imagine they'll also be a slightly hollow feeling after winning the whole thing the year before).

Just like to say a big thanks to this site and its posters. You've helped me win my mini-league for the first time in four seasons, and to overcome the person who has won it the previous three.

See you again in a few months! 😀

For what it's worth I think Marco Van Basten being high on the lists of next Chelsea manager is a potential disaster. He could do some serious damage to that club.

In all seriousness though, i have no idea who they will bring in who is better than Carlo. Hiddink? He's hardly been at the forefront of world football. Porto guy? Yeah ok maybe, but he's still untested outside of Portugal.

Villas Boas knows the club, and the Premier League, well though. I know he's incredibly young, but he'd be my first choice. Although word is that he'll stay at Porto for at least another season.

He was a disaster at Ajax. He tried to switch them from the traditional 4-3-3, enough said - no one can do that.

Well, it depends really. His first job was the Ajax youth team, where he did fairly well. One can question how hard it is to do well with the best youth squad in the country though. He also did really well with the national team, but again, the collection of players he had was amazing and the way we went down to Russia in the QF of the euro cup, well, not a good memory.

After that he went to Ajax as head coach, where he almost ruined the club financially by overpaying for players. A lot of the players here were/are not the finished product yet really and it's been speculated that they were not at his level of thinking and playing, so he had a hard time understanding them and they had a hard time understanding him. If that was the only problem while he underperformed, he could be fine at Chelsea, but there's no real indication that's been the case. After he quit he hasn't had a job in football. I think he should get some more experience before becoming manager at a big club.

          Interesting stuff, cheers for that.

What about the possibility of him working under the guidance of Hiddink? Do you reckon that could work?

And Pompeyfan, what system did MVB try to get Ajax playing? All recent attempts at Chelsea to play anything other than 4-3-3 have failed quite badly.

Well, for starters you'd be assuming Hiddink would actually come to Chelsea. Right now he has a job in Turkey, not only to manage the national team, but also to bring structure to the entirety of turkish football. Ajax, in particular Cruijff, approached him to have some sort of function and PSV did so as well. It looks like he'll just be some sort of unofficial advisor though.

I read he's been advising Chelsea ever since he left, mainly to help with freshening up the squad. Apparently he brought forward five people to buy, one of which bbeing Neymar allegedly. If he gets Arnesen's old position I suppose he'd prevent MVB from messing up in the buying and selling categories, so that would help. There's still tactics and motivating players though, which can be seen as MVB's weaknesses IMO.

If I remember correctly van Basten chopped and changed between several different formations, 4-4-2 & 4-2-3-1 being just 2 of them I think. 4-3-3 is so ingrained with the club that it is sacrilege to play any other formation.

I agree with Crusher, I can't see Hiddink being able to go to Chelsea.

Ordered my season ticket for next season today - can't wait already!

well 3-4-3 is their true formation but in this day and age 4-3-3 is modern equivalent.

Turkey isn't doing that well in the qualifying I think, so if they fail, he could just do the "honourable" thing and quit, but that would be after next season has started.

And yeah, that was the problem with Van BAsten, he didn't really know what he was doing, so he kept on trying different things.

Question: when does the game for next season get released with prices etc?

Long Story: I had an interesting last GW...Already had my money minileague sewn up weeks ago (150 odd points ahead, ranked comfortably inside the top 500 overall) but I'd only won 1 manager of the month prize so I was determined to give it a real go for May. However, going into the last GW I was in 2nd place for May 15 points behind a manger who took a load of hits pre-May to go specifically for the MOM prize. I needed to gamble a bit but without damaging my overall ranking or taking too many hits, so I did:
    VDV > Sessegnon
Odem > Berb (and captained him)
    (4 pt hit)
All the advice on here pointed towards Modric or NZog but I just had a feeling on Sessegnon and had to go with my instinct in the end
Then after the dealine, there was a twist...inexplicably he'd done 9 transfers (7x4 = 28 point hit) - I can only assume he thought that hits do not affect the monthly table?

Anyway, suddenly I am 9 points ahead before a ball is kicked (28-4-15)! As the matches unfolded it was looking pretty good for me, especially when Sessegnon scored and then got an assist! But then towards the end, Stoke lost me my Begovic clean sheet and Sessegnon lost his assist. To make things worse as Stoke lost their clean sheet, his captain, NZog was credited with the assist. Now I was behind him by a few points and relying on favourable bonus points. That didn't transpire...but suddenly FFS was buzzing with the question "who got Wigan's assist? Was it NZog? Figueroa? Diame even?". I sat transfixed to Match of the Day and it was confirmed - Figueroa! Minutes later and NZog's assit was erased and I had won my manager of the month prize by ONE POINT. I celebrated silently.

Right. But Vidic got 187 points in 2008/09 and was then priced at 8.0m in 10/11. Would still be a reasonable price if Everton can sort out their leaky defence and he keeps his free kick and penalty duties.

I guess I'm the complete opposite. I care more about overall rank than winning my mini-league.

If you gave the me choice of either:

Winning my mini-league twice in a row, and coming 4k then 3k.

          Or:

Coming 45th, then 15k, and only winning my mini-league once.

          I'd definitely choose the latter!

Say if I was at 1k and had already won my mini leagues with a few weeks left. I wouldn't then be playing to stay in the top 1k, being cautious with my transfers. I'd probably start taking point hits and just having a bit of fun with it all.

Winning my leagues are what I play for. I don't care how I rank up against others worldwide who I don't even know. I care about being able to brag to my mates.

Mini Leagues for me. I'll get more involved with the leagues on here next season and maybe my opinion will change!

PS 180points in hits this season 8)

Im just a slightly better version of you.

It's not just that though, you're also saying that you actively don't want to win it, because you're worried about what your mates would think. That's absolute lunacy IMO! My mates would think it was heroic if I won the whole bloody thing!

                +10000000000

Last season I finished 119k, was my first season and I finished 2nd in my mini league. The winner of it finished 70k I think.

This season my rank has been much better (20-30k) but I've been trailing someone who has been around 10k all season, so this season hasn't been anymore enjoyable for me.

Was nice winning it on the last week though. 🙂
