Having picked up 14 clean sheets in the previous campaign, Stoke’s defensive options were very much on Fantasy managers radars as pre-season squads were tentatively selected. With so much uncertainty over the goalkeeper situation, however, thoughts turned to the back four and it was Ryan Shawcross who was at the forefront of most people’s plans, given that the centre-half had also bagged 21 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points in 2009/10.

With Tony Pulis’ side reliant on set-play delivery and well-practiced routines, Stoke’s muscular back four were always going to generate supplementary points to compliment defensive returns. However, not only did Robert Huth overshadow his centre-back partner for Bonus Points, the German exceeded all expectations by coming to prominence as Stoke’s major goal threat from set-pieces and even played his part from direct free-kicks. Ryan Shawcross was a forgotten man with Huth quickly installing himself as the prime target for Fantasy managers.

Defensively, Stoke had a slow start to the season and with just one clean sheet in the first 12 gameweeks, were looking poor value for money. Robert Huth, however, had already weighed in with a couple of goals by that point, a hint of what was to come. In a season where clean sheets were down, on average, from the previous few campaigns, attack-minded defenders proved vital and Huth ended up with six league goals (scoring four at home and two away) – the joint-top goal haul for defenders.

The Statistics
Huth started the season priced at 5.0 and even dropped to 4.9 but a run of one goal and two clean sheets between gameweek 12-14 saw his stock rise accordingly. While Shawcross offered little returns, Huth continued to impress and a huge swing in ownership saw Huth finish the season in 19% of FPL teams, compared to Shawcross’ 8%.

Stoke’s clean sheets dropped considerably, picking up just the 8 this time round, with five at home and three on the road but Huth’s goals helped him to 138 pts, just pipping ex-Chelsea team mate John Terry as the sixth best defender in the entire game.

Gameweek 26 was the highlight of the season for Huth’s owners. The towering defender capitalised on Sunderland’s inability to cope with Stoke’s set-piece threat to earn two goals and an assist. Three Bonus Points duly followed as Huth returned an incredible 19 points.

The Prospects
If this season is anything to go by, defenders with attacking potential will remain very popular targets. Huth’s goal scoring antics will surely see a price hike for the German, and he will be expected to come in around the 5.5 mark when the new player list is published – a similar pricing to Fulham’s Brede Hangeland’s this season.

Whether Huth can replicate his goalscoring antics is another matter; prior to this season he’d only scored five league goals in his entire career. Much will depend on how Pulis shapes his side over the summer – a radical change of style looks unlikely which should mean that set-plays will continue to play a major part in Stoke’s prosperity – a factor that can only aid Huth’s Fantasy potential.

Thanks -- although I'm unconvinced as to their actual usefulness ... it could just mean you had more prospects for the (c) than me.

Perhaps I just had Nani and 10 other shite players - doesn't exactly make me McGurn.

I just like the metaphorical male-member-display-for-hierarchical-purposes it allows for. 😛

Well, I've made a list of Sony Discmans (Discmen?) that have the same laser assembly (for another common issue) and I have one on the way which I'll take apart. I've heard that the unit in question is actually a modification of an early discman. However, I wouldn't hold out my luck that the drives would have the same part, and in decent condition.

It would be fairly simple to get even a degraded part, sand mould and correct any imperfections, and then mould a bunch of them, I just have to work out the material to use.

Plus, that way I can give something back to the comunity and save a bunch of cool stuff from being junked.

Bear in mind though there is a good chance that Zheng He of China probably 'discovered' Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania in the early 15th Century.

I'd even argue that large price tags bring with them a feeling of general entitlement and 'ownership' of a starting position ... thus making production from those players more difficult to ensure from a manager's perspective.

Quality players, "on the cheap," would seem to be the best way to go. Trick is, of course, finding quality players on the cheap. :S

Sneijder is about to be 27, and wouldn't suit our midfield. He'd be playing instead of Rooney ( 8) ) So i'm not fussed about this. With Fergies non secret man love of Modric, and spurs missing out on a CL place, i bet he sticks in a £30m bid for the little croatian. £60 for Modric and Bale? Scholes and Giggs replacement in a oner.

Neymar would be great, but he'd need about 4 stone of extra muscle to deal with the premier league bruisers. Also think in this 4411 formation our wingers need to be able to defend too. It's why Park and Valencia are starting and Nani has been slightly left out in recent weeks. Bale would be a good foil to Valencia imo.

Early thoughts as to structure for my team next year(!)

2x cheap rotating GKs (£5m max each)
Baines (£10m?) + 4x cheap rotating Defs (£5m max each)
    Taraabt (£10m?) + 1 cheap squad fiiler Mid + 3 x mid priced mids
    RVP + Rooney (£25m combined? + cheapish striker (£6m)

Any savings I can make on the named players or on the GKs / Defs below £5m each can be used for the 3 midfielders and the cheap striker.

    Any good?

Anyone else sad enough to have though this through?

IMO, that's crazy pie covered in delusional sauce. 🙂

Can't believe the Taarabt bandwagon has already started ... everyone realizes he'll be changing divisions, yeah?

I'd argue inalize is likely correct.

Adam was £5m. I think Taraabt will be more because QPR will be seen as a better side than Blackpool were. Not £10m obviously but more than £5m

        That's why I said

"Any savings I can make on the named players...can be used for the 3 midfielders and the cheap striker."

£10m is a conservatively high price for budgeting purposes, same with Baines (plus it is a nice round number!)

He was 5.5. Dorrans as well. Adam 5.0. Nolan was the most valuable player in the league according to OPTA in the year they came up, so it's unlikely Taarbat will be any more expensive.

Baines will be about £8m and probably overpriced. Surely Everton will sign a decent striker this summer who will want to be on pens. If Arteta stays fit all season this also reduces his set-piece threat. I think there will be better choices come the start of the season.

Yeah, the Baines bit depends on him still being on pens, otherwise will not be worth it.

So far, it looks like Everton's definintion of a "decent striker" seems to be DJ Campbell however, so I should be OK

Where to do you think? Can't see him going to Liverpool (who'll probably end up with Enrique), Villa would be a sidestep or step backwards, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd won't go for him.

Arsenal or abroad. I should state that i have absolutely NO basis for thinking this at all, it's just a hunch.

Why wouldn't Arsenal be interested? It's taken a while but i think we've established that Gael Clichy is nothing special.

They've got Gibbs too. I agree though Clichy is a shitter, but judging by Wengers past form I can't see him buying a LB for decent cash when he has a young French and a young English one already there.

Baines is a great prospect, both FPL and RL, but I'd think 7.5 to 8.5, max.

All I know is I'm going to triple on a top defence, and double on a reasonable defence that rotates well (Liverpool / Stoke, Chelsea / Fulham). Some of the mids I want should be cheap enough (Ben Arfa, Taarabt, Pennant, Sessegnon). I'll get a top striker too (RVP probably)

Played up front for Sunderland for a few games at the end of the season because all their strikers were injured. Ended up scoring a couple and an assist I think. Has since been touted by Steve Bruce as destined for big things next season

Better to go with some top defenders instead of GK's I think.

They don't get any save points, with a cheap GK you get decent points even if he don't get a CS.

          Alright, you want constructive.

Hernandez will be priced around the 9 mark. That's a lot to pay for someone who only scores goals. He doesn't look like a striker who will assist a lot. He doesn't take set pieces or pens. And he will not be a certain starter every game, unlike a Rooney.

RVP has scored big this season when Fabregas hasn't played.

I hardly think the Utd back four will be shaky.

So many thing wrong with all that I can't be bothered. I will just highlight this gem:-

"Hernandez will be priced around the 9 mark. That’s a lot to pay for someone who only scores goals"

You can't buy stupidity like that.

I'm saying you can't assist and score at the same time. He will be United's top scorer in 11/12 as HE is the striker- not Roo. Look at his haul since he won the spot over Berba.

"I’m saying you can’t assist and score at the same time." What are you talking about!? Even if he will be Utd's top scorer, it doesn't mean he'll be their top FPL point scorer. Look at Bent at Villa for example, Downing and Young have scored more points because they score, assist, and get BP's. Understand my point now?

Ben't situation this year isn't a fair example. I understad what you're saying but what I mean is that I don't care if Xav is going to get less assists than Roo and nani- he will get most of the goals.

8-9 mil for United's main goalscorer (even if he only plays 4 games in 5) is Jurassic park. I have no qualms about him being on the bench once a month.

All things remaining equal, Hernandez will score less points than either Rooney or Nani (though he's a middie and therefore not really a consideration for a forward) will next season.

Hernandez isn't 'worth' his price this year, as his starts are so infrequent and unpredictable. There's no sign that this will change - though, of course, it *might* - so a more expensive Chica is only less of a prospect ... no?

AP: After his busy summer and the 4 weeks of compulsory time off?

If he goes to the finals of the Gold Cup, he'll finish by June 25. If he plays in the Copa America, might not be done until July 24th. That means, potentially, that he would need to be rested as late as August 24th.

Seems likely he'll start 'slow', no?

There is talk, for full disclosure/buggu-immunity, that Hernandez may play a small role at the Copa as pressure from United seeks to protect the player.

I love the little fella ... but in FPL terms, I'd need to see more consistent starts and how his fitness is at the start of the season after his busy summer before considering him for my FPL squad.

Although, as mentioned before, funny how Hernandez will play in two different competitions this summer but Wilshere will be irreparably ruined if he plays for the U-21s ... not that I have a dog in that hunt, mind.

Now, the obvious response to my implied argument is that he'll have a starring role next year, as opposed to a deep-bench role that he had before.

But he'll also be playing for a promoted club ... I wouldn't assume that every year there will be a Charlie 'BAP-King' Adam.

Of course it's always good to find/predict the principal players on these promoted squads as they offer good value for cost ... but this burgeoning Taarabt bandwagon is very Boselli-like.

1st on your squad list for week 1? OK then.

I agree. Taarabt is well worth a gamble. He appears to be QPR's best player, is captain and on penalties..also he's a goal scoring midfielder as soop says proven in his team.

My only worry is his temperament...i've heard he is prone to wobblers if things aren't going his way. Also he is used to being the best player on the pitch. When they play Man UTd etc I'm not sure how well he will cope with being the 12th best player on the pitch.

As I said tho' worth a gamble. Boselli was as well...only thing is i should have got rid of him within 2wks not the 6 it eventually took.

Taarabt (if priced under 6m) has two games to prove himself for me.

He certainly has a bit of the Balotelli's about him and was hauled off early a few times this season because of it. I can see a few more strops in the prem when not getting the ball every minute or being lumped in the air by Karl Henry every time he touches the ball.

Just watched the Panorama programme on FIFA corruption. Makes the blood boil that we got so humiliated by those cheating bastards for the World Cup bid.
Apparently FIFA have until Dec 31st to comply with Swiss laws regarding disclosure and transparency or they'll be kicked out of Switzerland. Hope it happens, and if they carry on like this I hope we pull out of FIFA. It only takes one or two strong countries to do so and the whole rotten lot of them will collapse.

Yeah it was better than the last few he's done. But like i said no idea why Louis Theroux is presenting them. I suppose they gotta find SOMETHING for him to do but they all pale into insignificance compared to the Weird Weekends and the other series he did (can't remember what it was titled)

True. Though his genial, sort of harmless good natured nerdishness worked well in the prison. They didn't see him as any sort of threat so they viewed him the same way they would view the little geeky guy that got chucked in there. I do agree though, he is more suited to the weird stuff. 🙂

Feck knows to be honest. Basically Mike Ashley wants Newcastle to become an academy for the big four or five Premiership teams. We get young players cheap and sell them on for big profits, all the better if they are English as they will go for even more cash.
Now that system isn't ludicrous by any means, and indeed could be a way that a club without the resources of Man City, United, Chelsea etc could work. However to do that and still have a side that competes strongly, you need experienced players who are leaders. Barton is clearly an immensely important player for us, more so than club captain Kevin Nolan in terms of on the pitch ability anyway. Letting him go for cheap is daft.
He probably wants his wage to match the top earners at the club, which I think is Coloccini at around £80k, not definite on that though. Barton is 28 and on around £60k so the board don't see him as worth the extra £20k. Personally I would get rid of Alan Smith (£60k) and one or two of the other dead wood players and give him £70k and another two years.

Yeah daft money. Coloccini cost us £10m and £80k a week, and its only really been the last two seasons he's looked a good player.
Alan Smith has been a disaster, he was ok in the Championship but he isn't cut out for the Premiership anymore. To be fair injuries have taken their toll, but I'd love to see him move on from Newcastle.

I hate British manager's arrogence in thinking that players should play in their confederation competitions. They choose to sign them knowing that they are likely to play in these tournaments. The Copa America & African Cup of Nations are just as important as the European Championships.

Thinking about initial strategies for next season already.

Here's probably what I'm going to do. Using examples from this season.

2 cheap rotating goalies (Robinson, Harper, Mignolet, Begovic)

1 expensive defender (Baines, Kompany, Vidic, Alex)
1 mid-price goal threat defender (Huth, Hangeland, Samba)
2 playing defenders for mid table teams with nice alternating fixtures, probably a cut price Liverpool full back and/or OoP prospects (Flanagan, Kelly, Coleman, Bardsley, Enrique, Walker)
1 playing cheap as chips 3rd sub defender (Evatt, Jara, Simpson)

2 midfield lynchpins (Gerrard, VDV, Lampard, Fabregas, Nani, Silva)
1 mid price "differential," probably will choose according to fixtures (Dempsey, Nasri, Bale, Walcott, Downing)
2 value mids, one probably very cheap (N'Zogbia, Adam, Barton, Albrighton)

2 big strikers (RVP, Tevez, Suarez, Rooney, Drogba)
1 punty mid priced striker (Jones, Carroll, Hernandez if less than 9.0)

That will definitely be possible budget wise, and it's strong for rotation. Hopefully, I'll have enough funds to get a massive attack. It's going to be hard to choose between RVP, Tevez, Rooney, Suarez and Drogba/Torres. Will have to see pre-season form, fixtures etc.

    Bring on the new season!

For instance, this season I started with Fabregas + Drogba, and my other six attackers were: Arteta, Malouda, Petrov, Dorrans, Boselli and Fletcher. So 2 expensive players, 2 mid-priced players and 4 budget ones.

Good luck getting Lampard, Fabregas, Nasri, RVP, Tevez all into your starting fifteen.

Arteta and Malouda are considered high end. That's 8.5 and 9.5 for each.

There is no way in a million years you will be able to afford that team Camzy, maybe if you have 5 cheap defenders, big maybe still though imo.

          Yeah you can't.

But I got Arteta, Arshavin, Valencia, Drogba and Tevez into my starting XI last year.

Obviously Arshavin and Valencia turned out to be poor choices, but if I got VdV, Gerrard, Yaya Toure or something like that instead of my midfield 3, I'd still be looking at having a starting 15 containing:

          RVP, Tevez, Gerrard and VdV.

You can if the lynchpins aren't both Lampard and Fabregas level expensive.

VdV at 8.5 and Gerrard at 11.0 is doable. Obviously, you'd need to compromise here and there, maybe lower on the goalscoring defenders, but 4 "captaincy" choice players is possible for sure.

I'm surprised how many people are consideinh Stevie G, as much as I hope he does do well and I've always had him in the past I think he's a different player now. He will continue playing deep with Meireles in the more advanced role that he used to play. I intend to have Suarez plus a Liverpool GK or defender and that will do me.

Fair points. I'll probably go for someone much safer.

Maybe Lampard when his price drops down to a much more reasonable 11.5 or 12m.

I think I probably overestimated a big in terms of budget.

In all probability, we'll get 3 choices for big players.

At the moment, 3 of: RVP, Suarez, Hernandez, Tevez, Lampard looks really solid to start the season. Expensive midfield options aren't looking as good to be honest.

Gerrard is iffy, Fabregas mightn't even be here/isn't as dominant as he used to be, VdV is too injury prone, Nani/Valencia are a mixed bag.

      Similar to my post above...

      Any good?

I got slaughtered for saying this a couple of months ago. I thought The Hangover was terrible, with the tiger being easily the least funny part.

Perhaps I wasn't in the right mood, because I do really like Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, but The Hangover did absolutely nothing for me. Fell asleep less than an hour through.

I couldn't stay awake during it either. And it also rips off Simpsons episodes (marrying strippers and forgetting it happened).

I wouldn't say terrible but definitely overrated. Some bits had me cracking up, mainly Alan.

I only watched it quite recently, having listen to people hype it for about year.. Don't think the hype helped. I expected to be crying with laughter, but barely even smiled once.
