Over Sir Alex Ferguson’s 24-year reign, Nemanja Vidic has arguably been his most shrewd and vital capture. Costing £7 million, Vidic has just secured his second Barclay’s Player of the Year award, featured in his fourth PFA Team of The Year and captained United to the Premier League title.

Every Fantasy Manager will be more than aware of what Vidic offers, with a hefty price tag to match his prominence in the United lineup, each season Fantasy managers are faced with weighing up the advantages of acquiring such an expensive defensive asset.

This season, such investment largely paid off. Despite United lacking the solidity of previous seasons, Vidic still managed to fetch returns that saw him soar in popularity and provide a firm foundation for his Fantasy owners.

The Statistics

At the start of the season Fantasy Managers could pick up Vidic for 7.0, a drop from his starting value of 8.0 in 2009/10. However, rising popularity saw his value climb to 8.1 by the end of the campaign – peaking at 8.2 in February and March.

Despite maintaining a strong backing from Fantasy managers, there’s no denying that the United defence had some shaky spells throughout. With Vidic present in the side, United kept 13 clean-sheets and 15 overall – a decent return, but hardly comparable to the heady heights of 2008/09’s 14 consecutive shutouts. Indeed, it wasn’t until gameweeks 17 and 18 that United put together back-to-back clean sheets.

There was also little improvement when it came to Bonus Points. Having gathered 17 Bonus in the 2008/09 season, Vidic’s return dropped to just 7 last season and this level was maintained with just 9 coming his way this term.

Clearly Vidic has somehow struggled to earn recognition amongst United’s wealth of attacking talent. Fortunately however, the United skipper increased his goal threat at set-pieces which helped him earn another very respectable points haul.

Vidic enjoyed his most prolific form in front of goal in United colours, finding the back of the net on 5 occasions in the league. He therefore ended 2010/11 with 148 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points which saw him sit comfortably in fourth overall in the defender rankings. Significantly, Vidic earned 35 more points than team-mate Patrice Evra who started the season priced at 0.5 more than his skipper.

The Prospects

With those statistics in mind, we should perhaps expect a price rise next season. A value of around 7.5 would seem likely.

Fantasy managers will be anticipating United’s clean sheet count to improve slightly, which should balance things out if Vidic fails to match this season’s goal tally. Alternative options in the United defence could count against the Serb however. Rio Ferdinand’s fitness will again be called into question and could open the way for Chris Smalling to earn more consistent starts in the back four. The right-back situation is another that will offer Fantasy managers potential – if either Fabio or Rafael cement a start in this position, they are surely set to offer strong short-term value.

The flipside is that, Evra aside, Vidic will undoubtedly be the consistent starter and performer in the United rearguard – he remains “untouchable” as those around him come and go. The question will be however, whether his assured presence in our defences justifies a weighty Fantasy fee.

21.00 for Utd to come from behind and win (in 90 mins) on PP. I reckon that's worth a squid considering Utd never throw in the towel.

So Barcelona have accepted a shirt sponsorship deal from a Qatar company (£25m).

Unicef will go on the back of the shirt still and their fans are complaining? Even they have to learn you can't consume more than you produce and if they get 7000 signatures, the deal is off !

Statist-environmentalist hippy trash. Financial fair play will ruin them. HA.

Barca are a club owned by their fans, they have a right to be aggrieved. This is the first sponsorship their shirts have had for commercial reasons, so its the end of a proud tradition.

Guys, if anyone is making the bets outlined in the spreadsheet, please please please please make sure that the odds outlined are consistent with the ones on the Paddy Power website. Because if not the maths obviously becomes completely invalid, and you could end up losing money.

I've just updated it now. The odds on 3-1 United, and 2-1 United, had both shortened a little.

Cheers for the spreadsheet, much appreciated.

I went for it earlier, and although the odds were slightly different, I just adjusted the bets slightly accordingly. I mean, as long as each bet will net you around £45 profit, and your total stake doesn't go over £100, you're not going to lose money are you?

My maths is terrible, but that makes sense to me.

Haha, I have my reasons. I hate Utd cos of their glory supporters near me who think they are huge Utd fans yet don't make a game a season. I hate Liverpool because their fans think they are going to win the title every year, and they are just rubbish and I hate Barca cos they are a bunch of diving pricks! 😀

For the entertainment value? I think a 5-0 for either side would make for a poor final. I'd rather 3-3 and pens than that.

For the entertainment value of watching five goals, one great side being at their best, one great side being battered and the great aftermath that would make.

I know this is a bit childish but since both Barcelona and Man United win so much and so often I would kind of enjoy seeing them go through some proper pain 🙂

Apologies if I'm repeating but seen this on PP T&Cs:

The MBS we run are not intended to allow customers to guarantee a profit and we reserve the right to void all bets placed if we feel it is being used for this purpose.

I haven't seen Jamsiep's spreadsheet but does this ruin the plan?

It doesn't guarantee profit though. If United score 5 or more goals, you lose everything, and if Barcelona win, you win nothing.

Hopefully you are right but it would be so easy of them to void the bets, especially if there were a sustained pattern of betting.

        But good luck.

Thing is, it's *only* £40 anyway... Even if hundreds of people do something similar, the extra money raised through the publicity of it all should more than cover it.

I'm sure they're fully expecting people to do similar things, they must think it's worthwhile though.

              Sure thang.

              https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?hl=en_US&key=t8kYaLZC-sj9nGxwESIAAFA&hl=en_US#gid=0

Just checked now, and the odds in the spreadsheet are consistent with the ones on Paddy Power. Still worth making sure yourself if/when you make said bets, because if the odds change (and they have a couple of times already) then the maths becomes completely invalidated.

The caveat is Jamsiep's thing doesn't guarantee money, if Utd score 4 it would fail. Of course that's unlikely but hopefully for the guys doing this it would dissuade PP from clamping down on it.

If I had the cash to I'd be in.

        Thanks very much for this.

I signed up to Paddy Power just for this and stuck a bit extra on the 1-1 to get a larger free bet.

Can't decide whether I'm pushing my luck to stick the free bet on a Barca win?

Gutted, just been watching SSN and they had the first goalscorer odds on screen with Pedro @ 15/1

Surely too good to be true, and it was...

At Bet365 you get a free in-play bet if you bet on the final, so I have £50 to play with. First in-play losing bets get refunded as well.

Not bet in-play before so am looking at first goalscorers.

Villa you say, good shout - any of their front 3 you can argue for.

Don't you have to place a pre-match bet, then they'll match your first in-play bet with another one (worth the value of the pre-match bet) if it loses?

Just stuck £50 on Messi anytime @ 11/8.

No, you get the free in-play bet for placing a pre-match bet. I got the following email from them:

"Place a pre-match bet on the Champions League final and we will give you a free In-Play bet to the same stake on the big match.

Simply place a bet before kick-off, then once the game starts place another bet on any In-Play market. If your FIRST In-Play bet loses we will refund this stake, up to the value of your largest pre-match bet (up to £50)."

I also asked them if the free in-play bet is included in the refund offer and they said it was, trouble is the refund can take 2 hours to appear so if I went for Pedro @ 7.5 for example, if it lost I wouldn't get another free in-play on the CL final

Just re-read the article and this bit caught my attention
"Over Sir Alex Ferguson’s 24-year reign, Nemanja Vidic has arguably been his most shrewd and vital capture"

Personally I think signing Peter Schmeichel for £550,000 was the bargain of the century and far more shrewd and vital than Vidic. Cantona for £1m wasn't bad, nor was Keane for £3.5m. Vidic was a good signing though, no doubt about that.

In terms of value I think they're the same as the Keane we got for 3.5 wouldve been a bargain at 7m, same for Cantona had they been bought in 2006.
