Harry Redkanpp’s last gasp deadline day capture of Rafael van der Vaart was quickly lauded as the signing of the season. The Dutchman arrived at White Hart Lane with proven pedigree and took little time to start demonstrating his worth on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy Managers who stood by, pondering Van der Vaart’s likely impact and just how Redknapp would integrate his talents, were quickly convinced. Three goals in his opening four appearances announced Van der Vaart’s arrival and, with six Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points arriving over that early spell, it was clear that we had a key Fantasy prospect on our hands.

The Statistics

A modest 7.5 valuation in the FPL game indicated early potential. When Van der Vaart delivered, the scramble to acquire him began in earnest. The brace against Villa in the gameweek 7 home win sparked almost 200,000 “transfers in” and, by gameweek 15, a full 1.0 had been added to his value.

Van der Vaart was far from a “fire and forget” signing however. Concerns over his fitness and stamina, compounded by several periods of absence through injury, meant that the Dutchman’s Fantasy owners remained on their toes.

Despite his importance to Redknapp’s side, Van der Vaart’s longer spell of consecutive games was nine from gameweek 30 onwards. He was still subbed in four of those matches and, ironically, this was also Van der Vaart’s least profitable run of matches.

However, there’s little doubt that Van der Vaart produced the goods. His 13 goals and nine assists were rich returns for a first season in England, backed by a generous 19 Bonus Points from the Press Association representatives who quickly established him as a favourite.

Dominance at set-pieces and spot-kick taking duties boosted his potential hugely and our Members OPTA stats continually indicated that, in terms of goal threat, Van der vaart had few peers in the midfield bracket.

The Prospects

There were clear issues this season with Van der Vaart’s role in Redknapp’s starting XI. He flourished early on in tandem with Peter Crouch, playing just behind the lanky striker. However, with Jermain Defoe back in the picture and Roman Pavlyuchenko showing form that saw the Spurs boss hand him regular starts, Van der Vaart was pushed out to the right-flank. That’s a role that is far from assured given Aaron Lennon’s spritely form; Fantasy managers will approach Van der Vaart with a degree of caution next season as a result.

Van der Vaart will prove a conundrum. A price rise is inevitable given his impact this term and we can expect the FPL to deliver a value of around 9.5, possibly even 10.0. That would push him into the same bracket as the likes of Frank Lampard, Florent Malouda, Nani and Cesc Fabregas – suddenly casting major doubt over Van der Vaart’s place in our squads.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Scott Sinclair -- Have we just found our 5m striker for next season? On penalties and a hattrick at wembley

He's the best striker of all the 3 promoted teams, triggerlips.

I'd say he will be worth a punt on at £5m.

I could be wrong, but I have my reservations about Holt.

I'm not sure he's the kind of striker who will succeed at this level. I rate Simeon Jackson as a better bet to succeed in the Prem.

Until this season his goal scoring record has been rather poor.
However hes been banging them in this season.
Aged around 22 its possible his game might of come together.
He clearly has plenty of talent , enough for him to play for chelsea at a very young age.
If he costs 5m or less next season looks like a very good candidate for third striker imo

Talking of strange bandwagons, jamsiep, the next Chelsea reserve to appear on Hamburger SV's wanted list is - Michael Woods.

At this rate Arnesen will try to sign up Chelsea's corner-flags too.

If Mancienne passes tomorrow's medical, then yes. Initial price for the 4-year permanent deal might be closer to €2 million than the originally suggested €3.5 million. What appears to be happening is that Arnesen turned up in England with a wish list for loan deals, and Chelsea are trying to fob him off with expendable fringe players. Also mentioned: Ryan Bertrand and Fabio Ferreira!

In other news, HSV's Guy Demel is in talks with unnamed London clubs (none of which, apparently, include Arsenal).

What is infuriating is that the FA wont have the balls to pull out of the corrupt ramshackle shite.
I remember how pissed off I was at the time the cup bids were lost, how obvious it was that at least the Qatar bid was a bribery case (I certainly wouldnt be suprised if Russia greased the odd greasy palm too).
              It's sickening.

Well what would it mean to pull out?
                    No internationals - good
No Champions league - top clubs would lose a fortune
                    No Uefa league - meh

Not sure about if we'd have to pull out of continental club football, I think we would. Easy for me as a Newcastle fan to say pull out, but probably the majority of United, Chelsea etc fans wouldnt want to.

People seem to be forgetting that if JUST England pulled out then Blatter would be forced to reform. No England teams in the CL would be an unacceptable situation given the calibre of players it would deny the competition.

The bottom line is Blatter would be forced out before it actually came to English teams being forced out of the CL.

Evening all - it's great to have the Swans back in top flight after 28 years. What a nerve-racking day, particularly when Reading pulled 2 goals back. The Swans were more clinical when the defensive errors occurred.

Now I'll have to convince the missus that a season ticket is a worthwhile investment 😉 In all seriousness though, I am one of those fans who ought to be ashamed of himself - I will come out of the closet and attend the Liberty stadium more now that there is Premiership opposition there.

Well they made a tidy profit last year and did go and nab Scott Sinclair, who has grabbed vital goals consistently this season. Certainly no reason why they couldn't go out and grab one or two players pre-season, now that they have the Premiership tag.

Sinclair and Dyer out wide could do reasonably well even pitched in at a much higher level. Defensively, I'd be looking at a bit of investment there.

Hey JOMT. Funny I was just wondering whether Swansea will be this season's Blackpool. I doubt Scott Sinclair can be the new Charlie Adam though. Does he take all set pieces? Then, I sea Swans were second only to QPR when it comes to clean sheets. Can they defend better than Blackpool or today's game tells a story?

Funny how on the back of one game, where he didn't even play well and was up against the slowest pair of full backs in history, Scott Sinclair seems to be the must have forward/midfielder for next season. He won't be in my starting 15, that's for sure.

I really shouldn't get so annoyed at things like this.

Vintage you going against a player that everyone starts talking about.

He takes penalties for a team that know how to score and bagged 22 (?) goals this season. If he's classed as a midfielder then he's a perfectly viable option. Performances on the pitch don't always have an impact on FPL points, as a Chelsea/Football fan you should know all too well because of Frank Lampard.

Still, there's no guarantee that he'll take penalties when Swansea inevitably sign a decent forward to replace Borini.

The player I'd compare him with is Ebanks-Blake, although they don't play in the same position clearly. He's scored a fair few goals in the Championship despite being an average player, and won't be able to do it in the Premier League.

Come on Jamie, don't be stubborn. To switch your question, how many penalties you would have thought Blackpool would get this season if you were asked same time last summer?

Right, the answer is 7. Adam scored them all, plus 2 set pieces and only 3 other from open play. He wasn't such a bad fpl prospect Adam, was he? Never mind assists.

I am not saying it will definitely happen again, but a player who takes set pieces for a decent attacking team and comes at a budget price, worth a look in my opinion.

😀 I'm away all summer, so I have to formulate my opinions on players pretty damn quick!

Adam is a different case though. His style of playing lends itself to getting bonus points, whereas Sinclair's doesn't whatsoever. The bonus judges seem to value total touches/passes over anything else, something which won't work in Sinclair's favourite in the slightest.

Blackpool also scored more goals in the Championship than Swansea, and Brendan Rodgers isn't a maverick like Holloway who'll have Swansea scoring 2 goals every game...

If he's down as a midfield then I guess he won't be a bad choice, but I don't think he will be.

Happy to agree. Bonus points don't even come into the equation. And Adam has been a special case, which Sinclair doesn't need to match. If Siclair can get 5 penalties, 3 direct set pieces and 2 from open play, he's already an option. I think Graham Alexander had got more than 5 penalties playing for Burnley.

And of course, being classed as a midfielder (which I think he will). How many points other 5M mids will get? I'd doubt there will be many with more if this is the case.

It's also plain wrong. It blames Park for Dani Alves being a threat, citing his forward runs in the second half, when it was Giggs who was playing out on the left in the second half.

I've got accounts with PP, Bet365, Stan James and Totesport - the first three of which are pretty decent. Totesport is a bit of a waste of time, although they do often have some mad odds - like I once got Ronaldo to score 2+ goals at home to Getafe @ 9/4, whereas PP and the others were only offering 11/10. He scored a hattrick. 8)

It's good to have at least a couple of accounts, just because the odds can vary a fair bit from bookie to bookie.

    http://www.thesportreview.com/tsr/2011/05/five-of-the-worst-premier-league-signings-of-2010-11/

An article on the five worst signings of the season - to be fair I think Torres could be great again next season so I won't write that move off just yet, though fair enough he didn't pull up any trees so far.
Joe Cole was poor, but if Liverpool are smart they'll sell him for £3m-ish and make a profit.
Bridge was only on loan, and you could equally put Stephen Ireland in as a loan signing that didn't work out.
    Fair enough for 4 & 5 though 🙂

i can't do road running any more because the impact hurts my ankles so i use a cross trainer... it's on of these machines that looks like you're skiiing... it's basically a running motion

            you must know this!
